    I was under the impression intermittent fasting is more about eating all your calories in a specific window, not necessarily less calories. When you say skipping meals that suggests eating less calories. So if your needs are 1,500 calories you are supposed to eat those within say an 8 hour window.

    • @emiliana1767
      @emiliana1767 Před 5 lety +16

      Well when you do daily intermittend fasting you are supposed to eat your daily calorie intake in the eating time window, yes. So if you dont eat breakfast, you are encouraged to have a bigger sized/more indulgend lunch or dinner for example. If you want to lose weight, that is not necessary of course. But if you do 2 fast days a week, you should eat normally 5 days, so not over your calorie limit, but still fast on 2 days with 0-500 calories. This will create an overall calorie deficit for the week and offer slow weightloss. That is what i have learned about it at least. In general weightloss is a welcomed side effect of IF and is suggested to be easier that way. But if you do not want to lose weight, you have to consciously watch your calories and probably increase them in your eating windows.

      That's exactly what Intermittent fasting is. I've been doing it for 6 months on a daily basis. I use the 16:8. I fast for at least 16 hours and eat between noon and 7pm. Sometimes I fast longer and eat only one meal. I've had great results and trained my body to eat when I tell it to eat. I also eat plant-based and avoid processed foods, foods with oils, sugars, and all the bad stuff. Obviously, no animal flesh whether the animal swims, flies, walks, crawls, etc. My blood work is off the charts. My doctor is speechless and I'm off all medications. In addition, I've lost 100 pounds between May 2018 and September 2018. This isn't something everyone is willing to do but it should be considered if you'd like to start getting healthy. The other part of this is changing the foods you eat. Here are a few suggestions to look up on CZcams. Search for "The Benefits of Intermittent Fasting", "Why Eating Meat is Bad for You", "Why Eating Dairy is Bad for You". Look for videos by Dr. McDougal, Dr. Klapper, Dr. Alan Goldhammer, and Dr. Michael Greger just to name a few. In summary, Intermittent Fasting along with eating plant-based foods, exercise, rest, controlling stress will have huge positive impacts on your health. This is sustainable. I was the biggest cheese eater, the biggest meat eater, the biggest junk food eater and very unhealthy. If I changed it around anyone can. You just need to be willing to. Many people will use "reasons" why they can't or why it didn't work for them. Don't expect immediate results. You didn't get overweight or sick from one day to the next. This happened gradually and over the years. One day at a time, stay positive and focused and you WILL see results.

      IsItHardToBeVegan? I’m not a doctor, but my best guess is yes. I have chronic stomach issues, and long term fasts would “shut down” my digestive system and give it a much needed break. It sounds like woo woo science, but it was genuinely my personal experience. I would go from being bedbound/unable to leave the toilet, to fully functioning on a fast. It is imperative however to eat properly before and after a fast. It is worthless to put in the effort, if you shock your system with large quantities of garbage foods after a long term fast. I always start and end a fast with eggs (easily digestible fat/protein). I eat vegan most the time, but I’ve found that breaking a fast with fruit is too much sugar for my system. On top of all of that, losing weight had also helped reduce my chronic digestive issues. Just my two cents.

    About 5-6 years ago (before I was vegan) I was doing IF alongside keto and I managed to lose around 30 pounds that I needed to drop. I think it was over a summer? As soon as I dropped the weight, though, I stopped. I definitely don't do keto anymore, it turned out that low carb was making me really dizzy and triggering a fainting disorder I later learned I had.
    That said, I'd still use IF again as a way to lose weight. I'm a volume eater, and I found that giving myself a relatively small window of time that I can eat daily makes it SO MUCH easier to stick to a deficit. Like, I'd eat a HUGE dinner and then a light snack before bed and that was it and it worked out well. I can definitely see how others would struggle with it, though.
    And as a bit of a request: I don't know if you've been asked this before, but I'm curious to know your thoughts on some of these meal replacements coming out lately (huel, soylent, etc.)?

Once I start eating I tend to snack thoughtlessly so shortening the time I can do that helps me control my weight (my body wants to be about 20lbs heavier than I currently am because I was at that weight for about a decade.) I think it is basically excess calorie control for me so it makes sense that it is effective.

    How to start IF in 4 easy steps.
    1) Stop eating.
    2) Don't eat for 16 hours. You can sleep or work out during this time. You can drink water, black coffee, and tea (black and green) during this time.
    3) Select an 8-hour window of time (e.g., noon to 8pm) to get all your eating done in. You can eat anything you want. Aim for healthy options. Sweets and junk food in moderation. Eat fewer calories than you burn. Schedule the 8 hours for a time that works best with your schedule. You may also work out in this time.
    4) Go back to Step 1.

