I always figured Dumbledore used the Elder wand to fix Hagrid's wand and told him to keep quiet about it. Dumbledore might have even tutored him a bit on some things as well. And Hagrid, being so loyal to Dumbledore, kept it quiet.
And, if you noticed it, the only time he's really allowed to use his wand-brella (before he becomes a professor) is when Dumbledore tells him to.

Dumbledore fixing Hagrid's wand makes a lot of sense. Every time we've seen Hagrid use magic, he hasn't really misfired like every other broken wand in the story. I wouldn't really call him not completely transfiguring Dudley counts as a misfire. Probably a small case of user error. It would've been a huge problem if he succeeded anyway. Wouldn't have been able to explain that one away.

Harry was still unqualified at that point, not having taken his OWLs yet. I think that's the common factor. If someone who isn't yet a full wizard does something bad enough, snapping their wand is on the table. If they're a fully qualified wizard, it's unthinkable.
Does it make sense? No, but neither do taboos about nudity or gender markers. They're social constructs. In the Victorian era, pink was considered a very masculine color, associated with baby boys, and it was blue that was associated with baby girls. A hundred years later, men would actively avoid anything pink for fear of being associated with weakness or being LGBTQ+.
In the wizarding world, taking away a wizard's wand is the harshest of punishments, and snapping it forever is unthinkable. Preventing a child from *becoming* a wizard apparently is not, even if they're almost there. It doesn't make sense to us, because it's not our society so we can see how weird it is.

I always thought that Hagrid's wand was destroy BECAUSE he was expelled as such a young age, and two years before he could take (and pass) his OWLS. If I'm not mistaken the OWLS are the tests that allow you to practice magic in the outside world, and been expelled in his third year meant he would never passed his OWLS. I think it would be like been barred from ever taking a driving test because you drove a car and killed people with it at age thirteen. There is a zero percent chance his wand was snapped, or at least remained snapped. Dumbledore had to have either saved it or repaired it with his Elder Wand. Even if the pieces were put into the umbrella, broken wands can’t do any magic in any controlled way. Wands that are fully snapped can’t do magic whatsoever, at least not more than a regular stick can. Hagrid performs perfectly competent, powerful, and controlled magic through his umbrella, so whatever is in the umbrella cannot possibly be the pieces of Hagrid’s wand. First, a new wand because he can't use his old one in public, and perhaps because the Second Wizarding War changed him as it did all others. I suggest a Chestnut wand with unicorn hair core, 18" long: for working with beasties, a sense of justice, and a strong bond with Hagrid. Length due to a growth in Hagrid's kindness and compassion. (was 16" before).
Second, acceptance back at Hogwarts for madrigal learning of his choice, carefully guided by headmistress Minerva McGonagall.
Third, Hagrid's entire legal and imprisonment records expunged.

Another reason for why he was so harshly treated is probably because he has such high potential for natural magic, he lights a fire using magic from his "umbrella"...but never says an incantation.

He got hagrid expelled and wand snapped (yes I know it tom was the instigator, but it was still BECAUSE of aragog), he tried to eat harry and ron, and then he (obviously not willingly bc yknow) allowed his children to rampage across the castle during the war. Ah, Hagrid's wand! A poignant example of the complexities in wizarding law and prejudice. It's tragic how his gentle giant nature clashed with the rigid rules of the Ministry. But isn't it fascinating how it reflects broader themes of discrimination and the struggle for acceptance in the magical world? Dumbledore's support for him despite this setback truly shows the power of loyalty and friendship.

The wand being snapped just seems to be part of the expulsion from Hogwarts, seeing how Harry's wand was facing the same fate in OotP. Newt's wand wasn't destroyed because he had already passed his OWLs, which is apparently seen as the threshold to allow some to stay within the wizarding community. Not allowing Hagrid to have his wand formally restored after he was cleared of all charges however might have been because of his heritage.

The whole "school where you live and get sorted into competing houses" is quite different to most peoples reality. I was blown away when I heard that this is actually how some British schools work. Also I think it is super interesting to see a magic society being in the process of getting left behind by ever evolving technological advancement. Like 400 years ago, they must have been so far ahead. Since then they even seem to have regressed, since all the cool stuff, like the mirror, the veil, the pensieve, the 3 deathly hallows, and even the 3 unforgivable curses are not even completely understood by modern wizards (it was proposed that all of that way invented by the same people). The Hogwarts hat is also unique, and the chamber of the secrets is hidden in a way that only people who were intended to find it found it. The only somewhat recent examples of impressive magic is the philosopher stone and the marauders map. The later might have be a repurposed page of ancient magical paper from a specific magical book.

