Bike chain keeps falling off the Bafang BBS02 ebike -- a fix with a happy ending

  • the chain keeps falling off the ebike when going down hill over bumps. The original chain guide no longer fits the big chainring that comes with the Bafang BBS02 motor and had to be removed. I bought a third party chain guide but it didn't fit the bike frame. The last option is to change the Bafang chainring with one that has deeper groves and higher teeth, and it worked!

    Thanks for making this videos. My chain slips on the bigger cogs due to a bad chain line. Would this chainring fix that issue? Also, do you have a link to this chainring? Thanks

      If your chain falls off while riding on a flat surface with no bouncing then the issue is not the chainring. I think you will need to adjust the rear derailleur limit screws. If you do want a new chainring like the one I’m using , you can search for in ebay “ebike 104BCD 40/42T chainring for Bafang”. I don’t remember the brand or the seller’s name. It’s made in china.

    Did u give up on the chain guard totally then? I'm sure u could adapt that to fit ur Frame

      I gave up on finding the correct size chain guard. So far the chainring has been working out very well. The chain has never fallen off since then

      @@imdragonslayer good to know. Mine with the stock bbshd ring jumps off even if it looks at a speed bump! It's ridiculous. I have ordered a new chain ring also

    Best to go with a Lekkie Bling Ring. If you're doing serious hills, switch to a 28T and you'll be amazed at how little your motor works compared to a 42T. Ditch the chain guard, ya don't need it.

    • @novicetheaf
      @novicetheaf Před 2 lety +1

      If he switched to a 28t on a BBS02 or 1 you'd have an insanely high negative offset, which will mess up the rear gears usability. I would say buy a 36t it's a decent comprise, take breaks if you're worried about putting the motor under too much stress, these things aren't meant to be treated like motorcycles regardless of the gearing you need to take breaks and let the controller cool down. common fault that they overheat. You can't fit a bling ring that size on a BBS02 or 1 just in case you're curious

    Can you let us know where you purchased the chain ring from ... model no... and link to where you purchased would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
    That last section looks crazy steep and rough without the motor it'd be a very slow painful experience even for the toughest.

      I bought it from a seller in Ebay; don't remember the seller's name. You can search for "e-bike 104BCD chainring for Bafang mid-drive" 40/42T

      You get them off wish for 15 pounds 💷 that's for the spider aswell as the chain ring but I don't think they will as good quality as the lekkie bling ring

      KMC makes a good one. Rather costly - 40+ $ - but reliable behind a BBS-HD. I have three, and waxed all three this AM. (Crock pot takes an hour-plus to warm up, and then five to ten minutes per chain in the hot wax mix.)
      Half paraffin, half Beeswax, and add heavy gear oil to plasticize and supply lubrication. The more oil, the better lube - and more *mess,* too. You’ll want to tailor this last to your own preferences. I originally started with a fair amount of oil, and have cut it back a *lot* because of the sludge that accumulated on the cassette and other sprockets…

      @@mygoalcrash8077 Top speed. Don’t remember. Probably 25mph default. But there’s a menu setting where you can set the wheel size smaller to say 20inch and the speed will increase accordingly, assuming your bike wheel is larger than 20”. I can go upto 37mph with peddle assist. Downhill is very fast which I have done 45mph

    Use poorly installed low-end components and this is what you get. 36K+ miles and I've never had a chain break or skip a gear.

    • @novicetheaf
      @novicetheaf Před 2 lety +1

      Actually my friend has the exact same setup and he's using a nine speed along with a full suspension bike, and he has no issues. Poorly installed, what are you smoking? Give the guy a break. If he's using a wider chain 8 speed and has a hardtail he'll have these issues guaranteed, the stock chainring has very narrow teeth more suited to a 9-11 speed setup
