  • This last week, I sort of overdid it on the physicality (a lot) and I talk about it in this video. I also talk about eating out (ugh). But there's a ray of sunshine, and it's so incredibly bright: my sister is here! She's helping, and I can't tell you how great that is.
    In the video, I mention the Strassburg Sock, which helps stretch my calf muscle when I sleep, or when I'm sitting around doing nothing and want to stretch. Here's the link:

    I’m not on Keto anymore but still love your videos, you might consider vlogging your life a bit sometime because you’re relatable and funny and we need more ladies our age on CZcams. 😊 I switched to a Mediterranean diet but one tip I learned while researching that might help when you dine out is to order extra large salads, then one entree to share, with extra sides of vegetables. For instance, my husband and I get a large salad, split a fish filet or other protein, and ask for extra asparagus. For the wine temptation, drink a full glass of water when you’re seated. It makes it more difficult to overindulge in any other beverage! Best wishes with your reset and getting healthy and feeling great!

      Rene'S thanks for the tip. Mediterranean is a good choice (it is part of the low carb family of diets). I'm looking at more lifestyle videos. To me, keto isn't just about food. I believe health is 95% diet and 100% mental. That mental side is the tough part.

    Dot, I totally understand how you can lose your own health when you are the caregiver for a loved one. I took care of my mom and oldest sister here in my home until they both passed away. At the end of that traumatic period I weighed 345 pounds, was pre-diabetic and unable to walk without being absolutely air starved. My daughter had to start taking care of me. I saw a pattern about to repeat itself so I went on the Keto food plan and I got my life back and so did my daughter. Its hard to focus on you when all your attention is on someone else. I'm glad your sister is helping you out now. Maybe you can get back to your strict keto routine, meal prep and exercise so you can regain your health and control. I wish you much success and a speedy recovery.

    I have a suggestion that might just help with the eating out thing. 3 years ago I began back to back surgeries to replace my hips and knees. As soon as I was recovered from one I scheduled another. Changed my life! During the times I was able to cook I began to make double batches of dishes that freeze well so I would have some already prepared food as a backup for the post surgery days before I was able to cook again. It really helps even if you're not trying to eat right and probably not a bad idea at any time to have a few things made ahead. Hope this helps! So glad ypur sister is there to help with your mom! As a caregiver to my own mother I know how much help means! Take care!

    • @esabiha
      @esabiha Před 6 lety +1

      Jan Moss I did double batch cooking before I had kids (last month) and before a trip when I was away but the family was not. There was always something to eat in the freezer that was home made without the added sodium, sugars and fat. I still do it from time to time just to have something “just in case”.

    • @janmoss656
      @janmoss656 Před 6 lety +1

    One of the benefits of this lifestyle is becoming so much more aware of how we have become addicted to eating patterns. I avoid dining out for the very same reasons, plus I immediately begin to minimize the potential cheat or try to justify that it is only ONE meal. The mind and habit are powerful things and often they win if I’m dining out.
    I do celebrate when I have been strong and had a carb item exchanged for broccoli or Brussels Spouts etc. I view this as a major win as it shows me that my mind is healing and my distorted view of certain foods growing weaker.

I've not shared this however my keto battle is all over the place... my FIL has Parkinson's disease and is battled it for 10 years, however He recently started deteriorating quickly, I've now moved 6 hours from my home in East Texas to West Texas- and my Inlaws eat mostly out of boxes... I'm a 6x cancer conquer so I have had a certain diet for many years... and went mostly Keto in the past year due to 8" of my intestines being removed and Keto has been working better...
    So as I've been co.ing here since May, my weight had been all over the place... mostly up! 😕. So now that im here more due to Dads decline, im allowed to cook more, so im introducing more Keto to them... they love it, however some days it just won't work for them... soooo I do what I can, and know when Dads journey ends, I'll be able to get much more strict and will feel so much better.

