The Irish Rover - The Dubliners & The Pogues

- From The Late Late Show - Tribute to The Dubliners March 1987
This is the first performance of their hit single - The Irish Rover which reached number 8 in the UK singles charts. It was Eamonn Campbell who came up with the idea to record a song with The Pogues for The Dubliners 25 Years Celebration album that he was producing at the time. It was Barney McKenna who thought of the song. One of the great collaborations. - Hudba

Your only getting away with that if your Irish and with Fagan I'm guessing you are and so 😄😆😅😂🤣
That only applies if alcohol ruined your life, not if it’s a part of your life.
😂🤔😂🤔😂
😂
Haha! Brilliant!
RIP to Shane McGowan - A poet, a punk, a legend 💚💚💚 X
😔☘💚
🇮🇪☘️😢🙏🏼
😢
Absolutely!! What a talent! Rest in peace Shane ❤
RIP 🍀
RIP both Ronnie Drew (1934-2008) and Shane MacGowan (1957-2023).
Two wonderful vocalists of two great folk Irish bands who will be remembered forever.
This performance just sees the Dubliners and Pogues enjoy a good laugh on stage with a modern Irish jig still played every 17th March today.
They got soul.
Thank you for this!
I love how you can see the mutual admiration and respect between them, and the fiddler for the Dubliners and the Tin Whistle player for the Pogues, just continue to grow throughout this performance.
Sorry for not knowing the name members names.
They will be always in Our hearts, never will forget them.
You just broke my heart. Thank you though. I didn’t know.
Not ashamed to say I cried hearing about Shane McGowan today. What a talent. Will never not love The Pogues (and the Dubs), especially this song.
Same .
😔☘💚
It broke my heart, not a good day, heard it before anything else. Rest In Peace, Shane
I broke my fvcking heart. What an artist and a poet.🍀
I did too another irish legend gone unfortunately ❤❤
The blood alcohol level on that stage would have defied physics. And yet, a true and brilliant performance.
Shane could have stood alone on that stage and your statement would still be true.
Ronnie Drew wasn’t a drinker
@@conormccaffery5821in irish metrics, yes
lol@@conormccaffery5821
As a Dane it was the very first time i found someone who could keep up with my drinking!
The fact that the younger musicians looks so happy to play with these legends and that the older musician looks at the younger musician with proud eyes is really beautiful.
Yeah, but this is from back in the mid-‘80s. Now those “younger” guys are really much older.
Nicely observed
@@bargainbassist yeah that's called Time.
@@LD-rs1oj haha yeah, astute observation

Anyone watching this in 2024. RIP Shane McGowan
Still here for the good vibes! RIP nigga.

