- Here’s how I change the oil in a 2019 Honda Odyssey elite. This vehicle uses 5.5 quarts of 0W20 oil.

Thanks for the tip, I'm about to DIY for the first time on our Odyssey.
Good luck!
Yes! This bag over the filter method is exactly what I was looking for. There are so many videos of people using nothing to prevent messes/spillage in that area. I did also find another guy who used and "Oil mat" to redirect the flow of oil coming off the filter removal. Thanks Myks
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad this was helpful.!
I never thought of the zop-lock bag thing. Excellent idea for any thing.
Yes, it makes it makes it much easier! Thanks for watching
I cut off the top of a 1 gallon water jug. Then using the top upside down with the cap on, slip it around the filter and take the filter off using the bottles handle to easily hold it. It catches the oil and filter with no mess. Yes in the past it was a nightmare to clean up. Also if oil gets on the lower control arm bushing it will deteriorate the rubber and eventually fail so keep the oil off it by easily changing the oil yourself. Great video!
Thanks for the tip!!
Best video yet for Honda oil filter change! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Agree with others, your video is superb! Bag for filter is useful! Steps are clear and easy to follow. Thanks!
Thanks for the positive comment!
Nicely done, easy, and simple explanation. Good little project for my son to do and swap the winter tires on at the same time. Thank you
Thank you for watching!
I got an oil change a couple weeks ago and have been seeing drips on the garage floor and this video has been educational. I'm sure when they pulled the filter they let oil drip all over because the stain is in the same shape as the piece below. Reassuring to know that it is only a sloppy oil change and not a more urgent issue.
Yes! These shops don’t care if the The oil drips all over the control arm, that is probably what you’re seeing . Thanks for watching
Thank you so much for the ziplock idea. I always dread changing the filter on this car because oil gets everywhere.
Yeah it's a weird oil filter location, good luck l!
You don’t even need to put oil on that Oil filter gasket, Honda puts Vaseline on this gasket, you don’t need to prefill the oil because it sits on the bottom oil will get in it when you start adding oil to the crank case, these Japanese engineers thought about everything
Good tip, Thanks for sharing
good video -- I never thought of the idea of using the baggie on the filter.
Yeah it reduces the mess! Good luck!
You’re the best . Thanks for the vid
Thanks for watching!
Just tried this trick, worked like a charm 👍
Glad to hear!
Very nice video. Looking forward to a transmission fluid drain and fill on this same car. Thank you!
Thanks for watching
Agreed. Nice video. Also waiting for the ATF drain and fill.
Very informative, great job
Thanks for watching
I tried the bag method this last time. Certainly a better method than I tried last time. I still seriously want to slap the engineer who put the oil filter there, gah!
Yeah that oil filter location was a complete afterthought
The baggy (or condom) method is really smart. Nice job.
Thanks for watching
I must say, this is one of the best oil change videos I have ever seen. From your tone of voice, to the attention to detail, to the visuals, it is an excellent video. Thanks.
Thank you!
I'll be darn! It works! Thanks
Nice!
Thank you learned something new
Glad to hear!!
Helpful, thx!!!
👍
Thank you 👍
Thanks for watching
Thank you.
👍
I use foil to not have it drip on the control arm and use the pan to catch the oil
That’s a good idea! Thanks for sharing
Great trick!
Thanks for watching!
Good idea but I rather have a little mess than wasted plastic/zip lock bag
you can also punch a hole in the bottom of the filter as well with a punch and it will drain nice and clean :)
👍
On behalf of cheap suburban dads everywhere, thank you sir.
👍
My biggest gripe for using wheel ramps for oil changes is the fact that you cannot rotate the tires at the same time.
You really rotate your tires yourself? My Discount tire store does it for free, and I didn’t even buy the tires there.
@@Myksgarage it only adds 10-20 minutes to the project and it's even quicker with an impact. Saves me having to wait even longer at a shop to do it and I know my lugs aren't cross threaded and are torqued correctly. Sam's Club is free but it's just quicker and easier to do it on oil changes. With Jack stands you can put the floor jack under one wheel in the back at a time without making up the whole back end or using a lift
@@Myksgarage Exactly! DT/AT free rotations for all.
@@TwoTall1988odyssey says they’re cross directional. Do you just do front to back?
@@jsixamore Honda doesn't advertise what tires come on the Odyssey but it appears to be the BRIDGESTONE TURANZA EL440 which are not directional. They would be rotated like normal (front left -> rear left; front right -> rear right; rear left -> front right; rear right -> front left). P.s. the EL440 is also hot garbage so don't buy them as replacements. I like the BFGoodrich Advantage.
bag and water jug both good ideas, think bag would be much easier to position
Yeah it's worked well!
What brand Ramps are those? Heard some can’t handle the weight so any feedback you can share would be great
Here are the Ramps Used in the video:amzn.to/3h3CVJc
They hold 12,000lbs, so they are more than adequate
Where the oil filter is, what's all the oil around there? Is that from the filter or the tie rod boot? Looks like it's been there a while. Did you have a leak?
I don’t think i had a leak, it’s just from the oil filter
Good video, was looking for the bag but I think you tightened it way too much...
Don’t want it leaking…
I feel like if its on jack stands that itd just be easier to take off the tire for better access
Yeah that's a good point
What’s the reason for tightening the filter that much? Is there a problem with filters loosening on that engine model?
Just to make sure it doesn’t leak. Thanks for watching!
@@Myksgarage over tight filter is more likely to leak than a filter that’s properly installed.
Great channel and vid.
Great idea! Who decided to install the filter right above the chassis? lol
Yeah, that was an afterthought
You should really invest in an oil filter wrench instead of using those channel lock pliers. I also always take the front passenger wheel off to do oil changes on the van, makes it much easier to access the oil filter. I usually rotate the tires at the same time anyways.
I just changed the oil on our van this morning. I'll have to remember the bag trick for next time because the engineers who design these things don't realize they put the oil filter directly over the frame and it makes a mess. I had a Nissan Alitma that was the same way. My F150 is the cleanest oil change in the world as the oil filter is on top of the engine. The messiest oil change ever was our Toyota Highlander we had though that required a special socket to remove the canister housing, although we had an earlier Highlander that had the oil filter on the front of the engine, and when you took it off there was a small channel designed into the engine block that allowed the oil to drip into and down to the ground under the car where it wouldn't drip on anything else.
Thanks for the tips
Get a Fumoto Drain Plug and not have to mess with that drain bolt ever again!
I'll have to try that ziplog bag trick. Honda always puts filters in hard to reach places; unlike my Subaru.
Good tip, thanks !
You didn't cover the reset for the maintenance light on the dash.
Oh yeah!
How much do I need to put oil on?
Not sure
Crazy that Honda doesn't put the amount of oil on the door sticker, under the hood, on the fill cap, or in the section of the manual labelled "oil". WTF?!?!?
Yeah that is odd
Been looking for this solution. There are so many things I hate about my odyssey. This particular design "feature" has to be one of the DUMBEST designs ever. The engineer that approved this placement should be fired.
Well said sir!!
Good job but you really need to clean your engine compartment as it looks pretty filthy!
I've already sold it, so it's the next guys project
@@Myksgarage yes but just think how much more you could have gotten for it had that engine compartment been clean, lol
that way is dangerous because the car is not secure on a ramp only
Thanks for your concern
You don't need the oil filter that tight I've been doing oil changes for years just now get up a little bit and leave it alone it will be harder to get off when you doing oil change if you taking it take this you are
🤷
