On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 7-28-21.
We're looking at a 1963 Pontiac Catalina in White Paint. The car comes with the 421 CI V8 “HO” engine and manual 4 speed transmission.
The car's Owner is Russ Toms. Russ has had this car since 2005. Russ shared he started with a 1958 Pontiac and always enjoyed the Brand.
ENJOY!

It is such a shame what GM did to Pontiac & Olds. Thanks for having such an information packed video, on such an excellent vehicle " with the right amount of pedals".
Hi Bill, Happy to share this car with you, and glad this one has the right amount of pedals too :-) Lou
Agree ... Donahue would be upset with how they ditched pontiac
Wow ! What a beautiful Catalina Lou and white with the 4 speed doesn’t get any better ! Russ has himself an incredibly rare car and it’s easy to see from his smile it means alot to him… wish it was mine !!
Hi Richard, Happy to receive a "Wow !" from you :-) Lou
A "sleeper" for sure!! I love how the back end was still retaining a hint of the "fins of the fifties"!
Thanks for sharing this one with us, Lou......... I'm always impressed with your connections!
Hi George S, Happy to share this car with you, and glad that you like this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
Bench seat 4 speed and dog dish hub caps this one checks all the the boxes for me.
Hi Gary, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) Lou
A good cup of coffee and some My Car Story with Lou. What a great way to start a Sunday! Thanks Lou.
Hi Mike, Happy to read you enjoy starting the day with a video :-) You're welcome, and glad you're along for the ride, Lou
Read my mind their Mike, I was just posting and thought, oh a cup of coffee would be tasty right now and looked down at your post...haha..off to the coffee maker I go - enjoy.
Insanely gorgeous car!! '63 was one of the most beautiful Pontiacs.
High praise :-)
Beautiful Catilina.
Of all the Pontiac big block configurations the 421 HO is by far my favourite engine.
This is a stunning example of a Pre muscle car era muscle car.
GREAT VIDEO LOU.
Hi TCT9MM, Happy to read you enjoy this "stunning example" :-) Lou
Absolute Beauty AND The Beast combined.
Just the way we like it :-)
Amazing. This Catalina is both show and go! The interior trim looks fantastic, too! Mr. Toms definitely knows his cars. Thanks for visiting with him again on the channel, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, High praise :-) You're welcome, and my pleasure showing his cars. Good news! There will be one more, so stay tuned, Lou
Hi Lu; Wow, you finally do my favorite car, a 1963 full size Pontiac! This is a beautiful Catalina and a fun to drive car with a 4 speed manual. And it's white.
63 Pontiacs have always had a place in my heart since I was a lad on 9 and my dad bought a used Strato Chief (Canadian entry level) from a man in external affairs who had to move out of country. This was in 65. The car was in like new condition (I went with dad to look at it) ok, it was a 4 door, six cyl, powerglide, but to me it was beautiful. It was white with blue interior.
In the glove box was an invitation to visit the GM plant in Oshawa to see cars being built. So we made a trip to go. Even at 9 I was most interested in watching 1965 Pontiacs and Chevrolet's being built and tested, it was an experience I will never forget. I love the look and style of a 63 Pontiac whether it's a Strato Chief, Catalina, Bonneville, GP etc. I've studied Pontiacs both Canadian and US. Love them all. I like all the 60s but 63 is my fave. Thank you and the owner for sharing this beauty. Sorry for long comment.
Hi Daniel, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I never saw your versions ours were mostly two door hard tops 4 bbl 389’s I only saw a hand full of 4 speeds ours out here on the west coast were built in Los Angeles
Pontiac was noted for superior ride and handling due to wide track! Great car with great and simple style!
Hi Jeffrey, Thank you for sharing, and glad to read you enjoy this "Great car" :-) Lou
Another gr8 Pontiac Lou! Back when Poncho's were kings of the road.
Hi Audie, Happy to share this Pontiac with you and glad you think this one is a "g8 Pontiac" :-) Lou
This one is off the charts - one of my favorite all time cars! Love the sleeper look especially. Bravo guys, home run!
Hi Bruce H., High praise :-) Lou
I LOVE THIS CAR, GREAT INTERIOR, THANKS LOU
Hi Robert, Happy to read "I LOVE THIS CAR" :-) You're welcome, Lou
