    I hate how the marketing literally fools the audience. The fact that Henry Cavill was in front and center of the poster and his name was mentioned first in the cast list but turns out, his screentime was only about 5 minutes in a 139 minutes movie is such a bad marketing scam

      Placement of actors in posters and how high their name appears in billing is part of the contract process and is negotiated like compensation. The marketing team is required to follow those guidelines when they make the promotional material.

    I enjoyed the sheer absurdity of having a plot twist every five minutes once they started, every new one exponentially more bizarre that the previous, but I do also recognise it's not what everyone would enjoy. The CGI was indeed terrible but the cast was absolutely brilliant, I thought, and for Sam Rockwell alone it is a movie worth seeing if one can go along for the ride of the silliness if its plot.

    I wish filmmakers who are trying to make an original movie with no existing IP could just make an one contained entertaining movie first without having to worry about setting up a huge universe. John Wick, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Marvel succeed in making a huge universe because they managed to make an one contained movie first, the sequel happened because the first movie was an unpredictable success. @69johndz Před 4 měsíci +1

      Well, that's because there are no expectations to subvert anymore. Now it 's assumed in will be in every movie because everyone is doing the same thing. The movie ends with our male lead literally lying on the ground beaten and battered, accepting his death...literally under the heel of a powerful, "big boned" woman when suddenly...they are save by a female POC. The female spy is literally a better spy than Sam Rockwell in every way.
      I am not even saying it was a bad scene. Actually, the twist with the female POC was the only twist that I thought was clever and I liked. But, it is easy now-a-days to assume every move is going to end that way and...yup, it does. Nothing was subverted. Trust me.
      If today's filmmakers wanted to subvert expectations, they would do so by making a good movie with a good script.

    I saw the movie in an exclusive premiere and I strongly disagree with your opinion. The plot twists were (mostly) unexpected and they drive you through the movie without being too complicated; there are no multiple parallel plots. The CGI was anything but cheap, though it's intendedly cartoony: the colored smoke scene that is teased in this review is great cinematography, it reminded me of Harley Quinn's killing scene in The Suicide Squad. Some things can be improved, of course, for example, Henry Cavill is being shown as the main protagonist and he's far from that.
    I found it very refreshing. The premise passes from seemingly crazy fantastic to actually making sense. It's hard to be more specific without spoiling anything, but I can hardly see this as a lazy production or having a screenplay that's a mess.

    Absolutely no way this movie is coming close to simply breaking even on its reported $200m cost in its theatrical run! Until recently, Apple were more responsible with spending MUCH less e.g. $35m on CODA that won 3 Oscars in 2021 & got record viewership on Apple TV+. Some (most) directors just seem to work better when constrained by a smaller budget like Layer Cake's $6.5m budget as compared to Argylle's $200m!

    • @veronicamaine3813
      @veronicamaine3813 Před 4 měsíci

      As Dan pointed out not the budget - the price apple paid for (along with rights to franchise etc). Vaughn has said the move did not cost 200 mil to make - and that might be the reason it looks so cheap. The cast is so 'superstar' studded I think a lot of whatever budget he did have went on that and left the cgi/scripting etc on the cheap. I give apple a pass here because the movies that are being released were greenlit in a time when everyone int he industry thought the box office was gonna have a big comeback post pandemic. To be fair, this isn't Apples core business and they are a cash rich 100s trillion dollar company, so they can afford the loses- as opposed to the standard studio players, who made the same calls, and are now in serious financial trouble. I think Apple will change tact (as all studios have/will ), but there is a backlog of release that will still show the old thinking.

