    The snails are called “den den mushi” or “transponder snails”. They are telepathic snails that can communicate from anywhere and any distance. Oda forgot to explain them in the main story so he had to explain what they are in a Q&A type thing. And the seagulls with newspapers are called “news coo”, they literally just deliver newspapers throughout the world.

      So I've never seen this explained by Oda or anyone but I came across something that I believe must be the inspiration. Some people actually believed snails made telepathic bonds and could communicate long distances via their mucus trails or something. Like 1800s something in France a guy actually tried to make a telephone system out of this. Oda works 21 hours a day and takes inspiration from so many real world historical events and mythologies he's an encyclopedia. Look up pasilalinic-sympathetic compass. That's the snail phone.

    Just to quench the false narrative, around episode 300 is when One Piece becomes the greatest story ever told, but you don't need to wait that long for the story to "take off". I'd say around episode 25 is when you really get a sense of what the anime is capable of. Still a lot of episodes to go through until you get there, but it's not 300.

    I am an anime watcher that started because of the Live Action. I’m on episode 388 and it’s the best show I’ve ever seen in my life. I have never been more attached to characters or a story, ever. I don’t know how to describe it!! But man, hearing that song in the background during the flashback with young Luffy and Shanks made me cry (anime watchers will understand). I hope you enjoy as much as I did!
    Edit: I also want to add that it did not take me 300 episodes to get into the show. I’d say I was really locked in around episode 85 where the Alabasta arc starts. Trying not to give too many details but there are other reasons as well. I highly recommend the anime

    So a couple clarifications
    -This IS the same production company as Bebop but a completely different creative team, Oda(the creator) had all final say/write off on any changes they made even down to the COSTUMING.
    -Gold Roger hid all his treasure in one piece(place) hence, The One Piece(and Oda said it’s something material not friendship etc)
    -The world of OP is eclectic, islands have different cultural backgrounds, technology level etc so expect a WIDE range of fashion and aesthetic and tech
    -The snails are called Dendenmushi which is a very layered pun and based on a French crackpot that thought mollusks are telepathic
    -Zoro’s actor Mackenyu is a highly trained stuntman in his own right, and son of the legendary Sonny Chiiba(yes like the Kill Bill one)
    Lastly, whoever told you it takes 300 episodes to get good was blowing smoke up your butt. The arc they were referencing is the point were it solidifies itself as “one of the greats” and is where most folks decide to buckle in for the whole 1000ep ride, but it is about where this Live Action season ends in the anime that it hits the ground running, although I agree Adam the early animation quality is *rough*.
    If you DO want to try again there are OVAs made more recently that retell the East Blue Saga with updated animation, and I’d highly recommend. Overall I have never once regretted my decision to watch nearly 1100 episodes of this series, it really is that good, and I hope Jay enjoys this adaptation!

    • @7thlittleleopard7
      @7thlittleleopard7 Před 6 měsíci +6

      I don't think the animation is rough at all in early OP. It's very dated, yes, but it's also very charming and part of the journey you embark on when you take the voyage of watching One Piece is watching animation conventions grow through the years. At the time that it was made, the animation used was very good, it's just that nowdays, with all the ability and skills built up over time, there's a large difference to back then and now, especially since we have access to better technology in the use of creating. It's still very good quality _for what it is and when it was made_ but you can't really compare it to anime nowdays because they're totally different creatures.
      It's honestly worth watching just to see how animation conventions changed over time. Well, it's worth watching for the story, of course, but seeing how 25+ years has changed the industry standards is also fun for anyone into media presentation and animation.

      Id say you are pretty close to all of this but saying "Oda had final say/write off". Oda had to be convinced by the writers of the live action for them to make it, basically saying "this is how you translate it into live action" which is why he had "final" say. The live action writers literally had multiple blueprints of One Piece to go off of and yet they still managed to mess it all up. Even Oda regrets letting them convince him to put Garp and Cody in that early. The reason it got a second season is cause the nostalgia was there and people couldn't see the all the mistakes they made after being announced that they are staying true to the characters and the story. I knew it would be possible for a second season cause of that but ZERO chance it will get a third.

    • @Phanthief95
      @Phanthief95 Před 6 měsíci +1

      I would also add for the “World of OP is eclectic” part that the world also has different races of people.
      There are humans, but there are also giants, dwarves, fishmen, mermaids, & even a race of humanoid animals. It’s a crazy world.

