  • This is my new video how I discovered the amazing power of electricity in removing rust from metal! Rusty metal surfaces can be a real problem, but I think, I solved this problem! In this video I’ll show you how I used an old laptop adapter and some knowledge to get rid of rust from an old metal wrench.
The process of removing rust from metal with the help of electricity is known as "electrolytic rust removal" or "electrolysis rust removal." It works on the principle of using an electric current to reverse the oxidation process that causes rust.
Here's what you'll see in this video:
🔌 Setting up the rust removal station: I’ll guide you through my the simple setup process.
💡 Understanding the science: Learn the science behind how electricity can tackle rust.
🛠️ Tools and materials: I’ll show the essentials I used for this electrifying project.
🔋 Electrolysis in action: Watch as I demonstrate the complete rust removal process step by step.
✨ Reveal the results: See the incredible transformation as the rust disappears before your eyes!
Electrolytic rust removal is effective for removing even deep-seated rust without damaging the underlying metal. It's a relatively gentle and non-abrasive method that is particularly useful for restoring antique tools, automotive parts, and other metal items.
⚡However, it's important to follow safety precautions when working with electricity and chemicals, and the process may take some time depending on the severity of the rust.
Don't miss out on this simple solution on how to remove rust from metal! Subscribe for more amazing home renovation DIY hacks and tricks! ⚡🔧👋

Steel is refined iron....not chemically different to a significant extent. In the process of cleaning a steel strip, it is first pickled in acid (Hydrochloric or Sulfuric) then cleaned with alternating polarity. Example :Cathodic, Anotic, Cathodic, Anodic, Cathodic in a mostly Baking Powder bath (Sodium Carbonate). This has the combined effect neutralizing the pickling acid and providing ionization that conducts the electrical current.

You can also boil a rusty tool in distilled water. The rust turns black (ferric oxide). Card off the loose material and spray with vinegar and allow to rust and boil again. Repeat three or four times and you now have rust resistant bluing like a firearm. (Rust bluing process). It looks nice😊

    Some suggestions:
More safety surrounding your electrical equipment
Attach a metal rod on your cathode side and resist submerging the wire so you can reuse the charger's wire.
State the advantage of electrolysis. One of them being that it blues the metal and thus mitigates rust from forming as easily. This does not happen with a vinegar bath or power tool rust removal methods.

You need to use a power supply that is not designed as a battery charger. Chargers usually require battery to be hooked up to provide current, otherwise it won't work. A power supply instead is a much better option - 12v, 5A approximately should do the trick. Another thing to mention is a phenomenon known as Hydrogen Embrittlement. This is a result of the electrolysis and the small Hydrogen bubbles forming on the metal. These bubbles sip through the small molecular cracks of the metal, making it more brittle. To mitigate this, the metal should be baked for a few hours on temp of around 200 degrees C, in order to reduce the risk of cracking.

Well yes it did work, kind of, but a good scrub on a bench grinder or an angle grinder with a wire brush attachment would have given better results in less than a quarter of the time, the method used here is also used for putting anodising coating on metal and galvanising too, you can also use this method to Nickel or copper plate metal. If this guy wanted to retain a black looking finish on the spanner,he could have cleaned it with a powered wire brush as previously stated but then put it into the saltwater solution and turned his transformer on and that would have given that dark finish but a lot neater.
