    Thank you so much... I’ve been driving 39 years with a clean licence and I’m booked on my speeding awareness course the end of March. I’ve been so nervous not knowing what to expect. I took my eye off the ball and got caught doing 35mph in a 30mph zone. So this has really eased my mind thank you again. I certainly think I will gain information from it... 👍🏻🙏🏻

      Hi, I am doing a study in relation to people who have participated in a driver retraining program to gather information about the benefits and outcomes they experienced. Can you please answer the following few questions:
      1. How long ago did you complete the course?
      2. How would you describe your overall experience with the driver retraining program?
      3. What specific skills or knowledge did you acquire or improve upon through the program?
      4. In what ways do you feel the driver retraining program has positively impacted your driving abilities?
      5. Have you noticed any changes in your driving behaviors or habits as a result of the program? If so, could you describe them?
      6. Have you experienced any tangible benefits or improvements in your driving since completing the program (e.g., reduced accidents, fewer traffic violations)?
      7. Would you recommend this driver retraining program to others? If so, what would be the main reasons for your recommendation?

    One way to make young people aware about braking: we all (as kids) must have used a patch of ice as a skating strip just wearing shoes, when you come to a halt you nearly always feel you are going to fall over, or you actually fall over, that's because there is more grip at slow speeds, if the grip was the same, why don't you fall over in the middle of the skid.
    One thing i was taught by my dad was to try driving from A to B (journey to work etc) without using brakes (obviously you use brakes once you stop or when you absolutely have to), but it makes you slow down, keep your distance, and be more in control
    btw, my driving lessons started in the lorry my dad used to drive, i went with him during school holidays, learned the dangers of cars and lorries, the idiotic car drivers etc, i was about 13/14 years old.

    I think some people need to calm down and get some perspective, its obvious that Ricks speeding was a honest mistake that he got caught out for. its self evident that if you have been driving for regularly 27 years without any incidents you are a safe driver who respects and obeys the rules of the road and does not pose a risk to other road users. I and I'm sure many others are very appreciative that Rick took the time to share this with us, in his usual cheery, informative and fair way.

      Stephen I used to drive 40 in a 30 and when I came to a driver doing 30 I used to get angry..That is so wrong it's a shame that you can't go on a speed awareness course on your own merit but if you are a good driver then you should update your driving skills as I have done and always stick to the speed limit its for safety and nothing else.

    Thanks for that. I was doing 69mph in an overtaking lane on the A59. I overtook the car in front who was doing about 50mph & went into the left lane & slowed down to 60mph. The 'speed camera' was just in the position to catch people like me. In my eyes, this is entrapment! I used the power of my Audi S5 to overtake as quickly as possible & slow down to the correct speed. How is this fair? There were no pedestrians around, I had a clear road infront of me & if I didn't put my foot down I could have caused more mayhem. When will the government realise that cars have got a lot safer & it's just stupid drivers who do not use indicators (BMW's) & people who only look 2 foot beyond their bonnet are the real cause of the deaths & serious accidents on our roads. All the best & thanks again.

    • @rickvanman
      @rickvanman  Před rokem +2

      Agreed. I was so angry when I realised the circumstances of my own experience. A FOI request revealed that the speed limit there had recently been lowered and everything about where I got caught, absolutely stank of intentional entrapment. I genuinely felt like I had been legally mugged.

    I did one 2 weeks ago and it was very very good, similar to you Rick I haven't had any offences for 36 years my last one was a endorsement in 1981, thesis one was for 2mph over but it is what it is and there's nothing you can do, the bit where you explain about the difference in 30 and 32 mph is called kinetic energy the best way to show this is to put a can of beans or something on your passenger seat, drive down the road at whatever the limit is and I must point out only do this bit if it's ABSOLUTELY safe to do so, then brake as hard as you can and take note to the point where the can ends up in the footwell, it is always at the point when you have completely stopped. But well said my friend the course is well worth doing and I would recommend it to anyone who gets the opportunity.

