- I analyze the plans for the siege of King's Landing and offer my own improved strategy based on historical precedent. In this video I also offer my own take on fixing the pivotal moments in Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 5 "The Bells" where Daenerys decides to burn the city and become the mother of ashes.

Black dragon... attack at night that's so simple, no amount of torches would allow them to see Drogon coming, especially in a dive
I could excuse a pitch black episode for that scenario.
@@Arkanthrall it's such an obvious strategy to completely ignore
At night if a dragon attacks, everyone in the shadows can instantly see him. Also, it deppends on the dragon agility and speed to avoid the ballistas, and the preparation must be perfect to locate every ballista ship, and every ballista on the city.
I really think they treated us like monkeys, to clap clap whatever they throw at us, and they failed.

Improved battle plan: Attack with Drogon at night. Imagine a dragon that's hidden by the darkness and only visible when breathing fire. Now that's a realistic plan that doesn't require nerfing the scorpions.
The more fires are lit the more visible the dragon gets through, one good shot would be enough to ground drogon
@@Dantick09 But the fires would be lit in areas that are already destroyed anyways. She only needed one pass along each section of the wall, and then move on the next, still dark sections.
Dantick09 if they couldn’t hit him in the day... they definitely will not hit him at night
@@Dantick09 Drogon just needs to go around in a circle to get all the scorpions and then the city is fucked. Odds are as well that panic would ensue and they wouldn't even be able to properly get a shot off.

Tanner Healy no just not.
hell just using the dragons to breach all the gates and a few other spots i think the army would have given up, cersi not so much
That was Yara's plan. Dany should have never listened to Tyrion.
Maybe having Rhaegal dying in the Kings Landing battle, and then Danny going off mad would've made more sense
The crossbow shot from the child (Invicta's idea) could've killed him. Would make sense - Dany going absolutely mad for just losing her child and because it was "people of King's Landing" that did it and they hate her.
The dragons seem to be exactly as powerful, or a weak, as the writers need them to be at that moment. This type of thing kills me. So disappointed in the writing of this final season.
Also the number of troops, the accuracy of the scorpions and the intelligence of characters seem to vary just as writers needs them to be. Just lazy and indifferent writing.
Yep, the writers just change the rules of the universe, the nature of the main characters - everything - to get the story to arrive at some point they've decided it needs to reach. It's lazy and dumb. Exactly the opposite of why people fell in love with this series in the first place.
They actually just fucked Rheagals death. Shouldn't have been done that way. It established the scorpions (who were shitty before and throughout history) as deadly. Without that scene/a modified scene, it would have been fine. So they are actually not all over the place but they couldn't bother to think through that death scene..... I think the powerlvl against KL was actually spot on and also consider GRRM thinks of his dragons as nuclear weapons. Fuck those shitty scorpions.
When she flys over the golden company after the initial burning of the front gate all of the scorpions have the perfect shot on her as she flys off. If she's going to take down a whole city with a dragon at least make it look like she has to think about her actions and the iron fleet went from working together as one with flurrys of siege fire in an ambush to one ship firing one bolt at a time when defending a city
Marmocet yeah its even said in the book that dragon scales were as “hard as steel” and that the very three dragons Vhagar, Miraxes and the black dread would fly through storms of arrows and spears barley being harmed. Miraxes only died because the scorpion bolt hit it in its eye which of course is not covered by scales. Although it is only full grown dragons which have scales this thick so it is plausible.

