10 Worst Lord of The Rings Journalist Opinions - Rings of Power Amazon Prime TV Show

  • Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power had many awful journalistic pieces from Tolkien scholars and academics written. But the top 10 spam for Amazon Prime's latest tv show are a whole other level of grasping at straws. LOTR is a deep, intricate piece of work but when it comes to the Rings of Power show being written out of appendices, it seems the journalists don't have much to talk about.

8:46 Tolkien, a male writer in a male-dominated era, literally had a female character turn the tides of one of the most important battles fought in the entire Third Age. He intentionally wove that into his story as something not even the most powerful males (neither man nor elf) could accomplish. An elf lord (Glorfindel) who was powerful enough to kill a balrog could not defeat the Witch King, _only_ a woman could (with the help of Merry) because Tolkien wanted to illustrate that even the most insignificant or seemingly powerless people can play integral roles in saving an entire world from darkness.
When taking the time period Tolkien was writing in into account, I cannot fathom why people claim he had poor female representation - it's ridiculous!!
Then you get the story of Beren and Luthien, where the _female_ is the hero of the story who has to save her lover (a warrior no less) from captivity.
Tolkien's female representation isn't forced or cringe (maybe that's what these people want???) but heck, this was back in the 50s when housewives could be electroshocked or even lobotimised for being unhappy in their home situation!! He had _no societal or cultural requirements_ to give women important roles in his texts, and he still did!
It really frustrates me that these people don't give Tolkien more credit for the incredible female representation he _did_ include which is arguably a lot more genuine than a lot of the forced trash we see in stories these days Y_Y

@@Blah3210 - I think they want representation only for the sake of representation with no purpose behind it.
Which is how you end up with them using a black female actress portraying an actual historical Viking ruler (the real ruler was a pale-skinned male) _instead of_ showrunners going to any effort at all to adapt the many incredible true stories about powerful historical African women.
They only want _token_ diversity for the sake of diversity, they don't want to actually attempt to adapt any of Africa's incredible history (or the folktales and mythological stories from those regions) and honestly it seems to me like they genuinely don't care about any of that!
Why adapt stories about African folks and African regions when you can just force them into white roles to fill your diversity quota? that's way easier. sigh.
Sorry to rant, it just really bugs me. I'd love to see adaptations of historical and mythological stories from Africa!!!

@@Vexarax There is a purpose behind it. Female representation is only notable if it's front-and-center and subverts gender roles. Similarly black representation is mainly used to replace roles that would typically be cast for white people - even when dealing with historical figures as you've pointed out. The goal is subversion and deconstruction.

Overall your point is correct, but you pointed out a small detail that everyone seems to get wrong. Luthien did not "go save beren from captivity." They were BOTH captured and they worked together to escape. I have even heard people describing the story as her breaking in to Morgoth's castle and stealing the Silmaril herself and that Beren was a dumb, handsome, and useless.

    1. Morbidly obese elves.
    2. Gandalf was the bad guy all along.
    3. Sauron was misunderstood socialist trying to save the world.
    4. Orcs are the actual underdog heroes, simply misunderstood born into slavery and fighting oppression.
    5. Any and all credit for anything a male did, go to women who are the real heroes.
    6. That there in fact no dwarf men, they are all women.
    7. X female hero is the chosen one, more powerful than all the wizards, dragons, Sauron, and Tom Bombadil combined.
    8. Male kings bad. All of them. Yes, even that one.
    9. Middle Earth is Misogynist.
    10. This series will be artificially propped up to be made to be so much more epic, important, all encompassing to make the other trilogies moot by comparison, with non-existant plots/characters inserted to undermine the original content and Tolkien's writings.
I am sure there is more. Feel free to add.

Then they make Harold Lauder, the rape-y asshole who is barely in the book and deservedly dies in an explosion, the focus. It speaks to the morality of “current year” writers when they shine the spotlight on people who are hungry for power for its own sake be it Ms Marvel, Rey, or Scarlet Witch, and call them “heroes”. The myths and tales of antiquity aren’t just things old, dead white men wrote down. They were cautionary tales and morality plays.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If amazon really wanted a human-elf romance then they should have used Mithrellas and Imrazor. Their story is so interesting and it's actually canon. Mithrellas would have been absolutely devastated the first time she met Imrazor because her best friend Nimrodel just died. I would have loved to see that. Instead we get ocs which doesn't make sense because they've already compressed the timeline because they don't have the time to give us all the characters and yet they have the time to squeeze in original characters?

    • @adde27
      @adde27 Před 2 lety

I am not sure we can really call that "canon". Elf-Man couples are extremely rare, and each have had a profound effect on the fate of Middle-Earth (I needn't list them, we all know). It is said to be the "tradition" of the house of Dol Amroth to claim an Elvish ancestor, but this seems wildly out of place for a number of reasons:
      1) as stated, Elf-Man couples are rare and have a profound effect: we hear nothing of this sort about Mithrellas and Imrazor.
      2) the children would've had the choice of the Half-Elves, but this is not recorded anywhere.
      3) It goes against the customs of the Eldar: Mithrellas not only leaving her husband, but also her children, behind to never be seen again? Elves married for life (and the life after reincarnation too) and child-rearing was typically the happiest time of their lives.
We can rule out that Imrazor raped her, since Elves can voluntarily die in situations like that, but we should probably look at it more of a tradition, rather than a facT: similarly, if one is so inclined, compare the Imperial House of Japan's claim/tradition of being descendants of Amaterasu-Omikami.

