A Dreary, Cold & Wet Morning Walk in a Town Where Time Has Stopped

- So, today we are out and about walking in the Cotswold town and civil parish of Charlbury which is located in west Oxfordshire in the county of Oxfordshire, England. The town is situated in the Evenlode valley and about 6 miles (10 km) north of Witney. In 2011 the town had a population of 2,830. Charlbury's post town is Chipping Norton.
The town's parish church is St Mary the Virgin. The church appears to date back to the eleven hundreds when it belonged to Eynsham Abbey.
This walk was filmed sometime ago, as you will be able to tell by the trees being bare. Unfortunately there is one jump cut in the film purely because I completely messed up a shot and I felt that the film would not benefit from leaving it it in.
During the walk I spotted an old proverb "One who moves to hurriedly, misses the way"...that really fits in well with this channel :). See if you can spot it too!
There is just one 'not so' hidden OAAW logo within this walk. If you spot it, please let us know but don't give away it's location or time stamp it - thank you.
Enter churchyard : 11:55
Exit churchyard : 16:34
Thanks for walking with me.

Hi from Sahuarita, Arizona, USA🌵My name is Norma. I live in the desert in the southern part of Arizona. Our monsoons should start next month. Walking to this video makes me really miss the sound of rain. I truly enjoyed my walk on my treadmill and seeing such beautiful country and the homes are amazing! It was 100 degrees Fahrenheit today. One way to stay cool is to walk with your video! Thank you so much!! 🌵
Hi Norma. Thanks ever so much for your lovely comment(s). That sounds super hot! Good to hear that you are enjoying these walks.
Hope to see you again on another walk.
All the best to you.

My dear friend, your walk so calmed my spirit. As you walked along, I thought you had chosen the perfect background music for your walk. The rain and your footsteps slowed me enough to really see the beauty of my surroundings. Then I heard the birds sing out their joy for the new day. And then, my friend, when I thought the music couldn’t get any better, I heard a bell ring out over your town and the music was complete! Thank you so very much for the care with which you create these pieces. You bring beauty into the world!
Hello Lorna. It is great to hear from you. I hope you are keeping well. Thanks ever so much for your lovely comment. Glad you enjoyed this walk my friend.

How truly beautiful the rain can be. Love hearing the birds, the bell, the gushing water & always your footsteps!! It's pouring here at the moment but thunder & lightening kept me from walking. All I really needed was to click on OAAW anyway, so my hot pot of tea & your lovely walk are just what I needed. Thank you & have a lovely weekend. 🤗💕🤗
Hi Michele. It is really good to hear from you. That sounds like a jolly good plan :).

I lived in England for four years 1989-1993 with the US Air Force at RAF Greenham Common. I sorely miss the old neighborhoods, the countryside, the walking paths and most of all the green and moss. I live in Kansas City now and most all of the older neighborhoods with wonderful old homes are crime ridden and only safe in the daylight hours. Of course the newer neighborhoods are safe but have no character whatsoever. Our summers are hot and humid. I miss the rain cooled days and yes, even the foggy days. I also miss the people of England who are standoffish at first but once you get to know them are friendly with a crazy-dry sense of humor.
Summer, autumn, winter, spring it doesn't matter, the walks are lovely and serene. The out and about logo was easy to spot but I forgot to look out for the other one! The sky looked heavier with clouds towards the end.
Hello. Good to hear from you. Glad you enjoyed this walk whils under wet conditions. The rain did seem to get heavier as the walk progressed.

Indeed, time seems to stand still during this walk in Charlbury; the effect of the rain perhaps??.
A very pretty village, in any case, which has a beautiful air of yesteryear, of the Past.
Thank you Friend OAAW.

Good evening Françoise. It is nice to hear from you. Hope you are OK.
It could the effect of the rain or maybe a combination of things including the rain :).
Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Thank you for walking in the rain in order to share this special place! You've also given me a happy memory--when I was little and it was raining, my Mom said that the "little men" were tap dancing so fast that all we could see were the sparkles on their tap shoes. You've made my day yet again! Hugs from Canada.

Saludos.❤❤❤

I don’t know of any sound that is as soothing as that of water- whatever form it may take (excepting things like the sound of one’s basement flooding, or the splash of a sink overflowing onto the floor!). I never tire of hearing rain on the roof, or outside of the window- and I especially enjoy sitting on our front porch on rainy evenings.
There isn’t any one thing I can isolate to comment on (though there certainly were specific things you passed that I noticed and liked), but I must say that I just enjoyed the whole mood of this walk as a unit. It conveyed such a peaceful sense of solitude- a quietly happy kind, and not a lonely type. Thanks for this lovely walk. :)
Hi Janet. Lovely to hear from you today. I know just what you mean, the sound of rain on an old tin roof is probably my favourite water sound especially if there is the odd rumble of thunder in the distance. I’m not sure why but from a visual standpoint I am not really feeling this walk, it could be because to my eye there seems to be too much vertical bounce, having said that tho, I could happily go to sleep with sleep-phones on listening just to the audio, can’t really fault it…
Thanks for your comment and time on this walk today.
Hope Mr Ryan is doing well.
All the best to you both.

