  • Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has released the third trailer on Amazon Prime Video alongside an Entertainment Weekly Exclusive article. But with SDCC starting tomorrow we are getting even more news, and a full trailer from San Diego Comic-Con International.
Does this improve the confidence in JD Payne and Patrick McKay and their desire for a "blank slate" in J. R. R. Tolkien's LOTR rather than a more fleshed-out part of the IP? Or is this Lord of the Rings "based on" tv series another Wheel of Time?

With San Diego Comic Con coming up there will be more LOTR: Rings of Power news (and trailer?) , Wheel of Time panels and a whole host of other news coming. Let alone all the articles that will be vying for access. I hope they have more convincing news than just hobbits like circles though! Are you looking forwards to anything at SDCC, and if not, what WOULD you like to see there? Let me know your thoughts below and as always, thanks for watching :)

There is nothing familiar about the “Tarfoots.” There ungainly feet and shambling gait is completely antithetical to the nimble, quick footed Hobbits. The proto-Hobbit “Tarfoots” seem to be intellectually challenged, bereft of levity, lacking spirit at least that is what can be gleaned from the litany of arbitrary trailers and teasers.

@@MalcomJuliaMorgan Interestingly enough this has happened in a lot of media considered "nerdy." D&D art went from horrid monsters and equally horrifying encounters rs between adventurers - often depicted as workers more than superheroes - to... Butterflies and dancing and singing, a lot of singing and smiles, coupled with a Percy Jackson approach to gods and downgraded to YA sort of approach. Nothing wrong with singing and dancing and such, but it's in the colors used. Even in 4E art where heroes were still depicted almost like superheroes, there was a gravitas to the art of worlds and creatures. In 5e, there is a lot of pastel colors, a lot of watercolor sploshes behind the art...
It says something about the demographic they are trying to aim this to. It's a bit less towards the literary fans or those that enjoyed Peter Jackson's take and more abiut that YA demographic.

Ironically, the canvas was never completely blank -- not even when it came to Numenor -- but the showrunners deliberately corrupted whatever brushstrokes were already painted. For example, Tar-Míriel of Numenor was clearly described as "bright-eyed" and "fairer than silver or ivory", and she was the cousin of Al-Pharazon, who is played by a white actor. Despite this, the showrunners cast a black actress.

    • @gabrielcruz6752
      @gabrielcruz6752 Před rokem +42

The late Numenorean royal family was so obsessed with longevity, a longevity inherited by bloodline, they must have been sickly obsessed with blood purity too. We must remember that Tolkien himself mentioned the obsession with blood purity among the exiled numenoreans.
So, it was impossible that the father of Míriel, Tar Palantir, had the opportunity to have an interethnic marriage, given the huge and dangerous opposition Palantir had at the time, as told in the Silmarillion.
All of this just tells us that Payne and McKay don't give a shit about the last decades of Númenor and the horrible social atmosphere of those years as described in the Silmarillion, an atmosphere which is similar to the last days of the pagan Roman Empire and the age of the Persecution of Christians or the rise of fascism in Germany and the Persecution of the Jews.

A blank canvas implies that you create something from scratch, which is what I totally understand and respect from a creativity perspective. The thing is, they're not using a blank canvas, the canvas is already painted on and they want to "improve" upon it by completely painting over it, but still use the original artist as name of the creator and title as given by the original artist. You can't have both, either create something completely new, without reference to anything existing, or create something using work from the original artist, which requires to stay as close as possible to it as you can.

You quoted the founding fathers - of a colony that only existed because of mass migration from Europe to North America, and only thrived because of a race based system that forcibly moved Africans to North America, which decimated the indigenous populations of the nations it supplanted, and subjected another population to horror and misery - on the evils of migration and diversity. Besides, none of what I've seen so far tells me it's something from the Tolkien universe, If I had seen all these images and trailers without knowing it's from The Rings Of Power, I had never guessed it was something related to The Lord Of The Rings, I showed them to my sister, who is a great fan of Tolkien books, she didn't know anything about The Rings Of Power, and she asked me if it was some new Game Of Thrones series.
I have a feeling they're going to do the same thing they did with The Wheel of Time, they had great books and the story already written, but it seems like they just threw them away and changed everything. I'll be watching your other videos man, I really liked the way you talk.

If that is true, then at least he had the intelligence to realise that he couldn't do it justice. The Godfather, the Name of the Rose and L.A Confidential were other difficult works to adapt, but were, in the end, good adaptations because the core story, the themes and ideas were respected and were translated well onto the screen. The problem is that at the same time they also want the boost from name recognition that comes with writing / creating in an existing universe. The problems is existing universes have existing ruleas - lore, which is the very antithesis of a blank canvas. If you want to create in them its perfectly fine - but you have to adhere to those already existing lore and rules. This can feel indeed limiting but if you threat an existing IP as a blank canvas and ignore the lore you basically destroy it by trying to transform it to something thats your own - Tolkien I think would have used the word "corrupt". If you want a blank canvas you can have one: create your own universe.

Peasant 2: "Oh, these are Hobbit style wheels... they're round ya see, like thar doors. Thats how ya know ya got a Hobbit wheel."
Peasant 1: "Say... that does look a wee better than my square wheels... made by men."

I think you can create something worthwhile that is in the same universe as a given work (i.e. see Knights of the Old Republic). However, taking ESTABLISHED characters, nations, and peoples and completely changing their essense from what the original creator of the work intended is just terrible (i.e. the character assassination of Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi). If they want an original story with "representation", set it in Harad and feature Kamul the Easterling as the big bad, include the Blue Wizards as key protagonists. That could've been awesome and that basically is a blank slate. But polluting established lore is not in the least bit awesome.

They created something different that fit their ideologies and dogma, then slapped on someone else's name on it to try and attract a fanbase because the fanbase for their ideological dogma doesn't exist. Now they're mad at Tolkien fans because the fans caught them on a lie.
At what point, if ever, do these people get introspective and understanding?

I would hope you do a video on this in the near future, because this let's us peer into the mind of Mr. Tolkien.
He was a TRADITIONALIST, specifically when it came to his Catholicism. He had many concerns when the Church started to implement the changes of Vatican 2 Especially, the introduction of English and removal of Latin from the Mass or Novus Ordo.
There is no way in "hell" he would approve one iota of Amazon's Cultural Marxism to his life's work.
By the way the way he never once attended a Novus Ordo mass.

Ahh yes the circular doors of the hobbits are mirrored by their circular wheels. As opposed to humans whose rectangular doors are mirrored by rectangular wheels.

Initially, the "you have not seen what I have seen" exchange between Galadriel and Elrond confused me. Then it hit me. She must have been referring to Elrond's anus, something that he could only have seen for himself with a bit of dedication and a judiciously placed mirror, but one would assume it's something that he wouldn't catch sight of in a mirror or a shop window just walking by. I don't think I'm going to bother with this show. This just isn't on par with Tolkien's standards at all.