Since Eärendil (first gen half-elven, like Dior) had to choose, just like Elwing (second gen half-elven), it really seems odd that any hypothetical child of Mithrellas and a Man would not get the same choice.

@@adde27 The Galadriel/Amroth section of Unfinished Tales suggests that Tolkien had several different versions of who Amroth was, and by extension who his people were. That is an additional element of confusion.
I think the evidence provided by Tolkien would also support a more limited view of who got the choice. In this world there would have been plenty of opportunities for mortals and immortals to cross paths. Tolkien only told us about the choice of the "important" ones---the royalty and progeny of the Noldor. There were no reports of Sindar getting together with humans, but there WERE instances of Sindar and humans living in common for centuries, such as in Brethil, and there were other longterm relationships between Elven and human communities such as between Thranduil's people and Laketown. It is possible that the choice of the half-Elven was connected to their contact with the Silmarils or their parents' origin in Aman or their great-grandmother's being a Maia---not just their part-Elvish blood.

But theses people aren't right, they can't relate to anyone, so they require themselves to be REPRESENTED by someone they see as an exact clone of themselves.

And thanks to the new stewardess of gondor implementing her new 20% fountaingaurdess law she saved those poor orc's who wanted to fight sauron from the evil men of gondor who commited all those hate crimes against the orc's of mordor. No wonder Anuminas and the kingdom of numenor fell. They were led by evil men who only see black and white. And like other fans im really excited to see how hot sauron is. Not to mention the origin of the rings. Afterall we all know celebrimbor was a woman and why would a man make rings anyway? Clearly a sign of love and compassion in marriage. Tolkien knew his stuff. Top ten things Amazon will get wrong.
1: Black Elves - they were exclusively white... ffs when they Elves 'awoke' the Sun wasn't created till thousands of years later.
2: Female dwarves should look so much like a male Dwarf as to be indistinguishable.
3: Screwing the timeline to fit 3500 years of the second ages into a time frame that a human woud live through.
4: Wizards didn't arrive until 1000c TA so they should not appear in this series. (Unless you consider a little know writing of Tolkien's where he postulated that the Blue wizards may have arrived much earlier than the other 3)
4: Warrior Galadriel... 'nuff said about that..
5: Elf human relationships.. there were only ever three and there was a reason for it. Something along that line that it was fated that those 3 couples would fall in love.
6: Elrond should be a minor character. At the start of the second age he was still very young, and he wouldn't become the wise law master till much later in the second age. The main Elves focused on should be Gil Galad and Celembrimbor.
7: Same for Galadriel.. her only notable feats during this time are founding the realm of Lorien and accepting the Ring.
8: The white armies of the Numenoreans oppresing the people of Middle Earth inc the black Haradrim. Amazon won't have the balls to put that in the show. Also taking people to be slaves and executing them in praise of Morgoth.
9: Halflings in the second age, the earliest mention of Hobbits is third age. While we may presume they were around before that, they were unknown to men, elves dwarves and ents.
10: Elendil the tall. Can they manage to find an actor who is 7'11" to play Elendil?

People thinking it's okay to introduce your own characters to a finished work that has had several movies and scholar studies done on it is just beyond me. It doesn't surprise me, for anyone that knows the musical Spring Awakening, I once had a woman say that she wants to direct an all female cast of Spring Awakening. You know. A musical about German boys and girls in the late 1800s and how the pressures of society and their parents drown them into a dark lifestyle in which one gets pregnant, one commits suicide, the homosexuality that some express is repressed so deeply that they must be ashamed of their affections and show the struggles of their lives as they try to grow into adults. Not everything has an extended universe or needs an interpretation on it ffs.

Tolkien's world has ample women in it... they just aren't Adventuring into the wilderness to confront Dragons, Goblin hordes, Orc Armies, or giant spiders. A few standouts did exist, like Arwen, Aoewen, and Galadriel and all three of them were strong women. Perhaps not physically, but in personality. In fact, not unlike the final season of Game of Thrones, one of them, dressed like a man killed the Witch King of Angmar... (e.g. got the Kill Shot on the Night King) Tolkien didn't write in a lot of women who were not going to affect the story... in fact, his editor wanted him to split his book into three books because it was already too long. The Lord of the Rings was one book that he then had to split up. Why, then, would he have written in a host of women who weren't going to be adventuring with the rest of the fellowship to solve thr problem? It isn't a failing of the man or the times, it was just a choice for his reality based upon our reality, in fact. Women do not generally go off and become action heroes. They stay home and mind the children. Almost every person who reads these words is on this planet becasue they had a mom who stayed home and made a baby.
