No one likes to hear this, but sometimes acne is genetic/ hormonal. What you eat, for some people, has nothing to do with it. Anyone with severe acne should go to a dermatologist. See what they say first. Honestly my acne got worse on a vegan diet, not correlated. Just bad timing, my hormones went out if wack. Eating super low fat could actually cause a hormonal change, and make the acne worse.

also there is a strain of bacteria that causes acne, oil on the skin traps the bacteria and clogs pores causing acne. Oil production is largely genetic, but can be kept at bay with cosmetic products. Diet plays a role, but these girls misrepresent every other factor.

the reason she won't do that is the same reason she advocates we listen to RDs: it takes a LOT of time to become an RD. She would have to go back to undergraduate school to get her B.S. in a field like organic biology (4 years) and need to complete four to five years of pre-med preparation, another four years of medical school, and three to seven years of residency. It takes a LOT of time, effort, and (not for nothing) MONEY to get a degree like that. As a new mother and soon to be a mother of two, this would probably spiral her into a depression and we wouldn't get amazing videos like these.

I found out my trigger was eating high glycemic foods like sugars and dates. And once I started eating a lot more fats (lotttsss oo avocado and nut butters) my hormones got balanced and now I have perfect clear skin.

For me it was the accutane caused really bad depression within days of starting it. Before the drug it I wasn't depressed at all about having acne, I just saw it as a phase and I had good friends no-one teased me. The accutane also caused really bad stomach problems, eye problems like super dry scratchy feeling eyes and more. I couldn't go out in the sun cause I'd burn and blister in minutes. Accutane was a living hell.

    From the FAQ page:
"Do you have to eat this way the rest of your life in order to keep your acne away?
It’s an individual issue. Once you clear your acne using the diet, you can add back foods you like one at a time if you wish, to see whether you get a breakout. We detail how to do this in the book. The bottom line: some people add back foods and immediately break out. Others can add back nuts, oils, other foods - and have no breakouts whatsoever. Everyone is going to be a little different. Use the diet to clear your acne, and then you can experiment, if you wish, to see what specific foods may be your triggers, or whether you can safely add some foods back."
I don't see anything wrong with this.

That's a great point, however with the stress that they put on eating low fat and the fact that the entire book they promote is about removing fats to cure acne, likely people aren't going to take one question from the FAQ section and run with it. It's much more likely that young girls/guys are going to want to do it for life the way Nina and Randa are. Not to mention in many of their videos they tend to heavily stress the low fat dogma unintentionally.

I really have to comment. I have cystic acne, and while there is a POSSIBILITY of a link between peanuts & walnuts encouraging higher androgen levels in women leading to acne, there’s NO definite answer or studies. I have found that walnuts really break me out, but other fats? No way. Avocado and chia do miracles for my skin. If anything, eating a high carb diet breaks me out.
My point in commenting this is there’s no way they can just market this diet. Acne is so variable from person to person. What may break someone out may not break another person out. There is no definite one size fits all acne cure besides medicines. For instance organic oatmeal really debloats me and makes me satisfied and awake, but makes my friend bloated and sluggish. Foods interact differently with people. And I really agree that just cutting an entire macro from your diet is INSANE. that screams a health or hormone imbalance waiting to happen.
All we can really do is just follow healthy diet guidelines, and if we really suspect a food is causing issues, like people with sulfur problems and broccoli, and cut that food out and just make sure you’re eating a replacement that’s just as healthy.
I love your videos Unnatural Vegan!!! Thanks if you read this far in my comment.

I had horrible cystic acne throughout high school and I tried every prescription there was, including accutane. When I went vegan my senior year (I'm talking hardcore junkfood processed vegan) just doing that cleared it up quite a bit. After 5 years of trying different "styles" of a vegan diet, I've found the ratios don't matter as long as I avoid soy. For whatever reason my skin hates it and I break out 100% of the time after consuming it. Even if there is no science behind that, it's what keeps my skin clear. I went to esthetician school and they never mentioned fat as a cause for acne. Refined sugar, dairy and deep fried foods were the main focus. It is definitely different for everyone. These girls should do what works for them but stop spreading pseudo science, even if their intention is good. * Also * Accutane is a LAST step that dermatologists only recommend once you've exhausted EVERY other option. I don't see how a doctor even let them take accutane after only trying one other prescription treatment. It is an extremely harsh drug. My personal side effects were: Hair loss on my head, body and eyebrows/lashes, severely dry and cracked skin (specially my lips), nose bleeds, migraines, dizziness and stiff joints. I still deal with some of these 7 years later. That being said, it is still one of the most effective treatments on the market today.