    I think everyone should water fast for a day once in a while, so they learn hunger control. I hadn't done it for a while and it seemed impossible for me to only eat 3 meals a day. After a couple fasts, I could wait that long a lot better. I also lost extra weight during the fast. So between the two, I reached my goal of being bmi normal again. 3 meals a day is the best way to maintain my weight.

    Weight loss is far from the only reason to fast -- it is also an effective way to control insulin levels, and has really been helping with my digestive issues. Also, calorie restriction helps people lose weight, but it can long-term mess with metabolism, and it has very poor results when it comes to keeping the weight off. I try to eat during an eight-hour window most days, although I sometimes hit 10 (never much more than that though, I find I feel sick and my digestion is worse if I go over 12). Twenty-four-hour fasts are among the hardest to do because your ghrelin (hunger hormone) is still spiking at the times when you would normally eat -- that stops after day three of an extended fast, and then "hunger returns" when you actually need food again, although most people just choose to end the fast after 5-7 days whether they feel hungry or not. If your goal is weight loss then medically supervised (at least the first time) extended fasting is the most effective form of fasting.
    I highly recommend the book "The Complete Guide to Fasting": www.amazon.ca/Complete-Guide-Fasting-Intermittent-Alternate-Day/dp/1628600012/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1544142927&sr=8-1&keywords=the+complete+guide+to+fasting

      Your metabolism slows down as you lose weight because there's less of you anyway but having a slow/bad/"damaged" metabolism only means a difference of a like 200-400 calories than someone with a good metabolism so it's not exactly an all hope lost situation (Also no one is know to have actually gotten to the point of true metabolic damage (although it's thought to possible) but rather yo-yo dieting trains your metabolism to react quicker to having a lower food intake so you process food more efficiently while having a lower bmr etc)

    For obese mothers (and I mean merely obese, not morbidly obese) it's often recommended they maintain their weight throughout the pregnancy. Normal weight mothers are recommended to gain 11 - 16 kg, of which 9 kg are infrastructure like the baby, the womb, extra blood, extra body water, etc. This means that by maintaining their weight, obese pregnant women actually lose 9 kg of fat. This is also talked about in "Conquering Fat Logic" by Dr. Nadja Hermann. I had recommended that book to you in another comment.

      Miranda, I suggest gradually easing into it by first fasting daily for 12 hours and then extending that period. Cutting sugar (especially if you drink it, such as sodas as fruit juices), and cutting out snacks if you can, is also an idea -- they may be the reason you feel hungry as they fool the mind.
      I don't need to lose weight and basically fast for 14 hours a day and may extend that. I eat little sugar, don't snack, don't eat processed food, am vegan (with supplements), and exercise daily. At 69 I feel great -- no longer bloated, or going through sugar highs or lows.

I do not do it religiously because I am ideology-free, and when diet or a method becomes an ideology, it belongs in a trash can. I believe that technically any time that you fast for at least 12 hours out of 24 hours or more, it is a form of intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting is not a diet and does not tell you how many calories to eat, but when to eat. It is a method. Some people do eat within 24 hours and fast the next 24 hours. Some people say that what I am doing is not intermittent fasting but time-restricted feading.

    Since I was living on my own and got to structurize my day I was kind of doing IMF all along without knowing it. I tend to not be hungry in the morning but rather feel kind of sick if I think about food. So I don't eat until I get hungry. It's that simple. I end up usually eating in an 8 to 10 hour period every day, whilst not eating 14 to 16 hours every day. That just feels natural. If for any reason I would feel different, I'd just be eating differently. But the way it is right now, I don't struggle with it whatsoever - the opposite is true. I'd struggle to eat when I don't feel like it.
    And I like the fact that with a green tea instead of breakfast in the morning, I actually have so much more time on my hands.

    I'm doing intermittent fasting right now, to try and get back the control over my body, as I feel like I've kind of lost touch with this last year. I do it in the "eating window"-style, as in after the last thing I eat in the evening I can't eat again until 14-15 hours later. This works well for me because even before I wouldn't eat anything "real" until 11-noonish, but I'd snack like a crazy person. This keeps me from snacking after dinner, because I know that that would mean I can't eat until very late the next day, and it keeps me from snacking during the morning, which I did waaaay too much of. I feel like this has also helped me to not overeat so much at meals, because my stomach isn't as used to being so full all the time, so it can't handle the same amount of food. (I don't know if that's a real thing, but that's what it feels like.) Of course, I don't have any kids and I'm currently a student working on my thesis, so my schedule is very flexible. I don't know if I could really manage this with a 9-5 kind of life.

    I’ve been on and off with IF for several years since beginning high school, probably five-ish years or so. My go-to method of IF is the 16-hour fast, which I’m actually following right now. I make better choices if I plan out my meals and only eat whatever I have in my kitchen at my university apartment rather than in my parents’ kitchen or at a food science club meeting because I store less junk food and feel less inclined to eat spontaneously. I think it ultimately depends on what’s around in your environment and how you go about your day beyond the meal timing. Obviously you shouldn’t drag yourself to fast if you don’t want to and it really isn’t the superior way to eat as long as you’re in a calorie deficit and you enjoy what you do!

