- Can a perfectly ordinary bloke properly tune an old carb fed ferrari 308? what's more can he balance the carbs using the tube method? Here I tune the fuel mixtures, check the ignition timing and then take it out to see how it drives!

Call me superstitious but I would not get rid of that car. It's what defined this channel to begin with and has been your lucky charm despite all the aggro it gave you. And now it's sorted you should definitely enjoy it as a good weather car.
As much as the Influenza has gained the channel popularity Id definitely say it was Jack's 964 that defined the channel. That was the car that initially attracted me to subscribe . After many cars gone by , I still enjoy my weekly Number 27 fix .
There will be a time I expect the 308 to be passed to it's next custodian as I understand Jack is a big believer in the mantra , "Variety is the spice of a CZcams channel life "
Keep going Giacomo👍🏻❤️👊🏻😎
@@hunterdubber2915 964 ? Never heard of it . . .
Same here ... but I wud get rid of the old fuel and ignition system and bring the 308 into 21st century
@@princesssolace4337yeah it can be done, the car wizard did it, however he is having issues, can’t remember but it had something to do with the computer
@@jimamizzi1 A friend got a 308 GT4 UK rhd, shipped it over to Kuala Lumpur where its gonna reside for the rest of her life. He uses Haltech Elite 2500 ecu, Jenvey itbs ... reason for doing it bcoz he wants to crank it up first time everytime, tired of tuning the carbs and it is much better in reliability. He tuned it by volumetric efficiency to a 100 octane punp gas which is cheap in Malaysia plus it gives a better mileage. The COP with sequential injectors gives a better torque curve and much improve Hp.
Car wizard shud just go for Haltech Elite ecus, kinda pricey but with the tech support it's better value for money. He shud stop mucking around with cheap ecus
Tuning multiple carb engines is why I decided to become a diesel mechanic!
It's the reason why I'm quite happy with mechanical injection on my classics. It's analogue and old school, but doesn't put itself out of tune if you look at it wrong.
@@althejazzman The main advantage here is the noise, injected 308/328s sound like nothing!
Though this heartbreak and how tough it seems to fathom is absurd to watch.
The payoff should be worth it here!
Jack, your efforts and perseverance on the Ferrari 308 has been fantastic to watch, the highs and lows, everything. And what a Ferrari, Robin Masters would be proud. Whichever your decision, thanks for sharing your journey to success.
More influenzo!! Car really looks and sounds great, well done!
Jack, you have pretty much JUST got that car looking and sounding really proper! Why get rid of it now? Keep it for a bit, and enjoy the 'fruits' of your MANY labours!!
A great update on the 308 Jack, no doubt Iain is having a chuckle! Now that's it's sorted so well and you want to use it, I would suggest a road trip into France/Italy with maybe Harry or STG for the company!
Your car gas gone from sounding like a sick puppy, to an absolute joy to hear being driven. Bodyshop did a great job, too - I could see the difference immediately.
Well done on how well the Influenzo has turned out Jack! Your an inspiration to us all I'm sure!
I would be sorry to see the Influenzo go but I'd be as equally excited for it's replacement 🤗👍
“Driven it swiftly without being terrified”…..love it 😆
After all that work, heartache, frustration and finally success I don’t know how you can consider selling it. It’s a fabulous sunny weather car.
An excellent series, thank so much 🙏
Jack beautiful work! I had a hard time using the hose method to check the air flow balance of my carbs as well. However I found it worked beautifully to adjust the mixture to be spot on. You can hear down the barrels slight pops and crackles when it’s too lean and it almost whistles a bit as it gets too rich. I found this got the carbs on my 308 a lot better dialed in than just listening to the revs go up and down. For timing definitely check it again at 5k. I have mine at 34 degrees at 5k which gave me about 10-11 degrees at idle. The throttle is quite responsive with it set that way. Great work though. I think you need to keep the Influenzo around. I’m sure it will find a way to create more content for you. We’d hate to lose you as a fellow 308 owner 😊
Sometimes you forget just how good looking this car is. So beautiful. I really dislike coupes, but would struggle to sell this car. Given how truly sorted it is I feel like maintaining it into the future requires your level of enthusiasm. These cars are artworks, and need to be tended to by people like you so not only are they maintained, but also seen by young and old so that this level of beauty remains in our consciousness.
