- This is my new video how I discovered the amazing power of electricity in removing rust from metal! Rusty metal surfaces can be a real problem, but I think, I solved this problem! In this video I’ll show you how I used an old laptop adapter and some knowledge to get rid of rust from an old metal wrench.
The process of removing rust from metal with the help of electricity is known as "electrolytic rust removal" or "electrolysis rust removal." It works on the principle of using an electric current to reverse the oxidation process that causes rust.
Here's what you'll see in this video:
🔌 Setting up the rust removal station: I’ll guide you through my the simple setup process.
💡 Understanding the science: Learn the science behind how electricity can tackle rust.
🛠️ Tools and materials: I’ll show the essentials I used for this electrifying project.
🔋 Electrolysis in action: Watch as I demonstrate the complete rust removal process step by step.
✨ Reveal the results: See the incredible transformation as the rust disappears before your eyes!
Electrolytic rust removal is effective for removing even deep-seated rust without damaging the underlying metal. It's a relatively gentle and non-abrasive method that is particularly useful for restoring antique tools, automotive parts, and other metal items.
⚡However, it's important to follow safety precautions when working with electricity and chemicals, and the process may take some time depending on the severity of the rust.

Thank you so much for watching my video! Your comment weights so much for me!!!
From what I know, you would get better results if you use baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) instead of salt, and use iron instead of steel as anode.
Thanks a lot for commenting! I actually used iron (not steel) as anode
I beleve your anode is steel uderwise it would be rusted like rebar not shiny @@YouCanTelevision
Yes
Steel is refined iron....not chemically different to a significant extent. In the process of cleaning a steel strip, it is first pickled in acid (Hydrochloric or Sulfuric) then cleaned with alternating polarity. Example :Cathodic, Anotic, Cathodic, Anodic, Cathodic in a mostly Baking Powder bath (Sodium Carbonate). This has the combined effect neutralizing the pickling acid and providing ionization that conducts the electrical current.
Use washing soda...sodium carbonate...not sodium bicarbonate.
Salt can liberate chlorine gas...
👍👍👍.Thank you
You are welcome, my friend! Thanks for watching!
You can also boil a rusty tool in distilled water. The rust turns black (ferric oxide). Card off the loose material and spray with vinegar and allow to rust and boil again. Repeat three or four times and you now have rust resistant bluing like a firearm. (Rust bluing process). It looks nice😊
Thank you so much for your advise! I hope it would also be helpful for the audience

What was the other metal that you placed with the spanner?
Just ordinary piece of steel. You just need to clean it from rust to ensure good contact with the wire
I thought it it was a magnet....
Sure could have said so in the video.@@YouCanTelevision
If he is an American, he didn't have a spanner, but a wrench
I use an old brake drum, 1/2 rebar was dissolving too fast.
Approximately the same result will be after processing with an iron brush, using an angle grinder for five minutes. The only difference is that the tool will be more shiny, and the charger will remain intact.
This method does not require any efforts from my part, but iron brush does. The rust on this wrench is quite deep and old, so you would need quite some time and efforts to get rid of it. So, electrolysis method is better, for this particular task, as for me
@@YouCanTelevision Well. It was a joke to some extent. You have the right to use any method. You got my like anyway.
Thanks a lot for commenting, it's much appreciated! Please, check out my other videos!
Hydrochloric acid in dilute form works a lot faster
@@YouCanTelevision rust converter is cheap! little effort. this is a scam.
Some suggestions:
More safety surrounding your electrical equipment
Attach a metal rod on your cathode side and resist submerging the wire so you can reuse the charger's wire.
State the advantage of electrolysis. One of them being that it blues the metal and thus mitigates rust from forming as easily. This does not happen with a vinegar bath or power tool rust removal methods.
Thank you for your input!
@@YouCanTelevision Also, this should be done outside, this process produces Hydrogen gas, very explosive.
Jesus fuck, it's only probably 5 volts. I've been an electronics tech for 40 years, and I don't worry about chicken shit like this. And use bare hands.

VERY helpful
Thanks a lot for your commenting and for watching my video!
Hi you can do the same with viniger, and you can save power.👍
Yes, I know, thank you for your comment! I made a video about that method - rust removal using the mixture of vinegar and baking soda

Thanks. Follow that up with Simichrome and it Will look brand new.

cool idea man! but seems like too much time is involved I just use Dremel and a wire brush! thanks for sharing what do you do with the liquid? seems like you can have a cup of coffee! LOL...
Yes, cool idea about the coffee! This is where some money may be saved!))
Using a Dremel removes the rust and good metal, and the item will rust again. Using electrolysis removes rust and forms a protective coating. It is a form of "Bluing".
It can also cause hydrogen embrittlement and leaves a tough remove black stain.
Acids are best.
@@davidhandyman7571 coat the item/tool in Lanoline. Lanolin is a highly effective formulation for long-term corrosion protection on metal surfaces under extreme climatic and high humidity conditions. This product generates a lanolin film which does not dry out or wash off easily with water. A single treatment will provide protection for an indefinite period (years). The exposed area of the undercarriage should be re-treated every other year, or as needed depending on the use, and geographic region

Hi,
leave 24 h in cheap vinegar, then clean with a pan cleaner (steel-wool). Same result :-)
I do horseshoe art and get a lot of used shoes that are really nasty. After manually cleaning all the crud off, I throw them in a plastic tote and use good old 2% vinegar and electrolysis to clean the rust off. I've got pictures of about a 3" high layer of rust from a batch. Also, I bend them and weld them and none crack. They are made of very ductile steels.
Merci.