@@dashrirprock They didn't, the speed at which it happened was intentional and fitting. Yes, she postures herself as a savior but this is years of her being at war, her best friend and dragon(aka her child) were just killed in front of her, she has been reminiscing about how Meereen overthrew their leaders for her without her help to initiate her reign while King's Landing has rallied around Cersei, and on top of that she sees her closest allies doing shady shit around her back and feels like terror is her only tool. If you think about it for more than half a second Dany's choice makes more sense than anything she's done since walking into Drogo's bonfire
@@thekillers1stfan Yeah, it makes perfect sense -- except a "choice" is not madness. A calculation to let them fear is not the paranoia and sadism of what had been established in the Targaryen line. Oh, and it also got her killed half-way into the next episode. She locked up two of her "best friends" aka "children" for killing one innocent child. Perhaps Jon will next slaughter non-combatants en masse now that he's decided Daenerys is bad and doesn't deserve to live. Thanks for your deep thoughts.
@@thekillers1stfan
I think you are wrong about this. Dany has shown signs of becoming a tyrant and will likely be so in the books but the way they portrayed it is...sloppy at best
The simple fact is that her brutality in the past had meaning. She murdered those she considered evil and even though an evil act, you understood her perspective.
There was no greater good being the slaughter of kings landing. She simply unleashed her anger upon the citizens. She could have taken kings landing without doing so, she could have focused on killing Cersei then at least the deaths within the keep had a reason. Unleashing dragon fire through the city serves nothing
Her killing civilians was nothing but a contrived way to end her story quickly. The novels will likely handle it in a way that is gradual, and have a more nuanced situations where you could actually understand her point of view.
The writers tried to make it sound like she wanted to "rule through fear" but her motivations to do so were simply unclear. Kings landing was already ruled by a hated tyrant, they were ripe to ralley behind a liberator as those in Mareen were. Should she have accepted the surrender, she would have been in a far better situation as queen.
Simply put, all this stems from rushed story telling, no time to add any nuance or inner conflict to make her inevitable snap believable.

Who would win:
A city defended by 20 to 30 thousand men with strong walls, artillery, and provisions
OR
A flying lizard with spicy breath.
Spicy
Much Spicy
That depends, can this artillery hit a flying lizard travelling 80km/h from behind a rock 1500m away 3 times in a row without missing?
Depends on dragon armor and range, but assuming like show, (a) penetrable like any realistic chance of one hit kill or flight-disrupting wound, (as night king one-shotted and Bron disrupted flight) and (b) artillery range at least on par with fire, then the strong artillery. Shoot him as he approaches.
Stats: according to first 15 sec of czcams.com/video/_q7_37YcvKs/video.html ... drogon has ~55m wingspan, ~80% wingspan of 747. Prbly sim length btw, at least if excluding tail length. Ballistas from Rome range 100 yds. Drogon's not hitting much more than 100 yds I think. You go try to hawk a lugi 6 ft away from a wall, marking your target 6 ft off the ground. See if you can spit as far away as your own height. See if you can double it. (or wingspan, since human wingspan and height are similar; 747 length and wingspan are different but only by about 10% realistically, Drogon's not spitting, so breathing fire, much further than twice his own wingspan). Of course the dragon wins if it can breathe fire way further than the ballista range. But that's not the way it looks in the show one bit, so of course the many ballistas will hit lucky shots and kill the dragon 10 or 20 vs 1.
Improved battle plans: Battle of the Blackwater.
I want to see Stannis be victorious for once!!
The battle of the blackwater could not have been improved. Well, in the show maybe but not in the books.
Blackwater was intelligently done because Dumber and Dumber had still had source material by an actually good writer to adapt.
Tough for Stannis to come out on top in that one since his main reason for losing is the arrival of Mace and The Reach banners instead of a tactical blunder.

