  • Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power from Amazon Prime has been showing 20 minutes of new footage to several fan sites. Although they weren't happy with the comments they received, especially regarding their free trip and gifts, the backlash and fallout are worth investigating. What exactly makes everyone so confident in the show, even if it may not get good until season 3?

There was at least one 'superfan' among them whose content I enjoy, he said that he didn't take money or let himself be influenced by anything.
Even though I believe he's a decent guy and tries to be objective, I think it simply isn't possible to NOT be influenced by a treatment like this. If someone else is being nice and generous to you, you will think more positively of that person and his work, that's just how humans work. It WILL influence you no matter how hard you try to remain objective. You're not going to absolutely trash the cherished ideas of someone who just has been very kind to you for several days.
That's why, for example, an auditor is not allowed to accept any kind of gifts or favors from the client he is auditing that go further than, say, accepting a cup of coffee.

To be fair there were many unhappy fans with his trilogy as some of the changes were quite unnecessary, replacing Glorfindel with Arwen for a single instance, I'm not a Tolkien purist (Dune was more my thing to be honest) but since all this kicked off with Amazon's upcoming crap I find myself being drawn deeper into the lavish world of Middle Earth and I'm going to buy the Silmarillion come payday and maybe just keep going and got all his (and his son's) works.

@@andeeanko7079 Really ?? There are many things wrong with Peter Jacksons trilogy and many things I have critized it for dispite the fact I still mostly enjoy his films. ANY deviation from Tolkiens narrative will upset certain fans and Peter Jacksons films have more than a few of these. And I'm not talking about certain aspects of condensing an 1100 page book into 3 movies which is impossible to do, I'm talking about changes which were entirely unnecessary.
      Arwen instead of Glorfindel
Sam being turned away by Frodo in favor of Gollum
Faramir 'not showing his quality' by taking the hobbits to Osgiliath
      Denethor whole personality
      Sarumans death
Gandalf stating that Sauron 'could not yet take physical form' when he was in fact in a physical form.
Witch King beating Gandalf the White
Most of these are minor and don't really bother me but they all could have been corrected but PJ left them in.
By the time the Hobbit movies came around he clearly didnt care anymore as he butchered the hell out of the story.

@@markoconnor7163 true, you are right about these changes. Still, I absolutely love the films and have watched the behind the scenes content countless times and really saw how dedicated everyone was to bringing Tolkien's world to the screen. True that. As someone who's recently listened to an audiobook version of The Fellowship of The Ring, and noticed many things that were left out in the film, I still find Peter Jackson's films to be fantastic cinematic works of art.
Also, when comparing the film to the book regarding Fellowship of The Ring, I see the film as a perfect show-don't-tell representation of the book, unlike Ralph Bakshi's version which was very slow-paced at times (I still appreciate it for what it is, though).

They can attack Peter Jackson’s version all they want. It was massively successful, groundbreaking and quite frankly one of the best movie trilogies of all time. There is absolutely no way the tv series would even come close to topping Peter Jackson’s movies. Even if the tv show was decent and not woke, broken, inconsistent to the original material, and quite frankly filled with propaganda.
But hey let’s all just laugh at them, vote with our wallets and our eyes. Let’s watch them squirm. Because we are winning against these big corps and woke showrunners.
Even the Witcher got a bunch of flack for alterations to the lore and promised to stick to the books.
But the Witcher did some things right, the rings of power cleary is so far from being lord of the rings it might as well be game of thrones for all we care. It’s going to die in a ditch, crying and sobbing; blaming everyone who walks past, unwilling to help or care. Until it takes its last breath and is forgotten.

There's a very big difference between making changes to better suit the medium you're adapting to and just changing things to suit your own views and opinions. When you're adapting a beloved series it should be your duty to uphold as much of the original content as possible. Peter Jackson knew the difference and so he made some changes to better suit the medium which sadly cut out some stuff. Amazon are likely going for opposite. For whatever reason newer directors and writers think they're amazingly creative people who can only improve the work cause they spent like 6 months on a script or project. When something like LOTR possibly took years/decades to write.
I'll also back this up with an anime example: One of the big hitters was a show called The Promised Netherland and during S1 it was an amazing production that the studio put a lot of work in to. They didn't change anything but rearrange and add some scenes. However during S2 they completed removed story arcs and changed the ending. This completely miffed off the community and S2 is pretty much regarded as never happened. Now to be fair to the anime they have a lower budget and only a set amount of EPs. Amazon can't use either of those as excuse.

Very well said. Which yeah I recall the promise neverland being very faithful to the manga. With some of the changes, I recall them doing. Being one of the characters talking to a doll about their plans, rather than thinking it inside of their mind. Getting across the same point, in a slightly different way. For it captured the soul and spirit of the original. A shame that quality did not last.
Which you are spot on about new artist, seeming to think they are just better than or able to improve on the old works. reminds me of stuff I used to see on video game forums all the time, where game is old so it sucks, new game is better for it's new. Seems to be the line of logic used by these new writers. That the old stuff is worst, simply due to being old and since they are creating something new, it's better than the old. For to truly improve on the old, would take alot of study and understanding the original source. You would need to know even the smallest of details like the back of your hand. Fully understanding how each thing works. Along with understanding, what happens when you remove this or that element. How things would change if you add something else into the mix. Which I doubt the people working on this show here understand. With how they can't even get minor details right, like dwarven women and facial hair. Making me it just the classic case of, they know better, when really they don't.