    Saw it tonight, did not hate it, love Sam Rockwell no matter what. TBH though there was too much talking about action instead of actual action. I’m not quite sure how to describe it better than that, it just felt like every scene they had to pause and analyze and discuss what was going on, instead of just… Getting on with it. like, I can’t remember the last time I thought a movie with so much action felt.., “slow” somehow 😅
    Wanted to like it, enjoyed the camp and cheesiness and secondhand embarrassment of the experience 😅😅

    I found the over use of bad CGI in this film painful. The film was 20-30 minutes too long and even I who is normally oblivious to internal differences in the script could tell that they tried 'to find it in the edit'. Sam Rockwell was trying his best, but they clearly shot at least two different versions of his character. Then there is the cat (who is adorable and did nothing wrong) which looked to me like they replaced it entirely, there were multiple scenes where I could tell the actor was touching air, did they only have the cat for a narrow time window, or did they change cats entirely?

    Possibly the worst movie ever made 1. the entire point of the movie was to bring the people on the list to justice and instead they decided to blow them all up 2. she just stuck random ass knives with handles and decided you can ice skate on oil and the entire point of that scene was that there was oil so they couldn't shoot anyone but at the end just decides to shoot while spinning around 3. the gas was just colored smoke so they didn't need gas masks at all and somehow the gas masks made it so they could see through smoke 4. before uploading there were just random ass shots of Samuel Jackson watching a Lakers game before a major operation 5. in the fight scene near the end he got punched a few times and just decided to give up and let them win 6. when she killed the hacker how did the plan for them to escape get laid out and how was there still gas in the boat and finally 7. the cgi was fucking terrible

    Also the toning down of bloody violence worked, remember it's a Spy thriller, just as James Bond is & there the violence is NEVER bloody, the public are willing to accept that, so why not here? contrast this toning down with the watering down in the ROBOCOP remake that could NEVER work with out it, and didnt because of the greatly different sci fi political story.

    I'm not going to disagree on the twist a minute feel Dan gave this, because yes it has some big degrees of plot whiplash at times, and by the end it gets predictable. That said I still had fun with the movie. The previews had enough to let me expect the feel of what I got from the movie as far as effects. And the action while very bloodless was still fun and violent enough to have me wondering what craziness to expect next. For me I'd give a It's Fine on Dan's scale.

    Hi Dan. Money question about Argyle. So film critics have gone on about it costing 200 million dollars and how it doesn't look like it cost that much. Yet that is the amount Apple paid for the film not the 'budget' which Vaughn put together himself. So we have two 'costs' The cost to make the film and the cost to purchase the film Vs the box office. If the film cost say 100 million then there wouldn't be a publicity cost, as Apple would pay for that. So does that mean it the film would have made 100 million BEFORE it's release to cinemas? I mean how is the value/cost/budget/ profitability worked out in Argyle's situation? It seems much more nuanced than is being reported. Thanks and keep up the great work.

  • @stockicide
    @stockicide Před 3 měsíci

    Watched it in the theatre with my parents and we laughed the whole time. I'm surprised every online review of it is negative.
    It is a very silly movie, and seems to be making fun of pulp spy novels with the deliberately cliche twists it dumps on the audience at the end. Once you get to the colored smoke action/dance sequence and the skating on oil scene it becomes obvious that the movie is determined to be ridiculous, and I assume many people aren't up for that, which is fine.
    I loved it, although it is funny to learn how expensive this movie was to make, since it looks so low budget the whole time. Still enjoy hearing Dan's take, even if we disagree.

    I'm sorry you couldn't keep up with the plot twists, I know they came fast and hard. But each one propelled the movie toward its ultimate conclusion. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I sat through most of it with a stupid grin on my face. Henry Cavill plays the ultimate spy Argylle like a pro, he looks fantastic despite the flat top haircut, but comedy is not really his strong suit. Sam Rockwell is incredible and it is 100% his movie! I cannot say enough about this guy, every performance of his in every movie he has done is pure gold. Bryce Dallas Howard is always great to watch and plays off Sam Rockwell to perfection. In a film with many plot twists, she goes from strength to strength with every turn. This movie is silly in parts, exciting, funny, and totally enjoyable. But hey, that's just my opinion!
