Dang Jay, your monitor preferences are spot on. No one else mentioned fake bezelness and crap buttons/controls.
No kidding. That's one of the most annoying things about modern monitors. If you regularly have to switch back and forth between different presets because you use the same monitor for gaming and editing, it's so goddamn annoying to fiddle around with the unseen buttons.
My LG monitor drove me nuts, because there was no manual mode to stay on the DVI or HDMI, regardless what was plugged into the other port. For example, I was setting up mini pcs so I used empty HDMI port , but then the stupid monitor would immediately switch away when the mini pc would reboot, just EXACTLY the time when I needed it to stay on that screen because I was trying ot access BIOS. Of course the other issue is placing the buttons in hidden places, plus the completely illogical configuration options which button does what.
Right now my current monitor has a little joystick, which I prefer over 4-5 buttons in a row.
@@Neanderthal75 I didn't even know that was a thing with monitors... I'm glad both the ones I'm using don't function that way. Not sure how they give priority, but user switching to an active input seems to retain the highest priority on mine.
I think this format of video is very helpful. Even if you didn't find the "budget king" to show us - you did show what to look out for (and how to check) a poor preforming monitor. Thank you guys!
thing is they all bang for bucks actually, but doesnt mean ones doesnt present inferior, i just simply dont know how they sound
Hey brother praying for your health and your family
So far Jay's looking good, we need to keep him and his family in our thoughts.

What happen??
@@landofsyn2980AFAK he has some sort of health problem that has been going on for a month now I think that he hasn't fully disclosed on part that he and his doctors didn't know exactly what it was.
lol what?
Love the cheap product reviews, it's always entertaining. Hope you're doing well jay.
Yea I hope he does well too, I know he said he didn't want to get a lot of tips on what to do regarding his health, but the amount of positive reactions for the Turkey Tail mushrooms regarding cancer, it is by no means bad to eat even though you might not have cancer. Many people didn't even have to get radiation treatments because it dissapeared so fast. Turkey tail mushroom does a lot more positive than that but haven't been studied that much. But have been used in China for at least 2000 years.
Jay looks great in those blue checkers shirt. Black and grey can be boring at times.
Please, youtube is not your personal erofanfiction vlog
@@G_de_Coligny They are just complimenting Jay, And I think that's very nice of them.
100% serious that is the first thing I noticed when I clicked the video.
@@G_de_Coligny he/she wasn't. I'm a straight dude and the first thing I noticed was that he wasn't wearing the usual black shirt. I even commented on it before i saw this comment. I've never seen Jay wear anything but black or grey.
Well, that give us an idea of the level of understanding for sarcasm/jokes on the interweb.
I suppose i will have to stick to fart jokes and slapstick comedy…
Hey Jay and team, hope all you guys are doing alright!
Loving the series of impulse buys and el-cheapo tech! Please keep them coming as long as you like, love your overviews and semi-reviews of this not often reviewed tech
I am glad you are doing more of this kind of stuff. I never know what to tell anyone about the lower end of the market.
I'm always at the low end of the market, so have no problem telling others about PC tech that I have actual, everyday, experience of.
I feel like it's always hit or miss with the Amazon Basics products in general. Also, I've been always happy with the quality of AOC monitors. I have 2 of their low end gaming monitors for work and a curved 4K panel for gaming. They're still reasonably priced, even in the high end category.
I had (well technically still have) an AOC monitor which has an amazing samsung-designed panel, but the back-end and user controls are a fricken mess.
It was kind of a mixed bag. Certainly useful for many people, but I wouldn't call it "good".
It did hold up well. I kept hoping it would die so i'd have an excuse to replace it. But eventually I just replaced it without an excuse. I guess i have a spare backup screen now.
I do visual work though, and I'm _very_ glad I finally replaced it. But I wouldn't call it a 'bad' monitor exactly.
@@kathrynck Come to think of it, "This product is not bad exactly. It's just you'll want to replace it, will look for an excuse, and if you won't find it - will eventually replace it after months\years of tolerating it" ain't exactly a great product endorsement :)
I hate haveing to tolerate stuff but then get rid of it, guess edging like that is just not my thing, suppose I'm not alone in this feeling.
It's the opposite for me with AOC. My monitor barely lasted a year so I'm avoiding them now.
