- The Labour Party may be thankful that, despite having to suspend two candidates over alleged anti-semitism, two emphatic overnight by-election victories mean they've ended the week with a pair of new MPs.

In Kingswood in south Gloucestershire, where the Conservatives were defending a majority of over 11,000, Labour won with a swing of over 16%.
And in the Northamptonshire seat of Wellingborough, Labour overturned a Conservative majority of over 18,000. The swing of over 28% was the second-highest Conservative-to-Labour swing in any by-election since World War Two.

I am from Wellingborough and I was surprised when I went to vote there was 11 parties on the ballot paper, the only parties that made the effort to campaign and really advertise, from what I saw, were Labour and in the upcoming week Reform. Peter Bone’s partner as candidate was probably not the best move for the Tories and again they did not campaign, comes across as maybe they gave up? Plus the reason for Peter Bone’s departure did them no favours, people of Wellingborough clearly had enough and voted change myself included.
"change"? For the worse. Well done.
@@jrobs1133 well the Tories and Peter Bone clearly did such a bad job not many people wanted them to stay and felt a change of party. The Labour Party is what the people voted for. Guess wait and see what happens...

I'm loving the right wing coping mechanisms on display here. The swing was record breaking. Wellingborough has one of the most "ardent brexiteers" in parliament. Reform have their own TV channel. The turnout was completely normal for a byelection, not low. There is no way in which this wasn't a good day for Labour, a bad day for the Tories, and a failure for Reform.
Labour got fewer votes than they did in 2017, and only 100 or so more than they did in 2019. Hardly a resounding victory.

I'm an American who likes to observe UK politics. Correct me if I'm wrong but if the Conservatives spend too much time, trying to appeal to the reform UK vote they risk losing moderate voters in marginal seats to Labour or Lib Dems. And there are those who will vote tactically just to get the Tories out correct?"
Tories definitely are doing that and have been doing that for a while. Those on the right of the tories want basically near enough far right policies to appease the would be Reform voters, the more moderate tories saying, you move that way and voters won't like like it, it's time to go back to being "one nation" conservatives. Clearly it's looking too late now, general election this year, they've left it too long to tell the public what they're about. And yes, the public will be voting tactically, you're right. I will be doing the same, holding my nose and voting for who can keep the tories out.
Correct, indeed. However, given the increasingly right-wing state and direction of the Conservative Party over the past 5-7 years, it’s fair to say that they’ve already alienated a large proportion of their moderate voters to the point of no return (in the near future that is). Targeting those groups now is both an action that would be too late and increasingly fruitless. They’ve really put themselves in a bind.
The Tories know they're finished. A turf war with Reform is all they have left. If they lose it, it'll split their voter base & make coming back that much harder.
You're right. Uk elections are won in the centre ground, and the Tories are giving it up.
@@keeleyruane69 The drop in Conservative support is precisely because they aren't 'right wing'.

As a labour party member I'm really chuffed at the way the by-elactions went for all concerned and long may it last. A bit of a blot on the celebrations was a Muslim in my area saying that the Muslims now control labours future. He recons that there's that many Muslims now living in Britain, that their vote by sheer numbers could put us or the tories back in office at the coming election. He said labours party is a gateway for Muslims to enter parliament and as proof you only have to look at the amount of Muslim Labour Party ministers to the tory Muslim numbers. The tory Muslims are afraid of the tory right and that's why the numbers are low in that party. So if this is true the Muslim activists better watch their back because the far right reform party could become a 'get out of jail' alternative for the British people.