    Good stuff. I have to do a course in three days and the ironic thing is, is that my car has a small road speed indicator camera which will tell you the road speed for any road you're on. Had I noticed it I would have dropped my speed down from 57 to 50mph. But I'm glad you aren't made to 'stand up in class' at least.

    Hi Rick. Interesting video. Provoked a mixed bag of reactions. I got caught last year. 36 in a 30 in an unfamiliar location. Turns out a month later they made it a 40. I feel cheated by it all but I'm of the thought if you do something wrong you take the consequences. I too found the course of use. It refreshes some points that are easily forgotten. I found it interesting regarding the physics theory you were talking about. What I genuinely find shocking is how obtuse and arrogant people are to, not just speed but, driving attitude in general. The day these people realise is the day they seriously injure or kill someone, or when they receive a phone call at work or police officers turn up at their door telling them devastating news of a loved one. It's sad but it's the reality of it. I too find it frustrating but the law is law and it's there to protect people. If your unlucky enough to be caught speeding take the punishment like a man (or woman).

    I did a stint in taxi driving examination for Leeds council and the main place that people failed was at unmarked crossings, we seem to think that if there are no marking at a junction then it is our right of way. The trouble comes when someone comes along the other way and assumes that they have right of way and meet in the middle, it is too late then to reaches the crossing. I unfortunately lost my dad to one of these crossings and campaigned to have unmarked crossing done away with but they are still with us. I have always been a strong believer in having to take a re-test every 15 years as most drivers that I see make silly mistakes because it is so long since they had to drive safely. I agree with you though, that speed cameras are there to create money for government instead of making the roads safer.

      1. How long ago did you complete the course?
      2. How would you describe your overall experience with the driver retraining program?
      3. What specific skills or knowledge did you acquire or improve upon through the program?

    I am normally berated by my husband for driving UNDER the speed limit except on this one occasion I was within spitting distance of the 40 sign ( from a 30) and I got caught by a mobile van in a dip in the road doing 34 in a 30. Bloody typical I am in my 60s with only one transgression in the past, 30 plus years ago, again my husband will never let me forget! He says he does over the speed limit every time he is out on the motorbike but ‘is more aware of his surroundings’ than me

    I'm in the U.S. and haven't had an international drivers licenses in over 30 years. So if you get caught speeding, do you not get a ticket and have to pay a fine, or is it just points on your drivers licenses which cause your insurance rate to go up, or can you just opt for the course and just pay the course fee without a ticket fine? Just wondering how it works where you live. Also, it was in Wales that you got the ticket, was the course in England or did you have to stay around to take the course. Questions, questions, and more question. LOL. Glad that is over for you and that you have a good additude about it all. God Bless and take care.

    You would think that they could use the money they get from the tickets to PUT UP SIGNS. There's a few places in the states where the speed limit is implied and not posted. The sign that dictates the speed limit change is the sign that says now entering XYZ county. Because the implied speed limit for unmarked roads is a county ordinance.

    I've got no problems with speed cameras on known accident blackspots and in built up areas etc, but when they put cameras at the bottom of long steep hills - knowing that most cars today don't have a great deal of engine braking so even if you're driving sensibly when starting the descent (maybe in lower gear if really steep) you've still got to go hard on the brakes to avoid exceeding the 30 because money grabbing councils don't put in a descending speed limit zone because they know most drivers will be exceeding the 30mph and thus adding to the revenue earned from the camera. I've seen more rear end shunts caused by panic braking approaching cameras than any accidents as drivers enter a 30 and are naturally scrubbing off speed. Councils really need to rethink their warning signs and maybe increase the length of the descending speed limit zones so drivers are in with a chance to get under 30mph before the speed limit. Several major roads in Dorset and Devon where drivers are forced to brake extremely hard at the bottom of long steep hill because of a sodding camera and no countdown.

    • @rickvanman
      @rickvanman  Před 7 lety +1

      This doesn't count as a "conviction" as doing the course nullifies it. You only have to declare it if directly asked by an insurance firm, but there is a widely adopted "don't ask, don't tell" policy that the insurers use, and they generally do not ask about speed awareness courses.