I do think although this is not a car I've seen before, it is a true beauty. And that idle! Almost as nice as the revving. Thanks Lou
Hi kiddycat17, Happy to read you enjoy this looks and the way this one purrs :-) You're welcome, Lou
Beautiful Catalina! What a great piece of automotive history.
Very understated and definitely a sleeper.
Thanks for bringing it to us Lou!
Hi Jeff, High praise :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you, and you're welcome, Lou
Love the wide tracks, used to have 2 64s.
Happy to read you enjoy this one :-)
‘63 Tin Indian Catalina 421! My favorite Pontiac of all time. Not familiar with the HO 421 though.
Even signed by Arnie Beswick the legendary Pontiac drag racer.
Hi Kim, Happy to read "My favorite Pontiac of all time." :-) Lou
Yeah Brother! You seem to know just what we like to see, car brothers that GET IT!
Happy to read you're enjoying the selection of car I share with you :-) Glad you're along for the ride!
Great Pontiac Lou ! An absolute Freight Train ! Thanks for posting !
Hi Rudy, Get out of the way of the "Freight Train!" :-) You're welcome, Lou
This car just sounds STRONG! What a thing of beauty! Love the driving segments as well as all the details. Thanks Lou!
Hi cookcars1, Happy to read you enjoy the sounds, looks, and ride along in this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
Hi, Lou! If you're a Pontiac fan, you've got exceptional taste! Russ mentioned how this car was designed to look like a convertible, and if you look right above the rear window you'll notice a crease stamped into the trailing edge of the roof that further emphasizes the look. The contemporary Chevy Impala two-door hardtop also carried this feature.
Another interesting note is the Ventura trim option. The Ventura had started out as a two-model series in 1960 and 1961 (two- and four-door hardtops) just a step above the Catalina, then for 1962 was turned into a luxury trim option for the Catalina, basically to make room for the new Grand Prix. It continued as such through 1970, after which the Ventura name was applied to a Chevy Nova clone.
This car is literally white lightning! Are you over the whiplash yet? LOL! Thanks to you and Russ for taking us along on this High Output ride on the Wide Track!
Hi iswc27, Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Happy to read you enjoy this "White Lightning" :-) You're welcome, and glad you're along for the ride, Lou
Another great video Lou. I learn something new from every one of your videos. I was wondering what the difference between the 421H.O. and the Super Duty was when I seen the title of this video and now I know. My Uncle said he used to see these cars on the dragstrips alot in the 1960s and 1970s but you don't see any around anymore. Guess they probably didn't build a whole lot of them.
Hi PlymouthDuster225, I'm learning from the Care Takers every video, and I find that to be so much fun :-) Glad this one brings back memories of your Uncles stories :-) Lou
The HO 421, new for 63, was a hot street engine option. The Super Duty 421 was introduced in 1961 as a replacement crate motor only, later installed by Pontiac in a handful of 62 and 63 Pontiacs. The Super Duty 421 had compression as high as 12.1, wild cams, very costly extra "Super Duty" parts designed for racing stress and was not a useful street engine. When GM withdrew from factory racing in 64 the Super Duty 421 went away.
@@melodigrand I kinda thought that might have been why it went away but wasn't sure
I love the design... so uncluttered! In those years there was no government intervention on design. That would change just 10 years later.
Hi drippinglass, Happy to read you enjoy the design of this one :-) Lou
Thank you Lou for featuring Pontiacs! I love your show
Hi PLMCRZY67, My pleasure sharing this Pontiac with you, and I appreciate your kind words on the show :-) Lou
What a gorgeous car. Such beautiful white paint (even on the wheels) and what a thumper under the hood. And the right amount of pedals to really make it a blast to drive. That sound, too. I'd lose my license driving that thing because I'd always want to hear that sweet music.
Hi Watch and Look Up!, High praise for the looks and sound of this car :-) Lou
Beautiful Catalina!!
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this one :-)
Never heard of a four speed on a Catalina!! My family all had Pontiacs.....BONNEVILLES and CATALINAS. My grandmother had a 60 Catalina for years. Very solid car.....Very smooth riding car!!

