Hylda had very sad demise. She always dreaded having dementia like her father. Eventually she ended up in a care home, without any recollection of who she was, even when watching herself on tv. When she died it practically went unnoticed in the press with only a handful of mourners. She was cremated in London and her ashes were scattered in the same place as her family in the North. A brilliant actress...

I'm SAT SITTIN' here with my shoulders shaking with laughter @ the glorious memories and FILTHY double entendres .I was only around nine or ten when this was going out in early-mid seventies but I knew DAMN WELL what was being said and what was being MEANT.The audience howling out, my parents sniggering because they KNEW but thaught I didn't, and me sniggering at the back of the room coz I knew they thaught I didn't know!.

When her friend says has he and rolls her eyes just look at Hyldas expressions and way she says what she says now that is pure comedic genius, loved her mix up of words which probably came from her or it could be the script. But so so funny the way she does them.

Nellie was classic telly, and Baker was a gorgeous shambling wreck of a comic genius. I loved her gentle digs at Walter, and her assaults on the English language are priceless. Her life story is surely ripe for a biopic, and I think Dawn French would be perfect to play Hilda because in Dibley I see a lot of Baker-like mannerisms in Dawn. Thumbs up also to the long suffering Madge Hindle who, like Pat Coombs, is one of Britains great unsung comedic actresses.

Its a fact that many of Hilda Bakers more successful comedic affectations were copied directly from the work of a predecessor, fellow Lancastrian Jill Summers. Although very successful, Jill did most of her work on stage long before TV took off (although she later appeared in Coronation Street as Phyllis Pearce) so many TV viewers were never aware of the similarities. There is a clip of Jill reviving part of her stage act in Wood & Walters in 1982.

Just been reading Barry Cryer's book of anecdotes and he says Hylda and Jimmy Jewel positively loathed each other and were very difficult to work with as a duo. Hylda often forgot her lines, and to cover she used her "Ohh you big girl's blouse" catchphrase. Once this happened on stage and Jewel turned to the audience and said: "I'm not going to help her"!

+Michael Woodhead - Yes, I have Barry's biography as well, I think it steamed from the fact that Hilda got a lot more money than Jimmy for their TV shows cos she wrote the songs and contributed a lot to the script.

Such a great shame they couldn't appreciate each other's contribution as the show was - and is - marvellously funny.