remember when shit like this was fleshed out instead of being squashed into a few episodes?
Andrei Skobtsov Yeah I dont remember any of that. Clips please. Because all I remember is her telling Dothraki not to rape girls, that the unsullied should only harm slave masters, that she wanted to end slavery cuz it was wrong, and when olenna told her to burn KL she said no. And when those nobles surrendered she game them a chance to join her, if they didn’t want to then that was on them.
And there was actual buildup and reasons behind Avery’s’ fall to into madness. Most of his family died in a fire. All but three of his kids were stillbirths, miscarriages, or died as infants. People talked shit about him behind his back, saying his friend was better than him. And he was betrayed and held captive by a bannerman. Here's a suggested alternative ending I read somewhere: Have both the dragons survive until now (no 360 no scope in episode 4). Everything goes the same until the bells otherwise. Then, while the bells are ringing, a lucky shot (maybe by a civilian like suggested) kills one of the dragons. The people of King's landing cheer at its death because the dragons had inevitably caused also civilian deaths when destroying the scorpios. Enraged at the people cheering the killing of her beloved "child", Daenerys finally loses it and starts burning the cheering crowds.
I can live with this idea, drama wise it can justify her rage and incoming madness
THIS! It would have been a much more fitting death for Rhaegal.
God damn that would have been PERFECT!
So Euron cant hit a injured dragon in a ambush but a civilian could hit a less injured dragon... ?
@@PrintableCD1997 I think they should have injured but not killed Rhaegal, because that small ambush seemed entirely escapable. Then someone hits Rhaegal in the city. Civilian, soldier, whoever
I still dont know why cerci didnt just kill dany during the talk when has she ever showed any honor
Yup... that scene was dumb
I mean Drogon was just Standing their behind Dany exposed an im sure theirs like 8-10 Scorpions, plus a hundred archers. pointed at him an Dany. Cersei could just take the chance an shoot him and Dany. An end the war right their an then too be honest.
An Dany has like a contingent of Men with her all Cersei have too do is just open the gate and out comes hundreds of mounted knights and Men at Arms running at them an easily overwhelm.
@@InvictaHistory unfortunately the whole season is dumb
@@silentecho92able I guess we're supposed to believe that the scorpions can't shoot that far.. and realistically they shouldn't be able to shoot that far but after what we've seen against Rhaegal and the fleet in episode 4, they definitely CAN shoot that far..

Revised battle plan for Cerci's side:
"Use all 20,000 men of the Golden Company mentioned in previous episodes, rather than just positioning 100 of them to stand outside the city walls gawking"
Horrible defensive strategy for a horrible offensive. I like your style.

It's clear that it was not George who wrote this. This season makes no sense whatsoever. I could stand the Night King falling in just one battle because of time and funds. Davide Bic Rhaegal
D&D were offered 2 seasons to wrap everything up but only used 1 because they wanted to start directing Star Wars (which ended up falling through)
Not to mention the fact that scorpions were by no means a wonder weapon against dragons. The only time one was able to take down a dragon was by shooting it straight through the eye...

