  • Hey guys! This video is all about helping you guys get into understanding BVR engagements and what your mindset should be, where your eyes should be in the cockpit, how you should be using your Radar and Data-link and what you should be looking for outside of the jet.
    This BVR engagement is broken down into steps where I periodically pause the engagement and explain what is going on and what my next move will be.

      @National Christian Constitutionalist Party I did some math on it. Two aircraft roughly at co-altitude, 100 nm apart, will appear to be about 2 degrees below their respective artificial horizon lines in the HUD. The maximum line of sight visibility range for two aircraft at 35-40 k feet is around 400 nm, with the physical horizon appearing roughly 5 degrees below the artificial horizon line in the HUD. A 1 bar scan ought to cover about 5 degrees of elevation (2.5 above and 2.5 below straight and level,) 2 bars would cover about 7.5 degrees and a four bar scan would cover 12.5 degrees worth of elevation, so the required depression angle for the radar should be fairly slight.

    He's using the wrong terminology when he says he's 'beaming' her- He's 'cranking' her which is putting enemy on your gimbal limit. Beaming is putting the enemies or incoming missile radar on your 3 or 9 oclock. You can't beam in this situation because your missiles are slaving to your radar and they'll lose lock. The F-16C's radar sweeps only 60 degrees left or right and beaming requires that you fly 90 degrees from the enemy radar. Beaming is to hide in the doppler clutter notch so enemy missile can't lock or loses lock. Cranking is forcing a missile to fly a much longer intercept path so you can maintain your lock on the enemy but the enemy radar/missile will still track you.

    • @EbonySeraphim
      @EbonySeraphim Před rokem +3

      Growling Sidewinder does a better job in explaining some of this stuff in a more complete and context relevant sort of way. What is sort of egregiously missing about this guide is a slightly more in-depth the behavior of the AIM-120C and what "pitbull" means. Most people casually know the AIM-120C is "fire and forget" relative to the AIM-7. This isn't completely true however, as the AIM-120C still needs to be guided by the launch aircraft a certain distance before it will guide itself to a target. I'm sure this is a part of BVR strategy because it helps you decide when/if you can beam versus crank. I know Spudknocker knows because he said something in this video related to it, but didn't explain it at all.
      Also notably missing is what speed and altitude you might want to be at for the start of an engagement and why; how your radar should be set up before an engagement and why; how you should be operating your radar and adjusting it to get appropriate updates; what visual cues you might use to spot an incoming missile or aircraft as you close.
      What was good and I haven't seen in other videos was an offering of the idea of how to know when you've defeated an enemy missile and can stop defending. It was a bit weak though as no one can use an F10 map during their own engagement. If you used F10 after the fact, it's too late so you kind of need to know what them missile state based on your SA of the launching aircraft and the path and distance you forced the missile to take. If you're going to review a dogfight that has already occurred, Tacview is the tool of choice.

      Yeah that bothered me a lot. He says he is beaming on his first crank, then says he is cranking when he turns it into an f-pole maneuver, and then he says he is doing an f-pole when going cold. Its like he knows but is all scrambled. Maybe its a scripting issue?

    G'day Spud, I like your tutorial, cristall clear with those pauses and how to do Fox 3 BVR mode. Anyway, I would like a Fox 1 againist Fox 3 BVR engagement, so at least some of the DCS player and myself has another tool of engagement and can rely on other missile like Sparrow to actually kill a SPAMRAAMer. I would like to see this tutorial, considered so many online players do a SPAMRAAM things in 104th or GS server. This tutorial also can help a reenactor playing a downgraded Viper arm with Sparrow only engage another Viper arm with Amraam. That will be cool thing to see Spud!

      Sparrow vs AMRAAM is all about numerical superiority, mutual support, and bracket/pincer/drag n bag tactics, which allows you to get unobserved entries on bandits beam/stern quadrant. Without those your only option is to force a merge via notching, which is somewhat risky. Obviously this is simplified but its the basics.

    Good tutorial. I noticed you left the F-15 Eagle out of the discussion about Radar effectiveness? I have a couple of questions: Where is the indication of when the AMRAM will turn it's radar on? On the F/A-18 there is a loft mode. You however state that missile will know that it is going to have to go into this mode based on what it is being told by the A/C. I don't understand why one fighter is different than the other with regards to the employment of the missile? You also used the term relative motion of the incoming missile...so in other words if the missile has none you are still in danger? When you do have relative motion and the missile is drawing behind the plane you are safe or likely safe? Thanks again - my son has gotten me into DCS world and I have got the A-10IIC and F/A-18 familiarized and wanted to start the F-16.

      That means it's is moving in relation to your canopy. In other words, it's no longer heading for an intercept point.
      If you think of two ships in the ocean, both making speed (doesn't matter how much, or if they are the same). If the bearing from one ship to the other is constant, the ships will collide with each other. If the bearing changes however, the ships will not collide. Defeating a missile is the same thing, but in 3D. If the bearing changes, the relative position does (they mean the same thing).

    Good explanations my dear ... thanks for the video! but i would like to ask you a few questions, considering that you made an explanatory video without actually being in a real multiplayer combat: is it normal to lose sight of the target on the radar numerous times? it is irritating to navigate miles and miles trying to regain the target "in bugged" while many times an F-18 with a better radar can guarantee much better target locking, and consequently, better chances of firing at the right times ... I see you being able to lock your target in a 120 mile configuration on TWS while most of the time, considering ALL the correct procedures, I can't lock the target around 40 ~ 50 miles where we would have a better range with the A120C ... I'm playing from Brazil on servers with 20 ~ 30 players keeping 180ping ... so could my ping be making it difficult to lock the target on the radar? or am I missing something in some procedure? can you clarify this better? Please, someone help me...