To anyone who does this at home, be sure to do it in a well ventilated area, as running current through salt water generates both hydrogen and chlorine gas. I made the mistake of doing this in my bedroom the first time. Definitely not a fun experience. Great video overall!

Brick Acid is very powerful enough to deoxidise rust it will even soften hardened concrete from construction tools like trowels shovel's etc
Thank you! I did nit hear about Brick acid
A drill with a wire brush and you leave it sparkling in 3 minutes...
In fact, a drill with a wire brush will not remove rust as easily as this electrolysis method. Especially with parts with many edges. But you can combine these two methods - first, using electricity, remove the main layer of rust, and then use a metal brush to polish the metal until it shines
what did you do with all the hazardous waste that was generated doing this??
I got rid of it properly
I do horseshoe art and get a lot of nasty used shoes. After getting the crud and old nails out. I use a plastic tote and about 3" of 2% white vinegar with a battery charge on manual. Get a foamy 2-3" layer of rust percolating up from the H.

You need to use the Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda...better than salt or regular baking soda from all accounts...it can be harder to find.
Thank you, but this type of soda won't be available in all countries)
What voltage are you running through it?
I think the adapter reduces the regular voltage to 12V
You need to use a power supply that is not designed as a battery charger. Chargers usually require battery to be hooked up to provide current, otherwise it won't work. A power supply instead is a much better option - 12v, 5A approximately should do the trick. Another thing to mention is a phenomenon known as Hydrogen Embrittlement. This is a result of the electrolysis and the small Hydrogen bubbles forming on the metal. These bubbles sip through the small molecular cracks of the metal, making it more brittle. To mitigate this, the metal should be baked for a few hours on temp of around 200 degrees C, in order to reduce the risk of cracking.
Thank you for such a deep knowledge of the matter!
That's so great! I learned many great tips from your creative videos

We used vinegar to get rust out from a AC cover. Does anyone know if breathing rust is dangerous?
If you repeat the cycle, will it eventually return to original condition?
I doubt this can happen...)) Just leave the wrench in the water for some time and it will return to the original condition. You won't even need electricity for this)
You mean REVERSE the cycle ? Haven't tried that yet...
I would have cleaned it on my bench grinder with a wire wheel, 10 mins. But a good idea all the same.
Thanks for commenting! Yes, a wire wheel would be quicker
I have many unit spana crosion how can clean up fast by using which teknic 😮
This technic is quite effective
Soak in Brick acid & it will come out spotless rins it clean then apply a coat of oil
The rust on this wrench is so old, so I think, just soaking it in acid will not be enough to remove it completely
Well yes it did work, kind of, but a good scrub on a bench grinder or an angle grinder with a wire brush attachment would have given better results in less than a quarter of the time, the method used here is also used for putting anodising coating on metal and galvanising too, you can also use this method to Nickel or copper plate metal. If this guy wanted to retain a black looking finish on the spanner,he could have cleaned it with a powered wire brush as previously stated but then put it into the saltwater solution and turned his transformer on and that would have given that dark finish but a lot neater.
Thanks for your input! ❤️
What are you doing with the remaining liquids?
Just dispose. Someone here proposed to drink it instead of coffee, but I do not think is would be a tasty drink)) (do not try this at home))
Drinking it
Here in California it’s considered hazardous waste.
Sandstrahlen lassen gibt genug Betriebe die so was anbieten.

It depends on how you would preserve it from rust

What voltage?
Normal voltage of a notebook adapter is 12 volts
I'm thinking it would be very wise to remember to unplug it before takilng the items out of the water.
Your input makes sence!
12 volts will tickle a little but it won't knock you on your ass.
Does it work on chrome
I am afraid, no. But you need to consult a specialist before trying

Salt could make chlorine or chlorates. Best to use baking soda or citric acid.
Thank you for your input!
Sodium Carbonate (washing soda) works best.
Yes soda - No acid
Or, just use a wire brush, then wipe with a film of light oil and buff. Much faster.
also, use the correct metals if you use electrolysis... works better.
I would go at something like that with an angle grinder with a wire wheel on it.

Yes, it does! I made a video on that, you can check it out on my channel
This is false. Baking soda and vinegar react with each other, and neutralizes one another. Vinegar itself will be fine enough as a weak acid to remove rust, though it will etch away at your metal that you want to keep.
I have a video on the channel where I use vinegar and citric acid to remove rust and this composition works quite well. You can check it out

just use white vinegar over night without using electric, save power for other uses!
