Back in the day, friends of the family had a 1972 Imperial sedan. The ride was unbelievable. If younger people would feel the comfort, they would scoff at today's cars. After a long day at work, or on a long ride, you got in those plush seats and the car pampered you!

I had a 1972 Imperial LeBaron with a 440 and also before that a 1973 Chrysler Newport with a 400. I loved the Imperial, but today's cars are so much easier to handle and drive than those old boats. I do not remember that they were that comfortable on the highways going over bumps.

    • @josephconsoli4128

@@MrTrack412 I respect your opinion, but the only reason why we desire better handling cars is we're DRIVING TOO FAST on the roads and exit/entrance ramps. The statistics today, as to the amount of vehicle accidents and their severity, is staggering. I know that for a fact. Cars from the '50's-'70's drove and handled totally acceptably IF you're driving safely. I'm surprised you don't recall how butter-smooth those large '70's cars drove. My father had '60's-'70's Caddy's and, on bumping roads, all you experienced is some thumping sounds inside the car. Nothing was actually felt. I also recall riding in a '70 Toranado, besides the '72 Imperial, and the ride was ULTRA buttery smooth. My new Elantra hatchback knocks the fillings out of my teeth on a bumpy road! Terrible.

That's what I miss here in the UK. Its not in the same class but I was lucky enough to find a Mk2 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7V8. Those soft seats and long-travel suspension..... good lord. Modern cars seem to have church pews for seating these days!

I too have owned a couple of older, massive Detroit Iron vehicles...My 72 Electra was so huge/heavy, that it seemed as if the road was moving underneath you, rather than you actually driving over the road!...Very smooth and reassuring.

The tab on the left trunk gutter is where the trunk light switch mounts. Just a single wire plunger type that turns the light off wen the trunk lid is closed.
My 70 Cuda has one. Usually has a map light under passenger side of dash down low also

That bracket was an add on - for the Imperial had a trunk light mounted at the rear of the truck (deck lid) left to the latch and worked on a mercury switch so when you lifted the lid up a bit the whole truck would light up. I have one on my 70 Chrysler Newport Custom.

  • @Primus54
    @Primus54 Před 2 lety +6

On my iPad, I could see a touch of the original green when the trunk lid was open. Imperials never got the sales or respect they were due. If you were a teenager in the late 60’s borrowing Dad’s Imperial for a Friday night date, you didn’t want to be past curfew trying to sneak in… those headlight covers closing could wake up the entire neighborhood! Thanks, Lou! ~ John 👍

Oh boy, does this video trigger car memories. I owned and drove a 69 2dr Le Baron right through to the late 70’s, through 2 gas shortages, a story unto itself! I really appreciate seeing the interior, it’s just as beautiful as I remember it, what a comfortable car for a long road trip. You didn’t show it, but those tail lights also function as sequential turn signals. The car doesn’t have drink holders, but everyone got their own ash tray and lighter, a sign of the times. There are very nicely concealed storage compartments under each of the door arm rests. Yeah, I’m having a nice trip down memory lane, no telling when I might come back.

Production of the 1969 Imperial LeBaron Coupe was 4,572 units. 1969 was last year for pillared 4-door sedan. 1970 was last year for Imperial Crown. Fuselage Imperials shared bodies with cheaper Chryslers except for three inch longer wheelbase. Instrument panel was similar to cheaper Chrysler. Fiberglass in rear window replaced soldered lead panel in early 1960s LeBaron which rotted and bubbled over time. Due to shared bodies, fuselage Imperials and the 1974 to 1975 Imperials were not as distinctive as Cadillacs and Lincolns at that time...but did offer exclusive rear seat air conditioning and 4wheel disc brakes. Imperial coupes are also generally rare.

This is such an Oil Mogul or a Crime Syndicate Boss vehicle. No sporty stripes, no cartoon logos, no engine size badges, just nothing crazy. The size and luxury alone make everyone know, that a "big fish" just rolled up to the neighborhood. Tough looking on the outside, but so soft inside. Hi, Lou! Yep, you gotta see this all right...'cause you can't possibly miss it! LOL! That's a lotta engine...that's a lotta space...that's a lotta car! Everybody's moving hard right, 'cause you gotta give it a wide berth! The fuselage styling with that high beltline and incredible length makes it look even more massive.
That said, Tim's car is quite a beauty. I love the hidden headlamps, the sequential taillamps (too bad you didn't show those in action), that jade leather interior and that instrument panel with the woodgrain on all the control knobs, the radio dial and all the gauge faces. There was even a cardinal singing it's praises as you two were out cruising (11:12)! Tim was fortunate to find a two-door, as those accounted for less than a quarter of the 22,000-plus Imperials made for '69 (4,572 LeBarons, and a mere 244 Crowns).
1969 was the last year for the pillared sedan, which was in the Crown series. All Imperials were LeBarons beginning in 1971, when Chrysler once again began advertising them as the Chrysler Imperial. Technically, Imperial was still registered as a separate brand until its run ended in 1975, but even after Imperial was taken out from under the wing of the Chrysler brand in 1955 a lot of people continued to call them "Chrysler Imperials", and so by the Seventies, Chrysler had pretty much given up on trying to convince them otherwise.
This car was really exciting to see. So glad you and Tim were able to show us this amazing super cruiser and take us floating along on the ride with you.
BTW, check out this dealership promo film for the 1969 Imperial. I think this will give you a lotta smiles per gallon! (Nice background music too.)

