I was horrifically depressed since childhood. It was relentless. I assumed it would ultimately end me somehow. About twelve years ago I randomly accepted the offer from a friend of a few doses of mushrooms. I did them two consecutive nights alone. First night was pretty mild. The second night? Wow. I saw my depression from every angle, realized much. Next day: depression totally gone. Never came back, never coming back. It's like it's a forest far away I can remember, and could probably find again with enough effort, but it has zero impact on anything in my life or mind. They honestly saved my life and improved it immensely. I never did them again, either. I wish there was a good, organized way to administer them to people who would benefit from them.

Hearing James open up really resonates with me. I was always trying to fill that hole . My dad was abusive fundamentalist who beat, harassed and berated me constantly till I was 14 and fought him . I sought out inclusion and acceptance. In the 70’s that meant drugs, alcohol and mixing with strangers . Then there was bars and sex ..then there was a crash and burn phase. I sought therapy and was diagnosed with sex/love addiction by a counselor in my 40’s .. I settled down and got married . We’ve been together for 25 years now . I’m content and hes my rock . Nothing ever seems good enough until I share it with him. When I see something I know he likes , bringing it home to him feels me up inside . Giving him care and love gives me the fullness I never received as an unwanted child of two diametrically opposed forces as parental figures . Bless you JF 🙏

As a recovering sex addict, I can relate to everything James is talking about. My addiction didn’t involve hooking up with other women, it involved pornography and objectifying women both in person and online.
And I know James’s addiction isn’t pornography but I think people have to be vigilant about online pornography. It’s like having an open bar that never closes. And as long as nobody can see your searches on your phone, you can do in complete ‘silence’. And this goes for everyone. Young teenagers have their own phones and can start watching porn at a very early age. And because porn objectifies women, young boys feel that it’s ok to treat women as sex objects and it begins to warp their minds to thinking so.
Anyway, just wanted to share a bit of my story and like James, I hope others can learn from it.

Glad I stopped watching that sht years ago. I see people here asking how. One good way is simply
To not entertain those thoughts. I don’t use social media either because sex and half naked women are being pushed down your throat constantly. Over time you get used to it and you slowly stop thinking about it as much. To me a healthier outlet is just thinking about women you like in the shower or something along those lines. It feels way more natural and normal. I’m amazed that people actually think prn is good for society and almost applaud it and guys will make fun of u for not being into it. No it's not. It's about yourself and the people around you, although, it's more about who you are as a person, does not matter what age.
I was not raised in a perfect environment, all the boys around me smoking and drinking at very early age of 12-16, but I never did that, I've never smoked and never drank. The first drink I had was at the age of 18 and I disliked it, as my father was forcing me to do it, because it's a "man thing". I always hated the subjugation of things and I had many chances with girls too, but I never used any, because I did not want myself to be shallow and put myself down on the level of others. Does that make me a better person? No, because I have made many other mistakes with life, in general with people and connections, which were base a lot on relationships. But I've never had to do anything like that. Even, right now, being 25 and virgin, which I don't really care about, I do respect the space of others and won't do anything stupid. I care about my life.
Now, if you are someone with "power" like Franco, I can't say anything about that. But as a regular person, I think fighting temptations is not hard, unless you enjoy them and don't feel guilty.

Sure you never had a temptation to drink or smoke, but not everyone's addictions are the same. Some people are addicted to the internet. The brain usually latches on to things that it feels will relieve stress or pain. Your brain development never happened that way, which is good. It's insulting to have people like James Franco who partake in consensual, if not inappropriate, sexual behavior be placed in an umbrella category of sexual predators. His actions are a far cry from those of a rapist or child molester. The ethics of his actions are up for interpretation but he is not to be lumped into a category with true monsters of the world. I was a huge fan of James Franco before any of these things came to light. It was really hard, truly, because i looked up to him, but i couldn’t accept his behavior or turn a blind eye. It’s been what almost 4 years since the allegations? I’ve always wondered why he stayed silent, because it’s a human instinct to defend yourself or at least make everything little better by shutting down “rumors” (denying the accusations, which clearly is wrong), but now i understand why he didn’t say a word. First off, i want to say that i’m very glad that he admitted everything he has done. And i am glad that he stayed silent, because it means that he took time to reflect and change. Despite the fact that he has done horrible things, in this podcast, you can see clearly the journey he has come and the willingness to change, which is very rare. He cannot change the past but what he can do is learn from this mistakes and actually help himself because it’s obvious that he has or had problems, some serious problems, whether it’s with alcohol or sex addiction. I like how genuine this interview is, and the interviewer did an amazing job. Even thought, it’s not my place to forgive him, i truly believe that he is on a right path and that he can change, because he is in the process of accepting who he is and reflecting on the past, which helps one overcome the issues and be a better person for yourself and for others, as well.
And lastly, i’d like to say good luck to him on this tough journey he is on, only because i truly believe that he wants to change.

Hang in there James! We are all people and human beings that make mistakes. Just because your life is under a microscope everyone has an opinion and place to much judgment, but never thinking of what our own mistakes we all make trying to live our own lives Regardless of our social status's, rich or poor. I am still a fan.

    2 things.
    1. I’ve taken one of James classes that he taught. Everyday 75% of the girls came into class showing cleavage, done up with make up and made sure they showed up looking hot for James. They would all stay after class like little groupies and talk to him.
    2. I know what it’s like to use women as something to fill a void or for validation, especially if your sober from drugs and alcohol it can become a serious addiction even for a regular person. NOW imagine being a rich A list actor who is labeled as a sex symbol that girls throw themselves at everywhere he goes. It’s a different level and becomes a constant battle.
Obviously he did some things that were wrong, but he’s human and he seems to be working on himself like a man. Shout out to James, always been a huge fan and you were always a solid teacher when I took class. Hope you make it through all this and put out some more classic films!

I took classes with James too! you are most definitely right about that. When I saw all of the allegations I thought the same thing, the girls in class were all about meeting and hooking up with James and I even questioned at the time if they were there to learn and take from the experience of working with him. James was always a stand up guy and super respectful to everyone in class. He even gave me and plenty of students opportunities to audition and work alongside him and other name actors in his projects. I cant name one other Oscar nominated star who's ever done that for MULTIPLE actors just starting out. Maybe things happened behind closed doors that I never saw but he's not the only person to blame.

My first serious relationship ending just completely broke something inside me and I stopped giving a shit about whether my actions hurt anybody for a long time, sadly.