The AOC portable monitors back in the 2010's where a bloody mess with displaylink. Glad the tech is basically useless now with USB-C onboard with Displayport alt mode making plenty of portable monitors cheap and effective then they use to be.
@@mangatom192 A shame to hear that. :(
Which model was it? I've bought all 3 of them in 2019 and have never had issues. The 2 I use for work are 24,5 inch standard gaming monitors and are not too different from the Amazon one shown in the video and the one I use for gaming is a 49-inch 4K AOC Agon monitor that is better than the MSI one I had previously.
10:34 Inverse ghosting (overdrive overshoot) still very much affects the _previous_ frame, but the pixel values are being overshot and instead of resetting, you get ghosting in the form of an _inverse image_ (a dark object leaves a bright afterimage).
I bought three 27" Asus VA27EHE 75hz monitors 2 years ago, and have been really happy with them for the $130-140 I paid for them. The biggest complaint is the fact that the buttons are on the right side rear of the monitors, which makes it hard to access them in my triple wide setup. Other than that, they've been flawless for the money.
TY for the affordable product reviews 🙂
The lumberjack shirt looks really good.
But my favorite is Jay in the white admiral's uniform from the World on Warships commercial. It looks so cool.
FYI work my grandson on a NZXT system for Christmas gift. The grandsons are the gamers. Built some of our own configurations. We waited and NXZT then dropped prebuilt specials that the grandson felt were close to what he wanted. In fact I fell better system over all now that he has used it for some time. He is happy, and I am happy.
Did want him to build one to gain the experience. I stated a very only time ago building kits system purchase for The Byte Shop. Involved soldering iron to assemble the kit systems.
Thank you Jay
Fantastic video as always my friend 💯
I've been using some AOC 4K monitors for design work and have been very happy with them for the price.
Blues lookin good Jay! Hope all is well and youre feeling better.
So glad you're doing this, I'm so burned out on "new tech" that I've all but stopped watching most tech channels. Thanks Jay
Same. I got burned out on tech vids around the time of all the LTT drama. This video was refreshing though.
Got to admit, I've always found front facing buttons more logical. Now I don't mind joystick controls.... Except when we are talking about a dual or triple monitor setup, the joystick is on the rear, and the monitors are placed side by side (then at least one monitor will be a real PIA to get at the controls).
I have the msi mag27qrfqd or whatever the number is as my center panel for this reason. The joystick is easy to reach from the front, works a treat.
@@johnricharddowling3276I can't say that about my pair of Gigglebyte G27Q's - real pia to get to the control on the left monitor to turn it off (now worse as they are on a tall stand and situated above my G34WQC-A). But the LG 24MP59G's I had prior to that setup was fine as the joystick was in the middle at the bottom (I'm likely going to make VESA mounts on a 3D Printer and put those back into service above the GG34WQC-A for that reason).
@@nukedathlonman sounds like a good set up. I've triple 27" wall mounted, the 2 side monitors are Asus and the joystick is awkward to reach on the left.
Got this monitor when it first came out and Amazon sold it for 50 bucks. Ordered 6 of them to replace 19-inch 900p monitors in my office. Have been working great so far.
Great video as usual 😀 Thank you Jay!
Thank you for the video Jay.
I find it refreshing that you WANT to and ARE reviewing some less expensive items. KUDOS.
Also it is refreshing to hear you say: "Oops, I should have shopped a bit more" with regards to this monitor being less good than the "cheaper" and "better"-ish vanilla AOC panel. Again KUDOS.
The monitor? Does what it says on the tin. That is that and fine by me.
VERY glad I can pick up a USEFUL monitor for less than a 100 bucks now and not have to worry about much of anything.
Peaceful Skies.
Great video as always Jay.
Digging the blue plaid!
Your way of talking is just so . . . Incredible. Direct. Fresh. Chill. Informative. Friendly and welcoming. It is no wonder you and your team are hugely successful and so admired. YT is hard, but please never stop.
Thank you for another great video 👍
For PC builds starting from the very beginning, from scratch, I think monitor target performance (resolution, refresh, colors, brightness) and the target amount of total system power that people want to run are under-weighted in the designing. I know I did so, too, unfortunately.
Kindest regards, neighbours and friends.
