  • In this video, I will share with you my personal experience with owning this 2019 Honda Odyssey Elite van. I have had no issues with the vehicle but there are definitely things that I found to be very good and things that are not. Keep in mind different owners might have different experiences with this vehicle. If you are in the market for a minivan, I hope you find this video helpful. Thank you!

    I thought the paddle shifters were unnecessary as well however I just drove cross country to California. We went up pikes peak and did a two day trip through the Sierra Nevada mountains in Cali and those paddle shifters came in clutch (super handy) down shifting coming down the mountains so I wouldn’t over use the brakes. Now I understand why they put them in!

    • @felicelgato59
      @felicelgato59 Před 3 lety +2

      I use my paddle shift the same way. Maybe is the manual transmission experience all this year's on my bike and older cars

    • @wm437
      @wm437 Před 2 lety +6

      Those paddle shifters are extremely important when coming down a steep downgrade, I use them all the time when I go up to the mountains to sightsee.
      Coming down them steep hills is very scary if all you have to depend on is brakes. Brakes heat up, fade and fail but downshifting will prevent that scenario.

      I was just about to comment about this... I use them all the time on my 2021.... I love them for traveling in the mountains which i do often. There are a few interesting quirks that you should know.... if you just tap the - (left side) it will downshift ... but will resume normal drive mode once you push the gas hard enough. But if you want to keep that gear, for instance mountains where gradients change slightly and you need to keep the same gear but apply a little gas.... tap the D (drive button) to enter sport mode. ... then gear will stay no matter what (unless slowing beyond capability of the gear)..... also if you want to quickly want to enter regular drive mode... tap the drive button twice to cycle back into the drive mode. ... works like a charm for me once you learn it.

    Good stuff! We have a 2019 EX-L really only have 2 complaints. 1 the transmission sometimes has a delay from stop so you step on gas and nothing happens for like 2 seconds. No loving that. Also the headlights on EXL trim are not very good. On the plus side we took one 3600 mile road trip and averaged 27.4 mpg and the majority of that was 80-85 mph driving

    On my 2018 Odyssey EX
    85,875 miles total..
    1 problem that I fixed was at 55,000 was that had very low acceleration & hesitation with the economy mod off and on didn't make a difference then i noticed the remote start wasn't working properly it would start and run for 3 to 5 seconds then shut completely off on it's own. I had no check engine light, I had a 100$ level scan reader & eraser and no codes, but I was using my Sprint obd ll WiFi that had a built in trouble code scanner. Now it finally gave me a code (( low throttle response )) then I knew that the throttle body area was the problem so I carefully removed the throttle body and noticed the after the throttle plate was extremely dirty so i used throttle body cleaner to remove all dirt and oil residue. After assembly every thing back, took for TEST DRIVE and the problem was fixed.. Yes the dealer could fix it but i wanted to know how to fix it myself..

    Strange to see that defect from the outer panel (door skin) separating from the door shell. I'm surprised that was not caught at the factory. However It looks like a quality repair was done. That is a very well equipped, nice versatile van. The paddle shifters are a bit gimmicky and likely the marketing departments attempt to persuade people they're buying a sporty vehicle. You obviously take very good care of it, which is no easy task for a large family vehicle. Best of luck with it!

    I own 2023 Touring and agree with second row AC vents and seat belts fully. My kids complain about the same what you said. the newer vehicles have sensors in the middle on front bumper. However, I miss the self dimming feature on the outside mirrors which is available only on Elite. Overall MPG I get is bit more, on highways I consistently get approx 27, short rides in winter are the worst for MPG.

You have a reduce power mode when the front gets splashed with slush and snow but nothing seems to change? Have you had the cruise control crap out because that same slush and snow covered the passenger side front bumper?

    3 additional problems for you from 1 day of owning 2020 elite. Front vents have a high pitch noise when fans are on full blast unless you fiddle with the direction of the vents. Drivers side passenger door, the molding on top of the window is not flush with the driver door molding causing it to poke out, dealership will not fix or replace since "all" of the trims models that have plastic and not chrome exhibit this abnormality. I checked at several dealerships and the majority have this defect. Thirdly, the cooling seats have a higher than desirable humming noise that when I first drove the car home and didn't notice the cooling seats being on, I thought that the car windows were down and I could here faint sound of construction work being done!!!
    Very informative review of the oddysey, thank you very much!

    • @dial2fast
      @dial2fast  Před 4 lety

      Sorry to hear about your problem. Sometimes dealer will avoid fixing something if they can show all the cars have the problem....that makes it 'normal or acceptable'. As for the front sensors, you can't add 2 more sensors. However I have been thinking about relocating the two corner sensors to the front to make it more useful. That might be a later project.

    I have a 2018 Odyssey Elite, I drove it from the Bay area to San Diego (the longest it had been driven)..I noticed the rotors warped (shake and brake) and now I need to change them. I'll upgrade to a slotted/vented rotors. I think its a design flaw given the size of the vehicle during prolonged slight braking and sudden stops. Honda should've installed a slotted/vented rotor in front to prevent early wear and tear. I also hate the stop/start function, I just turn if off the first thing I do when driving the vehicle.