I think every walk (at least on this channel) has some different positive thing to take away from it. This did not make my favorites list, but as I said, it did create a peaceful mood. In the world of music a piece that creates a certain image or impression is called a “tone poem” (as you probably already know), and I would call this walk the visual equivalent to a tone poem. :)
I like thunder, too- as long as it remains a distant rumble. I must confess that having our house struck by lightning in 2022 greatly diminished my liking for storms! Thankfully, it did not start a fire, as it very well could have- but it damaged a bunch of stuff and was truly terrifying.
My husband is okay, but faces yet another outpatient surgery this week. I will probably bring earbuds and be taking one of your walks as I sit in the surgical waiting room- again. OAAW has been in a lot of medical facilities around here!
Thanks for asking. :)
@janetryan9779 thanks for the reassurance. That must of been very scary, especially if you were home at the time. Wishing Mr Ryan a smooth surgery for later this week.
@@OutandaboutWalking
Yes, it was terribly scary…like being inside of a drum when a percussionist struck it with full force. We were at home when it occurred, and the entire house shook. Not fun at all!
Thank you for your good wishes for my husband’s surgery.
Have a great week! :)

My dear English grandmother lived in Australia for decades and said she always missed the rain back at home
I started with a light headache to watch this relaxing walk...the raindrops, the river, the steps...I can even smell the nature. It's so easy the get in touch with myself in a stressed world...Put your boots on and just walk! Thanky you very much for sharing and my headache has gone! Question: is the OUT AND ABOUT WALKING logo an official one? Because at 32:30 I see this logo on the wall. Best greetings from Germany and have a nice, quiet and comfy weekend!
Beautiful. Thank you.
If you did this beautiful walk bare foot, you would appreciate it at a much deeper level of engagement with nature. Recent rain and mud underfoot makes it especially good.
Wow! I slumbered at the pitter patter of raindrops only to be awakened by the tolling of church bells. Wonderful.

I've just stumbled upon this video. I love it; it is mesmerizing! Is the rainy season in England now?
Hi Gema. Thanks for checking the channel out. Glad you are enjoying it. In England it seems to be rainy season all year round (and if not raining it is usually overcast), not all bad tho because occasionally we do manage to get a couple of days of sunshine now and again, so can’t complain :)

It's like one o those empty towns that feature in the "end of the world", post- apocalypse genre films.
Ah, England in summer.
Did you hide the liscence plates by hand or did you use some AI tool? great vide enjoyed it. At the beginiing of the video I was wondering what the popping sound was and the realized it was sthe sound of rain on your rain coat
Hi Yosan. Thank you for your comment. Good to hear that you enjoyed this video.
If only the vehicle license plates could be hidden with A.I technology. Each plate is tracked by hand and frame by frame, so with a camera setting of 30fps, one plate can take the best part of 30 mins to blur out. I probably spent the best part of 20 hours blurring out the plates in this video. As far as I know, I am the only walking channel on CZcams that does this.
All the best to you and thanks again.

why Cotswold blue ? Never heard of it until a few days ago, why is "cotswold" coming up ? -- Anyway, love your walk about.
In the first moments of you walking. You passed a house on the right that had what looked like 2 iron pointy bits coming out from the wall about 9'-10' up from the ground. Does anyone know what they were and/or what they were used for ?
Look like supports for storing ladders. Could be wall ties but they are normally S or X shaped
@petergardner5002 that would be my guess too. What is also interesting, looking at the brickwork of the wall, it almost looks like there might have been two separate openings / doors as the brickwork appears to be different on the left compared to the right 🤔
Does anyone know what type of tree is in the graveyard at the 13:35 mark? I'm from Canada and I'm not sure if I've ever seen a tree like that before?
Possibly a yew tree?

I'm embarrassed, me notification thingy be glitched, so sorry, I happenstanced to see the blue dot on your channel icon this morn. Need to investigate why me "doorbell" didn't ring. Onward....gates open opening, splendid that. Charl be a grand "city", lots to see; ya, me noticed the broken 🕓. I tagged 🚶and left him to count to 10 whilst I ran to hide, not telling where we were, too shamefaced as he retagged me, no place for me to escape to quick enough. And you! I couldn't find you either, always hugging the walls and peeking round corners. Not sure I like these queensbury rules. We must revisit Charl and her puddles, only scraped the tipo the iceburg. I like her, not modern, no skyscrapers.
Good day, L.J. I was going to msg you this evening to see if you are OK. Glad to to see that you are well. Oer, we do have some fun on our walks and especially in the rain!
Glad you enjoyed Charlbury and you never know, it is not unheard of for us to visit the same location twice or sometimes even more!

What a dreary and depressing place, so old looking, everything looks the same, could use some paint, or more trees or something
Don’t talk bull. You best stay in your dirty, over populated, crime ridden, traffic laden, noise and traffic polluted concrete jungle then hadn’t you.
These traditional Cotswold towns in UK are much sought after for buying property. It’s one of our major tourist destinations. On a sunny day they are magical.