I think one reason Hagrid's wand was snapped, or perhaps the excuse given, was his age. Hagrid was only in his third year, so he really wouldn't know how to use a wand properly, and could potentially do a lot of accidental damage. He was *not* a wizard, only a student, so there was an opportunity to prevent a(n allegedly) dangerous person from ever becoming a wizard. His alleged crime was severe enough to warrant (or be presented as warranting) not being allowed to proceed.
Newt was 16, already past his OWLs and therefore already a fully qualified wizard - remember, not all wizards stay on to take NEWT level classes, and those who leave after their fifth year are full wizards. It was too late to put the genie back in the bottle in his case, although they could take steps that would keep him out of the most prestigious and highest-ranking positions in society, by keeping him from any NEWTs.
In wizarding society, a wizard without a wand is helpless. Taking away their wand would be like stripping them naked and chopping their hands and feet off. It's just unthinkable for most. And given how little non-magical education most wizards get, expecting them to go live as a Muggle would be both unsuccessful and endanger the masquerade, the Statute of Secrecy.

I can totally believe some prejudice was involved in Hagrid's case, but also, Harry is threatened with having his wand destroyed after performing underage magic in the muggle world, which is way less intense than having a murder accusation over you, even if it was durting the tie Fudge tried to "cancel" Harry. I think maybe something about not being fully trained. For Newt, he would have already taken his OWL's, which appears to be sufficient to call yourself a trained Wizard. Some jobs only require OWL grades and Fred and George debate leaving without taking any NEWT's (which they eventually end up doing) and even if they did get the funding for the joke shop from Harry, you'd think they would have known if there would be any problems for example with getting permits and such, if they only had OWL's.

    @TheRealTricky Před měsícem

Now it's important to note that Harry's wand would almost suffer the same fate as Hagrid's after he used the Patronus Charm to protect his cousin Dudley from being kissed by a Dementor, for the crime of Underage Magic, a "crime" Harry did commit, but Dumbledore was successful in convincing the Wizengamot that Harry purely acted out of defensive reasons, saving someone from a horrible fate.
When I take the tons of letters Harry received until the Order Of The Phoenix brought him to their HQ, they seem very aware of this being a logical way to go and they urged Harry NOT to surrender his wand.
However it's very clear that if Harry and Dumbledore lost the case, Harry's wand would have been snapped or otherwise be destroyed. The movies may not fully cover that, but the novel does.
Now, I wonder since Newt appears to have escaped this fate, all three have in common that they were expelled or in Harry's case, almost expelled, but Harry's wand would have been snapped had the expulsion come through.
Now Harry is NOT a half giant, but Harry was of course a threat to Fudge's career and Fudge might have realized that if Harry kept his wand that Dumbledore would see to it that Harry knew how to use it properly, so likely "corruption" may be what Harry's and Hagrid's cases had in common. Not to mention that Harry's crime should have lead to clearance from the start as he only acted in defense (and fortunately Dumbledore managed to enforce that outcome), and in Hagrid's case he didn't even commit the crime at all, but nobody (except for Dumbledore) appeared to keep the thought in mind that the real culprit was actually trying to lay off the blame to someone else and someone who's an easy target due to prejudice (we know that Dumbledore had this idea, since Riddle already stated himself that Dumbledore kept an annoyingly close eye on him since that particular incident).

Is there a video on why Wizards fear muggles so much to hide from them? With how arrogant wizards seem to be, they seem to both be totally aware of, but also completely ignore, the vast advantage muggles have over them that could greatly improve their lives which kinda feels like a bit of a plot hole. Most WW2 era tech works in the wizarding world, so I wonder if that could be part of it. (Seems like only electronics malfunction near magic, fully mechanical devices don't like old cars, guns, ext...)
Although that also makes you wonder why dark wizards don't leverage that advantage, perhaps its their arrogance? Its a weird case.

10:26 Two-thirds into the video before we get to the center of the hedge maze: Hagrid got his want snapped because he was a half-giant, full-stop. The false accusation was just the excuse. Hagrid was treated as a person until he grew too tall to "pass" as a human, then the bigoted majority wanted to remove this 'non-person' from the ranks of the wizards.
Many of the 'Dark theories' seem to stem from the core Dark Secret of the Wizarding World: it's essentially a mirror of the old Colonial Era.