Awesome Lou, one of my favorites for sure. Sounds great!
Hi Ed B., Happy to read this is a favorite :-) Lou
I had a job with someone who owned one of these new. At lunch time we took a drive down Carnegie Avenue at a high rate of speed. Truly exciting to see buildings wizzing by on a city street with acceleration pushing you back in the seat. Big, Loud and Fast!

Thanks Lou. Growing up my neighbor had a somewhat similar car in the ‘63 Gran Prix with 421 - triple-deuce engine.
Happy to read this one brings back memories of the neighbors car. You're welcome Matt's Kustom Kreations :-)
Impresionante este Pontiac Catalina de 1963. Y con un hermoso color además. Su motor y aceleración son sorprendentes. Es una lástima que Pontiac haya desaparecido, hacía inolvidables coches... Saludos!
Hi Jaime, Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Beautiful car. As a kid in 1967 I had a neighbor who owned one of these and drag raced it pretty regularly.
Hi Kevin, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your neighbors car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
You know a car is special when you see a Hurst badge on it lol!!! This car has just enough detail and the right amount of pedals to make it go fast and be comfy doing it!!! I have a feeling you wouldn't want to challenge this baby at a stop light!! Very nice car!!!
Hi Hobiemarty, Happy to read the details you enjoy with this car :-) Lou
I put Hurst badges on all my cars
Once upon a time I really didn't like dog dish hub caps. However now they're growing on me....
Another rare beauty. Happy motoring Russ 🏁
Hi Terry M, Cars have an amazing way of looking better with age. Happy to read you appreciate the rarity of this car :-) Lou
This is great !!!
Uncle had a '64 LeMans, 326 and a 3 speed. Scared me half to death :)
'81 wife and family go to Victoria.
So many Catalina's badged Parisieens lost count..
RIP, Pontiac
Hi Glen, Happy to read "This is great !!! " :-) Glad to read this car brings back memories of your Uncles car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Big body Pontiacs of the 60s, gotta love em. Horsepower, function, and great lines !
Hi Peter, Thank you for sharing what you see, Lou
WHAT A TREASURE !
Altered my blood pressure on sight
Hi Charlie, NICE ! Lou
1959 was the introductory year for the "Wide Track" Pontiac. I don't know if the track was any wider than the Buicks or Oldsmobiles, but their design sure made them appear wider - and their artwork department made them appear even wider in the magazine ads and dealer catalogs. Nice car Russ. Our Dad bought a new Catalina sedan in 1960, then, 5 years later, a '65 GTO tri-power. Norm in Branchville, NJ
They did have wider tracks
@@rsstrazz6261 Yes - anywhere from 2 to 4 inches wider than the other GM products.

*GLUG, GLUG, GLUG, GLUG, GLUG, VROOOOOM!!* 😎
I just love that pull forward by every gear shift. Sure, modern sport cars are faster, but it's this Catalina that makes you feel like a king. You see the imposing long hood, you feel the push into the seats and you enjoy every vibration and sound the car makes. Truly irreplaceable feeling and a huge reason we all love these classics. You don't need a prancing horse badge on your car to feel exceptionality, luxury, joy, power and excitement, because a Pontiac like this makes a great rodeo too!!
The Ventura interior is so classy with it's white stripes on the red seats. The Pontiac badges are such a cool decoration too. And the Catalina name? You Americans just have a taste, when coming up with names for cars 😍
Hi Cheeky Demon, Happy to read the sounds and details you enjoy with this car :-) Lou
Wow that’s a beautiful back end on this car
Happy to receive a "Wow" from you :-)
H.O.! H.O.! H.O.! What a great early Christmas present! Thanks Lou!
NICE Brian SD :-) You're welcome.
Absolutely beautiful Pontiac. I have a 1960 Catalina that I drag race and a 1962 Grand Prix that I hope to be able to restore someday.

I actually purchased a new 1963 pontaic special order catalina sport coupon 4 speed 389 4 barrel ventura interior with bucket seats and no console. It was white also. I was drafted in December of 63 and had to sell it. It was a great car. We were a pontaic family and I loved that car.
Hi Frank, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I was a Pontiac guy, also.that's a really nice Catalina. Fast, too. Like the redlines.
Hi Don, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) Lou
That Pontiac sure would be a blast to drive!
Hi Dave, A fun one for sure :-) Lou
My 1964 Pontiac Catalina 421 2+2 convertible came with a factory 4 speed and bucket seats. I really was not a car guy per se, so I am not extremely knowledgeable, but I do still own the title and the car. Sitting stored outside for the last forty years.
Hey Lou. Great video!!

Hi Craig, Happy to read this car brings back memories of Russ's car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
That sound is all business!!
Just the sounds we enjoy :-)
Love that sound brings back memories of childhood brother had 61 or 62 Catalina dark blue tri power on it and 4speed we would take it out of the garage my dad and I because my brother was in the air force for 4years so my dad and would take it out of the garage and drive it once a month " the smell the sounds was great:" I miss those days"
Hi gumby, Happy to read the sounds from this car bring back memories :-) Good news! You're on the right CZcams Channel for bringing those cars you enjoy back, Lou
I really enjoyed the opportunity to go along for a ride in that beautiful big white 421 Catalina, Wide Trackin! Here in Canada, we got cheated out of most of what Pontiac had to offer through that era, we got Chevrolet’s with Pontiac styling cues and badging, but none of the good stuff, just Chevrolet drives trains across the board, most being 6’s and 283’s, and the odd 327 or 409.
Hi James, Glad to take you along for the ride, Lou
I believe this car shares the roof panel with a 63 and 64 Impala. As they are driving along with all the windows down, they are right, that open air feeling is incredible. I enjoyed it yesterday in my 64 Galaxie fastback. The pillars on these cars were so small, even the rear or B pillar was small and didn't create a big blind spot. Take a young car guy out in a car like this and they will usually comment on it once you stop pinning them to the seat.

