This system has been installed in Man city for the past 2 or 3 season. Pep has drilled his style of play so much that it's a bit too obvious but because his players are individually skillful it's very difficult to counter or press. His 4-3-3 system does the exact same thing. His 2 CM pushes forward in between the strikers and wingers and either or LB/RB push up high as well, Dias, Stones and Rodri sit high on the centreline waiting for the free ball and having Gundo or at times Bernardo becoming the "1".
What makes it different is the way Pep implements it, they have the Marcelo Bielsa touch to it. Having his wingers and CMs rotate and have that triangle passes and options available always. Thus why it's so frustrating watching them in possession all the time and being able to toy around with opposition defence as if it's like playing against a non-league team.
What Man Utd currently lack by playing this system is MOVEMENTS! Many a time I see most of them stand there static. Dalot or at times Rashford. But with time I can see that this system to will come to fruition. Trust in Ten Hag. đŸ™ŒđŸŒ

the 3-1-6 is situational. Typically, its used against teams that play a back 5 or a 4-4-2 low block like what Pep did against Burnley last season or Xavi against Inter Milan recently in the UCL. As you mentioned, it creates overloads against a static backline. Against Newcastle, we'll likely play a 2-3-5. It creates passing triangles all over the pitch, creates overloads and helps protect against a potential counterattack.

And if the chance creation was good, then we really need to improve the finishing BY A LOT, because for about 2 years this team won’t be going head to head against the top 4 in terms of pure quality. That means we have to be able to score from every small chance.

Tbf these sort of tactics and patterns to play are things all coaches have. You'll be surprised that Ole would have also had certain systems he would have liked his team to play to, although it often didn't look like it. I remember people doing these sorts of explaining videos when Ole went through his golden patch of unbeaten games and talked about the systems he used.
The difference will be if ETH can actually get the players to stick to his principles and systems and do it consistently. That is why city and Liverpool are so good and arsenal have started to be. It's not like arteta didn't have any systems or patterns over his previous years, it's just now he has the personal and the time for them to get it down.
So in order to judge this, we will have to see it develop over time rather than think wow, this player goes here, that player goes there as all managers do that, right down to conference level.

Ridiculously silly comment, like saying all coaches coach or all footballers play football even down to non league. The devil is in the details and only the top managers like ETH go over those miniscule points hence success.

    • @JK_360_
      @JK_360_ Pƙed rokem

@@BigTone999 I don't think you understand my comment. This video simply highlighted positional movement of players in attacking transitions to sort of wow people with this 3-1-6 system he mentioned. This is fine but not the most important thing.
What I'm saying is highlighting a few games where certain players move into certain positions is not anything groundbreaking. For example you could do this same video and see patterns of play in certain games with Ole when we played counter attacking football and arteta in games throughout previous seasons when they weren't very good. Even right down to Sunday League level, I've had managers that will have simple patterns of play explaining when we break I want you to make this run, you to drop here etc etc.
What will decide if ETH successful is if he can get these players to stick to his principles over an entire season, and that doesn't just mean this 3-1-6 system mentioned in this video, it means ETH getting the players to be able to be fluid and tactically aware during a game in how to deal with different situations , ETH has even said this himself. This is why I brought up City as they are the masters of this and arteta is getting arsenal to this point now. Before arsenal could look amazing in one game and then look totally clueless the next. It's about the personal and the whole team having the experience to be tactically aware in managing game situations, not just this player goes there and this player goes there during an attacking phase. That is why it will take time to see if the team is really understanding what he wants them to do.

One area of improvement, the fullbacks are struggling with the inverted role offensively. They still don't know what to do with the ball when in possession at the 8 position but are ok when wide. Ten Hag is a top coach. If he's given the a blank check and the keys of the club, we're headed for success.
Look at this season: we got rid of Lingaard and Pogba, we let go of old players like Mata and Matic, we only brought in class in Casemiro, Lisandro, Antony, Eriksen and Malacia.
Don't forget we benched the old fridge captain.
We got a manager who knows what he does and is experienced.
And we only lost the first 2 games of the Premier League when we didn't have Antony and Casemiro, and everything was new for the whole team. The new coach, new players, new system.
Then we lost to City which is just at such a high level, that we can't really complain about losing to them.
Apart from that, we won against Arsenal and Liverpool. And we are on the right path. We are nine points behind, with 30 games to play, one game in hand. And there's a World Cup and winter window till the end of the season.
    The future looks bright!

The easiest way to think of the Ten Hag formation is 4-3-3 that plays in the style of total football were forwards can play as wingers and attacking halves, midfielders can play as defenders and defenders can play in the midfield or as a winger.
It is why it can look like 3 players at the back, 5 central midfielders or 5 forwards. Bruno Fernandes will play as both a forward and a central midfield player under the system.

The tactics and style of football are fine as far as it goes. At the minimum a team needs to have a style of football where players know their roles. The bigger problem is we are missing players for the way he wants to play. Martial is arguably a better CF option than Ronaldo (current CR7, young Ronaldo could have adapted to anything) but he's injured so often. We need a fast and technically gifted CF who excels at fast interplay around the box.
The defence when Varane and Martinez are playing is solid. We could do with an RB backup. CM is where we still look weak. If you compare Bruno with say De Jong. De Jong can carry the ball forward better and can actually do some defensive duties as he's very clever at intercepting the ball before it gets to his teams last 3rd.
Bruno isn't quite up to that and some of his passing, how he advances the ball, is wayward. De Jong and VdB did the same job for Ajax that were trying to use Eriksen and Bruno for and they did it so much better. Casemiro and Bruno /Eriksen is a better combination but slower. Zidane Iqbal can be great with Casemiro but he's just a bit too young. I'm sure Erik will find the right combination.

This system looks a lot better than the predictable, reactive counter attacking we've been served up for the last 3-4 yrs, at least? Actually, better make that 9??? United still look very light in midfield, at least against City, and at times against Arsenal and Liverpool....Good insightful video, good understanding of tactics 👏

You are really describing Transition and Rotation. I played a 3223 in the 60s and 60s and 70s.
When an outside back...Shaw ie go's forward the the defense rotates and the weak side defensive midfielder becomes the wing back on the weak side. The other defensive midfielder is responsible for CONTAIN...stopping the outlet on transition and or slowing down the other team's attack.
The entire process BEGINS with transition if possession and rotates from side to side. If we attack down one side, and lose posession the counter attack SHOULD come out the other side hence the contain always shading to our weak side on attack.
As an aside, WHY team's allow a corner kick to go over EVERYONE with no player on the weak side charged with contain is absolutely beyond my comprehension.

Another positive to this situation is the fact that we win the ball high up the pitch, that's how we kept Spurs and Chelsea pinned in. For large parts of these games, Spurs and Chelsea couldn't get out of their own half

This is similar to how Arteta played last year, when Xhaka falls back into the defence to add numbers when the fullbacks bomb forwards. this year, Xhaka no longer falls back but joins the attack becoz we have a more specialized fullback who can play as fullback and midfield. so instead of the midfield falling back into the defence, it is the fullback that joins the midfield to keep the momentum of attack from midfield as a deep lying creative player, which is done brilliantly by zivchenko.

The extent of the attack system is blowing his mind lol. Ten hag should play ronaldo more because ronaldo needs like 2 or 3 players to mark him out, 3 mostly. This causes massive overload and will give other attackers space to score. Ronaldo makes it 3 1 9 not 3 1 6. If you noticed when you bring in rashford and martial from the bench with ronaldo on the pitch, it's easier for them to score, that's the reason. Ten hag needs to exploit this.