Are you fucking serious? His ideas for "fixing" the episode are completely retarded. A child firing an scorpion and Daenarys just doing nothing? Someone "flipping a coin" at the end of the episode? That's idiotic.
And apparently he doesn't even pay attention to the show. Not all kingdoms are bendign the knee, Sansa and the North doesn't want her as Queen. And as soon as other kingdoms know she's not the one with a legitimate claim, nobody will bend the knee. So yes, inspiring fear to other cities is one possible explanation.
Having a CZcams channel doesn't qualify anybody to be a professional writer.
@@j.f.l.bousquet1998 You're wrong here, but Invicta forgot about cities or castles, which would surrender due to fear of getting sacked.
He could be a good battle adviser but not a good writer. The idea with the child firing a scorpion is too much.
(Not that the actual episode was better)
@@j.f.l.bousquet1998
She literally controls all of the seven kingdoms, even since season 7.
Jon is the ruler of North and he bent the knee, Grey Worm conquered the Rock and the Reach, the Dorne, the Vale, the Stormlands, the Isles and Rivers are allies to Daenerys.
Only Kings Landing is in Cersei's hands.
@@baab4229 Maybe not a child, but an adult civilian could have the same effect. Regardless, even if people role their eyes at that singular moment, the rest of his ideas are very good.
The idea of her just attacking the Red Keep in rage (which is much more plausible) only to actually set off the wild wire stashed by her crazy dad and become what she never wanted to out of a momentary lapse of judgement (but not outright insanity)...that's good shit right there. Tragic and sad as a fan, but well crafted and understandable; which is the epitome of GoT if you think about it. The current story that she just went bonkers for petty reasons after being a defender of the people the rest of the show made no sense. It is simply not believe able and thus ruins the impact of what she did.
The Mad King Arys wasn't just her ancestor. He was her dad.
He wasn't her father, but he was her daddy
In the books, he is her grandfather. In the show, he is her father.
@@fernandocoutogarcia4720 nah, Aerys is the father of Rhaegar, Viserys and Daenerys. Maybe you are confused with Jaehaerys, father of Aerys and Rhaella and the one who said that phrase about Targaryens and coins
And????
Your proposed redo was my exact solution to the episode! It felt so good to imagine the poetic justice of Daenaerys INADVERTENTLY destroying the city, or simply have Cersei blow up the wildfire as a last-ditch FU to Daenaerys successfully taking the city. Either way we get the same tragedy, but it makes Dany a more tragic character rather than the "insane" one we have now. That way she could potentially give up the queenship willingly, out of understanding that she was unworthy and find someone more worthy to sit on the throne.
Daenerys' dragon attack would've made sense if she attacked at night or something, with low visibility for scorpions to fire. And I agree they could have made the battle a lot more creative.
People would be pretty pissed about another dark battle episode, no matter that it would make tactical sense.
@@jasong4460 Not as pissed as they were about the episode
The dragonfire and natural lights would be enough to see whats going on. They artificially darkened ep3
Would be even funnier if archers knew it's pointless and tiring to hold a bow drawn for long periods of time but they had to do it cause Cercei demanded so, or they'd be executed.
And then ones arm gets tired, releasing an arrow like in the beginning of the battle of helms deep, giving reason to danys reaction
cercei: draw
archers draw their bows
Cercei: ...
archers: ...
Cercei: ...
archers: ma'am we ca...
Cerei: did i say you could speak?
archers: ...
arm gets tired and looses, proceeds to get dragged away screaming for mercy.
Did archers typically only draw once command was given to loose? I guess that they didn't draw and hold aim in wait because their arm would grow tired, thus aim/power would be compromised? Had never thought about this before...
your fan fiction endings give me the satisfaction I've been missing from the episodes. Thanks
These are ridiculously good videos: thanks for making them! If you haven't done them already, a series on the campaigns of Belisarius would be amazing.

That moment when invicta is a much better screenwriter than the ones hired by HBO
D&D are nothing more than fanfic aswell
He's not a better screenwriter. It's piss easy to take something after the fact and "fix" it. Nearly anyone can do it when 99% of the work is already done for you. But people confuse that ability with being better writers which is not in any way true. If he was a better writer, he'd be the one making some hit show, not D&D.
I'm no fan of how the show has gone but I'm tired of people making out like the writers are just awful or the "worst writers of the modern era". They're not. They're highly talented. They clearly just gave up and don't care anymore and want to move onto something new so they're rushing it and can't put their full effort into the project anymore. The attention to detail and love and care shown before, is gone because they're jaded. At least that is how it seems.
You can write absolute turd but it doesn't mean you ARE a bad writer. Same as how you can BE an asshole but it doesn't mean you ARE one. Two seasons out of 8 are rushed and very poorly thought out. That doesn't make them poor writers overall.
Also I know you're just making a joke for laughs but I'm just sick of hearing people bash on the writers so much, despite myself hating the way the show has gone.
Jhakaro the show immensely lost quality after the sourcematerial of the books were missing.
Making D&D good in working out good scripts with given material, but not as writing themselves
@@Jhakaro *_THIS!_* Why do people immediately jump to the conclusion that DnD are drooling, self-defecating troglodytes, who would use a fork to drink soup to "surprise the audience," when it's clearly a case of them intentionally simplifying the plot to reach the largest demographic to cash in on the fame before dumping the show for an even bigger cash cow to milk (Star Wars)? It's such a fucking obvious deduction, I don't know why people are so quick to dismiss malice as stupidity, Game of Thrones should've taught them already that it's nearly always the former.
It's much easier to criticize what another has created than to create something yourself.
I think drogon's assault on the town walls should have been accompanied by an assault of infantry and archers to distract the defenders and to suppress the scorpion crews allowing Drogon to destroy the defenses with little risk to the dragon

