- Wonder what the upcoming Mustang GT might handle like? Wonder what the range will be? This test might give you some idea of what to expect. We took our long term Mach-E, swapped in wider wheels and Pirelli P Zero summer tires in the same width as the Mach-E GT to see what the handling and range impact would be.

Exactly what I wanted to see! Nice look too!
I'm just glad to see you're OK. I don't know about others, but I get nervous when you go months between uploads.
@@dtay8913 I agree ☝🏼
I subscribe and send a few bucks each month to this channel for several reasons. Alex' reviews are the most informative and most carefully nuanced to differentiate facts from his opinions I've found on the web. Videos like this are another reason. An entire video devoted to swapping out wheels and tires with all the process entails. Who does such a thing??? No one I know of. And who can make it a compelling enough presentation to hold my attention for twelve and a half minutes. Again, nobody. Thanks, Alex.
Alex channel is a must.
Great video... many of us were waiting to see what the loss in range would be. 10 miles? Not such a big deal! Thanks again for the video.
Amazing how much a good tire can transform the handling and enjoyment of ANY vehicle. Such an underrated component.
5:33 "People so picky on the range numbers" Probably from MY vs Mach E video mostly... People have to admit Tesla's EPA estimate is not easily achieved on the highway.
I am a big fan, Alex. Your videos are the most clear, concise and complete on CZcams IMHO.
In this case though, I think you have presented a solution in search of a problem. Unless the problem is too much range, or that the tires squeal if you come out of a turn too quickly. If it’s the latter, there is a much better solution then spending $2000. Like the Doctor’s solution to the patient who complains that it hurts when he windmills his arm over his head: “If it hurts when you do that, don’t do that “.
Keep up the great videos.
I just bought a takeoff set of Mach GT performance wheels and was done with it! No spacers no pressure sensor swaps. The car learn the sensors within 20 miles. Got my P0 tires as well. Out the door for two grand and it looks awesome!
Thank you. I have a new MachE white awd xr and love it so far. Live in central Texas where few charging stations. 99% of charging at home on 240v 16amp charger which worked with my 2017 focus bev.
Thanks for the info on the diy shop! I had never heard of that concept but have been needing that services. Just looked it up and there is one in denver 30 min from my house!
You really do the best videos! Thank you.
That was a very good looking and decision to upgrade those wheels/tires!
And the price on tires were awesome! Nicely done Alex 🤑
Great job! I was waiting for this video. Very interesting to see how much the range, ride, handling, and braking changed with the new wheels. Looks like a winner with only a slight decrease in range. Did you notice any difference in road noise with the new wheels?
Great analysis Alex!
Your new wheels immediately reminded me of my '14 Accord Hybrid wheel. Look good on the 'Stang.
Great video! Side note, those new wheels look so much nicer that the ones that came with the Mach-E. They have a cool look when in motion.
VERY informative video. Thank you for doing all the homework for me.
awesome showing this!!
I do love the idea of that DIY or die place! I think we all wish we had access to a lift once in a while haha.
Especially when having to hitchhike. 👍
There was a DIY Bay rental place in Sterling, VA. It was really nice. They ended up closing, however.
Those wheels look great!
Grip will always come before mpg ,mpge or range. Never want to give up contact with the road.Ever time something unexpected happens and the tires push the envelope of safety, I’m glad I went wide on my tires.
Those rims help make that red POP and really compliment the lines of the car 👌
Those wheels look great! I love the pattern when the car is in motion. Not a huge hit to range either.
A great real world test would include 4 passengers on board and test out the range and efficiency.
I love tires. Such an under appreciated part of a car.
A car just isn't the same without tires!
Thanks 👍 you answered most of my questions. This is how it should have come from the factory
Nice road force balance machine. Hunter!
Interesting to see that the difference is so small in your case. On my Bolt, the difference was much more noticeable. About 10%. That was going from the stock 215-50-17 Michelin Energy Saver AS to a 225-45-17 Michelin Pilot Sport AS4. The difference in grip is absolutely worth it though. The stock tires spin when stabbing the throttle from a 20mph roll on dry pavement. The Pilot AS4s just grip and grip, totally transforms the car.