Shane deffo packed a lot of living into his 65 years
😢 best song
Shane MacGowan died last of November last year (2023-11-30) but at least he had fine teeth on that point. It was nowhere like this.
RIP Shane. An eternal legend of Irish folk music.
Correction: an eternal legend of music.
@@chrismullan7191 The utmost respect to Irish music, that is part of the World Heritage. Dante Alighieri mentions the Irish singers in the Divine Comedy.
I want to be in a tiny Irish pub, with a low ceiling, wood panelled, Guinness in hand and singing this with everyone there. Love Ireland. 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Seans Bar is the place!
They gonna kick you out the pub haha
Congrats! You just described the ideal St. Patrick's Day.
me too!!!!
Im there with you brother
Its crazy how many people come back to this everyday... this song is a masterpiece!
Everyday!
I just found it , reminds me of grandad born in dublin mvd 2 NZ 2 run a MUCK
Amen to that
I added it years ago and I still come back every once in a while, and I always want to think that billions of people listen to this all the time. Then I get confused when the numbers are all the same year after year. I believe we're being scammed.
I can’t get enough
What a Legend and a poet. Alcoholism is a disease and sadly it took him. But he wrote the the songs of my youth and many others. Sleep well Shane
R.I.P. My man passed away while I was i was having a super rough go in rehab. His music has forever changed my life and he will be surely missed..
hope your'e having a better go of it now mate.hang in there
The look on Ronnie's face when Mcgowen leads into the crescendo is just great, two bands showin' each other a glimpse of the different roads they walked. Just awesome.
I can never stop watching John as he looks at Spider whistling away on his pipe - every time they show him he's watching Spider play. Two bands that met at a perfect time. Brilliant.
Ronnie reckoned it was the fastest he'd ever had to sing.
And vice versa as ronnie takes off
As an Italian-American living in Germany this song makes me proud to be Irish.
Haha!
As a proud African-American living in China, this song makes me proud to be Irish.
As a New Zealand Māori this makes me proud to be Irish.
As Japanese jew living in Saudi Arabia, what are you all talking about!!!🤷♂️
😂
I'll never tire of this. Everyone seemed to be having such a blast. In the middle of a party, a song broke out.
RIP my Brother - Youre a f..... legend. Your music will resonate until this stupid world goes down
Performances are so choreographed these days. I love how free and fun this performance is. Just pure fun 🤩
And by the looks of it a couple of them were drunk.
THEY DIDN'T MISS A NOTE🤗👍
It's the Irish way - *don't worry about the horse 🐎 being blind, just load the wagon* 💪☘️🇮🇪🎶
listen to the Irish futbol fans singing *"Fields of Athenry"* at the end of match in 0-4 loss to Spain (easy to find on CZcams) - the undaunted Irish spirit on full display
I don't get how either singer doesn't at least tap their feet to this. I wouldn't be able to resist.
agreed
I am Latino and have zero ties to Ireland but this music resonates with me so much 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
That's what it's all about!
Depending on where you are from, look up "Saint Patrick's battalion". There's even songs about them here on CZcams.
@@patron8597 My grandparents were from Mexico. Never new about St. Patrick’s Battalion til now. It all makes sense now 🇮🇪🇲🇽🇮🇪🇲🇽
Eso no tiene nada que ver. Yo tampoco tengo un carajo que ver con Irlanda pero al que no le guste esta música no tiene alma.
There were irish sections in a Mexican Regiment but he bulk of the irish emigration towards non english speaking countries went almost exclusively to Argentina
Rest in peace shane McGowan 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪 we've lost another Irish legend 🙏

The literal fusion of Trad and Punk. One of the top 5 greatest collabs of all time. Fight me.

I don't believe there's a drop of Irish blood anywhere in my family tree, but maybe I've been reincarnated. I love this. RIP, Shane MacGowan, I am very sad about your passing. Thanks for all the hours of beautiful music.

Same brother! 💚🍀🇲🇽🇮🇪
Dubliners - the streamlined, grown classic version, Pogues - the authentic version, feels like a flashback into the 19th century directly into the harbour with all the sailors. Both great pieces of art.
RIP Shane. This is a legendary performance by The Pogues and the Dubliners. ❤
💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
Yep it always makes me laugh .Great memories and Shane was same age as me and i was born in Dublin and grew up in England but we both always called our selves true Dubs .I used to come back to Dublin and stay in Crumlin and Ballyfermot and loved the crack .There is no place on Earth with the Dublin sense of humour .God Bless up the Dubs
Magic between two legends, both Ronnie and Shane and The Dubliners and The Pogues.
Imagine the session that Shane, Ronnie and Luke are going to be having up in heaven tonight. 😁
As st Patrick’s day approaches I can’t help but think of this man.

RIP Shane - A man passes but from this a legend emerges - Your music will live for ever.☘☘
When you listen to this you automatically become Irish for at least 30 seconds.
R.I.P Shane McGowan, beautifully clear in voice for this performance.
Everyone wants to be Irish
@@igorstein5616 In the same way that we are all Palestinians, every man and woman who stands for freedom and solidarity is an Irishman.
Oh oh oh and anyone who has a problem with that statement has no right to be listening to this music. I said what I said.
Everyone has a bit of Irish in them, the menfolk get around
Im Scottish and a Rangers supporter but godamn I luv this tune! Brings tears to my eyes now that both singers are dead😢🏴🇬🇧
RIP Shane. He and Ronnie will be singing this again in heaven tonight.

RIP Shane you beautiful soul! So happy my brother introduced me to them and that I got to see them live!
The imperfections of these two bands on stage makes for perfection
Rest well Shane and thank you for making this world and life a better place
Stout, Smokes, Instruments and a microphone and these boys will have you entertained for days.. Proper old school Irish lads, proud to be part of this heritage...

