- The Chieftains and Sinéad O’Connor perform ‘The Foggy Dew’ at the IRMA Awards.
The 10th Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) Awards take place in the Burlington Hotel, Dublin. The hosts for the event are broadcaster Ray D’Arcy and musician Eleanor McEvoy. During the ceremony, film director Neil Jordan presents Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains with the Special Industry Award in recognition of the group’s contribution to Irish traditional music since the 1960s.
The Chieftains then perform a version of ‘The Foggy Dew’ with singer Sinéád O’Connor. The band members are Derek Bell (harp), Matt Molloy (flute), Paddy Moloney (tin whistle and uilleann pipes), Seán Keane (fiddle) and Martin Fay (fiddle) and Kevin Conneff (bodhrán).
‘The Foggy Dew’ is included on The Chieftains 1995 album ‘The Long Black Veil’. As well as featuring Sinéad O’Connor, it also includes guest appearances from musicians such as The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Marianne Faithfull and Tom Jones.
The lyrics to ‘The Foggy Dew’ were written by a Belfast curate Father Charles O’Neill. The ballad praises the Irishmen who fought for Irish independence in the Easter Rising of 1916, rather than fighting for the British Empire in World War 1.
Highlights from the IRMA Awards were broadcast on Network 2 and 2FM on 1 April 1995. - Hudba
Rest in peace to Sinead O'Connor, one of the few true voices of the Irish isle. We'll deeply miss you.
Her son's death (last year) was obviously too much for her to cope with . I've suffered two Familly bereavements in the past 21 months , and it is difficult . I think time eases such pain , though , and its important to remember that . R.I.P to an Irish favourite from a time when we could produce musicians who had soul, talent and character.
Very special lady RIP 💚

I'm devastated at her passing. She was an original, completely without pretense. Talented beyond measure and beautiful in ways few humans can attain or imagine. Goodbye, Sinead.

On Easter Time 1916, my family from Cork city was killed and my great grandmother with only 15 years old took alone a boat to New York City. All her life, she had sad memories and she was very very sad for long time. No more Civil War against siblings, we must remember them always. In loving Memory of my g.grandmother Rosemary Vivien Mc Carthy 1900-1979, daughter of Sean Mc Carthy. Rest in Peace Sinéad!!! 😪🙏☘🍀
My people were Protestant dissenters. May Ireland be free, and may we all.
In memory of my then brave 16 yr old father who told his Mam, “I’m going to into Dublin for the uprising!” And she said, “No, you’re not, you’re too young!” He went shortly after and devoted 10 years to the Cause. He remains my biggest hero even to today! 🍀

My God. A song that’s been sung a thousand times by a thousand singers(many quite well), but after hearing Sinead put HER stamp on it, accompanied by the Chieftains, I don’t think that I ever care to hear another artist even attempt it. She gives me goosebumps and brings me to tears. Rest in Peace, you beautiful, delicate, troubled, talented, pure soul….🙏☘️🎼♥️😇
Indeed ... a fire burned deep inside that girl. Her emotional range and impact almost bowls you over. Her studio recordings are wonderful but her live performances convey her real power more cleary ... at least for me.

You don’t have to be a Chieftain fan, Sinead fan, Irish or of Irish ancestry to be completely in pure of this song. A small rag tag band of patriots took on the most powerful nation in the known world at the time.

I am not Irish but Foggy Dew by Sinéad O'Conner is one of the most beautiful and inspiring songs I have ever heard
n fact, one of Ireland's most enduring anthems was written by Fr Charles O'Neill and the blind musician Carl Gilbert Hardebeck. Born on 20 September 1887 in Portglenone, Co. Antrim, Charles O'Neill attended his local primary school before furthering his education at St Malachy's College, Belfast. (Google) But she sang it beautifully - a magnificent poem, the words to which match the depth of her talent and soul.

As down the glen one Easter morn
To a city fair rode I
There armed lines of marching men
In squadrons passed me by
No pipe did hum
No battle drum did sound its loud tattoo
But the Angelus Bells o'er the Liffey swells
Rang out in the foggy dew
Right proudly high in Dublin town
Hung they out a flag of war
'Twas better to die 'neath that Irish sky
Than at Sulva or Sud-El-Bar
And from the plains of Royal Meath
Strong men came hurrying through
While Brittania's Huns with their long range guns
Sailed in through the foggy dew
Their bravest fell and the requiem bell
Rang mournfully and clear
For those who died that Eastertide in the
Springing of the year
While the world did gaze with deep amaze
At those fearless men but few
Who bore the fight that freedom's light
Might shine through the foggy dew
And back through the glen, I rode again
And my heart with grief was sore
For I parted then with valiant men
Whom I never shall see n'more
But to and fro in my dreams I go
And I kneel and pray for you
For slavery fled, O glorious dead
When you fell in the foggy dew