    • @johng8466
      @johng8466 Před 2 lety

      I did that upgrade before on other vehicles.. I didn't like them because they give more vibration/noice when stopping harder especially from faster speeds. There was a test I saw somewhere that they didn't work as advertised. Maybe if you got them you can tell us if they worked for you? Also, you can buy thicker (upgraded) rotors and that should work much better. I had my rotors turned for free by Honda after only a month of ownership after a long downhill drive and using brakes heavily... I have since become very good at using the paddle-shifters to smoothly downshift going downhill... I have not had any warped rotors since. (knock on wood)

    I had 5 mini vans all my life, the odyssey that I own had nothing but problems. 09 odyssey sliding door problems, front driver side window regulator when out, abs module, spongy brake pedals, fuse blowing up, alternator will not charge. Keep in mind the 09 odyssey I kept it only for 2 years and trade in it for an 2011 sienna. Which now have over 380k and still running with original engine and transmission, never replace any spark plugs nor transmisison fluid.

  • @CoralSea
    @CoralSea Před 4 lety +4

    I currently own an ‘07 Odyssey and I prefer its look over the new one. It’s one of the reasons I don’t want to replace it with the new one. Plus, the air vents, seat belts placement of the new one don’t help either. In the 07 I can store the 2nd row middle seat under the floor. It has double wishbone suspensions so that makes handling good imo.

    Great video.
    -The paddle shifters are good incase you are going long way downhill, you set to S mode then downshift to a proper lower gear, so you coast downhill, with no brakes on.
    -The intermittent wipers have two modes, either it's Rain sensing or timed (like old cars used to have); you pick which way it's going to be in the settings.
    -the key fob issue with your phone: I think it's related to the phone's NFC; if you test with a phone that does not have NFC, I think it won't happen. basically it's interference of signals

    • @dial2fast
      @dial2fast  Před 3 lety +2

      I do leave the ECON mode on just to squeeze a little bit more fuel saving but not by much. But do keep in mind with ECON mode on, the initial acceleration will be reduced, and the AC will operate not as strong. Especially if the engine stop is enabled and the engine is off, the AC is barely cold. Now you can toggle the ECON mode on and off whenever you want to adjust to the driving you are doing.

  • @discerningmind
    @discerningmind Před 2 lety +1

    Note 1: If the shoulder belt is rubbing on his kids' necks than they're too little to be using shoulder harnesses. This puts the kids in danger--that info should be in the Owner's Manual. My understanding for little kids no longer using car seats, is they should have the lap belt fastened (securely on their hips!) and then place the shoulder belts behind them so it will stay between their back and the back of the seat.
    Note 2: We stopped using Eco or Econ Mode in our car because we realized it strained the transmission. It would up-shift much sooner causing that. We'd much rather pay a tad more in gas (if that) than have to replace the transmission.

    • @johng8466
      @johng8466 Před 2 lety

      Eco mode is great if you want to drive slow like a limousine. It completely takes away that starting jerk back when you start from a stop. I love it actually, but in a hurry or quick driving most definitely I prefer it off. I have a 2021 so maybe they fixed this issue you have.

    My biggest complaint about 2019 Odyssey is its heater performance, especially through footwells. It does not move adequate hot air even at its highest setting. And second complaint is how steering “wanders” left and right. It is difficult to keep it straight without adjusting the steering wheel constantly.

    • @CoralSea

      I thought only my 2017 Honda Accord Sport does that. I guess it has something to do with electric power steering wheel. My old Hondas were hydraulic power steering wheel and they were so much better at keeping straight line.

    So I’m a Toyota Sienna owner and their 2021 model you cannot remove the middle seats due to thorax airbags as well the center console protrudes back to that area. I’ll be more than likely going back to an Odyssey or maybe a Pacifica. Would you be able to tell me side door height to get in and how wide the door opening is? I’m using my sienna for a wheelchair so I’d need 27” wide opening. My other option is $40,000 for a conversion which has a whole other set of issues. Keep up the content, very interesting channel.

    Thanks for the review. I have 6 kids and two are in car seats. With this I am concerned about the AC vent placement not being on the roof. If a child is rear facing, it will block the air. Have you had any issues with the vent layout and passengers in the back?

    • @dial2fast
      @dial2fast  Před 3 lety +3

      I kids are 14 and 12, so they are out of car seats. With rear facing car seats, during a hot summer, this car will take a bit more time to cool the passengers. Also if you drive with Econ mode (to maximize gas mileage), the AC will also run less cold which result in longer cooling time. Although you can disable Econ mode if you want. The design is definitely less comfortable for the first 10 minutes of a drive during a hot summer, but the cabin will cool to a comfortable level. Another big factor people don't think about is color of your vehicle. A dark color will be significantly hotter inside than a lighter color like white. I use to own a black car here in Georgia, and there is a big difference in the inside temperature after it's been baking in the sun. So hope some of the info helps.

      It most certainly acoustically tunes the road noice. Also brake hold is completely different.. it engages the front brakes and you don't get that dip down in the back if you released the gas pedal and the car is still in drive. Brake hold is awesome.. and automatic... enjoy your hand brake.... :)

    • @dial2fast
      @dial2fast  Před 4 lety

      I love driving CVT. As for reliability, you must do transmission drain and fill service on the CVT every 50k miles if you want it to last.

    • @xr500t
      @xr500t Před 4 lety

      @@dial2fast DO NOT wait to 50K! The Service Marketing hype is for maintenance cost reduction. You will burn the transmission. My 2000k Oddy has 280k on it's original transmission..... and those were the really bad transmissions. I used to change (flush-n-fill) the fluid every 20k. I now drain and fill with every oil change at 4k, not expensive for the service that vehicle provides. I can't seem to kill it, and I drive it kinda hard, also wish I had those paddle shifters.

    • @hassanmohammad7397
      @hassanmohammad7397 Před 4 lety

      The Honda 10 spd is definitely a better transmission. I’ve heard that the Nissan CVT transmissions are weak and unreliable. But the 10 spd keeps the refs quite low at highway cruising and shifts flawlessly.
