Testing .50 BMG in a Semi-Auto Shotgun

- Today we’re testing a bit of gun meme lore: Will a 12 gauge fire a .50 BMG round? And to make it more interesting, what happens when you try it in a semi-auto?

Create a barrel insert that would actually convert a smoothbore shotgun into a .50BMG. Like an actual barrel of sorts that you can just slip into the barrel to "neck down" the barrel. I've no doubt the shotgun would die from this, but want to see if this could actually work.

Many people have blown up shotguns by shooting a 50bmg round through it... but I have yet to see anyone shooting 12 GA through a 50 cal...
Brandon we need to take a moment to reflect on the fact that the JTS has outperformed the PAK. With that out of the way I have a terrible idea. With those .50 cases blown out it is possible to trim them back, reprime, load a full power charge for .50, and seat a 12 guage slug in the case. Some form of Khyber Pass crimping (I dunno, stake it with a chisel for all I care) and I'd wager you'll be picking pieces of the JTS out of the berm. That is all.
Bump so Brandon sees this.
yes please we need this
I need to see this
Bump bumpadoo
you can get metal shotgun hulls in brass and steel.. dunno what this would prove. he never showed us the case head but I suspect it might be bulged a lot making priming it rather difficult.. and what powder do you want to use? if it is standard rifle smokeless the slug will just be a bore obstruction and everything shooting out the back. have to use some kind of shotgun loading to even give a decent chance of budging the slug before the detonation.. I wonder if that shotgun is rifled? will need a better testing apparatus then some string and a 50 gallon barrel of water to hide behind if he does it. taofledermous collab perhaps? he loads some insane stuff.
- Who would have guessed Brandon should have started his AK50 design process with the Chinese AK 12 Gauge.
Great video! Entertainment at it's finest. It's guns crossed with action figure therapy!!!😄😄
i get on youtube to check out a video or 2 of yours, then i watch like 15 of them hahahahahaha you are hilarious bro!!! keep it up
You could 3d print a sabot for the 50 BMG projectile to make it fit in the 12 gauge barrel and use one of the fire formed casings to hold the sabot. Basically a big shotgun round that has a 50 BMG projectile in a discarding sabot. The firearm would most definitely explode though.
Underrated comment
Could cast (or print) a cartridge support for the case to the neck, and sabot the projectile , however it still wouldn't work, the projectile would push its way through the sabot, unless you eliminate the spear point in some way. Even then with those pressures I don't think the sabot would survive.
This'll be buried, but you could print a full barrel sleeve for it and put it in from the muzzle end after the round is chambered (what could go wrong there?) or just make an entire new smooth bore barrel
We're definitely thinking about doing that. The problem is it's too long for our printers. It'd have to be segmented or something
@@ChefurCustom do it segmented.
@@ChefurCustom sounds like CR-30 is now a business expense. :)
Or do it then load the round? Seems a lot safer, not that any part of this is safe
@@ChefurCustom what about a 12gauge chamber with a thicker 20 gauge barrel? Although that'd be a very high chance of blowing it up, but it'll make great content!🤣
The JTS AK12 is a beast. I was pleasantly surprised.
I'm no gun nut but I just KNEW instinctively something was going around the tip to prevent the casing blowout. Next round, using a carved baffle rubber just around the beveled portion of the casing, separate piece to guide the tip to the end of the barrel, but some means of catching the sleeve so it doesn't kill the momentum of the round in flight.

I remember reading something from a tester at Remington who decided to hand load proof shells to higher and higher pressures until the barrels actually started failing. As I recall, the 12 gauge Remington barrels he was testing started to blow up at 55k psi. He was increasing pressure by 5k psi increments and they all survived until they got over 50k psi. So, those particular Remington barrels could TECHNICALLY withstand the pressure of .50 BMG, but just barely. Considering that the diameter of the barrel won't allow a .50 bullet to seal it up, there was never a chance that barrel would explode. I would have bet money on it.
Hoo yah SDI! Finishing my last class now! Should be doing homework tbh
Suggestion: reload the .50 BMG shell that became form-fitting to the 12g with a foster slug. Powder load : as brave as you are willing to be. Preferably pistol powder.

Duct tape a support on the 50 BMG casing so it has more flex than the plastic and print a well fitting sabot of sorts for the bullet and it theoretically would cause resistance and therefore allow all(or most) of the powder to burn.

It would be really cool if you created a actual metal barrel "insert" for the Saiga with proper shape and (maybe rifling) with a threaded end to attach a muzzle break that acts as a compression lock against the end of the Saiga barrel for the insert to be secure. Might work?
In Germany/Europe a "Einstecklauf" (plug in barrel) is somewhat common on old Drilling or combined guns. With this you are able to shoot a smaller cartridge out of one of your shot barrels when you want to hunt smaller game or reduce the cost of your ammo (or want to make an old 16 gauge viable). I dont think that these are a thing in the US but I could be wrong
Sounds dangerous. Let's do it!

Imagine spending years developing the AK-50 and finding out a rebarreled Chinese Saiga clone BTFO’s your entire design team.
Well yeah but no. The point of the AK-50 is it supports the round, is structurally solid and can cycle the ammunition. Not only is arming this thing a whole 3-minute process but even with the 3d printed stuff it's not directing it particularly well and given the thing was falling apart I'm sure it would just be a matter of 1-3 more rounds before it either fell or blew apart. Honestly you could probably do this in a more quality shotgun and get better results but nobody wants to pay for a quality shotgun and then possibly shred it.

Those spent shells would be some awesome shelve decorations!
I want to see all of these round combinations (especially the printed parts) through ballistic gel, would be a lot cooler of a comparison that shows how much energy is really lost/retained
If you want that JTS to cycle, you need to run about 100-200 high brass shells through the two larges gas settings (exluding 0). That is what it took for the last one I handled to cycle anything other than high brass #4. Once you break it in to that degree it handles anything.
