  • Explore Zinc's key role in maintaining human health with Dr. Janet King, Executive Director of the Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI).
Although zinc was recognized as an essential nutrient for human health about 60 years ago, we still lack an indicator of zinc nutrition. This has prevented the implementation of programs and policies to ensure an adequate zinc intake for populations around the world. Consequently, zinc deficiency is a prevalent nutritional problem worldwide that contributes to nearly a half million deaths per year among infants and children.

Excellent dissertation. Thank you for sharing. Another interesting pathway of zinc are the zinc gates on our NMDA receptor sites. Hyman's studies on Autism and thimerosal have revealed that mercury has a strong tendency to occupy the zinc receptors, if zinc is not occupying them. This makes a lot of sense when learning about mercury toxicity and deformities, and mutations, and especially fear predispositions in people. Everywhere I have learned of zinc in the body, brain and various plant species, zinc seems to be critical in stabilizing and protecting cell membranes, plant stalks and leaves, as well as boats as a protective layer against corrosion processes. I think that it works in helping stabilizing our fear circuits as well as it interacts with GABA, as zinc helps regulate GABA receptors in the central nervous system. Mercury will not kick zinc off of its own receptors and take its place, but if zinc is deficient, and not occupying those receptors, then mercury can potentially occupy them. Mercury and unpredictable and involuntary behaviors are well known. Those NMDA receptors with the zinc gates, are found in the amygdala, hypothalamus, thalamus, temporal lobe, prefrontal cortex, and hippocampal regions in the brain. Currently, those gates stay closed, and do not open and close like most gated ion channels do. I keep asking myself, how could one mineral, have so much responsibility, It is much like the B6 of minerals. When you put coal burning soot and mercury release into this scenario, it sheds a whole new light on World War 1 and 2. After all, at the end of World War 2, we stopped using mercury chloride ointments and began using Penicillin, and we went to diesel powered locomotives. If you look at a USGS map of mercury deposition, and a map of the coal burning locomotive tracks, back in the day, they are an identical match, and I do not believe that to be a coincidence. The eastern half of the US is saturated in mercury deposition, ad the western half, only here and there. These here and there areas, correspond to tracks bringing supplies, including mercury flasks, to various mining operations. I am fully convinced that mercury becomes most toxic, when zinc is deficient.

Whoever this Dr. is, she shouldn't be teaching anyone about nutrition. Not even three minutes in and her ignorance of the subject is clear.

@RiseAboveit She said there are 40 essential nutrients. That's VERY outdated. The number of essential nutrients is closer to 90. Then she went on to say zinc has many roles unlike other things like Vitamin A and Iron...at that point I was done. Vitamin A, as well as iron, serve many key functions. For instance, Vit. A is needed for proper CELL DIVISION. Kind of a big deal. I'm sure she's a very nice lady but is wholly unqualified to teach nutrition. In 1947 this would be useful info.
