  • So, today we are out and about walking in Cirencester again! This time in the old grounds of Cirencester Abbey.
It is fair to say that this walk is somewhat experimental in the sense that it combines two walks into one, which I have to say is something I personally have never seen before here on CZcams! Also, this is the first time I have uploaded a film that is entirely in black & white. I think for night time walks converting colour to black & white works well but I'm sure this will be very subjective. The two walks were actually filmed many months apart. I have tried my best to line the two walks up so that they connect smoothly between cuts.
Would you like to see more night walks in monochrome? I would very much like to hear your thoughts and feedback.
The Augustine Abbey of St Mary in Cirencester was founded in 1117 and was demolished in the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539.
There are no hidden OAAW logos in this video.
For a more immersive experience please use headphones or earbuds. Keep a listen out for what sounds like an owl.
Both walks were started just before 11 pm.
Mid Roll Ads have been disabled for this video!
Thanks for walking with me and being here.

I liked that the rain faded in and out between the two cuts. That may be because I have a soft spot for walking in the rain perhaps. Regardless the black and white aesthetic is also something I have a soft spot for. There's nothing quite like walking at night, with a light drizzle of rain and with a lack of other people to just allow your mind to quiet itself.
I like the video and I wouldn't be averse to watching more videos keyed in monochrome.

Hello. Good to hear from you. Hope you are doing well. Thanks very much for your feedback. It appears we share a similar interest in rain walks at night as well as the B&W aesthetic :) It is such a different vibe compared to daytime and like you say it allows for the mind to quiet itself.

@@OutandaboutWalking Yeah, night walking is the best. Little to no traffic, people or noise. That and the fact you can smell things such as plants and trees a lot easier than you would during the busier daytime especially when the air is still. It all adds up to a very different experience than walking in the daytime.
I seem to have quite a few videos of yours to watch now. I guess my Sunday just got a little more pleasant and enjoyable.

Very interesting. Easy for me to watch as to this day I favor the old black & white movies and TV shows; I guess because the noise of colors are missing? (more likely because they're so 🌽y) This transitioning gives me an idea: a four season video, maybe of the ancient woods or somewhere where the seasons are in stark contrast with each other. Why am I up so early on a Sunday? It's been raining, lightning, thundering, winding since Thursday... 13" rain according to rain gauge on river bridge just up the road, she's also 2 football fields over banks saying howdy inside homes of "let's build so we can fish off front porch" (there needs to be 5' more rain to howdy us aka 13" 4 more times).... I'll watch this again later with sound on, didn't want to wake the household & was enjoying a singalong outside me window of acouple "who, who cooks for you" owls who eventually began squabbling which sounds like a tree full of raging monkeys..... Imagine a 1100AD abbey removed 400+ years later and those living ±1,200 yrs after her construction not only knowing she existed but preserves her grounds. THAT'S Cotswolders! All power to ya! And to you Sir🕶️ for historically filming and launching the video world wide. You're the best.

Good day, L.J. Thank you for your comment. Just for a second there I thought you were up early because you couldn’t contain the joy & excitement from receiving a ‘OAAW’ notification on a Sunday :). WOW! That is so much 🌧️! I did not realise that you live so close(ish) to a river. I do hope residents are not too adversely effected by the advances of rising water levels. I must admit I do enjoy a thunderstorm, even though potentially they can cause so many major problems & disruption, I am always in awe by the sheer power of Mother Nature.
A seasonal compilation does sound like a good idea…the ancient woodland would indeed make a good candidate for the film and we have already got a couple of seasons bagged!
It’s funny isn’t it…films like this will barely get any views but when comparing the likes to views count they outperform the popular‘Chocolate Box’ walks…strange! But you know me, I like to mix it up and film what I like to film.
Stay safe out there! All the best to you.