What size wheels did you get? 19x8 or 19x8.5? Great video!!
Lincoln fan here, planning on buying a mach-e, owing 15 of them throughout my life. Just noticed those wheels are from a Continental not an mkx.
Any update videos planned for the future?
A key point of information to reference for the reduction in mileage between the original set up and the aftermarket set up you’ve now applied, would be the weight of the wheel plus tire of the original set up versus the new set up. Did you happen to capture the weight difference between the setups?
Most of MY efficiency appears to be due to creative math.
At 2:55, I believe you meant to say “same tires as on Mustang Mach-E GT,” but didn’t say “GT.” I was confused… not sure if it’s worth adding a note there. Thanks for great reviews!
Alex: The OEM tires are not low rolling resistance tires. You showed the effect of performance tires on range in this video. It would be great to complete the test by measuring the range increase due to low rolling resistance tires.
Awesome.
What are your thoughts on staggering front and back to minimize resistance and cater to the 70/30 rear wheel bias?
You were just driving your mach-e faster with the new tires. That will reduce range also (3 - 4% ;-) ). Can you get an 18" with more side wall that clears the caliper? Can you get new TMPS and leaves the originals untouched and ready to mount. Thanks Alex good vid and gr8 to see someone else enjoy this vehicle.
Hi Alex, is it long range or standard Range? Did they ask for dealer markup ? In So Cal they have big dealer markup. Which one do you like most? Model Y or Mustang Mach E
Alex, can you review Hino 238 or 268. And duallies? Maybe an M2 106 as well. Thanks!!!
I'm taking delivery soon on my Mac-E and I want to do the rim and rubber upgrade as you have done. Problem sis finding the MKZ rims at a reasonable price. Any suggestions?
Good buy too...Also...very nice wheels. Perhaps upgrading the brake pads? Also...put some dedicated winter tires on the spare rims?
Winter tires in the Bay Area? 😂
“More importantly performance compared to stopping distance (safety)…..” was something I never expected to hear from you Alex….🥲
Was it a problem to use the Mach-E center caps with the new wheels?
Those wheels look really sharp on the car and far better than the factory wheels.
Do any changes need to be made in the system after swapping?
Like the tire and wheel upgrade Alex. Hope your installer did not actually install wheel spacers and installed wheel centering rings instead because there is a slight chance that the spacers could work loose and the wheel and tire assembly could fall off. Just saying what others have told me
Love the turbine wheels
Surely appealing where you live, but a non-starter in Illinois, due to the reduced sidewalls. Anything less than a 55 aspect ratio is just asking for it on our potholed roads. A local tire shop can just about support itself with wheel repairs from vehicles with 45 and lower aspect tires
My car that I bought new back in 2012 came with 175mm width tires on 15" rims. My parents camry that they bought a year later had 205mm with 16" rims. Fast forward to now and you're claiming 225mm tires are too small. No doubt about it, we're in a glutton phase again here in America. Bigger trucks, bigger tires, small cars going bye-bye. This reminds me of the early oughts all over again...
I have been wavering on buying a Mach-E Premium or ponying up (sorry) for a GT. So, I keep going to Ford’s site and configuring them. For the first time, today I noticed that Ford is offering a summer tire option for $250. However, it seems to be the same size tire as standard. I guess they heard the voice of the consumer, which is encouraging. It is only available on the Premium ER eAWD model.
Not able to really compare to the previous range test since it's mentioned that it was driven 15 min faster through the winding sections.
the skinny OE wheel/tire combo on Mach-E's is kind of noticeable when you see one going down the road. jumped out at me right away. it indeed looks "odd" given the size/length of the vehicle, though admittedly most not into the existing S550 Mustang (and performance cars in general) may not think anything of it.
Before & After Tire / Rim weight?
What did the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times become?
They look stock great choice and it makes me wonder why they don't have an option for thicker tires like the gas mustangs?
I would love to see someone put a smaller overall diameter wheel/tire combo on the car so it accelerates faster. You'd basically need to find a wheel that barley squeezes over the caliper and then the smallest aspect ratio tire made.
so you are willing to trade handling/grip for a slightly faster acceleration? just buy the GT or buy lighter aftermarket rims instead imo.