    My flatmate got a bad letter throught the post today.
    He got done on a "cashcow" road - it should honestly be 40, due to great visibility and wideness and condition of the road (elsewhere in the country, this is a 40 all day long); but it's 30 .. and he did 42, JUST on the threshold. He got caught by a mobile camera.
    He was prepared to pay the £100 fine and take the 3 points - until I pointed out my other friend's experience, and that he could take the speed awareness course - which is even £10 cheaper than the fine, and you go away as if it never happened (cough! "Insurance premium"), but better educated!
    This video will be good reassurance for him - can you tell me how the process works?
    Do you get "summoned" to a specific date and time for the presentation?
    Or can you chose a presentation to attend within the 4 months?
    It's Cambridge - a speed trap nightmare zone which is surely well attended by the AA speed-awareness circuit. There's probably a presentation once every 4 hours, 24/7 here!

    The physics lesson about just creeping over the limit resulting in a much higher speed at impact is only true if someone stepped out infront of you at precisely the right distance away that you could only just stop in time at 30mph. I agree with the numbers 11mph and 18mph if you started at 32 and 35 respectively. If however someone stepped out into the road such that you could only just stop in time at 25mph, then the differential in speed at impact if you started at 30 or 32 is only 3mph. It's actually not exponential.

    • @jack28aug
      @jack28aug Před 8 lety

      +RichardB1983 Completely agree, if she was one foot close to Tiff needells car in the 1st test at 30mph she'd still get hit with 11mph of force. If Tiff didn't see her because he was trying to read road signs then she would be hit with 30mph of force, even though he's obeying the limit (though not driving with due care).

      mick walker This exact question was raised on the course, I can't remember precisely what the reply was but I think they suggested that the laws of physics still applied - as in, the impact speeds still increase exponentailly as the speed increaces. The video they showed demonstrated it quite effectively.

      Well i would bet a brand new BMW would have a shorter stopping distance from 60 to 0 than a morris minor. So less chance of impact over the same distance, there is no such thing as a standard stopping distance.

    • @rickvanman
      @rickvanman  Před 8 lety +2

      I think the point was that it doesn't matter, the physics curve applies to all cars. The faster the speed, the higher the impact speed. People still die in, and get hit by modern high spec cars as well as old cars.

    If the speed limit goes from National Speed limit to 40mph on a road there will be 40mph signs displayed, two of them one either side of the road. If the speed then reduces to 30mph on that road there should be 30mph signs displayed one of them either side of the road. If not the 30mph limit is not enforceable the fact that street lights are present does not constitute proper posting of a limit. If it is dark extra rules apply to help your case.Police often try to enforce a limit which is easily challenged and if you do and are correct they will send you a notice saying basically that you have committed the offence but on this occasion they have decide not to prosecute. The reason for this is that if you can prove signage was not consistent with the legal requirement and this is proven in court all other drivers who went to court and were convicted can seek a refund on their costs which include; legal representation, fines, increased insurance payments over the years you have been affected etc.

    Speeding through our village is a huge issue. We have tiny little roads not big enough for 2 cars to park and lined by cottages on both sides with not much of a path (and in places no path at all. It is a classic 17th century road being used by 21st century traffic. Cars come barrelling down at 40 and above when the speed limit is 20. Sooner or later something will happen. Maybe a car will get scuffed, maybe a pet will be killed, or just maybe a child will be killed. I am all in favour of any traffic calming measure and so these courses sound a great idea. I am not sure I would have much sympathy with someone who boasted that this was their 3rd course. If thats the case I wouldn't want them driving through here, and so points on the license and disqualification from driving is a better option. Just my opinion of course but hopefully you can see where I am coming from. Great video Rick, all the best.