    • @dragoonfirestorm1171
      @dragoonfirestorm1171 Před 6 měsíci +4

      @twistedfireking1845 You may have to recheck your sources or may have misremembered it. Oda had refused to make into Live Action until he was confident in quality. You make it sound like he doesn't support it. The Coby/ Garp side story was one of the largest concessions Oda had to make which was also one of the bigger criticisms from fans, but the rationale behind it was the format of serial shows for Western audiences contain concurrent story plots. In order to do this they needed to flesh out the Coby/Garp story as it made the most sense to use and to introduce the world. I found this change and others like it to expand upon the lore to those who know the anime vs a direct 1 for 1 retelling so there was something new. but the show still captured the essence of the anime. I've personally introduced 3 people to the series through the live action who wouldn't have watched it otherwise, and they had a lot of fun and wish there was more. The part I disagree with you the most is your point on there only being a season 2 because of nostalgia. Season 1 was received tremendously well, its hailed as one of the best live action adaptations, and Netflix in their earnings call touted it as one of the biggest factors of subscriber growth for that quarter. It's getting lots of non-fans into the series and a lot.of people are enjoying it overall. Who.wouldn't want more?

    • @7thlittleleopard7
      @7thlittleleopard7 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@dragoonfirestorm1171 ^All of this.
      Also, Oda literally released a press statement that if you have any issues with the live action, to blame him and not the cast or the people making it. He stands by the product that was released 100%. Were there some things he would have liked to have changed a bit? Probably, in retrospect, but he fully endorsed the show and Netflix said they would not release the show unless he was happy with it. That we've got it means he was happy with it.
      AND I've seen SO MANY people who had never seen One Piece before or had no idea what it was, react to it and decide to watch the anime based on what they saw in the live action. So many people have come in to the fandom from it, and while they have loved the anime more than the live action, it still did the phenomenal job of bringing in people and hooking them.
      And a ton of fans - both old and new - are hyped for seeing more of the live action. You may not want it, but a shit ton of us do! We stan our new crew and the future crewmates to come. Even MORE people will be drawn in from the wave of season 2, 3 and however many more seasons we get.
      Personally I would love to see the full series in live action but I'll be happy if we reach the end of Enies Lobby or Saobody or, hell, Marineford.

    Little tidbit re: the neon lights at the bar, the group behind the live action actually stumped Oda by asking if the One Piece world had electricity during pre-production! He'd never thought of it before, and he finally decided 'sure, why not', lol.

      The target age range for the anime is even lower(3 to 12 years old) than for the manga, and it is hard to watch. One Piece is particularly known as a "朝アニメ/morning anime" and is broadcast during the hours that kindergarteners watch it. Oda and the publisher also criticize the Tohei-anime (character modeling, voices, skin color, consumption of devil fruit without permission, etc.).

    The story of Chouchou the dog early on showed me the anime was more than goofy pirates doing goofy things with goofy animation to match. Then Nami made me ugly cry, shocking me this goofy pirate show could do that. Then, in a new land, fists were raised into the air as a friend called across the waters and I literally cheered out loud for this that damn show. I ugly cried again at a flag burning, a woman screaming her hearts one desire, and war being declared. It was at that moment I believe I was watching the best show I've ever seen for sheer emotional payoff. From that point to this day, the story just gets better and better, the world growing forwards and backwards filling out an entire global society, and the stakes grow outward farther and farther. There's never been a story in any medium like it before and since.
    They took this singular show that stands on its own and lovingly recreated it near flawlessly in live action. Story points are different, characters changed slightly, and a whole lot of ground is cut to make a streamlined arc, but its One Piece. Undeniably so. The costumes are near 1:1 on every main character and characters we see on screen for a second, drawers that are never opened on screen are filled with lore building props, and they went hard on the things that should NEVER work that good in live action like the transponder snails. They built those sets. The actors grew up loving their characters. Its just a vibe we want to go back to all the time, that's what the allure of the show is, live action or anime or manga.
    I'm so glad you guys got to this!

    I think the advantage that anime live action adaptation have over other adaptations is that it is supposed to be wonky. Especially with One Piece, it is a weird and goofy anime but it is also very serious and deep. There are no flashy powers like in Dragon Ball so they can portray the characters as human but still have them as immensely strong like in the original. Once they get into power systems though, the show will have to make changes so it does not look like version 2 of the anime.
    The map turning into an actual place is one of my favourite parts. The mangaka uses mind maps, simplified maps of islands and diagrams to illustrate ideas. For example, when a character is planning a scheme, on the side there will be a diagram of who goes where and a map of the setting. During final battle, the readers would get a summary of what is going on through a narrator who briefly describes key events playing out at different times and different places.

