  • Are you curious about how a Can-Am Spyder handles? Curious if others steer the Spyder the same way? In this video I cover how the Spyder feels, handles, and the way I ride my Spyder F3. I also cover a topic that I hear and see a lot in discussions; some people say their Spyder "sways" back and fourth on the road. I have yet to experience this, but talk about 3 things that may cause your Spyder to wander on the road when driving.
Whether a seasoned rider converting from two wheels to three wheels, or a new rider who hasn't rode on a motorcycle before, the Can-Am Spyder is a motorcycle that is designed with everyone in mind. Easy to balance, easy to shift, and easy to steer are three things the Spyder does well.
    I GO OVER:
    How it feels
    How I prefer to steer
Picking a line to ride in
The "Nanny" and how it affects steering
How the tire reacts to road changes
Be sure to subscribe, like, and ring that bell so you can learn everything about the Spyder. Your support helps make these videos and future ones possible.

I have put on more than 30,000 miles on Harley Trikes and rode a couple Can Am Spyders and the Spyder is MUCh MUCh easier to steer.
Last Christmas (2022) I rode a Can Am Ryker 100 miles home to give to our son who used to ride motorcycles until his stroke four years ago. I think the Ryker is perfect for him since he can no longer operate a hand clutch or foot shift. The Ryker is the most fun I've had on ANY motorcycle since I had to give up two wheeled motorcycles due to my wife's many health issues.

I have Parkinson's Disease and one of the big problems with that is balance issues. I am still able to ride my motorcycle but there will come a day when I can't. This looks like a great replacement that I will still be able to ride when I can no longer safely ride my two wheel motorcycle. Thank you for the video it answers my questions about how it turn and if it leans in the turns. Also how it feels to ride it.

Thank you for the comment and sharing as well. I really do try to make videos that answer things that I think people want to know and put a lot of thought into them. Hearing that I helped answer some of your questions and what you said means a lot to me so thank you!!!!! I am about to give you a long comment but I value that you took time from your day to reach out to me, so I hope you don't mind it!
I like what Can-Am / BRP does for wounded soldiers and people with disabilities and is one reason I like to support them. They have a lot of ways to adapt the motorcycle for all sorts of needs. I have seen wheelchair connections and holders, custom changes to the controls on the handlebars, and other items that were made to solve problems that weren't easily solved otherwise. For some people, riding their bike was/is a stress relief and a way to "get away" from things going on. I couldn't imagine not being able to ride anymore, I have went stir crazy waiting on my Spyder to be fixed currently and can't wait to get it back! (it's been 2 months now!) So my heart goes out to you when you said that "there will come a day when I can't" Hopefully when you try or buy a Spyder that will no longer have to be a thought for you.
I do recommend to you that you reach out to a Spyder dealership and see if they are having a "customer ride along" or "test ride" where you can actually go and experience what they are like. This will probably help you more than anything as far as questions concerning ease of use and balance. I would also say to do it before anything gets worse for you because they are different than riding 2 wheels and I wouldn't want you to be in an unknowingly unsafe condition.
For anyone else reading this comment, balancing a motorcycle is an issue with a lot of people and the Spyder is a big help in that aspect. I am fortunate not to have any issues but understand that there are a lot of people that do and the older I get, it will become an issue too for me and my wife as well. For anyone that is thinking of no longer riding due to this, I wish they would at least look at the Spyder's before stopping riding and actually try one. It is very impressive how much they have eliminated/improved the balancing issues. You still feel the joys of a motorcycle, not as much as a 2 wheel, but as close as you can get on 3 wheels. It does have plenty of power and get up and go. I personally love the way it looks and I think it is sporty as well. I hope to see more of them being rode!
Thank you again for the comment and whether or not you subscribed, I appreciate the time you took to do so!

Another video of great tips and info. I think I figured out quickly on the 90-10 and had been doing it without thinking about it. As you mentioned, the throttle hand should stay true so best not to use as much force to turn with it. Cool tips and looked like fun even filming this!

Thank you for the support! There is a lot to think about when purchasing which is tough! If you are planning to do long trips with a passenger, then consider looking at the RT models (ultimate comfort for 2up riding). If you are doing solo trips but want to be able to have a passenger sometimes and still be comfortable then consider the F3. If your looking for sporty, fast, and fun still look at the F3. The motor, frame, and mileage are the same for both models. Hope this helps and be safe the first few test rides, it's different than a 2 wheel motorcycle but YOU are still the bumper if something goes wrong!