Hi Jay, As that saying goes, "Just what I've been looking for." This will be a great addition to my new test bench. Using an articulating wall mount, I'll place it on the wall behind my workbench. I like that it has front-screen controls like the old-school monitors. Please have more of these "Look what I found" videos. I'll buy one just so my wife will again blame you for my PC purchases.
i love this type of content, is there a place we can send product links for review?
Screen tearing happens because the output buffer on the video output port of the PC is updated with a new frame while the current/old frame was being streamed to the display device.
There is a very simple fix for this fun phenomenon, 2-buffer output. While 1 buffer is streamed to the monitor, all writing to the output buffer is sent to the other buffer. At the end of frame, the output switches to the 2nd buffer, putting all writes to the 1st buffer.
Oh Jay how I agree about the front facing control buttons.
Nice monitor. Shame that it is Amazon, over here in Europe, I have had so many issues with Amazon, that I try to avoid them. Bol on the other hand does have a great returns policy, but their products are often more expensive, slightly.
Jay could you do a system for audio? Recording studios and production machines? Mac's are expensive but they work. I'm looking to build a windows machine that can handle audio but not break the bank. right now im having a hard time with dealing with noise from the interface... and the same interface is dead silent on windows.
Love your videos. Just wondering: Do you have a new mic amplifier or something? Dunno, sounds there is a bit too much amplification? Just my 2 cents :p Keep em coming!
thank you!
Jay you are looking great! That shirt looks really nice
Thanks, more please.
I really need to try an IPS panel I've only owned VA & TN panels, currently my main is a 27" Dell 1080P 144Hz TN I bought on amazon in 2019, also has Freesync & Gsync works correctly, it has the best color accuracy i've seen for a TN but I'm sure IPS is better especially viewing angles.
Dang, flannel looks good on Jay!
I'm always trying to build entry level gaming PCs,, budget 600-700 dollars.
I live by a Micro Center.
What would you build with that kind of budget JTC?
hey jay how do like the new nvidia app they launched
Seems great for a secondary display. I would defiantly mount it and not use the base it came with.
You should do the ASRock Phantom PG27F15RS1A 27"... I have been wondering if that monitor is good or not. I don't mind the 27 inch and it being 1080p resolution. I often wondered about the grey to grey, motion blur, overall latency and etc.
AOC is one of not many brands that still include VGA and it's cool actually. You could use it for any retro things and there are adapters to VGA that cheaper than adapters to HDMI or DP.
Adaptive sync is baked in DP specifications
i had no idea decent 1080p monitors were so cheap now, even with higher refresh rates. the last time i bought a 1080p panel was in late 2017. just a basic 24" 1080p 60Hz monitor from BenQ with an IPS panel and i paid 150 EUR for it. it also died last year, lol
I bought a Viewsonic 1080p IPS 144hz in 2018 for 199 and it still works great, you just had to look. Some companies still thought it was 2014 and they could sell 1080p60 LCD monitors for a ton of money
Hey jay I know this has nothing to do with the monitor but I am looking for a water block for my xfx rx 6600 8gb swift 210 gpu. I only seem to find the xfx 6600 xt
Whats your opinion on SCEPTRE monitors? Looking at a 27in curved 75hz.
I rather enjoyed the way vga plugs worked, they always fit in so perfectly and never felt like it was gonna fall out, but then it also had screws usually. Awesome
I got the $109 24" 144Hz 1080P AOC. Works well enough for my limited gaming needs. But it's overkill for office tasks. My second screen is a $10 Asus 24" 1080P I got from Goodwill. Ten bucks is a good price for a basic monitor.
The BenQ Mobiuz 24" 165Hz IPS goes on sale regularly. Real nice panel when it's on sale at around $170CAD.
Use the ghosting pattern in test UFO, which is kind of different from the FPS pattern that you were showing
i got a Sceptre 32" 144Hz 1440p IPS monitor from Amazon in january 2022, direct from Sceptre's Amazon store. It was $250 but worth it.
Have you looked at any of the koorui monitors? They look like a good deal but seem a little sketchy to me.
Hi Jay, how are you doing? What about the colonoscopy? Do you have a results yet?
I really enjoy this content.
It has a real use if it goes on sale. Or if others dont have VGA.
For that price, I'd pick one up just to have a spare monitor for troubleshooting and emergency purposes.
