    i started knitting about a year ago and my grandma (who doesn't knit much anymore) sent me a small part of her stash over the holidays, including 250g of a 70% wool/30% nylon yarn in some kind of off white/cream colour which i'm not crazy about but this popped up in my youtube recs and now i'm contemplating trying to dye it :D

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Před 4 lety +2

      YES! You can easily start playing with dyeing using food coloring and vinegar in your kitchen (artificial food coloring - I recommend the Wilton color right system which you can frequently get with a coupon at big craft stores) That is how I got started before transitioning more to commercial dyes.

    I really like the idea of doing the minis with the larger cakes. I hope you get the opportunity to knit up one of the sets so people can see the effect. (Or have someone knit it up for you.) There are so many patterns right now that call for gradient yarns, such as shawls with lots of different stitch patterns. The longer stretches of color in the large cakes would be really intriguing with the shorter repeats of the mini skeins. Really nice idea. (It kind of reminds me of fractal spinning.)

      Since this is a gradient technique on its own, I might not do it unless I was trying to layer another type of color on some minis I already had. BUT I was super curious to see if I could do this and was thrilled with how it turned out!

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Před 4 lety +4

      For sure - for more even color coverage movement and more water volume help. I don't really want the color to be even here - the goal is some amount of asymmetry. You also need to be careful moving some types of yarn (especially if it is not superwash) in hot water too much since it can cause felting.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Před 4 lety

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Před 3 lety

      Hi Jo - It is a stand alone device similar to what some gyms have for swim suits. It is like a spin cycle on a washing machine and removes liquid really quickly so things can dry faster. Here is the review of the one I use czcams.com/video/cDMp-qz1Yf4/video.html (This model was discontinued shortly after the company gave it to me so I don't mention the brand very often.) It lives in my kitchen full time and means I drip less around my house. It is something I didn't know I needed and now that I have it..... ti is amazing!

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Před 4 lety +1

      I think that this would provide more color coverage on the inside. However, one of the perks of this technique is the uneven color coverage. BUT you might get some more fun reverse speckles.... so I might need to find a meshy tube!

  • @Kim-py3iv

    Does yarn shrink when you boil it? And does it became more ruff? Thanks

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Před 4 lety +2

      I haven't tested the shrinkage. I have noticed that some yarns become more "fluffy" with dyeing, which could result in a shorter length, but the yarn should still block out the same. Sometimes bare yarn suppliers plan the yardage around the yarn dyed versus the yarn in the skein, but I'm not sure if all companies do this.
      As for texture, most yarn doesn't change the texture much with the dyeing. If it does I will always mention it in my conclusions!