My friend saw my skin and changed her mind about Accutane (her doc had suggested it for her for years). She did the typical protocol and only side effect for her was dry lips as well. Best decision we both have ever made. No more face makeup or calling in sick to work due to embarrassment. Severe side effects are truly rare. Accutane is a lifesaver for a ton of people. Glad you are putting out the truth!
*Edited to add* there is a HUGE genetic component to acne having to do with decreased cell turnover. In that case, diet is not going to help. Everyone's rate of cell turnover is different. Retin-A (topical tretinoin) and Accutane increase the rate of cell turnover, which is why they usually help people with cystic acne.

I've been dealing with severe cystic acne for around 5 years now and I'm well out of my teenage years. (Yes, adult acne, it's a thing.) I've tried it all, all the topicals and all the oral medication that my GP, dermatologist and gynecologist prescribed. I've changed my skin care regime numerous times. I've changed my diet, quit dairy (and went vegan in the process), quit sugar, quit alcohol, quit caffeine and - now - quit oils and fats. And, no, I haven't seen any lasting results. I might just be one of those people who got their hopes up only to realize that they are one of the cases which were not mentioned in Nina and Randa's book. But you never know until you try it, right? So, yeah, I completely understand the appeal of this diet. This skin condition really gets to you. I know there are much worse illnesses out there, but acne has a way of chipping away at your self esteem and happiness that I would have never imagined. So many people suffer from this condition, not just physically but especially psychologically. It would have been a dream come true if this diet was the answer.

I did everything including various antibiotics and topical treatments through my dermatologist for over 6 years. I was too afraid to try accutane but I was fed up and decided to go that route. My cystic acne was cured by accutane which is basically mega doses of synthetic vitamin A over 6 months. I had to go in monthly for blood work and a check-up. In terms of skincare and food the basic idea is sugar is bad because it hardens collagen and dairy shouldn't be eaten by people with cystic. Aside from that (and that acne and other skin issues can be caused by vitamin defeciences aka the possible link between low vitamin e and kiratosis pilaris) licensed skincare professionals arent even supposed to make dietary suggestions unless that is also their field of study. When he is hungry, fruit and vegetables are at the ready along with cheeses and yogurts high in protein and there has been a improvement; and now he understands and thinks about what it is he is about to eat. If he is thinking of eating something "bad" he stops and thinks.

Hey, recently the prescription drug for the treatment of acne called Adapaline (brand name is Differin) became available over the counter at the pharmacy, target, Walmart, CVS etc. It is the most mild retinoid of the bunch and while It's extremely mild it is still very effective and safe. The side effects are mild dryness and possibly tight feeling skin but many people have no side effects at all. CZcams dermatologist Dr. Dray has a ton of great info for parents of teens with acne. I highly suggest you check out her channel and she will also explain how to use Differin and why it's so important to treat acne early (scaring and it's bad for teens self-esteem as I'm sure you already know). Good luck with your kiddo! :):) Also this medication is approximately $15 and you use only a pea sized drop for application so it will last a month or more. Cheers!! :):)

Even non vegans do not deny the studies that show the correlation between dairy and acne. While you do not need to obsess about eating a plant based diet, avoiding dairy for acne is a good idea.

Omega 6 dominant foods like peanuts reliably cause zits for me. The problem isnt fat, it's omega 6.
Unfortunately they are avoiding stuff like flax seed - which literally FIGHTS acne - because they are vegans eating omega 6 dominant diets and sensitive to acne. CRINGE fail.
Most vegan fats will trigger acne, because most vegan fats are omega 6 dominant, but not all. I would avoid peanuts if sensitive to acne, but like, if you add a little flax to the food you will balance the ratio and zits should not occur.
MANY times test this. Eat peanuts, get zits.
Eat flax, if i have zits, they diminish.
What i do is choose low omega 6 nuts like almonds, macadamia nuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds - nuts that either have very little omega 6 absolutely, OR have a not too bad ratio of omega 6:3. Then, i make flax / pumpkin cinnamon crackers and eat a few of those per day. Success. No more zits.
Peanuts i just avoid, literal zit fuel for me, i think just cuz its so high in omega 6 in absolute grams *and* almost no omega 3.
You know ANOTHER major contributor to acne is INSULIN, and if you are sensitive to hyperinsulinemic hormone acne, this diet is going to DESTROY your face.
The keys to fixing acne are
    1) Eliminate low quality dairy (cream, lower carb and higher quality grass milk dairy is less problematic)
    2) FIX your omega 6:3 balance, this is what ruins vegans
    3) LOWER insulin, hormone acne is exacerbated by insulin - this also ruins vegans
    4) Dont overload b12 (can worsen acne) and take zinc tablets
    DO this, clear skin.

