To quote Loki's Season 2 finale: "It's a scaling problem". The MCU began making 1-2 movies a year and didn't scale up to 3 movies a year until nearly a decade had past. Yet when Disney+ was created, they started with 3 series a year. On top of that, of course, is that TV makes up many more hours than films do. We're not just mad about how disappointing The Marvels was, but rather that disappointment is compounded with the anger about Eternals, Multiverse of Madness, She-Hulk, Quantumania, Secret Invasion etc. I really wonder if Marvel will start taking projects off their calendar (Thunderbolts and Blade are prime contenders)

@@GothamClive "Was stupid on purpose" That doesn't excuse how messy, jumbled, convoluted, badly paced the movie was. That doesn't excuse how absolutely terrible the villain was. That doesn't excuse how the comedy in this movie falls completely flat. Just because it's stupid on purpose doesn't mean that it's a good movie if the story isn't compelling. I mean, look at Guardians of the Galaxy, it had some comedic moments because the characters started off as douchebag and thieves but James Gunn managed to tell a compelling story so that the audience could take the characters seriously whenever the movie needs to be. You get a lot of fun moments but you also get some emotional scene like when Groot sacrifice himself to save the Guardians from Ronan's ship collapsing and Gunn did the latter perfectly because he fleshed out Groot and Rocket's relationship perfectly. Whereas this movie, you don't care about a single character involved because the previous movies does a poor job setting them up (aside Ms Marvel) and by the time the movie was about to meet it's third act where you have a big fight with the villain, you just don't care because the movie does a poor job handling them with cringe dialogue and an undeveloped villain

I think Marvels big problem right now is that they were able to take B-List heroes like Iron Man and Captain America, important in their respective Universe sure but middiling in ours, and turn them into giants. They believe that they can do that with anyone. Throw Echo on screen and she will become the next Punisher. Maybe if this was 2008 when all eyes weren't on them, Marvel was hungry and the most importantly the stories were there. Now were more connected than we ever were so the second a studio tries to pull the rug over our eyes its called out for what it is. Nobody asked for this and if you're going to do it in this climate of the decline of the Superhero genre, you better come out swinging.

I think this is the first time I'm in complete opposition to Dan's take on a movie - I don't think it comes close to being an "unmitigated disaster" as he called out before (and I'm someone who thought Captain Marvel completely fell flat in the third act), but I can understand the points he makes here. Totally agree the villain was pretty one note and just served as a means for the story to move forward, but I thought everything else in the movie was fun enough to not be as terrible as I was expecting it to be.

I liked the movie! I've also been following your reviews so i was quite surprised when you said it was an unmitigated disaster, and did not recommend. Thankfully i watched your reviews after the movie itself, but it didn't make me entrench myself further into the "i liked it and i dont care what you say" camp. I appreciated your perspective.
Like many others, i found it enjoyable, especially kamala and her family. I agree that many parts felt hodge podge- it felt to me like they wanted to promote the 3 of them as a team, but there was no real glue to them- carol and monica were from so many movies ago (also, how did monica age from preteen to a full grown adult while carol barely aged 😂), and Kamala's obvious idol worship of carol. I would've appreciated them having more scenes together, (like the training montage) such as the convo you mentioned between kamala and carol about making hard choices, and monica and carol's awkwardness not being resolved too simply. Ultimately if they had made it clearer who was the main hero of the group, and carol's character being fleshed out more, i would've enjoyed the story more.
For me the villain was alright, you could tell she was never meant to be a big bad but just "evil minion surviving to now become the evil boss", but i did feel sympathetic towards her. The skrull part and fury felt very detached from secret invasion though. But i did like the action scenes, iman vellani's energy for sure, and ultimately it was a simplistic story with likeable people in it. It doesnt make it great, but i dont think this is the worst mcu film just yet. It follows through on its stakes (unlike quantumania), and there is longer term impact.
All that said, i found it amazing (not in a good way) that Dan you had such pushback. Agree to disagree on this film, but you're still one of my favourite channels, and i will still look forward to your reviews!

Sometimes, like Dr. Strange, it works, sometimes like here they fail. The issue here I think is amplified as you note likely by an incohesive creative process that lead to a movie that was bringing a huge web of ongoing mildly connected threads to the table. My guess remains that likely they ended up with a slow and boring cut, with tons of exposition and transition scenes that made the movie clear but sucked and they decided to try to just take the best parts and hope people would just go along for the ride and have fun. If some did, cool right. If you didn't that's also cool, the movie is a mess, its not my fault or Dan's fault for noticing.

I think Larson's portrayal of the character is pretty spot on for how the character is currently depicted in comics. The problem is I don't like the character and most fans don't either. I get that Marvel doesn't have a Wonder Woman and they wanted this to be theirs. I think Elizabeth Olson does well with hers and let's hope Rogue and Storm are well cast and well written to be a valuable and enjoyable female character. To that end shoutout to Scarlett Johanson and Haley Steinfeld. They have done their characters justice

I appreciate and trust your opinion, Dan! Over the years I’ve found our taste overlaps so I rely on your reviews to know where I should put my money. Thank you for your service haha…

I’m one of the people who really liked The Marvels. It was fun, funny, I enjoyed the power switching action scenes, Iman did great. Definitely feel you were too harsh, but hey, feel how you want. Your track record shows you’ve always been honest and fair and NEVER hateful towards a specific person or group of people ❤

It's enjoyable that's fair enough. But didn't you feel it all a bit rushed? There is literally no time for conflict or introspection. Everything moves at 9G speed. The villain offers no real challenge actually. The resolution is also so dumb because apparently it took 30 years for Cap. Marv to figure out that she could have just charged a fkin sun which literally takes her a few seconds to accomplish. Absolute garbage from a story standpoint and by garbage I mean that there's no effort in even trying to go through the requirements of a plot. But fun if you're interested in a couple of good fight scenes but Marvel did way better way before

I went to go see this yesterday early morning. I completely agree with your review ( basically a trash movie). However the handful of people that were at the theater seemed to really enjoy it. One scene that really stood out to me was a scene where Monica Rambo’s hair was twisted for a few frames in a spaceship and the very next scene (still on the ship) it was brushed back out. Like how did they miss stuff like that? I guess with all the reshoots and cutting the movie up they miss things like that

Everyone is overwhelmed. It's easier to project a motivation onto Dan that allows dismissal than to incorporate criticism and re-evaluate your opinion.

I feel so bad for Iman Vellani. Literally the only part of the movie I liked. I didn't even care about the Beast cameo. Ms Marvel had a lot of potential in a time when the MCU wasnt so creatively bankrupt

Dan, you shouldn't have to explain yourself. The loudest parts of the internet are at the extremes, one way or another. You are pretty self aware, and you attempt to be fair in your reviews, and give your honest opinion. That's all we could ask for from you. Keep on keeping on.

I also wish we could at least see the other drafts or full script that was "supposed to have been shot" if not the at least 15+ minutes of "filmed but not completed movie" that could have been in this thing

I feel bad for Nia DaCosta. Would love to see what the "DaCosta Cut" was like. Probably a lot better than what we actually ended up getting. I also feel bad for the actresses that had to be a part of this career-breaking film, which really should have been a career-making opportunity!

Nia will be fine, she's beautiful, super talented and got paid enough to pay off her outstanding student debt. Sure, Marvel Studios are unlikely to hire her again, but they had full creative control over the film & she'll probably want to go back to Indie filmmaking & TV anyway. Theres shows like 'Gangs of London' that could do with her Camera expertise.