It's perfect for that.
Hope you can review the others to see if the lower price is for a better monitor overall.
the second you start changing the default brightness, it's no longer color accurate. you'll need to calibrate the Red Green Blue setting with a colorimeter or just eye it to make sure you get rid of grading. Especially cheap monitors.
What I find missing from reviews in YT is Lenovo monitors. Are they not being imported in the US? I am asking because I am eyeing Lenovo Legion Y27h-30 IPS that might have the same panel as a gigabyte Q27 the same KVM and better power over usb C, but calibration might be waaay off.
Almost bought one myself off ebay. Glad i passed on it. I got an lg 29 inch 2k boarder-less used but in mint condt. from an ebay auction for $59 and free shipping. The monitor went at the auction end for $140, but the buyer crapped out, so i was next in line and won.
II have an AOC 24B2XH for my 2nd monitor - cost $80, 1080p 75hz, perfect 2nd monitor for my setup! My primary monitor is a 1440p 165hz one
Still rocking the 1080p 75hz ones I got for $80. Only had to replace a capacitor on the one I had for 6 years.
Bought a Koorui 27" 160hz 1440p monitor last december for about $100 which is a steal no noticible ghosting or any issues at all.
How does this compare to Walmart's Onn brand monitor? They're pretty bad too.
We only have the Alienware 3225qf available for purchase, MSI 321URX & ASUS PG32UCDM are not available in the USA.
Response time is measured gray to gray because that's the worst case transition for an LCD panel.
The crystals in an LCD rotate a bit whenever the panel needs to display a different shade. To get it to rotate more (like from white to black) they have to move more. However, to get them to do that, you need to apply higher voltage to the crystals. That makes them rotate faster! It turns out that the slowest transitions for an LCD aren't white to black, it's gray to gray, when difference between the starting and the end voltage is quite low and thus the pixels change more lazily.
And that's why the panel speed for an LCD is measured for a certain gray to gray transition.
I'm looking for 4k monitor but between brightness.. ghosting.. color gambit ... Idk what is good or bad...
Nice shirt and you are looking really good in them 😍
can you try out the ARZOPA portable monitor?
I don't think I've seen you wear a flannel, but that looks really good on you.
The Gray to Gray is measured on an LCD panel because Black to Black can be faked by quickly overshooting to above 100% and then falling back to 0%. The result is not useful for a monitor that really needs to generate fine variations in shades of gray.
Another reason is Vertical Alignment (VA) LCD panels are slow to transitioning between two dark shades, say from 5% to 25% brightness.
Work monitor, security camera monitor. Second monitor fir chat in livestreams, light panel for photography?
i'm 50/50 on AOC. my 24G2SE barely lasted two years before the panel slowly started shitting itself. meanwhile my old, third hand 23" Dell S2340L is still going strong after a capacitor replacement.
I got the USB 3.0 version of the aoc monitor. its not that bad. plug and play type.
I got 3 MSI G274QPF 27" 170hz 1440 IPS monitors for $160 each at Costco they are currently $220 these are the non - QD monitors. The -QD screens go for about $80+ more.
Throw a little bit more on it, I have now my 3rd AOC monitor and verry happy with it...started with : AOC 24G2U - Full HD IPS Gaming Monitor - 24 inch (144hz) works like a charme then the AOC C32G2ZE - Full HD VA Curved 240Hz Gaming Monitor - 32 Inch (that went to my daughter she has a better GC) and now I have the AOC U34G3XM - Ultrawide QHD Gaming Monitor - 144hz - 34 inch gameganger for me yup I now i'm old and play WOW but sheesh love this one....for our family and yup we are on a budget we love AOC but you need the higher hz
How long have you had it?
Oh snap, Jay is wearing a new shirt I wonder if came up with a new design shirts that are button ups
Monitor specs always confuse me. If it has a pixel response time of say 1ms then that is 1000 per second or 1kHz.
So what is the other Hz value for ?
12:47 The list of redeeming qualities makes it sound pretty much the opposite of the video title. I'm a bit confused of what the video's message is. Is it decent and ok to buy or is it, as the title suggests, a product that should be avoided?
10:50 uhh what do I do if I have blur infront and behind the ufo?
Thanks for checking this out and giving a review Jay! BTW thats a very nice shirt, a great color on you!