Good memories of my trip to Ireland in 1987. Gérald From France. RIP SHANE
I'm not even Irish, but had some great nights in Spain at Irish bars singing and dancing to this! Great times and memories. RIP Shane.
The fun these guys are having together makes me warm inside.. the smiles on the musician's faces are priceless
The energy is second to none.
I remember the pogues at my father's 40th when I was 13. Beautiful time to be alive
Whatever it is , Shane had it. I think it's the authenticity. He lived it. A rare thing in Ireland these days. His funeral is in his home town on Friday. R.I.P Shane . A great Irishman. His songs will go on forever.
Rest In Power! 😔☘💚🤍🧡
Rare moment in time when these two groups can share a same stage at the same time. The audience, cameramen and the proverbial fly on the wall were all blessed to be here that night!
I watched this with my 10 year old daughter a few months back - she said, "Dad?!.....they're pirates!", "Indeed they are pet", I said, "good pirates!". We love Ronnie, The Dubliners, Shane, The Pogues and all the lads here. RIP, to the Great Shane McGowan. X
R.I.P Shane MacGowan a true poet and Celtic Punk progenitor, he has his place in history with a rich legacy left behind.
Waiting at the bar while Shane paves the gate lol
RIP to Shane McGowan - A poet, a punk, a legend
I keep revisiting this because I just love this performance, there are so many details I like. The fact that one of the lead singers is smoking and drinking at the start of the song, that one dude in the white sweater jamming out in the back, the guy with the piercings going crazy on the flute. No choreography whatsoever, everyone just doing their own thing, it's great.
The way their hands are in their pockets too haha
Can there ever be a better sight than seeing musicians enjoying playing together.
agreed its beautiful
What an amazing performance
Shane was having an absolute blast in this clip. RIP to a legend!
Simply outstanding performance 👏👏 RIP Shane a true Irish legend
It brings a tear to my eye, a tune that Donny Rovers play before every match. I hope this version will be played at the next home game, A sad loss.
😔☘💚
A true poet has left us.
RIP Shane a true legend to the simple life working class people of the world 🙏
😔☘💚
In my view, the working-class life is far from simple. But to your point, I agree that few singer-songwriters- back at the peak of the Pogues popularity and today- address issues important to the working class. Shane got it right. He spoke about us and to us in a way that never felt artificial or condescending. I’d happily trade a thousand Ed Sheerans for one more Shane MacGowan. Rest easy, mate. You earned it.
Addio Shane. Grazie 1000 per la musica che ci hai dato.
Jesus the pub will be packed in heaven tonight, sláinte lads 🍻
❤
The smiles on there faces just makes me happy 😅for me the best live performance ive ever seen
Happy St Patrick’s Day 2024 🍀

Ronnie Drew, what a man, a gentleman. A real Irish hero ☘️
🇮🇪☘
Absolutely fantastic… Days gone by but not forgotten. Thanks Shane 👍🏻
Cried my eyes out to learn Shane passed, absolute one of a kind R.I.P Gizer ❤
Look at the fun they're having! Brilliant.
i love the progression of the dubliners playing that day: tolerance for a stunt into patience for shane's 'unique' singing voice, into surprise the pogues know the songs note for note and can play it as tight as they can, into shock shane knowing the song beat for beat blindfolded but choosing to sound like a hardcare band the last verse. 10/10.
just heard of Shanes passing he was beyond talent a wonderful character RIP Shane
😔☘💚
What a terrific synthesis of music. These bands have really great chemistry together.
Don't know what's that in yer pipe you be smokin'.... But, YES, I whole heartedly AGREE!!!!!!!!!

Easy, they make the same kind of music
Always put this on when coming home after a few jars on the night and enjoy it but tonight it felt so much more poignant.
Rest In Eternal Peace to an absolute powerhouse I hope Shane knows how much people he touched in his time on this Earth he was truly special
THIS makes me proud of my Irish roots.
Great version! I love the deep voice of Ronnie Drew. I'm so Irish that I cry over his death every time I hear his sweet voice.
The Dubliners' and an English/Irish punk band...as good as it gets. And regardless of any oddities...all these lads, young and old, are tremendous musicians and performers.

As me I know some people in Germany in the 70th and 80th who loved to hear and play irish music. I have been in a concert with The Dubliners in this times ... full townhall with singing and dancing customers! LATER YEARS I too enjoyed The Pogues ... Like her style and a lot of songs ... still a bit sad about Shane Mc Gowan and his health ... I love his music and always "Dirty old town" and "Fairytale of New York" is going so deep in my heart ...
