I am German and bow to Bob Geldof, Sinéad O'Conner, the Pogues and all other Irish musicians.
Especially the Dubliners, who have been with me all my life and gave me an escape to German folk music.
I listened to this song to infinity and back when it first came out.

I have always loved this song. I just came here to listen to it again. But then I realized how brilliantly this video is done! Bob starts of well shaved, well groomed, properly dressed with a relaxed facial expression. But the further he gets into the song the more careless, carefree, dissheveled he becomes, more passionate, bordering to crazy even. Genious! It's the little things: a look here, a raised eyebrow there, a shrugging shoulder, the laughing of the man on the left with the huge gap between his teeth, the timing of the dancers... Magnificent! I keep watching the video over and over again and not just for the song/the singing/the music itself, but the whole video is a masterpiece!
This guy saved my life when I was 20, 40 years ago..and he doesn’t know it. But he did. And I’m so grateful. Eternally grateful.