@@_TrueDesire_ diameter, not width. lower diameter tires means lower effective gearing
I think it actually looks really good!
3 questions Alex: 1. Will our 28” tall 76lb dog fit in the back of a Mach-e with the rear seats up? 2. Is the Mach-e capable of bidirectional charging? If yes, would using it that way void the warranty? 3. Is it as quiet and comfortable as our Ford Edge?
Did you say $100 bucks a tire ?
Sandy Munro was fairly critical of the High Voltage and Heat Pump engineering that Ford did for the Mach-E.
I don't find him terribly objective for a number of reasons.
And you're saying that to say what exactly? What did that have to do with the new wheels he just put his car?
You damn Tesla fanboys love throwing shade at the Mustang Mach E. Why are you that bothered by something you have no interest in? Or is it just the fear of something stepping into that place? If you really and truly were worried then you wouldn't care.
Wait and see how those pirelli will start to shake
4:13 - the reveal. BEHOLD...!!! the new 2023 Lincoln (Mercury) "Grand" Mach-E.
I can't buy in to this thing until I see it rolling on a 19x10 or 20x10 wheel, fitted with at least a 275/30.
275 would never fit this version or Mach E and likely any or its upcoming models.
@@James-il3tq okay then I'll take a 265...I really want to see a real, bonafide performance tire set up on one of these. That's my point.
@@James-il3tq went over to the mach e forums. There are folks running 295s on this thing on the rear.
Interesting video, but I'm a little worried that there is no mention of the weight rating of the tire or the wheel. The Mach-E is about a thousand pounds heavier then a Ford Edge or Lincoln Nautilus. Is the tire rated as high the factory tire? What is the wheel rated at? Did you cause a dangerous situation or reduce your payload capabilities?
Tires have the same weight rating as OEM, the wheels have essentially the same weight rating according to my sources inside Ford.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide good to know. I know the parts people were told not to allow people to buy Edge winter wheel packages due to weight.
Someone find me a review video where Alex doesn't mention "wider tires, grippier tires"
There are some…on channels Alex isn’t on
Alex branching out to pimp my ride!
Don't tires really rot with age, and anything over 3 years from date of manufacture should be avoided? Is there some trick to properly storing spare tires to prevent rot?
6 years is the general expectation I believe. Anything in a climate controlled environment (or sealed in an airtight bag) and out of direct sunlight should help prolong life, but age is still age.
Wait, did I miss it or did the 0-60 time stay the same?
Good question, Alex!!
Thanks, Alex. I've upgraded my planned Mach-E order from a Premium to a GT (though not the performance spec; I'd love the adaptive suspension but have no interest in summer tires or the narrower racing seats, and Ford requires the panoramic sunroof on the Performance Edition to get the BlueCruise capabilities. I'm happier to delete the sunroof and add some seat comfort.). I'm a little concerned that the smaller sidewall will make the ride too uncomfortable for my family, but hopefully that won't be too bad a compromise. Given your video, though, I'm pleased I'll at least be getting the wider contact patch with the 245s rather than the 225s in the Premium.
Why do you say you chose the Lincoln wheels because they had the correct offset ... then say you needed 5mm spacers? What were the dimensions and offset of the Lincoln wheels?
Things were probably fine without the spacers, but I added them to be extra safe
P-Zero tires for under $100 a corner? That's a down right steal but around $250 per wheel is a bit pricey for used wheels but
hey under $1500 all-in really isn't too bad.
Range tests on electric cars IMHO should be more accurate then range tests on gas vehicles. Now of course there's hybrids and cars with start stop but I'm talking about standard gas vehicles. Because, you driving into an intersection, you could be waiting 5 minutes or you could not wait at all. With an electric vehicle, at least you aren't running a motor while sitting at the light. I haven't owned a car with start stop, I would probably turn it off, and turn it back on when I know I'll be waiting at least two minutes.
It would have been interesting to use a lighter wheel those things look insanely heavy.
I agree it looks better with wider tires, but those “new” rims are…. 😂
Still prefer my Rav4 Prime - just wish it had 100 miles of EV range rather than the 42 to 46 I actually get. I can't deal with range anxiety or the hassle of finding a fast charger in the wilderness.
🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴 Now this is the BEST EV that is on the market today.
Volvo style wheels are nice.... That's too bad that wheels from actual mustang don't fit because they have a similar style of wheel to that of Volvo .
Wheel look too busy for me.
put on some Prius shoes. You’ll get great gas mileage.
Or BMW i3. Those suckers are like bike tire thin and I am sure light weight.
A bit off topic, but when you review the outlander, *please compare it to 5 seaters,* as that's the actual competition for it.
We don't see $100 tires much anymore.
Hmm…not liking those rims…looks like an old man MKZ now…should have chosen fewer spokes. That said, I’m all for having a unique look, and for the price, I’d do the same…just keep the car moving and there won’t be any nay sayers! LOL. Great job.
If you had to do spacers, something wasn't right with the parameters of the wheel itself.
Can this dude wear looser fit jeans ever
Nice video. Thanks, Alex. But I think adding a spacer is not a good idea for long-term driving. If you hear strange metal breaking sound or brake noise, you may want to check if any of the bolts are breaking off.
Wheel 1 would have been my choice, but not horrible.
If this is a Mustang, anything is. World is changing fast and they are trying to convince us that an EV is just like any raw V8 fun car.
Don't get in a fender bender, 6 month wait for a bumper
-sigh- why are big chrome bumpers that are easy to replace/fix uncool again?
@@GreenBlueWalkthrough they aren't, look at trucks
That's after waiting three to four weeks for flatbed Ford truck to pick up your Tesla to take it in to be repaired so either or pick your poison.
@@twany442 is that supposed to make Ford look better? I'll give you a hint, it doesn't
@@whiteandnerdytuba No trying to help you with your mother's aesthetic.
EV owners in California cant really use Summer Tires...There is so much Crap..Piss...and puke in the streets they are WAY TOO SLICK
Gotta quit comparing it to a regular mustang. While I think this is an awesome vehicle, shouldn’t be called a mustang.
That car is screaming for black wheels; luxury car chrome wheels don't belong on sports or sporty cars.
Powder coating or plastidip solves that.
Black wheels are a trend that can't die soon enough. Soon as the automakers started putting them on EVERYTHING, they became passe.
Works fine on my pony package.
@@JDONUMBER7 while I would have unequivocally agreed as recently as a couple months ago, I decided to paint my stock F-150 wheels black instead of shelling out big money for aftermarket. The black hides the factory appearance and I think gives it a decent look. In every other respect I agree though, as hiding a wheel’s appearance isn’t normally what I’d advocate for.
Funny. Some of us remember when chrome wheels were required for a vehicle to be consider a sports car, or even sporty.
1- You have Honda Civic tires because it’s not a Mustang.
2- Pirrelli P-Zero Nero are probably the worst piece of shit you could buy.
3- These wheels are the ugliest I’ve seen on a Ford since the Turbine Wheels
Those wheels are 😒
Reason why Tesla wins is bc
Supercharger > Electrify America
What a waste of time and Money
Summer tire is a downgrade.
Please explain.
Hi Alex your delicate bashing of Japanese brands is still on as we can see. Up level Honda Civics have 235' tires not 225's.. However, VW GLi that you can't prevent yourself from being partial towards especially against Japanese brands, uses a 225 size tire Don't even say or even imply anything negative about European cars since that would be the end of your career.
If you guys want to go green, don't buy a brand new electric vehicle. Buy a used car.
Too many variables with a used car to reach a greener status. It could be done, but your margin of error is going to be small.
If everyone had a brand new electric car, overall emissions would go up but eventually level off and start to improve. If everyone drove a used gas car, emissions would only get worse with no chance for a turnaround in the future. This is also not factoring in the immediate benefit that driving an electric car has on local pollution, since the emissions are moved to a place not densely populated with people.
Used cars are slow and boring. If you want a performance car and you're actually serious about low emissions, then an EV is the way to go. If don't care about emissions, get a 5.0 GT and burn that $4/gal gas til your wallet hurts.
Most used cars on the market are junk and should be crushed.
Well yeah... why would they put mustang tires on something that isn't a mustang? Joking! It can be a mustang. Its just a pig ugly mustang that makes the Mustang II look good.