That 8:19 soundbite of it bodies any fuel injected 308/328 I’ve seen. However good the reliability must be on those you can’t beat this noise!
As for you keeping it, I am sure the sustained heartbreak has been tough to navigate but…if it stays sorted and it carburettors properly from now on…
No other car suits you as much as Influenzo. It’s uncanny!
Love the car everytime I see it.
Hope you end up keeping it!
Doubt a coupe would’ve helped much chassis flex wise though, for a sports car experience it seems the 308 GT4 is a better drive! What a car though.
Much love from Greece!
This is the 1st time I've heard you say how well everything's going without anything blowing up 5 minutes later 👍
🤣🤣🤣🤣
This was so interesting and informative to watch! I personally have heard, but never seen these old school carburetor tuning methods before!
Job well done👏 Jack Sir!
I love how far the Influenzo has come! The engine sounded so great and responsive👌.
I am loving this series on your old Ferrari. The ups and downs of parts breaking or wearing out, fitting better parts and having to fiddle about with carburetion etc to get those days when it all comes together and it feels bloody brilliant. My old Ducati is much the same and I like the fact that it's not computer controlled, new cars and bikes are amazing but I can't really fiddle with the plastic covered engines and electronic suspension. More reliable maybe but boring.
Great shots in the car Sounds great Music to my ears! Well done sir!
It made my day seeing you with a rubber tube stuck in your ear mate! 🤣🤣
Thanks buddy!! Hope you’re well…
Iain Tyrrell tunes the carbs that way (or at least he shows that), and some old expert mechanics here in Argentina did the same, tuning the carbs with a tube, hearing the engine.
I tend to think that using one vacoumeter per carb barrell simultaneosly leads to a better, finer result.
Best wishes.
The 308 sounds downright NASTY! (in a good way) You've put a LOT into this thing and it has helped you grow the channel immeasurably... at least keep it thru the summer before making any rash decisions.
You really need a big moustache! That would complete the project. Cheers.
Hi Jack. Your 308 has been quite a journey, but I must say it’s sounding absolutely fantastic! Very well done, your patience has paid off, and no doubt your confidence will have grown too because of your achievement.
I support your idea to move on. I think for several reasons, the challenge has been resolved with the 308, so new challenges need to be found in something equally as interesting/and/or exotic. It is also an opportunity to seek out something which may satisfy your desires a bit more, like the rigidity issues.
Maybe enjoy the 308 chapter for the summer, and then look forward to a new project to work on through the winter? Anyway, your down to earth presentation style, detail in including this in your videos, and the interesting cars you feature keep me subscribed! A Pantera would be interesting… 😉
Excellent work Jack! Enjoy it for the summer 👌🏻
Well it has been a long journey (understatement) but I think you have got there! I like what the paint shop have done, looks good. I would tune it with the airflow meter mainly because I am now almost deaf in one ear so that would be a fail for me! I think you should enjoy the car for a while at least if only to get pleasure from your work. Great sounding car Jack thank you for taking us for a spin.👍👍
I'm currently re-watching Magnum and in the first season there's an episode where Magnum is 'Forced' by Higgins to get the Ferrari 'Serviced'. Magnum, being a cheap-skate gets TC to do it, rather than taking it to a Ferrari garage and for much of the rest of the episode it's backfiring and stalling as Magnum only paid TC $20 🤣
sound fantastic, glad it's sorted finally, drive it all summer long.
