  • Hey guys, this video is a recording of a 1 on 1 Training Session I did with one of my Patrons. In the Lesson we went over the basics of BFM or Basic Fighter Maneuvers in the DCS F-16C Viper within the confines of DCS World. Specifically I like to go over all of the little gotchas that new DCS Pilots struggle with in a fly by wire aircraft like the F-16C!

    Thanks for the vid, I learnt a lot!
    Trying to write this stuff down for others.
    LEAD, PURE & LAG PURSUIT
    Lead pursuit - nose ahead of the target
    Pros
    Highest closure even with inferior speed
    Cons
    -danger of collision
    -may lose sight if falls beneath the nose
    -as a lead pursuit turn increase in rate and reduces in radius it may exceed the attacker’s capabilities
    Pure pursuit - nose on the target
    Pros
    -also provides closure on the defender
    -does not cause AOT Angle off Targets Tail to increase as rapidly as Lead pursuit
    -provides the minimum frontal area to the target aircraft, increasing the defenders visual problems
    Cons
    -eventually increases in rate of turn and reduction in radius may exceed the attackers capabilities.
    Lag pursuit - nose behind the target
    Pros
    -good for slowing or stopping closure
    -good for relaxing g load increasing energy and accelerating
    -good for establishing position in the rear hemisphere against a slower moving target
    -good for establishing a position, where once the attacker has approached they can initiative a harder turn towards the target and establish a stable position behind the bogey and outside his turn to see his underside in what is termed a “cold-side” lag
    -difficult for the defender to maintain sight, especially if the attacker is cold side or ar the defenders six
    Cons
    -the attacker is predictable and thus vulnerable to a second fighter if performing a prolonged lag pursuit
    -sustained lag pursuit is very taxing, if the attackers higher speed requires them to hold a higher g load
    Defense
    -defense against hot side lag pursuit is to tighten the turn, including using gravity assist nose low.
    -defense against cold side lag pursuit is turn reversal. This can be more effective when performed nose high, causing a reduction in defenders forward velocity and increasing closure.
    -a nose high turn reversal can be effective against missile only fighters, as it may bring the attacker quickly past min missile launch range
    a nose high reversal against a gun equipped fighter will nearly always result in a snapshot opportunity for the attacker.
    Thanks again for a great vid. I’ve got about 60 hours on DCS mainly in the F86 and F14.

    I'd call this a master class for sure. While I might never fly DCS myself, I've still learned a tonne from this insightful video. Makes it a lot easier to follow what the pros are doing, when I watch DCS videos. Or just to have a better understanding of dogfight principles in general. Much appreciated and entertaining as well.

      @Spudknocker  Před 2 lety +8

      There are far more academic resources you can find on dogfighting down to the smallest aerodynamic details. But this was enough to get the student up and running to learn on his own there there.

    Love this vid. I went to the RAAF (Australia) at 15 to enlist, passed the aptitude and fitness tests with flying colours, was just about to become a fighter pilot, then found out I was "colourblind". So, naturally, I'm very keen to get into DCS. I have a Saitek X52 HOTAS and today I picked up my TrackIR. Keen to fly the F-16, I got the 2 week trial. The training modules are good, but some of the things they tell you to look at on the HUD, MFD's etc are really not clear for a rookie, hence I stumbled upon this vid. Technically didn't answer the things I was looking for, but I ended up watching til the end cause it was still some really amazing education on actual BFM and dogfighting. Keep up the great work!

      @tomriley5790 Před rokem +1

      Just to make a suggestion - i know it's unfashioned but in the module there's a directory "docs" which includes the F16 manual to read - it will explain everything (it's long and complicated but well... welcome to DCS)

      One thing I am finding tricky is improving BFM / ACM. Any tips on how to setup single player for that? I've created a custom mission with a single fighter 10nm away from my position which seems to work okay but open to any pro tips!

    The ARI provides coordinated rudder commands and reduces sideslip during rolling maneuvers. Additional pilot rudder commands do not improve roll performance but do increase departure susceptibility.

    The best explanation I got of pure pursuit is Nose to tail, lead pursuit nose to nose, or trying to cut off your opponent. Another explanation was thinking of when you are in a car and going fast the car wants to slide out of the turn. So you have to control that speed to maintain the control you require so you don't slide.

    It's extremely challenging to do in game, especially non-VR via a 2D screen. Curious where your trainee is in terms of experiences, as it looks you were doing a modified "tail chase" exercise initially and if you do off-set stuff, like a butterfly set Mover and Gonky demonstrated earlier this year. All the F-16 pilots probably noted your excess high negative-G move there...;P. It's all good fun.

    Does anyone know of a video that describes each mission type? In the editor there's a dropdown box with mission names like CAS, CAP, INTERCEPT, RECONASANCE, SHIP STRIKE, etc. Because changing the mission type changes a lot of other things like what loadout is available, what aircraft are available and how the AI will treat the bad guys. It's just confusing AF at first. Any help would be appreciated.

    I have a lot of trouble finding targets visually in the air with labels turned off. I usually leave the red/blue mark labels on without the text to aid me but I'm still struggling. Does playing from a 17 inch laptop screen give a massive disadvantage or does it just take practice?

    • @Spudknocker
      @Spudknocker  Před 2 lety +4

      Hey man, you probably need a bigger screen and head tracking like TrackIR. It also just takes practice and a lot of anticipation of where an aircraft is going to be based off of your sensors, your intuition and training.
      Biggest thing is don’t look for a jet, focus on a piece of sky, a cloud, or a spot on the ground and look for movement. When you see movement lock your eyes onto it and that’s your jet you’re looking for

    • @bazsawow
      @bazsawow Před 2 lety +1

      @@Spudknocker Thanks Spud, very helpful! I'm using a head tracker, but anticipation sounds like the key. I suppose better situational awareness will come with experience and a ton of practice.

    Here's something I don't understand, why don't teach basic flying skills first. Even Growling Sidewinder made the same mistake on his F14 vs F15 video that was critiqued by a flying trainee as a seemingly easy to recover from stall maneuver, or something to avoid. I get the idea that DCS players are learning to fly through dogfighting rather than the other way around.