Something to add is if you are tall like me (6’5”) the f3 is the go. I don’t fit as comfortable on the RT. My f3s as the longest reach for my feet fitted and long reach bars. The f3 can be tailored to suit most people with the factory adjustments. The spyder tracks beautifully like the man said

I am roughly 5'11 and the RT foot position was almost too close and uncomfortable. You are right on the money about the F3 is a good fit for all with a little adjustment. Anyone 6' or more won't fit well on the Ryker either.

Thank you for your video. I have test driven a Spyder on two occasions but at the time decided not to buy. Now after owning a Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager for about 11 years, I've decided to move on by selling the Kawasaki. I don't want to give up riding so I'm looking at a Spyder. I know there is a but to unlearn from the 2-wheel ride and somethings to learn for the 3-wheel ride. I've watched a lot of people review their Spyder and as you would expect most are glowing in their praise but few if any give any of the riding/steering/driving tips that you have in this video. I am hoping to test drive an RS SM5 soon. I hope I remember all of your tips.

Hello Roger and thank you so much for the comment as i set out for my channel to help others with things i wanted to know or see people wanting to know. I dont want to sound bossy and "you need to do this and that", but want to give you some advice that i hope helps. I dont recommend buying an RS as the engine is no longer supported much and lacks in power. It is a 998cc. I think you would be greatly dissapointed within a year or two, and probably spend more money trying to fix the issues that come with the age of it now. If you want used, i would at least find a 1330 engine. The seating position, power, and improvements over the old RS models is noticeable. When you go to test ride, try your best to set aside the 2 wheel riding thoughts because i had to. It is made different and rides different but is something that you dont have to worry about balance, has plenty of power and is comfortable and the RT is like a Cadillac on the road, smooth and comfy! It is easy to get used to and the brakes you adapt to quickly. I really wanted a manual when i first looked and was like maybe ill wait. I was so glad that that did not stop me. I have gotten to where i love the semi-automatic and think now that i dont ever want to go back to a manual again. I dont want fully automatic like a ryker, but love the semi-automatic now. I hope this helps some because the RS models are not the same as the newer ones and i would not have bought one if it was an RS. Spyders have been awesome to help those with disabilities, riding issues, new riders, etc. and to me are so much fun and safe as well. Please try a semi-automatic if you get a chance, you may be suprised and the resale value is more as well because more people are able to ride it. Sorry for the long comment but wanted to be openly honest as i felt like doing so will help you the most.

@@MOABMAN Thanks for your comments and useful tips. I hadn't given a lot of thought to the issues you raised - I guess that comes with knowledge and experience. As I 'm just shy of 70 I don't expect to be doing that much riding but I want to do so in comfort and with some degree of safety. When I test rode the Spyder years ago it was an RT with the semi auto. I love the auto change down as you close off the throttle. I have a 650 scooter with CVT and a manual option so I'm sort of familiar with the "flappy paddle" transmission. There are a few RTs on the market here but they're a bit outside my budget so I guess I'll wait and see what comes on the market as the weather warms up (I live in Australia). Thanks again for your advice.

They have to assemble the bike some when new so you never know if they skipped the alignment. I went to Berts Mega Mall when I first bought it. Always ask first before going somewhere, some have some and some don't. It is the best way to align though.
You can also go on BRP website and look for dealers near you. Those dealers are probably going to have that type of alignment capabilities. Hope this helps!

It is a little different than 2 wheels. They are a lot of fun though. The RT is a top notch touring bike. For the video I did over exaggerate movements so you could see how it handles, at higher speeds your not having to crank the handle bars that far and it is assisted steering. I was so skeptical when I bought mine, years of riding 2 wheels and it was just different. I welcome technology and I am so glad I tried one out, I will never go back to 2 wheels and haven't regreted the purchase. The hardest part to get use to is the brakes. Approach them carefully, make sure your in control and stay safe, then drive through it and leave them in the past. When you realize how small they are and how silly it was to worry about it, you become a better person! As a motocyclist you live to ride another day!