    Thanksgiving dinner was a hit. I overheard my brother in law say he liked the (Keto- Gluten free) stuffing better than the traditional one. Score!
    I am going out for dinner with the girls to an Italian restaurant later this week. Yikes. I know I will be able to order something without pasta but still. . . and I will offer to drive so I will easily resist ordering wine. Hopefully I got this. Regular stretching and the magic sock will eliminate the pain and bring back functionality. But I'm looking at at least 6 months of consistency -- that's key. Sounds like you have a good plan for the Italian restaurant. Just beware of sauces -- they love putting sugar in red sauce and flour in white sauces. But all you can do is make the best decision and enjoy yourself while being mindful of what you are eating. Wine definitely makes that harder. Good luck!

    Oh wow Dot, while I'm happy to hear about your mom and sister, I'm so sorry to hear about your foot/ leg troubles 😥. Reminds me of a previous MS attack i had, when I unintentionally and unknowingly tore my meniscus, slowly over time, just from walking up and down my street doing nightly walks, because my body just didn't know how to control my muscles properly. (That happens). So yeah, one day I just woke up and mysteriously needed to use a cane and even a wheelchair on long trips. Haha, selfish Pity party over 😌 ANYWAY, that's history. Just wanted to let you know that I can definitely relate. And what you described with your foot not flexing correctly is also similar to an MS thing I can have in occasion, it's called foot drop. I think there are electronic things they have that can help with that...If one has it debilitatingly enough (I do not)..I wonder if there is something your provider could obtain that would help in your particular case?
    Oh, and also!! My husband purchased (for himself) a sort of boot that he would wear at night, and it did pretty the same thing that your strassburg sock does !! If you ever are unhappy with yours, look into it. It was easy enough to get on Amazon... Large Cam Walker Fracture... www.amazon.com/dp/B005HDHZQW?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

    Dear Dot, I watched this and thought isn't it so true that most of us maturistas go through similar situations, usually at the time of life when we should be enjoying life after shedding children and jobs. Of course it doesn't happen! And we somehow feel guilty for everything that does happen. As far as keto is concerned, isn't it supposed to be a lifestyle? And life goes up and down. I still believe it is great, but hey I'm off on a cruise with my husband next week. The food isn't a problem until after martinis. I have discovered that discipline dissolves in alcohol! Keep up the exercises for yourself! Love from UKx

    Thank you so much for your video. I appreciate the reminder to add plantar fasciitis stretches to my regular daily exercise. I agree wholeheartedly with you that eating out is a great way to sabotage our Ketogenic Lifestyle. It was a near-constant setback when I would agree to go out. I am getting back into my old routine of a delicious and filling BPC every morning to start my way of eating off on the right foot. I will be starting the Keto Carnivore Diet as of this morning. I weighed myself upon rising (using three scales...2 electronic and 1 is my Health-O-Meter “doctor’s office sliding weight scale) and was amazed that both electric scales were off by at least 1 to 2 1/2 pounds. I’ve begun my diet journal in writing down what I eat, when I eat and the carb content as well as my daily weight, my water intake and my hours of sleep. It gives me such control and a mental block to stopping myself from indulging...”nope; I’ll have to write it down if I eat that”. I drink at least a gallon of water per day and try to get at least 8 hours of sleep daily. The last is the hardest! I’m also thinking of adding an “emotion” section to advise my mental health at the start of each day to see exactly how what I ate the day prior made me feel (tired/lethargic, happy/content, etc.). I’m so happy for your Mom, your sister and for you. I know the stress taking care of a loved one can create. We women have a tendency to forget our personal needs when others take precedence in our lives. Keto On, Dot!

      Congrats on losing 22 pounds! That is awesome. That recipe can be turned keto. If you are looking to dramatically lower the carbs, I'd use 1 C of onion and rethink the root vegetables (which are high in carbs). Radishes or 1/2 a Rutabaga can work. 1 carrot can be ok, just depends on how many the dish serves. And of course leave out the sugar. If you want the sauce sweet, I'd recommend a low carb substitute or instead mix in some heavy cream with the sour cream. Let the dairy's natural sweetness replace sugar. As for the flour, I'd use guar gum (1/4 tsp at most). And instead of 1 cup of wine, I'd use 4 ounces and make the rest up with beef broth. Cheers!