In 1976 my first car was a '68 Dodge Monaco. It had a worn out front seat. My Dad liked the
    "Fuselage" Chrysler
    "C" body cars.
And i can see the slight green tint in the black.
I was into the "B" body cars, as in the Charger and Satellite.
    I had a 72' Charger with a 6 pack, 440/472" 11:1 comp, engine and a hemi 4 speed, and a Dana rear axle.
    Back then the
"Mechanics" had trouble to making the 3 carbs work right, so alot of them were replaced with a single 4 barrel.
I found a few of those 6 pack manifolds, I built a 10:1 comp, 440/472" engine and installed it in my Dad's 73' Imperial, painted black top/gold sides.
(Knock em cold with black and gold)
    The cars still exist today.
They need aviation fuel, but still run HARD!
You don't see many of them on the street today, can you imagine a Imperial Lebaron running 12 second quarters?
My Charger ran in the high 10s !

When the light hits the body, I can tell that it is green, but it's a very, very dark green. I love those big, old cars. They just don't make cars like that any more. Just about the only big cars manufacturers are making, anymore, are Rolls Royces and Bentleys and they're just too expensive for us mere mortals. Thanks for posting the video, Lou. :)

Back in the late 80s when I was a young body man I did a repaint on a 69 Fury (same body style). Both quarte panels needed rust repair and dent work. Block sanding those huge quarters was A LOT of work. That was one car I was happy to get to see done !

That's probably the best-looking full-sized Big Three model for '69 ever. There are no frivilous designs on the exterior of this car of which I can see. If it didn't have a vinyl top, the roofline would have been even more harmonius with the rest of the body. Not to mention how these tops tended to eventually total the rest of the body, through moisture retention, if not either removed or redone in time. Without the top, it could have almost entered the Gentleman's full-sized Muscle Car class. Unfortunately, typical of post-'65 Chrysler products, the introduction of cheapened interior materials didn't do these cars justice and maybe even hampered sales of these

Chrysler Imperial is a car I've always loved for their often quirky styling, their rarity, and basic hugeness. Power vent windows were standard equipment for 1964, '65, '66 for all Crown and LeBaron models but Airtemp A/C was still an option, Lower priced Imperials were named. Imperial Crown, while the exclusive long wheelbase limousine was the Crown Imperial. In 1969 they were all LeBarons

Anyhow, back to Chrysler's answer to GM's Cadillac, and Ford's Lincoln... the Imperial. Beautiful car! I noticed years ago that NONE of the Big Three designed in much compartment space inside the car, usually just a glove box, and a little recepTICKLE in the console area. It wasn't until the Japanese became relevant in the auto industry in the 70s did the Big Three start to offer cup-holders, and driver-handy storage compartments in the doors for maps etc., in their vehicles.

11 year old me was quite excited to see spy photos of the upcoming Chrysler fuselage cars, from the Master Automotive Spy, the late Jim Dunne, in Popular Mechanics magazine. Chrysler styling moved into the modern jet-age with these cars. My very first car was a used Dodge Polara 4-door sedan, which happened to be a former police car. These cars were massive. Mine had a 383 4-barrel that drank a lot of premium. I swear that I could see the needle on the gas gauge go down as I drove it (too) quickly 😄. The B-52's song 'Love Shack' had great lyrics that kind of summed up these land yachts:
"I got me a Chrysler, it seats about twenty.
It's as big as a whale and it's about to set sail!"
    Yeah, that's about right 😂

Lou!! You missed the early climate control! That car was fully loaded. It was way more expensive than any Cadillac of the day! So nice to see. Fun fact, the 440 in the Imperials only produced 350 hp rather than the 375 of the other Chrysler's. Why? Chrysler used the 440 for it's torque, because little could be done to motivate that car down the road other than a supercharger or turbo! So, Chrysler ran a single exhaust and low input air intake, to save a few bucks in the build. People didn't buy Imperials for speed, they bought them for comfort.

The mighty Chrysler Imperial. Walter P. would love this '69... Mark III Continentals and '69 Imperials are two of the best car designs ever drafted.