    • @plainlyjane6540
      @plainlyjane6540 Před 5 lety +3

Its sad these dumb vegans are starving themselves because they cant figure out fixing omega 3:6 balance is the real problem, not fat in general. Monosaturated fats with very little omega 6 like macadamia nuts will be totally benign.
The only reason diet results are poor is most people dont understand the dietary correlates that trigger acne: 1) Omega 6 dominance 2) INSULIN 3) DAIRY being the 3 major ones, with #1 and #2 being big players for vegans.

OK, I have my own two cents to add to this. I have struggled with skin issues in the past because my skin is sensitive to shit foods, and have changed the way I eat almost solely because of that.
You know what diet has given me the clearest skin (literally not a single pimple, no matter if I'm on my period or not) without also making me hate everything and giving me amennorhea as well? A high fat no sugar (almost) plant-based diet. I'll be reintroducing carbs soon, cause I love them, but holy shit, nuts, flax seeds, olive/coconut oil, and vegetables (and a boatload of salt/Lite salt) made me look exactly like I wanted to for years, and for that I'm eternally grateful.
I always knew dairy made it worse, but beyond that I really had no idea what would cause my occasional (very small and tolerable) breakouts. I saw Nina and Randa's video, and since then tried that low-fat diet, and guess what? It didn't work at all. First of all, when I eat low-fat, my skin really isn't the best - still breaks out. And second of all, it has caused me to lose my period for months on end (I am skinnier now than I was then, and yet I still get my periods), which is a terrible thing, no matter what Freelee says.
So THANK YOU, Unnatural Vegan, for being the voice of reason here - your work is MUCH needed and appreciated!

Wow! can't believe i was featured on your video! I've been a fan and watching you since I began my vegan journey( I was the first photo shown). I do agree with you on many things in this video, especially to say that eating no fat is the only way to clear the skin. As for me, I had terrible acne growing up and nothing ever seemed to work, even after I went vegan. This pilot study saved my skin and overall health. I did eat this way for the first few months until my acne cleared. I still do eat a balanced diet and include fats because they do encourage to add fats and other foods back into your diet to see test if it triggers your skin. (which you have forgot to mention in your video) and i did not see many changes in my skin. It still is clear. However, If I eat too much oil I of course will break out., I still stand strongly behind the teachings of this book by eating a starch based diet as these are anti-inflammatory foods, and do encourage people to try it out because it changed my skin forever. But of course, having some fat everyday won't do much harm and shouldn't be excluded from your diet

It took six months to heal and I’ve never had even a surface zit since (a year now) my last breakout. But I wouldn’t go and tell people to just start birth control. Acne is linked to hormones, stress, maybe diet.... so many reasons for so many different people. There is no single cure all.