This would be a good monitor to try out that "transperent screen" thing you once failed with.
I myself am still looking fo a monitor that doesn't cost a fortune to do that.
I learned some time ago that the so called 'Amazon Basics' deals a lot of times were ripoffs. I guess you could argue that the benefits you get from from the return policy make the extra 20 over the 79 dollar model work as a cheap extended warranty, but they really effed up what could have been a good deal. My first LCD TV\PC monitor was a 22 inch AOC I bought in 2008 and it worked great. I had it for several years and before I had to sell it at a pawn shop. I agree with you on the button placement, I like it best when they're on the front.
AmazonBasics is just a rebrand of whatever OEM is willing to bid at their margins.
If you know who makes what, often you *can* get a good deal, but it does involve research.
that folder on the desktop.. 🤣
why no overclock. if it is the same panel as the 100hz one is should be able.
I still have a number of computers that have VGA as their 2nd video output, having that is honestly still really nice.
his is a great example of taking the time to look a little closer and further.
Thanks for the review and info about what is and isn't worth spending money on.
Regarding adaptive Sync - as I understand (I may be wrong though) it's a version of sync technology that works with both G-Sync and Freesync, so the monitor should work fine with both AMD and Nvidia cards. Hence adaptive, it adapts to your system.
Other way around. VESA Adaptive sync is the underlying tech. It's hardware agnostic, adaptive doesn't refer to "adapting to your system", but adapting to the framerate, the core functionality of any Adaptive sync implementation. Freesync and G-Sync are both built upon Adaptive sync, basic Freesync and G-Sync _compatible_ are practically just the base Adaptive sync implementation rebranded.
@@SaltyMaud Thanks for the clarification!
I think it would be really interest to see a comparison of the Amazon minor VS the AOC branded panels. I wonder if they are basically the same or if the Amazon panel has something that makes it worth the price.
Could you do a video comparing the difference between IPS, VA, and TN?
In short, IPS for gaming, VA for TV/media, TN for budget.
I suppose that monitor wouldn't be bad for, say, home or small business use -- typing documents, filling out spreadsheets, video calls, e-mail, watching YT videos, and so forth.
Interesting thing is that I watched this on my XP-PEN Artist 22 2nd Gen graphics drawing tablet that's connected to my Acer Aspire 5 laptop (the laptop's screen is duplicated on the graphics drawing tablet). 😊
BINGO!
I have a couple of old "Business PC's" cheap from Amazon. (HP + Dell) Got them for ~$120 each a few years ago. I needed some Win7 machines for my business software. THIS monitor or the vanilla AOC one are perfect for that use case. VGA connector and 24' -27' for ~$100 for Excel and Word will be an actual upgrade from the 19' VGA monitors those systems came with. Glad to see some cheap, useful hardware reviews. Do not always care to drop 7 grand on a 5k monitor just for spreadsheets.
My gaming rig though.... I can be picky. :)
Peaceful Skies.
Got an Acer Nitro XF234Y IPS 165Hz for around $120 new at Best Buy, great little 3rd monitor
I got a KTC 2k 170hz for 180eur, I'll see how it does but I'm skeptical
I'm confused. Should I avoid it, as the title says, or should I get it (as a second panel or for a kid)?
Thats just older version rebranded of which I had. Same spec identical costing around 90 euros new served me well for years but yea its crap
I use the Onn 1440p 165hz VA monitor for $150 and its perfectly fine for me. Picture quality is good in my opinion.
"It displays an image, what more do you want". Thanks, this made my day 😂
You should do a comparison test with the AOC version
11:27 Aren't progressive panels drawn line by line and not interlaced?
I trashed my LG OLED monitor when trying to remove the matte finish on it (the glass underneath shattered because I was a little to impatient..).
So now a very similar model like this one is my main monitor for now.
Small disclaimer: I've done several removals of matte layers before and did my research. It was going well but the adhesive that was in the middle hadn't loosen up enough yet so it shattered the actual 'glass' panel underneath by me pulling to hard.
Yes I know, Big Oof. R.i.p $800 XD
For european customers the amazon links in description lead to 75 Hz and 165 Hz monitors.
anyone know how to get that Origin wallpaper Jay has?
Where can I get that wallpaper from Origin
