How Sony can seemingly go from the greatest Spider-Man films in the animated Spider-Verse films to complete and utter trash like these movies is beyond my comprehension.
Something tells me that Sony is ran by different people who some of them know what Spider Man actually is and need and the other ones just like to throw whatever the hell the Spider Man material has without a good script to work with
Sony hasn't made a decent live-action comic book movie (without Marvel's direct help), since 2004.
A mark, a yen, a buck or a pound probably has something to do with it.
Different teams
They're so desperate to have a sustainable Spiderman universe to show Disney they don't need them to keep a live action Spiderman relevant.

Its only because they were cheap. That's legit the only reason why there were brought in. or blackmail. Those are the only two options that happened, there is no in-between.

They where cheap, they where connected with the studio, and they couldn’t find other writers who wanted to do the project. The trifecta of how you can find work in Hollywood regardless of talent.

At some point I just accepted that wasn’t going to happen… and I wasn’t happy about it, but again accepted it.

Sony is so weird. Outside of their core Spider-man films, they don't seem to have any idea of what to do with their superhero films.
Because their core Spider-Man films are handled by Marvel Studios creatively.

That's because they only have one superhero and all of these "other superheroes" were originally meant to support the core hero's narrative. I'm not saying stand-alone spinoffs can't work; Joker and Venom can attest to that but there's not much there yet Sony keeps digging. Who knows maybe Kraven or that el Muerto character that only appeared in a single Spider-Man story will be a hit.🤷♂️
Dan Murrell was in the Amazon with my mother who was researching spiders right before she died.

My guess is it's a vision from the villains perspective from relatively early - why he's afraid, or a vision from DJ's perspective near the end - what she has maybe unleashed by saving them.

To be fair "Dakota Johnson floats through it and doesn't seem to know what she's supposed to be doing there" could describe any Dakota Johnson performance I've seen.

I thought she was great in Cha Cha Real Smooth, so with the right material, she can do well. But that's the only performance I've seen her do that I've liked (also didn't like the other films themselves).

Sony might possibly be the most out of touch studio ever… this goes way back to Garfield’s planned trilogy. When the Sony emails got leaked they were discussing/planning the most bizarre ideas I’ve ever heard

I don't remember what channel or when I saw a trailer of this movie, but I remember it looks more like thriller and doesn't seem like a superhero movie. So when the title "Madame Web" shown, I was like "wow, they made her origin movie like Final Destination!" Yeah, I give the movie maker too much credit.
But thinking about it again, while probably still bad, if this movie not use superhero stuff but instead use supranatural detective story, it would far more interesting

Of all reviews I saw for this movie until now, Dan is the most polite and nice one, because he gave it "not a fan" score, while Jeremy Jahns gave it a straight up "dogshit" score.

I like Madame Web, the character, as a concept. She knows a lot about like the future and different realities, but only in the limited scope of spider related stuff. I also don't mind the idea of a teamup movie of Arana and other various spider ladies. However, taking those and mashing them together and getting the Morbius writers to Morb them together was... a choice, for sure.

Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless co-wrote many other "great" scripts for movies such as Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter, Gods of Egypt and the 2017 Power Rangers movie. Morbius is just their latest gem. It's not that they simply wrote a bad script once upon a time, they systematically and reliably deliver bad movie scripts. Perhaps it's a Mel Brooks "The Producers" situation.
I kinda like Gods of Egypt! Yeah, it's completely insane, but it's got some actual heart.
I can't speak to any of the other films though!

Pretty much that exactly. It was the future yet to be. Honestly wish they wore the suits in the film, but it was a huge tease instead. Bummer deal. I guess it was some idea to save it for a sequel. Which is not happening. I think 🤔
@@kadosho02 oh yeah it was totally just to get people in the theatres. The only reason I kinda wanted to see it to see them in action 😂 heard it’s on Netflix now, still haven’t watched it. Saw all the terrible reviews on CZcams though. I’ll watch it one night when I’m drunk 😂

Madame Web is the movie equivalent of ordering a club sandwich at a restaurant and the most appetizing thing about the entire sandwich is the toothpick holding it together

I figured that the three Spider girls would be in brief flash back scenes. These movies are only loosely based on Spider-Man characters.
The thing with deceptive advertising, if that is what you use to make people see the film, what you think will draw the people in, why didn't you just go out and make that film to begin with?