The description of the final part of your fanfic gave me actual chills. It's almost like you put thought into the symbolism and writing, unlike some people.
That potential coin flipping ending of the episode is so awesome! It is terrible how bad this season is.
Fucking seriously. A fifth episode devoting basically all the screentime to the brutality of an _actual_ siege. Long, demoralizing, bloody, with a cliffhanger on Dany's snap and accidental chain-reaction-razing of the city (dramatic soap-opera-style reaction shots galore). Then the sixth episode, dour, hopeless, dark, with her struggling to regain confidence from all her allies who now doubt her sanity. Stick all the dramatic shit with the Hound, Cersei, and Jaime here, right as the Red Keep collapses from the strain of molten dragon fire. Dany can't even defend herself honestly, since she deliberately and intentionally scorch-earthed Red Keep to the ground, who could know she wouldn't have continued regardless of the (accidental) wildfire? Then the last scene (I suggest her execution/coronation, doesn't matter really). Cruelty of luck, inevitability of fate, Targaryens, whatever you want the coinflip to represent, and credits. Brilliant shit in comparison to DnD's rushed fanservice garbage.
Well with this latest patch that nerfed Qyburn's ballista's making it as accurate as a stormtrooper's bullet I honestly don't see how the siege could have been improved.
Actually I think the dragon part was realistic. I'm basing my knowledge on being flight sim and history nerd. What Dany did with her dragon was essentially dive bombing from the sky. The scorpions are clearly unable to aim exactly up. And as she descends to sea level, other vessels decide to not shoot either in dissarray or not wanting to cause collateral damage. Lead vessel shoots by order of Euron(he can't give the same order to the other vessels because they are too far), but by quite simple flight maneuvers she dodges the missiles launched at her, locates the lead boat and burnes it down.
@@TealJosh I agree with this as well. The idea that the dragon as "a divebomber" could have done the job shown, and the history of Targaryen conquering is "dragons are unbeatable". The issue comes down to optics for the user. We literally go from the scorpions sniping a dragon and ripping a fleet apart, to never even scratching drogon. While it could actually be realistic, its very hard for the audience to accept that when you spent a lot of screen time trying to convince them otherwise.
Luckily stormtroopers dont shoot "bullets"
The dragon that died by those bolts was caught unaware.
Danny learned from her mistake and expected them. A very fast moving target is really hard to hit with a single bolt.
Plus as soon as you see those a boat burning you are less likely to want to fight and more likely want to run!
GTpcGaming Also when Rheagal was shot down he was ambushed by Euron's fleet and had injured wings making him unable to fly as well so the scenarios are not quite the same.
Well done, love the poetic nature of your alternative events!

Saaaame even listening to it gave me the chills!!
Was just about to say- what a fantastic ending. A sad state though when a CZcamsr comes up with an ending to the worlds most popular series, that is much better than the actual end
Except she is supposed to end up ruthless and bloody and insane. She's always been foreshadowed as that, and had an entire arc in the latest book which ended by her rejecting peace and compromise for fire and blood.
Bohin The Chills were very real. Thats how I knew I loved it haha
It may be better, but it would change the lore that J R R Martin himself intented since season 1, she wouldn't be the mad queen anymore, just poor queen who has done misscalculations with her dragon, nobody could now judge her for the burning of king'slanding anymore because it was not her original intentions.
That finale... BRAVO! BRAVO! AMAZING
Love your suggested ending. Spot on!!! An order of magnitude above what was written and presented.
Your improvements are 10x smarter. The wildfire explosive could trigger the sacking of kings landing by daenarys forces😂😂
Not only that, but it could have given Jamie a chance to choose between his love of Cersei and the citizens of King's landing again. Cersei could have revealed to Jamie that her plan is to blow Dany's forces up with wildfire, and Jamie at that moment realizes that she needs to be stopped. Thus he becomes both the kingslayer and the Queenslayer.