Jack, so good to see you back on your project cars, these are what made me subscribe to your channel, enjoy your vehicle tests but need to see more tinkering and pyjama trousers 😂😂
That's terrific! The sound, and the accomplishments in repair all around! For the sound try some tunnels, overpasses, parking garages, and narrow streets with close houses, windows open so you can hear the reflections of sound. This is probably a special car for you now, keep that in mind, enjoy it for a bit. I need a stable update, your cars and what they need. 1k plus channels I'm subscribed to, hard to keep track.
What you have demonstrated with the Influenzo is that a decent home mechanic can keep these aging classics in decent nick. Keep it up.
Looks like a Ferrari… sounds like a Ferrari… you got yourself a Ferrari baby 😂. Have some summer fun Jack.
Influenza is looking and sounding the part! Great vid as usual...cheers!!!
So good to see it working properly! You can't even think about selling it till you've taken it to the Alps! (and then you may never sell it ;) )
Great job! Very complicated job to tune these engines. Your skills are amazing. Takes a lifetime to learn the process. My daily driver, a lexus is200 (toyota really) hasn't needed tunning even after 21 years! Starts on the button every day. Like most modern cars, they never need tunning. Incredible.
I owned and with tremendous remorse sold a beautiful 1977 GTB…I now own and, with meager amateur skills, maintain a 1978 GTS (carb rebuilds, fuel hoses, gearbox oil pan gasket, ignition coil, wires, plugs, fluids, etc). Though the GTB would bring a higher value, the GTS is much more enjoyable for me to drive with the top removed. I hope you don’t sell as I feel this 308, like mine for me, has become a part of your life journey. Thanks for the great video. ‘78 GTS 25349.
As nice to hear as nice to see, what a thing the 308 is. Top work Jack!
Great video Jack, lovely looking car & sounds amazing.
Nice meeting you today.
Great to meet you too Steve!!
It is spring and love is in the air! 308 is the proof of that! She also sounds lovely!
She is like any wild women hard to tame?
Oh my god that car finally sounds like it should. Well done for persevering - I'd have lost patiences years ago. :)
That sound is fantastic isn't it
Congrats, Jack! You have taken a big step forward with the Influenzo. We want to see and hear(!) more of it. How about taking us on a road trip?
Awesome car. Please do a few more videos in its finished form before you move it on. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Jack, I wanted to suggest quarter turns on the carb adjustments, but what do I know? It’s YOUR car mate. And without wishing to claim that it defines you personally, the Influenzo really does define your channel, every bit as much as your self effacing humour, plucky ‘can do’ attitude, determination to get the job done, eventually - whatever it takes, and your wonderful way of smiling through it all, and in the spirit of Kipling’s IF, meeting with triumph and disaster, and treating those two imposters just the same.
And if I spent less time vicariously living other people’s automotive adventures, my SAAB 93 hood might be fixed, and at least one of my 16 bikes might be restored and on the road.
But I don’t begrudge a minute spent watching your excellent channel. Indeed you inspire me to endeavour to persevere.
Here’s hoping you can justify keeping the 308 and enjoy it for as long as it makes you smile. It surely is a different car now. Well done, and thank you for sharing.
Very nice to have news of your flighty, red car. Glad to hear that it seems to be sorted [although given the history I am not holding my breath] :)
Looks like its working/sounding/looking great Jack, well done on your efforts! It's your car to sell as you wish, you've done your very best for it, & so many more cars to buy/try out!
Perhaps a Ferrari get together/little roadtrip with JayEmm & Ratarossa, you all have such different cars? Wishing you many happy miles! 🙏🙏
No! Keep it Jack, it’s such a legacy and a tribute to everything you’ve done on the channel! Part of the family now!
The Car sounds amazing!!!
I agree with some others on here that this Car is the only reason I watch your channel.
Iain Tyrrell is actually a trained musician being a singer. I think that explains his extraordinary ear.
Always great to see this one. Take care Jack
That exhaust note is killer.