IF is a lifestyle, I started doing IF (one meal a day) in March of 2018 and I lost 30lbs by still eating all the foods I love, even the ones that are not so healthy. IF is a way to repair your body, your cells. I don’t deprive myself of anything and still lose weight or maintain the weight. If there’s a day or two like christmas or new years where I know there’s gonna be lots of food I love I eat whatever my heart desires and still my weight the next day is the same or if it goes up a pound or two it will go back down just as fast once I return to my regular lifestyle. But I get it, not everyone understands this concept of skipping breakfast and eating only lunch or dinner because it’s been drilled into everyone’s brain that we need to eat six meals a day in order to lose weight or be healthy. I mean, my poor body trying to burn those calories ALL day long.

      not weird at all! people just say its easier to skip breakfast because its the most common time people wake up for work/school. its really about what you want to do. i start my eating when i wake up as well because personally i can not eat late at night since i have binging issues. so cutting out that time for fasting works perfectly for me.

      do you boo, nothing wrong with it. it's a more traditionally recommended practice too, what with the "Breakfast Like a King, Dinner Like a Pauper" or "no meals after 5 pm" stuff being pretty generic things that I used to read/hear, so nothing actually "weird" either, by any means. I doubt it's actually better, but I can't see any reason why it would be worse.

    I did IF for almost 2 years and liked it. I didn't notice any weight loss (I wasn't trying to,) but I liked the convenience of only having to worry about food for a good portion of my day. I also liked the focus I had when I was in a fasted state. BUT I recently quit because I was having a hard time fitting in all of my calories (I'm away from home from 6am till 9pm every day so it was hard to just grab a snack if I needed more calories) and the large meals started to hurt my stomach. I would maybe consider trying it again, but it honestly got super annoying after awhile.

    I am doing IF but "following my gut" on it. If I wanna end it, I end it. If I wanna fast, I fast. I do anything from 20/4 to 12/12. I think having a menstrual cycle changes my needs throughout the month

    I think vegan, Keto. Intermittent fasting etc all can work as long as you eat healthy and eat less.
    I mean didn't Penn lose 100 pounds eating nothing but boiled potatos?🤣
    Whatever breaks that addiction to processed food.
    For ppl with anorexia... its a totally different thing. Fat people are not anorexic.

    I think the big payout from IF or limited time eating is that aside from usually skipping the breakfast you also don't eat after suppertime. So prime snacktime is excluded. A big bonus to whatever the body does differently when fasting for a period of time rather than just eating a bit less. Breakfast is possibly the least healthy meal of the day for a lot of people, since many common breakfast foods are semi-desserts.

    I am doing 16:8, but it doesn't work for me if I skip breakfast (then I always overeat during the eating window and I just love having breakfast like muesli or something). So I just take care that there are at least about 15 to 17 hours between dinner and breakfast (so mostly having dinner at 6 and breakfast at 10 so that I can have three meals a day and still do 16:8) and I am doing very well with this. I am not doing it for weight loss, but in order to sustain my weight because I love chocolate so much XD

    Skipping breakfast is one of the most common types of intermittent fasting, with a fasting window between yesterday's dinner and today's lunch. I think it's unusually easy where diets are concerned and definitely recommend Dr. Rhonda Patrick's take on this.

    With me it’s all or nothing. If I eat, I EAT. But when I fast, I fast for a about 20-22 hours and have one big meal from 6-8 pm and it’s a breeze.
    Benefits for me:
    I take my time and really actually enjoy my food, it’s a whole meditative experience now rather than me shoving handfuls of food down my throat here and there trying to lie to myself about how small the portions are so I can have more food;
    I literally don’t have to think or obsess over food all day. No, “what am I allowed have for breakfast that fits within my calorie intake/can I have that for lunch or do I need to eat something I don’t really enjoy simply because I can only consume a pre determined amount of calories/will I overeat if I buy this” type of mind fucking, life fucking thoughts. The mental gymnastics are gone with IF;
    I can finally be in control of my calorie intake (I stick to about 1600-1700 a day as I have a lot to lose and I’m not the most active person) because there’s no way I can overeat within this 2 our time frame unless I really want to make myself sick;
    I can indulge without guilt - I try to stick to nutrient dense foods but if I want a vegan pizza I have one and I don’t hate myself for it;
    I drink so much more water now because for 20 hours that’s all that’s allowed entry (I’m kidding re: “allowed” if I’m feeling like I absolutely need food before my window, I’ll honor that without question but I haven’t felt any need to do so yet;
    I have a ton of extra energy during the day assuming it’s because my body isn’t spending all that time digesting food so I’ve got some extra fuel to burn, it’s amazing;
    I don’t wake up every morning hating myself for fucking up the day before;
    I’m losing weight at a healthy pace and it’s effortless compared to the years of so much goddamn struggle;
    For me, IF is the key to a healthy life and a healthy relationship with food.