Had to look at the 6:46 mark on your video to make sure, but was shocked to see a power steering pump on a 421 HO Catalina with the 4 speed manual. That is a very rare set-up for these old Pontiacs. You could also order your Pontiac with a 3 speed manual on the column in 1963.

For the day and its time was a beast no doubt, but when the RAII-IV engines came along that was the go to cars. [Pontiac had some real machines that stood Out over the other GM products IMO.

Great way to start my Sunday. Russ's Catalina is a real deceptive gem. Car enthusiasts know exactly what it is but most folks wouldn't have a clue of what's under the hood. Nice to see Russ and you grinning when he shifts gears. Thanks for bringing this forward to your viewing audience, Lou.
Hi Kevin, Happy to read watching this video is a great way to start your day :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you, and you're welcome, Lou
My 3 brothers each had a Pontiac 63 Bonneville 64 Catalina & Bonneville & 65 Catalina 4 speed conv
Now, *that's* a proper Pontiac!!!
NICE :-)

love it! a beautiful classic "sleeper" thanx lou!
Hi Mouse, Happy to read "love it!" :-) You're welcome, Lou
Well Lou, you've done it again! I almost forgot about the Catalina's and the 421.it was a beast! The impalas and Galaxy's and the bonnaville's got most of the attention. My grandma had a Catalina and my brother used it for a couple of weeks and when he gave it back he had painted her rims, put some "moon equipped, STP, and since we lived in North Jersey, an island dragway decal across the back window! She didn't have the 421,but I think it was a 326.good times, good memories and great video's. Thanx dude!
Well Eric, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Grandmas car :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou

Hi zeevon9, Happy to read you enjoy the sounds of this car. Glad to read you enjoy this fun ride with us :-) Lou
I had the Salmon color 1964 Pontiac Parisienne conv. back around 1972. Canada's version of the Catalina. We usually had the smaller 283s in them too. Some had the 327s though. We took a trip to LA in 1967 in our 1965 Parisienne, and when we got gas at a service station the attendant laughed when he opened the hood bc the motor was so SMALL!

Hi trainroomgary, Happy to read this one brings back memories of the ones you recall seeing :-) Cheers, Lou
I love the factory ride height of these early Catalina's....aggressive, they sit up and have good ground clearance -no scraping driveway entrances. I see musclecars lowered and it makes me cringe....I like the Level ride height but sitting up a couple of inches (not jacked up in the rear with meats though). Some of the Chevelle SS and later SS Impalas and Bel-airs did that as well too...love it, especially with dog dish low end hub caps and painted rims.....very nice!

In 1963 14 of the 77 421 Super duty cars got the swill cheese tratment to make them lighter. Back then each engine had a unique sound. 409, 413, 421 etc.
Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful 😍 Thanks Lou!
You're welcome motorTranz :-)
Well Lou Like the Sherlock Holmes of classic cars. It’s always a treat to see something that I never saw growing up too young to know about. And this indeed was a rare find. Keep up the good work my friend.

The super duty versions of these cars were also insane. Factory lightweights with Swiss cheese frames and aluminum front clips. Specifically for racing, Pontiac was the top of the heap for providing go fast stuff for the public who wanted to compete. The super duty program saw factory cars built for the strip and even the pikes peak events. Very cool!

My pleasure and you're welcome.
Hey big brother!! Hey Lou! As I sit here viewing this awesomeness in Brooklyn, NY as I'm about to get ready fro Sunday mass at St. Mark's-I got a big grin on my hyper Irish Catholic pretty boy mug lol. I would no doubt fire my floppy sneakers from my tubesocked stocking feet from at least 15 yards and hope you would catch 'em like footballs, Lou!!! lol :) ;) But WOW-what a beautiful Pontiac Catalina coupe. Love the pillar less side with the windows down-just beautiful, man. So much character and creativity and identity in cars of then. I miss Pontiac, big bro. These beauties were way before my time, but in the mid/late 80's when I was in Jr. High and High school Firebirds (and Camaros) were boss. Bonneville SSE's, too!!! Just sad to me how GM killed off such a storied brand. But so is life, huh? In the meantime-we have great guys like you and Russ there bringing these to us. Thanks Lou! :) JV baseball Johnny
Hey Brother JV Johnny, Happy to read this one gives you a grin :-) My pleasure sharing this one with you, Lou

Hi SeaTravelr123, Happy to read you have a fun car too :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
From my limited knowledge of Pontiacs, the Catalina was what we call in Australia the 'poverty pack'. If that's the case, this was a well equipped base trim level car. Great sounding engine with the windows down too.
Hi Mike, Happy to read you enjoy the sounds from this engine :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Always a Pontiac fan.