  • @FrivolousGirl
    @FrivolousGirl Před 5 lety +1

I tried Nina & Randas diet and if anything, it made things worse. After further research, I’ve concluded that they’re some kind of abnormality. Most women’s acne is hormonal, meaning fat is essential. I was drawn to the low fat vegan movement because of my deep desire to cure my acne, 5 years later, after taking the help of another quackery, I find out that fats been the key this whole time. I wish I knew everything I know now sooner, would’ve probably spared me from a bunch of acne scars.
Why didn’t I try Accutane? Well, I have. 3 times. First two times the cystic acne came back within 2 years. Last time it barely got to six months. My dermatologist was like “this usually happens around this time, let’s try again” Most doctors won’t admit that the drug fails more than 1/10, until it actually fails you.
I’ve also been on antibiotics 4 times, caused me digestive problems (like not being able to digest fats) and even more aggressive type of acne because no doctor told me to take probiotics too.
I understand that it’s probably best to take Accutane as soon as possible. All three times my skin healed through with minimal scarring. But it also takes away your knowledge of what’s actually causing your acne and how to prevent it. If I had gone a fourth time, I would’ve probably never found the cure.
Today, after several modifications to my diet and supplements, I finally have somewhat of a clear skin with that occasional but not too horrible blemish during that time of the month. I’m fine with that. Better than having 3 pop up every day.
I will say this, it’s a miracle that I’m still vegan. Because if there’s anything vegans won’t foresee coming, is the low carb/paleo community stealing people from becoming vegan, as one of the most effective diets for hormonal acne is one high in fats, high doses of vitamin A from things like cod liver oil and butter, taking fish oil supplements, and statements like “your hormones needs cholesterol” and “45% of people can’t convert beta carotene into retinol” and so forth. I’m telling you, if there’s anything made to doubt veganism and steal people from us it’s this.
I’ve come across several cases of vegans having hormonal acne, searching for help, and ending up adding meat back into their diet. Not to mention several anemic vegans who instead of turning to a doctor and taking iron supplements gone back to eating meat. It’s so sad. Thank God I just don’t like meat and will do anything to avoid having to consume it.
PS For some reason I always get the most anti-vegan commercials on your videos. Like this time I get from a sausage company 😂

I followed their recommendations and I ate just carbs (and beans) in a desperate attempt to clear up my skin (I don't know if it was specifically cystic acne, but I had a lot of painful pimples, mostly on my cheeks). Guess what: the acne didn't disappear (it got worse), and I also got really dry skin and brittle nails. Not to mention I started bingeing because I was never satisfied despite eating huge portions.
I stayed vegan though, but it took a while to convince myself that fats aren't gonna make my acne flare up. Thanks God I did that- after incorporating pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds and avocados (I started eating them every day), my acne started healing. Now my skin is clear, I only get 1-2 pimples around my period.

No amount of moisturizer would help, I craved peanut butter all of the time, and never felt satisfied no matter how much food I consumed. Promoting a fat-phobic diet is SO dangerous to anyone and I'm so glad that I finally decided that it wasn't working for me. Now that I eat a balanced vegan diet I feel satisfied and my skin is amazing! I definitely think that it was the animal products (mostly dairy) that was making me break out, not the healthy vegan fats.

My boyfriend went vegan shortly after we began dating. He had suffered from SEVERE skin issues, described as both excema and seborrhoeic dermatitis his entire life. Prior to going vegan, he began by giving up dairy. He claimed a miracle, lol, for the first time in his life his skin was clear. He went vegan shortly after and has not suffered from the lifelong ailment for over 4 years now.
My lifelong friend had sudden acne and overall skin problems when she was about 32. Out of desperation, she eliminated dairy and after 6 weeks her skin was clear (after almost a year of suffering).

This is so frustrating for me too. I’ve dealt with bad acne my entire life. Bad “normal” acne on my face, cystic acne on my back, shoulders, and chest and I also have a chronic skin condition called hidradenitis suppurativa. I was a “health nut” from age 15 on, eating more healthy foods than anyone around me, and the ONLY thing that completely cleared all my acne was Accutane. I had to stop taking it because I believe there was a limit on how many times you could and I think it was also hard long-term on the liver or kidneys-can’t remember for sure. In college, I jumped on the super low fat vegan bandwagon and I did see an improvement in my acne. I also took an antibiotic briefly and was on birth control for some of the time. I also lost my period for a while (could have easily been other factors though, as dieting also triggers binge eating for me) and had to eat constantly to be satisfied. This is also the time when I developed my chronic skin condition. When I started a full-time job after college and had a lot of stress, I got breakouts again even though I was still eating my low fat vegan diet. A few years ago, I dropped all the crazy diets (staying an ethical vegan) and just focused on balance and enjoyment, emphasizing whole foods, and today my face is completely clear but my body acne is a toss up, sometimes really bad, sometimes okay, although very little cystic acne. Still have my chronic condition, but it’s very manageable despite scaring. And none of the traditional topical acne treatments ever worked for me. I tried so hard!
All this to say, acne is a super complex, frustrating and sometimes debilitating condition that is often a huge mystery. Someone claiming to have the cure-all answer is taking advantage of people who are desperate, whether they realize it or not, and that’s not okay.

An effective clear skin diet that you don't have to buy a book to understand: look up the recommended amount of sugar intake, generally do your best to only eat that amount. Because real life and sneaky added sugars are things you will fall short, but where you end up is better than where you were and in the process you will in all likelihood of get much clearer skin.