    IF isn't a diet, it is an eating protocol or structure. You can eat however, or whatever you want but it just has to be within a certain window; at least with true IF.

I know that sounds crazy but it somehow works for me. I don't really feel tempted to munch their food either- it helps knowing "I can make this again if I want to eat this during my window. I'm not short on food." And I agree- kids have NO cold filter 🙄😂 Informative video- great share!

    It sounds so shitty to have to abide by these restrictive diets...I’m really thankful I was able to drop 65lbs a few years ago in my very early 20s by what seemed to be some random occurrence (still unsure how it happened, tbh). I’ve maintained my current weight of 150-155lbs for the last few years and with my 5ft 11in frame I look and feel damn good. I recently weighed myself out of curiosity, as I no longer obsess over my weight, and I saw that I had dipped to the 140s. I’m with you in the “found what works for me” camp because I pretty much eat what I want...I’m just mindful and try to maintain a rational balance of carbs/fats/proteins. I don’t consume much added sugar daily nor do I snack on junk food regularly. I eat at home mostly and that’s really it. I dunno. Shit is simple now.

    4:45 Sarah Johnson is wrong. Regardless of whether lactic acid is predominantly in the form of lactic acid or lactate, the generation of lactate tends to acidify the medium since the pKa of lactic acid (pKa1 = 3.86 in physiological conditions) is much lower than the pKa of its substrate glucose/glycogen (pKa ≈ 12) (i.e., at any pH within physiological range there's a greater proportion of dissociated lactate relative to total lactic acid than deprotonated glucose relative to glucose). That's why the yogurt ferments turn milk (or whatever substrate you give them to ferment) into a more acidic product. The sugars (e.g., lactose) are taken from the medium to become substrates for glycolysis, and the resulting pyruvate + H+/pyruvic acid is turned into lactate + H+/lactic acid and pumped out of the cell:
    Glc + 2 ADP + 2 Pi ⟶ 2 HLac + 2 ATP + 2 H20 (glucose fermentation)
    2 ATP + 2 H2O ⟶ 2 ADP + 2 Pi (muscle contraction)
    2 HLac ⇋ 2 Lac- + 2 H+ (medium acidification)
    There isn't that much ATP stored in the muscles. After a couple of seconds or less, the consumption of ATP + Creatine-P will be compensated by the net synthesis of ATP from glycolysis. Otherwise, you'd run out of ATP + Creatine-P. Once the stationary state is reached, the primary source of acidifying products is the buildup of lactate (in anaerobic conditions, without the generation of lactate you would run out of NAD+ so glycolysis couldn't proceed any longer).
    Glc + 2 NAD+ + 2 ADP + 2 Pi ⟶ 2 Pyr- + 2 H+ + 2 NADH + 2 H+ + 2 ATP + 2 H2O
    2 Pyr- + 2 NADH + 2 H+ ⟶ 2 Lac- + 2 NAD+ (in the muscle)
    A different story is whether the burning sensation that you feel in your muscles is the result of the acidification of the muscles, and whether other processes may be also contributing to muscle acidification.

    I lost 9 kg in couple months last spring with IF, trying to get to my optimal weight after starting to gain weight terrifyingly fast (I've been overweight as a teen and I fear the day I'll hit the same numbers) got there, super happy about it, but... I found it kinda unnecessary after I lost the weight.
    The reason why I lost the weight I think is because it made eating less of a thing. Not having to think food on every single meal makes counting and planning calories so much easier... and not having to try "everything in moderation", which I totally suck at. So by cutting meals down to one meal and some snacks, I was able to eat meals that satisfied me psychologically and didn't leave me hungry at night.
    Edit: just to clarify, I was doing the 18-20h fasting schedule every day, and cutting my calories to ~1600kcal/day, so not starving at all, I found it to be enough with a small eating window. I started struggling getting 2000kcal in with the small window after I reached my goal, because I would feel like throwing up from eating too much too quickly or then I would start eating like a half of an Oreo pack :D so I quit.

    From what I've heard, a lot of the research about fasting doesn't sufficiently note differences between women and men. Menstruating women, especially those who are active, often need to eat more regularly to maintain hormone balance. I learnt this the hard way after losing my period for a while (I went too long between meals, didn't refuel enough after working out, and ate too little overall). In my opinion, women should take greater care when approaching fasting. Having said that, I think that the 16:8 system is probably fine, although I suspect it's not going to cause any dramatic improvement in health.