Yeah since, while episode one might not be the full story. It can still start off on a very good note, by getting to know the characters you will be spending a majority of your time with. Giving the viewer important information, maybe a bit of action and foreshadowing of later events. Which is something a run of the mill ultraman series does all the time. Lays out a solid ground work, to use for the rest of the series. Which is something Geed does very well with it's first two episodes. Setting up everything you need to understand, the story and later episodes. While having characters interact with each other and a few giant monster fights.
For fail to catch the viewer, by offering them a reason to stick around and you will lose them to someone else. For to create a reason to get invested in a story and follow it, shouldn't take three seasons.

If you were working for a company and being put in this situation by a client then you'd likely be charged/disciplined with accepting bribes through gifts. I don't think this is much different in principal as the specific views of these commentators have been compromised by the bribery/gifting that has taken place here. It's why we have such rules and regulations to avoid this kind of behaviour. Amazon have breached bribery laws from the looks of this, at least in the UK, they should be reported to the appropriate regulatory body in order to be investigated.

Throw in attacking the fans and acting like they are better than the lord of the ring films made by Jackson. To me all of this adds up to the makers of this show having no fate in their own product. Then there's the ones that go south after S3. This is our Walking Dead's, our CW Arrowverse and the like.
Basically, I think the that if it starts out great, the writers and showrunners realize they don't need to actually try. If it starts off bad, by the 3rd season, the writers and showrunners know that if S3 isn't successful, they're out of a job. Of course, there are anomalies like the original Avatar: The Last Airbender which is great throughout all 3 seasons and Batwoman which is terrible through all 3.

I'm in tech-sales... If we consider the supplier-customer relationship, Amazon's and the influencers' behaviour is far past the grey area of what either company would consider reasonable business and entertainment expense. We, and our customers have very strict policies in place around these things, and for good reason - throwing cash at someone does create a conflict of interest or the appearance of a conflict of interest, and either of those is a huge ethics problem.

Absolutely, this happened with Wheel of Time. I do think Rafe likely read all the books, but he despises them and thinks they must be destroyed.

There is the ODD comment about the show, but their thoughts on that are currently under NDA embargo so I can understand not giving details. Likely they want to get this over with first as they must have known trips and free gifts would cause more news to come out. When this dies down the embargo will likely drop. But until then, everyone saying the showrunners made them more confident than the footage is NOT a compliment.

I remember when LOTR and the Star Wars prequels were going toe - to - toe in the early 2000s.
For sure, LOTR trilogy was winning. Everyone could see how much love, craft and respect Jackson and his team put into it, but everyone was digging the SW prequels all the same.
It was a really exciting time, and WingNut and LucasFilm were going out of their way to impress and dazzle audiences - not just with cool visuals and great actors, but with verisimilitude and sincerity. They loved the fans. Skip forward a couple of decades and we get Soylo Ren and Rings of Poop. Sad, sad, sad...

LOTR had some changes, and people did complain (and still complain) about them. But the changes were few and far between.
The Hobbit trilogy (look how they conviniently forget that it exists) had far more changes, because they were trying to make a 9 hour trilogy from a short book, and most of the added material was bad and pointless. And heavily criticised.
The Rings of Power, based on the teaser and the interviews with the showrunners, seems to be only made of changes. They are making 10 hours (times 5) worth of footage from a few pages, and they can't even stick to those few pages correctly, before adding all their stuff.

He hates it - not because of bandwagon, initially he was excited for it - but as it dropped, both I (not as big a fan as he) and him (religiously a fan) both thought that the show looked like a crappy, generic fantasy series that tries to imitate Tolkien.
Tolkien's work is like a sculpture from Ancient Greece, the Jackson trilogy is like a sculpture from Madame Tussauds - the Amazon TV show is like a happy meal toy.

Shaun Gunner's first comment is making my head hurt. How is that a contradiction? Also- I'm sure that the showrunners were able to quote from the Appendices and Letters- because that's just about all they have to work with re the Second Age! As for minds being eased that the showrunners love Tolkien- what I want my mind to be eased about is that they know how to run a show in the first place, considering their paltry imdb sections. None of the shills seems to be asking that question, it's just "Do they love Tolkien or not?" I love Tolkien, but I've never made a show and wouldn't know what I was doing.

    • @disparutoo
      @disparutoo  Před 2 lety +1

I think the contradiction he was aiming at is this narrative that the movies and memes are not tolkiens exact work and therefore they shouldn't mind Rings of Power just doing whatever it wants.
It's a standard argument used by certain groups. They will try to find some kind of exception or just get you to accept a premise, then take that inch and run a mile with it and go from "you accept this, so now you'll accept ANYTHING". It's demonstrably wrong, easily disprovable, but if no-one can respond and he just says "bingo". Easier to just laugh.

  • @frizfriz
    @frizfriz Před 2 lety +3

So, Amazon's first attempt at presenting "super fans" as loving their product was massively (deservedly) ridiculed and scorned.
Then, Amazon buttered up a group of fans highly invested in online fandom with a trip, gifts, and cool experiences. They exposed the fans to a pair of master level Hollywood manipulators with the title of showrunners. Those men were obviously successful in impressing their message on the group. The fans have all been repeating the same words, phrases, and ideas. It's really hard to resist highly motivated, highly adept manipulators in person, but the rest of us weren't there, weren't exposed to it, so it hasn't got any effect on us. We still aren't buying it.
I keep asking myself, as you said in this video, why are they doing this at all? One theory I've heard is that the people making the show are convinced it's the greatest thing ever. They've talked about it, and gotten ridiculed, and responded with name calling, and attacking the fans. That negative reaction caused Amazon to try damage control, and every time they do damage control, it horrendously backfires causing more rejection of their show. Amazon is in a vicious circle at this point.