Best I've heard in a long time.
Fantastic job! I wish I could buy it, but alas I cannot. Dave'sHongKong is correct. You should keep the car that really helped build your channel. I am sure that most of us would enjoy updates. I know that I would. Maybe even taking a holiday somewhere beautiful when the weather is nice. Keep it Jack!!
It is great to see the car back on the channel.
That car sounds fantastic and the wide grin you were trying to suppress was great to see.
Your efforts to fettle this car have been great to watch and this car seems to be one one those cars that has a soul and you have managed to bring some its verve back. It would be a shame if it didn't get to continue its life as car that gets owned and critically driven by someone who does not share your passion.
If you decide to sell it hopefully you can be choosy about who you sell it to. It would be terrible if it was just sold to a speculator who never drove it and it just sat in a warehouse or just as bad if it was sold someone who didn't realise they need to put some effort in to keep it running at optimum levels.
Defo a keeper - you’ll regret it tell me it doesn’t put a smile on your face every time you open the garage door - I keep expecting you to bump into Harry going the other way!!!
Sounds awesome to me ! Well done
Good to see this car again and its sounds great!
My favorite vintage Ferrari, perfect summer car. Keep it and have fun!
Well done. Sounds great
Love it! Thank you Jack! 🏎️💨💨
Just as I was about to go outside and finish some rust prevention,You drag me back in!
Capristo exhaust next! This is why I subscribed to your channel. This car. Thank you.
Genuinely never thought I'd see this day. A great success.
Sound great now. Well done Jack. I may have misunderstood what you were trying to do with the vacumn gauge but it wont help at all with adjusting the mixture. Your method of listening to the revs works fine and will certainly get you very close. The gauge is only for checking the balance between each carb. You got it pretty damn close if the way it sounds on the drive is any indication.
Keep it!
You say it's not a proper sports car but you have the Elise for that. You've put so much into this that it would be crazy not to enjoy it.
I had a smile on MY face as you were driving. But the challenge was always "can he fix it?", so if the answer is "it's fixed", time to move on. You'll have no problem shifting the car, and could get something pretty interesting for the money... thanks for the journey - we've loved it!
Great video 👍 When u are finished with it u can do a roadtrip to Mr.Tom and make him to see and mabye drive it and then sign it.. would be so cool and an awsome closure.! U and Mr.Tom with the Magnum intro played. Sell it to Mr.Tom 🙂
That sounds great Jack. Probably the best sounding 308 ever, not that I have any 308 experience. Lol. As for moving it on, as it's LHD have you thought of using any of your Italian connections and advertising it over there. Might fetch a higher price? Just a thought.😊
Love this car, guilty pleasure. Don't sell!!!!! (Or sell it to me!😉) Thanks for bringing her out again!
Wow Jack,, sounding so much better. Seems to pull cleanly to decent rpm, looks great too. Be a shame to move it on after all your efforts, but if you do then so be it.
That must be such a buzz driving the now fixed and tuned 308 along country roads on a beautiful English spring day. Bravo!
As for potentially selling it, I get it but you must get another problematic Ferrari to replace it. A different model maybe? For me that’s what I love about this channel.
Today you have mastered the 308 Carb mechanics & tomorrow the world! Well done! I sense closure (which is great for you and sad for us) What next?
Hello Jack, thank you for this video always so pleasant to watch
I look forward to the day you will try a 1984 Aston Martin Vantage Oscar India !
Well done, I like the video.
These are the kind of video's where I'm on CZcams for!
That sound!! 😮😮😮 Wow!!! Nothing beats it!
Well done video.
Lovely sound! Yes, you saved that one for sure👍
RE the throttle linkage, have you thought about looking at what direction and by how much tightening the lock nut shifts the linkage? If you could guage that, then adjust the linkage by that much in the opposite direction. Then by tightening the lock nut the linkage should pull back into the sweet spot. Just a thought.
that sounds like a proper Ferrari! Nicely done Sir!!!