I think it's Andrew Garthfields universe. The alternative ending on the amazing spiderman 2. Peter meet his dad who works for some government department in hiding. This lines up to what lines up.
Well I guessed wrong yesterday. This makes more sense than a Dune Part 2 review coming out 2 weeks before it releases.
I can't believe this film was made. Its like a groovy psychedelic Barbarella Sequel coming out in 1985.

That's because, unlike Sony (excluding the animated Spider-Verse films, the Tom Holland movies and the few good early Spidey films), we expect better from the MCU, and we have had better from the MCU.
Well it's a base line issue. The Marvels is infinitely better than this bilge, but compared to the rest of the MCU it is mid.
Whereas these Spider-Man adjacent Sony films are all worse than The Marvels but about the same quality as each other.

As a Female director/writer why would you make your young female characters do absolutely nothing, show no promise of what they may become or any heroic characteristics? They are literally and figuratively passengers of the movie.

A couple of major blunders here. One, they didn’t introduce this character in Spider-Man or venom movies. Two, fans are tired of girlboss movies.
I would have loved to have seen a Madame Webb appearance in Spider-Man in the same way as in the animated TV series. I’m guessing that’s where this is heading at some point… just with a young girl instead of a wise elderly woman lol
You know, if there were only some source material out there, I’m thinking like decades worth, these writers could pull entire stories from.
That would be a great set of tools if it only existed.

I appreciate the mention of no spider team suiting up. I was dubious on that, but ready to go watch the train wreck if there was a superhero result at start of third act just to see. Good info.
The original Madam Web, I think she first appeared in 1981 or 84, was one of the coolest characters to show up in the Spiderman universe in a long time. A frail old lady, blind and hooked up to a funky DIY life support machine, with massive psychic abilities, was a great addition to an otherwise boring Kraven (I think it was Kraven) storyline. Still, the key ingredient to all this is Spiderman. Take Spiderman out and you got nothing.
I hope Dan makes an "If I ran Sony's Marvel universe" video.
As a massive Spider-man fan I really wanted this to be good but we all knew what we were getting when we first heard a Madame Web movie with no Spider-man by Sony was coming - dog sh!t. We knew.

I thought it was a solid 10/10. The part where *spoiler* Kraven showed up at the end and said, "Looks like I got caught in your web. It's kraven time now" had me in SHAMBLES. I'm so excited to watch it again!

I saw the cast list and I thought maybe. Then I got the writting credit and said no. I watched morbius because I love Matt Smith more than I hate jared leto but these writers have burned too many bridges.
Yeah that's a problem with some movies instead of focusing on making a good movie. There are to focused on either setting up for sequels or setting up for their own Cinematic Universe.

I went to go see it this weekend with my friend. I LOVED it.
Not because it was good. But because I love watching befuddling, insane, terrible movies. One of my favourite’s is Jupiter Ascending. If you’re the kind of person who likes that kind of thing, I cannot recommend this enough.

hi Dan. when I first heard they were making a Madame Web movie, I was hoping she looked like what she looked like in the comics: imposing.
Dakota Johnson can be described with many words, all positive, except anything having to do with those 3 movies. However, imposing, she is not.
I'm waiting for Pitch Meeting. Producer guy has a lot of explanation to provide.

I think it comes down to a weird contract stipulation. I read somewhere that they lose their exclusivity for Spider-Man and X-Men if they go more than a certain amount of time. So they just phone one in every year or two. Don’t really know if this is true but it sure would explain the inconsistency.
6:26 Completely agree with leaving behind 2000s superhero flicks but come on no need to rag on Roger Moore’s Bond, we love the dude, cheese and all. I think bringing back the Moore era would be a lot better than the mess of Spectre and No Time To Die which takes their muddled convoluted plots wayyy too seriously. I’ll take Octopussy’s weird triple entente villains over childhood-trauma grudge-holding Blofeld anyday

I've been a comic book and cartoon fan for decades and at no point have I ever said Madame Web needs her own movie. She has a cool look currently in the comics but she really only shows up to set one of the Spider people on the direction the story needs.

i hated the false advertising but still liked what we got. i remember specifically watching it thinking "this couldve worked as a decent superhero film in 2010" and can see everyone felt the same way. the whole opening sequence didnt need to be there and so much of the dialogue was terrible but i couldnt help have fun with it in a weird way