      Great talk? Just watched the first two minutes and it was 'a sneaky one' North Wales police 'are notoriously bad for speed traps' and catching speeders is just a revenue generator.
      Really sounds like this twat has taken it to heart, learned from his mistakes and benefited from the course he was allowed to take instead of just being given a conviction.
      The police do not have to give the course option which actually does away with the fine imposed, so a bit stupid if they're just out to make money. Also, speeding fine money goes to the Government Consolidated fund like all fines and is then part of general government expenditure, not to the police force so there's zero incentive for the police as they don't get the revenue. So 'I think it's one of their biggest revenue generators' is utter crap from the brave boy. Doesn't seem he takes it seriously or has learned anything.

We all do every day to some extent but their greedy fingers now want to extract even more money from us and this attitude needs to be reversed because good honest people are getting sick of it.
    No offence just my opinion.
    Cheers
    Martin

      Totally agree Martin. In reality it felt like I had been mugged and I was really angry about it for a long time.

      I agree and I disagree, here's why. Yes your totally right when it comes to motorways or big open roads, however a fine or points or speed awareness course are justified if you get caught speeding in a 30 where there may be children like outside a school or something. I'm not saying I haven't ever done it myself but if you get caught doing it, it'd be fair enough.

    Great upload, the fine is one thing it's the points on your license these revenue collectors should stop because its a win win for the insurance companies yes we should check or speed but now we're watching our dash clocks watching out for speed cameras and that in itself causes accidents I bet the government think tank bodies didn't mention that!

    • @jonesynet
      @jonesynet Před 4 lety

      If you can't occasionally check your "dash clocks" and still concentrate on driving, you're a danger to all other road users and shouldn't be allowed on the road. How the fuck did you pass our test?

    But you can drive at 60 mph on a narrow winding country lane , madness and proves it's all about making money 🙄

    As a driver of a 450 hp 2015 Mustang, I am keenly aware of my speed. Its usually too fast. We have cameras here too, but they are not connected to the police. We pay a $50.00 fine and that goes to Parks, roads etc. Re speed traps, Welcome to America. We created them here just to send to you in England!

    Exactly a week after passing my test as a 17 year old boy i was caught speeding! The most boring 4 hours of my life! I was by far the youngest person there and the next youngest was about 25! Wouldn't mind but i was only a few miles over the speed limit in a 30!

      Did they let u out of the course on time or did they let u out late?

    i just had to sit one of these, my licience had more categories than both course runners and one of the class tables combined, i drive a hgv and have driven in afghan/iraq and several other countries also and i only took it to avoid the points which is great but i still have to say this all just bullshit money grabbing nonsense. They only ever catch slight speeders who are barely over and never make any impact on the really dangerous drivers at locations where it is needed instead they hide in well picked spots with several sly factors more likely to tip ppl over slightly

      Why would such an experienced driver not be able to obey mandatory traffic signage? You appear to have forgotten your legal obligations in favour of ego soothing.

      It's funny how with all your jaw-dropping, impressive driving experience, which clearly makes you a much better driver than those taking the course, and you still break the law. And get caught doing so! :)

      I’m doing the course to avoid points......
      but then I drive over the speed limit pretty much everywhere because when you are as experienced of a driver as I am you come to realise that it’s not speed that is the issue, it’s driver error.
      I too have a lot of licence catagories, in fact I have them all.......all this course will do is make me more aware not to get caught again......

  • @van-gabondramblinrose6398

    Hi Rick, recently subscribed and enjoy your attitude and video's. You say the course was "written by Government people"...I would hazard a guess that it was heavily influenced by the Government 'nudge' unit. check it out...mass reframing on an industrial scale, which they are now exporting around the world.

    I have only been caught speeding once in my life and it was because i was in a 30 leaving a roundabout following the flow of traffic out of the 30 into a national speed limit and on the boundary was the van , BUT i hold my hands up it was my own fault i should be responsible for my own car and not be a sheep the only awareness course i needed was that lesson never mind the other cars I'm in charge of this one , have a lovely day . oh and one more thing isn't it funny that when a person gets caught speeding its never their fault , mm really ?