    So I know the AIM-120 is a Fire and Forget missile. I always thought, you fire the missile and can break off to not shorten the distance to your enemy. (Hope I made myself clear.) But I see you guys almost always use your own radar to illuminate your targets before the missile goes active. So for radars: I assume the one in the F-16's nose is better than the one of the AIM-120? Sound pretty dangerous fighting like you use Sparrow rockets, right? And in regards to the F-16's radar: Is it really so bad? I never thought about that. Yea, the Hornet is more modern than the Viper, but doesn't it get its radar updated? Or isn't that possible because of the airframe/form of the plane or such things? Or does that have to do with the High/Low theme of the Air Force? So F-15 better than F-16 even if F-16 is more modern? Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hope one can help an enthusiastic Fan. And great video. Hope you get Cortana a cold dring of her choice for letting herself getting blown up in order for you to teach us BVR. :)

      Hey mate, I am only new to DCS but I believe the reason people fire and stay nose hot with radar lock is because it prevents the missile from emitting a signal that can be picked up by the enemy's RWR. If you stay locked, I believe they only get that signal when the missile goes pitbull

    • @rickwalker2
      @rickwalker2 Před 3 lety +1

      @@gnittegdellort it depends on the mode your radar is in as to whether the target will get a missile launch RWR warning before the missile goes pitbull. If you hard lock (STT or ACM modes) the target will get an RWR warning as soon as the AMRAAM comes off the rails, but in TWS or SAM modes you only soft lock so the RWR will only go off once the missile goes pitbull (using it’s own radar to hard lock). The AMRAAM will always go pitbull when the target is within range so the target will get an RWR warning when this happens, irrelevant of what you do beforehand,
      In an ideal world you want to maintain soft lock until the missile goes pitbull then break away. This is because the AMRAAM can’t track the target until pitbull so needs guidance from it’s launch platform until this point to give the maximum probability of a kill. If you drop the lock before pitbull then the AMRAAM should fly to the targets anticipated intercept path and try to reacquire it when it goes pitbull. However it’s important to remember that if this happens the missile won’t necessarily reacquire lock on the intended target as, when unguided, it’s indiscriminate and will lock onto the nearest thing flying around the intercept point (including friendlies). Allowing the AMRAAM to fly without guidance also means that if the target makes any course corrections the chances are the missile will miss.

    Nice video! I see one crucial tactical mistake being made here. By not doing preventive defensive cranking during pre-launch (from about 60 NM) you are setting yourself up to be hit by a long-range missile while head-on supersonic at a very high altitude. You should be cranking long before you take your first shot - it's a simple way to defeat the enemy's first long-range shot, even if it was shot way before your first shot. This, of course, is assuming no other factors are at play - for example doing escort or protecting a certain airspace aggressively. Only when you need to control/distract the enemy would you want to go head-on within 60 NM at high altitude.

      Use Tacview if you can - I expect you'll find that they're cranking immediately upon firing, and respecting MAR. For example, at 20k ft. in an F/A-18 vs a MiG-29, you'd start to climb as you approach ~35nm, fire a fox-3 (while the MiG still can't do anything to you!) out at ~30nm, immediately crank to 60-65 degrees, holding Mach ~0.8 (remember to dip your wing in towards him as you reach 65 degrees or so, so that you keep him right on the edge of your radar scope as you close in!), turn in another 20 degrees or so towards the Hostile at ~15nm, fire a second fox-3, and go back to your crank - hold your crank until EITHER your 2nd fox-3 goes pitbull OR you're about to reach 8nm (which is approximately your MAR), whichever happens first, then put (and keep) the Hostile on your 6, dive, and burn away. Remember, ~0.8M. Hold it. Don't bleed off energy below that speed in this circumstance.
      Executed correctly, you should be essentially invulnerable. You will not be guaranteed the kill, but it should be a very high probability, particularly on the 2nd missile. The first missile is to force the Hostile to go defensive, or at least to limit their options - if they don't, they get a free warhead delivered straight to their forehead.
      The above is what's called a "timeline", specifically a "skate" engagement profile, and every possible matchup has one. They depend on the capabilities aircraft and particularly of the missiles involved. You won't always (or even usually) have a timeline that will make you "essentially inuvlnerable", but learning them is how you consistently win BVR fights.
      If you want to learn more about this topic, start looking into BVR timelines, "skate", and "banzai". Note that a banzai engagement profile is (and should be) quite uncommon, because frankly, you don't want to go in to the merge if you can avoid it!
      One last protip: if you ever find yourself "off timeline", just turn around and gtfo. The #1 reason people die in DCS is because they get greedy and don't disengage when they should. Remember, you can always re-engage, so there's no reason to force an engagement once your timeline is thrown off. Turn around and set up again. As a "defender", your entire goal in BVR is to throw the other guy off his timeline; that's your win condition. Don't give them their win condition for free :)

    You say that you fired 2 initially because your hope is that the first will bleed her energy to the point where the second one hits - but where’s the logic in that?
    She isn’t going to make herself slow to defend an AMRAAM, she ought to be diving at extremely high speed and pulling hard cranks, there is no bleeding of target energy, the target is only bleeding the missile’s energy.
    It’s fair to assume the first missile won’t hit the mark in any BVR engagement, but firing the second so soon after under the same conditions just seems like a waste, her defensive manoeuvres for the first will probably just defeat the second as well - look how effortlessly you defeated hers, and how much speed you were carrying.
    Your practical application in the defensive seems sound but your theory on the offensive conflicts with what else I’ve read.