Sounds fantastic, well done for sorting all the issues you have had with it, what can you possibly replace it with, you already have the lotus so maybe a cool saloon
Get a wideband O2 sensor on there too. Wide open throttle jetting, if still stock, will be incredibly lean with current fuel. If using F36 emulsion tube, these engines really like a 140 main jet, and 190-200 air corrector. Stock jetting is much smaller and you’re leaving 10hp on the table and it will run much hotter due to being lean
Glad it's driving so well. Funny thing but I don't remember my 308 ever doing that crackling from the exhaust on overrun. But that was 20+ years ago!
It’s running lean
I notice that Iain Tyrrell uses a smaller diameter listening pipe than you, which might have two benefits. It increases the gas speed past the open end, and it allows the pipe to fit further into your ear, both of which should make the carburettor flow noise clearer.
Oh that sounds so sweet when pulling!!
You've cracked it Jack, this car no longer makes me feel ill at the thought of the next big cost coming; perhaps a new bit of fuel pipe wouldn't be considered too extravagant, cable ties, really?
Great to feel like we've come full circle on Influenzo. He's running as you always wanted. I know what you are saying about it being a convertible. My GTSi had that flaw for me. But with the top on, it was easy to forget about it. And after all you put into this, I'd just kick back and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Let the time to sell it come to you, don't go looking for it. Your car is worth some good money, use it wisely and don't buy a money pit.
The gift that keeps on giving
Sounds right, looks ok, have fun , take it out for a track day
That exhaust is fabulous! Want it on mine!
Influenzo has come along way, sounds awesome from that rear mike. I'm sure it will break your heart to part with it and we will miss it, however youtube is all about content. Enjoy till the height of summer and then sell for top money.
You've come too far with this journey (us subscribers too), to sell it...... Its an integral part of you and this channel.
I adore that INFLUENZO…….
He has a mind of his own🇮🇹🇮🇹
This is so awesome! I have wondered if Ian’s method was the least bit accurate. I told my wife I’d love for Ian to tune a set of carbs with his hose and then I’d go behind him with the tool you have( I have exactly the same one) and check his work. He’s either a genius with a hose or it’s total BS and he goes back with an actual tool. Either way it would be fun.
I’ve seen him do it.. he does tune an engine well!
@@Number27 I have also seen him do it. I know he’s an awesome tech but the hose thing seem weird. I may try it myself.
I think you'd be be more consistent using a stethoscope that hooked on to the trumpet and gave a set placement and distance into the venturi. I think poking a wobbly piece of hose around is imprecise and has too many variables.
Sounds glorious !
Jack this car is the fundations of your channel!!!! If it was sold i would less interested in your videos!!!! Car ( from the outside sounds Good ) seems to be running well!!!!
Wow, that exhaust noice, eargasm!
By the way the paint is looking realy nice that rossonred in the bright sunlight looks good and tuning the carburetors withbthat air flow meter looks like fun obviously worked is thidsn almost sorted Ferrari 308
Apart from the engine sound, imho the best thing about the Fezza is that it’s a convertible! Open top motoring adds SOO much to the driving experience of any car, especially a sportscar.
If you do decide to sell it I cannot imagine you could find a replacement that would cause you such despair but at the same time look so good it would give you the desire to keep persevering.
What a glorious sound!
Molto bene, Jack. You've cured Influenzo. I will be sad to see it leave the garage, but perhaps it's time to move on. This freshly sorted 308 could move you into something quite nice indeed. You might just miss that glorious sound, tho...
Road: Slow
Jack: All the beans!
😂
It sounds glorious!!
Wooo, back to our favorite car!
Hmmm... a number 27 ferrari video where nothing goes wrong?? Who is this imposter!?!?
Seriously though, you've done a brilliant job with it Jack, when you do decide to move it on, I can't wait to see what your next project will be.
