  • This is a technique I've only ever seen done with fabric but I wanted to try it with yarn. So I cut off the bottom of a 2 litre plastic bottle and loaded in the yarn, acid dyes and ice, using the dye over ice method. And of course, there was an extra skein of yarn underneath the suspended bottle so not to waste any dye that dripped out of the bottle. After the ice melted, I steam set the yarn in bottle and added a bit more dye to the extra skein in a low immersion set up.
    Featured in this tutorial:
Yarn: 2 x 100g Superwash Merino in DK
Dye: Black acid dye from DT Craft and Design, Hyacinth and Spearmint Breeze acid dyes from Dharma Trading.
All equipment (pots/spoons/jars etc) used in this video is dedicated for dyeing.

Yes! Random color!! So much fun, especially when you are able to use multiple dye techniques. Love it!

UK here. Just found your channel and I will definitely be doing this. I love ice dyeing but have only ever used cotton fabric before. Thanks.

Cool! Definitely a fan of experimentation, so I'd definitely say yes, experiment away! One thing I was thinking of with the bottle and ice dyeing is perhaps you could layer the dye a little in the yarn hank and then add the ice. I bet it would be a bit different effect. Just curios. Thanks for a fun video!

That’s a great idea! I’ll definitely be doing that next time. Thank you for the suggestion ❤️

I agree, I think you'd get more even color thru the yarn

When I have my mask on, it sounds like I'm out of breath. I'm fine though! Thank you for asking :)

I've never seen ice dyeing like this before, it's amazing. Would you be able to advise where I can buy the stand you use for the bottle please? Thank you x

The stand I'm using is one I got years ago for holding silicone candle moulds. The closest I've found online now is metal wax melt/burner stands. Something like this might work: suppliesforcandles.co.uk/product/black-wax-burner-on-silver-stand?gclid=Cj0KCQiAsburBhCIARIsAExmsu74PyWdPgqTWlbgE0FmxDd0Q9o9v9IY0KyjJN40ZjkhdQ3ot-RSwJQaAqjMEALw_wcB
As long as the dish the wax is melted in is removable, I'd think it would work for this ice dyeing method.

I have always wondered why people don't but a yarn in the bottom for a second dye lot.

I always try to use up as much dye as possible. That extra skein is always fun and unpredictable.