    To remark on you comment of "there are over a thousand episodes ing this show". There is buuuut, i did a lil number crunching on how many chapters they went thru to get to the end of the show here. If i remember correctly it was something like 95 chapters a episode 😂😂😂 So if that stays the common factor of chapters per episode then we should be to Wano in no time 🤣🤣🤣

    • @cartoonishidealism582
      @cartoonishidealism582 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Roughly it seems like the show covers around 96 chapters per season I.e. roughly an average of 12 chapters per episode. If they extended certain seasons to like, 10 episodes they could maybe fit 120 chapters.
      Anyway I think with the pace things are going at, Wano should be season 10.

    • @josephparks7628
      @josephparks7628 Před 6 měsíci

      @cartoonishidealism582 chapters per season, that's what I meant lol. Thanks for the correction. But yeah, 10-12 seasons doesn't seem like a unbelievable timescale for where Wano will be.

    Awesome! This show got me into the anime. I enjoyed it better than the anime mostly due to the pacing, but the overall story of the anime is really good. The anime does have a really slow pace, but this tells the story really well, and hopefully will not have nearly as much rehashing old plots as the anime. Looking forward to how you react to the Luffy character of this show! His innocent positivity reminds me of many of your reactions!

    For a large part of my life I knew One Piece existed and I thought about watching it a few times but due to a nasty habit of looking at say thumbnails of a video and reading the description always deterred me from watching it. That and the third antagonist of the series is Buggy the Clown and a few other later characters like Gaimon, the Meowban brothers, Don krieg, always made me not want to watch because of their crazy designs. Funnily enough what got me into One Piece was after I got to the lowest point of my life where I just tried to off myself by injesting half a bottle of sleeping pills. I needed to find something to distract my depressed mind and One Piece did so much more than distract. It inspired me to pursue a career I would be happy with and it was the leading inspiration behind a novel project I am writing. It became so much more than a silly story to me. It quite literally changed my life and even when I am old and gray I will be telling my grandkids about this anime and its phenomenal story.

  • @joshuana5132
    @joshuana5132 Před 6 měsíci +1

    Yeah, for the anime, there are various points where the anime picks up. First point: Reverse Mountain leading into the Grand Line(Possibly Logue Town before it). Second point: Alabasta. Massive conflict. Third point: Water 7/Enies Lobby duo. Fourth point: Marineford Arc. Fifth Point: Punk Hazard/Dressrosa. Sixth Point: Wano.
    Each of those, the story just seems to improve in leaps and bounds compared to the prior episodes.

    • @reverse_aquamath
      @reverse_aquamath Před 6 měsíci

      Got more into detail. I might try to post at least one of these per episode based on the featured characters.
      Luffy: Feat - Devil Fruit:
      Gum-Gum:
      Bludgeoning Immunity, attacks gain the reach property. Reach can extend up to 15 feet, but you threaten
      only at 10 feet. Unarmed attacks can be treated as if made by a grappling hook for climbing purposes.
      Swim speed is reduced to zero and cannot increase by any means. Disadvantage on rolls to avoid drowning.

    Hi crew!! I think that this live action is not afraid of being an anime adaptation. Unlike Death Note or Cowboy Bebop, even Ghost in the Shell, they try to accomodatte the story or the narrative to eastern standards... One Piece doesn´t. It is an anime adaptation that is not afraid of being quirky or outlandish, that´s why is so fun and appealing (therefore, succesfull).

    YES! This is going to be awesome! I love this so much, and such a great reaction already! The adaptation simply nailed the feel of things, and while it did change things, it was either cases where it's clearly a practicality issue of trying to do this in Live Action, or it's changes that actually make the story stronger or work better. But it nailed the heart and the feel of the story.

    It’s apparently all of the worlds most valuable treasures, including; gold, diamonds, transcripts of forbidden knowledge, relics, and everything else that would be necessary to be the most powerful pirate on the seas… all gathered together in one place… it’s called the “one piece” because it’s everything a pirate could want, all together…

  • @eawhite782
    @eawhite782 Před 6 měsíci

    Yes! So excited for these reactions! And like others have said, the manga and anime don't take that long, episode 300 like you said, to get into it. Most people will have a good idea if they like it within the first few dozen chapters/episodes. And, the art style does change as the story progresses. Even the anime updates to reflect Oda's (the author) changing art style. I also wasn't a huge fan of the art in the beginning but now I love it! Been reading the manga for almost 25 years now.