As someone who likes to create monochrome drawings ans paintings, i have to say I love this! The way the light shines through the treebranches, making them look ghostly, as if at any moment they will move towards you and try to grab you! The raindrops like sparkling diamonds on the ground. I also love how the texture in the street creates shadows in a variety of shades of grey and black, especially in the rain. For me personally, the rain actually adds to the atmosphere, making it more dark and nostalgic. And then to make it perfect, the tawny owl and its spooky call. 🦉
Needles to say, I would love to see more monochrome videos. I love this. 🙂

@@OutandaboutWalking I will definitely freeze frame that tree with the moonlight shining through and sketch it. I like using black paper for monochrome drawing, cause in a way you`re half way there already. It`s not as easy as it might seem though, getting all the shadows right and the light coming through. But I love the dramatic look of it. Having a reference photo (or video) does help a lot.

I found the black and white imagery to be very effective, and evocative. Very film noir, which had me picturing people in trench coats and fedoras lurking in the shadows, but also poetic, as with the blurry moon through the bare branches, recalling Ivor Gurney's poem, Old Martinmas Eve. You're the artist, you'll know when it's appropriate to further explore this technique.

As this walk was a shorter one, I had the pleasure of watching it all in one sitting- and I used my earbuds. (What a difference that makes; at the end, I felt as if the water was flowing through our house!). I liked the monochrome very much for this type of walk, as colors don’t show up too well at night, anyway. I think this type of film creates a greater contrast, more clarity, and a more dramatic effect. (The moon at the top of the bare tree was a stunning shot!). I also feel that when filming old places- old buildings, old grounds, etc.- the black and white format adds to the antiquity, and represents the places more truly. I am not a huge movie watcher, but when I have watched a period piece that was originally filmed in black/white- particularly if the subject is of a more serious nature- I generally do not care to see it get colorized.
It must be very interesting for you to try different techniques and various ways of filming, in addition to varying where and when you take your viewers on walks! Photography is definitely artistry, but the tool is your camera rather than paintbrushes or pencils. Thank you for sharing this latest bit of your artistry with us! :)

Hi Janet. Good to hear from you today. The idea 💡 that I mentioned the other day (inspired by your comment) was actually for this video…to turn it into B&W. Earbuds to do make all the difference to the listening experience on these walks as 99% of them are recorded with binaural microphones. Monochrome does seem to work well for nighttime olde-worlde type walks, creates a unique atmosphere :). I don’t think I have watched a film in years, same for TV, anything I watch tends to be on CZcams :)

I watch things almost exclusively on CZcams, too- as I can select what appeals to me and watch it when convenient. The B/W movie I was thinking of (which I have on a DVD) is the 1951 British version of Scrooge- which in my opinion (others may differ) is the absolute best version of Charles Dickens’ Christmas classic. I only watch this version, and I only watch the B/W option on our DVD; it just looks more real, and like the time period in which it was written.

This was fun! Nicely done. Shades of It’s a Wonderful Life or a film noir classic… that was classic for the art of the photography as much as for the art of the story. Interesting. 👏🏻
My dad was a commercial photographer who got me into b&w and b&w infrared. I used to do diptychs of a scene using both versions of photography. So fun. And so enlightening - we get into grooves of how we experience life that can be rather limiting.

Yeah…. My dad was a great teacher - passion and a huge desire to share with people. He saw life through his lenses in a lot of ways. I got out of it because I did not like digital. I much preferred analog. Reporting suggests the technology is better, more sophisticated, and getting closer back to nuances of analog (sometimes “new” is just “new,” not necessarily “better”) so who knows.

Hey OAAW~ I am disappointed: I did not get notification of this comment. So here I am now, having seen your more recent comment on another video….
My dad was a quiet man who lived passionately. He was not showy at all in any way. He loved to share his passions with people who were interested. That sharing was how he got me interested in photography. And he was one of the best teachers I ever had about anything. I think you would have enjoyed each other and sharing your curiosity about the world. Not many people have that.
I have seen people painting with light as you describe. I never got into that much as my hand-eye coordination is not that great. What I did was play around using a flashlight, both statically and dynamically, to change an aspect of what I was photographing. It was fun and got me out of the groove of seeing things as they seem to be in our physical reality.
I hope someday you decide to share your light painting… a light painting in a field in The Cotswolds with the Milky Way as your backdrop… now that sounds inspired and inspiring!
