- Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. In today's video we're discussing wand history, woods, cores, lengths and more. Why wands, you ask? Well- they’re one of the foundations of Harry Potter!
Let’s start with a history lesson.
Considered to be a ‘complex and mysterious branch of magic’- wand-making refers to a ‘wandmaker’ using wand cores and woods to construct wands for witches and wizards. The profession dates back many many centuries, and the earliest known wandmakers were said to have been druids. A druid was considered to be, in Celtic times, a member of the learned and priestly class. Druids considered anything with a ‘woody stem’ to be a tree, which led to them producing wands out of things like vine- a tradition followed by wandmaker Garrick Ollivander in the 20th century. Though druids were skilled at their craft, at this stage in history it was still totally normal for a customer of a wand shop to bring their own core with them, a tradition that has basically fallen off in more recent times.
The first Wandmaking shops were known to date back to the establishment of Ollivander’s Wand Shop in 382 B.C. The original ‘Ollivander’, the ancestor of Garrick Ollivander, was thought to have come from a Mediterranean country in Roman times and set up a stall in what would eventually become Diagon Alley. The etymology of the name Ollivander is said to literally mean “he who owns the olive wand”- which is a very FITTING name, and further points to him coming from a Mediterranean country where olive trees would grow natively.
The Ollivander family revolutionized wand making when they publicly forsook the traditional wand-making process, which previously had witches and wizards procure their own wand core. Ollivander believed that this process produced wands that were ‘inferior’ in quality and performance, which led to the family procuring all wand components for future customers.
Ollivander researched the best wand cores and would always find the best wand wood to complement it, and where the purchaser would previously select a wand of THEIR choosing, he began the tradition of having the wand choose the wizard.
Now, if you’re any sort of Harry Potter fan at all- then you’ll know that wands are tools that witches/wizards use to channel their magic. We’re introduced to Ollivander’s wand shop right near the beginning of the Philosopher’s Stone- when Harry is picking up his supplies for Hogwarts.

You forgot to mention Kneazle Whisker wand cores, I think they were classified as substandard like Kelpie Hair. But in the past before the 3 "supreme cores" it was common for wizards and witches to bring whiskers from their pet Kneazles as a core because it was thought their close bond to their pet would enhance their relationship with the wand.
Exactly what I did. The only thing I'm concerned about is whether my wand will prove to be as strong-willed and temperamental as the Kneazle who donated said whisker...

I used kneazle hair to make my herbology 3 trait for my gear. Had lead to me being the most deadly plant-slinger at Hogwarts.
I have a sawmill and do woodworking for a living. I've been thinking of making wands using a mix of natural, carved and turned methods. My daughter is now getting into Harry Potter so she will get the first.

In the world of Harry Potter I think it's obvious why there aren't really text books available to almost anyone on wandmaking and wand lore because wizards guard it so closely to themselves. But I agree I can't believe she hasn't really gone in and written a comprehensive wandlore and unusual magic "text book"
It's more of trade. Although that said it would be really neat to see a Wand Maker's trade book written. It would a great piece of fiction. Wand tradesmanship has really grown out of fashion hence why it's more of a tradition then a sought out profession....

Cypress wood, 11 ¾, quite bendy flexibility, phoenix core. Remus Lupin I think is the only Cypress wand holder.
I hope Hogwarts Legacy has all types of wands, the smallest detail in a game can have the biggest impact.

@@katakurifan5213 Phoenix feather cores were common. Harry and Voldemort had fawks tail feathers the only two that particular Phoenix. There were lots of other wands with feathers from different phoenix’s

There are some things you forgot to mention:
Jacob's sibling from Hogwarts Mystery game also had the possibility of owning a blackthorn, hornbeam, ebony, laurel or redwood wand depending on the players choice.
Cedric also had a wand made of ash.
Mary Cattermole had a cherry wand.
The old care of magical creatures professor Kettleburn had a chesnut and phoenix feather wand.
Leta Lestrange had a wand made of ebony.
Sir Cadogan had a troll whisker core for his wand.
You also forgot to mention Mahogany wand wood, that was notably used by James Potter, although nothing is known about this wand wood.
I'd argue that Snape had an ebony wood wand as well on the argument that he was matched with it while lily was still alive and viewed his wand as his last connection to her in the end. Especially since, in the movies (I'm aware books are law) his wand is VERY black so I almost can't see him with anything else. Also with his work as a spy he'd have to appear to be comfortable with the status quo weather he was or not
I think Hawthorn fits him way better. The description for hawthorn wood is super fitting for Snape. And in the movies half the wands are very dark, so i don't asssume wood just by movie looks.

Newt Scamander has sea shells in his core, although I think this was just part of the make up.
@@HHLucifer666 ebony isn't always black though. it can be a very orangey brown as well. the wood has variations of colour. for instance the wooden parts of the floor in the Ministry of Magic are Ebony. It's a beautiful wood, very expensive IRL though. Like 6 grand in the UK for a small, ebony coffee table.

I always enjoy your videos but this one is special to me. As a wandmaker myself i love all things wand-related.
Couse even tho they are not the source of magic, rather a catalist, they are a symbol- to us, fans, they are a source of true magic, thats why i love them so much. They help the story we already concider a huge part of our lifes even more real
Funny how Cedar wands are supposed to belong to people who can’t be fooled, but Horace Slughorn is probably known best for being fooled by Voldemort into telling him about horcruxes.
It's been a bit since I read the books. But I thought the whole thing was that he was entirely complicit in the exploration of the information. He may not have known the extent of what Tom Riddle planned, but he was aware of the information and how it may be used. Which is why he altered his memory and didn't want to return to Hogwarts and what not.

He wasn't fooled, and Voldemort had already created one by this point. He enables everyone in the slug club, but tried to rationalize to himself that this wasn't a mistake.
That was one time though, and from someone who was part of his inner circle. If you pay attention to the people Slughorn has taken interest in, they all became someone of great renown. If you're destined to be a "big name", so to say, Slughorn will know when he meets you. Besides, one failure of your bullshit meter doesn't mean your bullshit meter doesn't work.
@@propheinx2250 Not to mention, even in his real memory, he didn't instruct him, just gave him a vague idea of what it costed to perform, and he did seem a bit worried after telling him, I think he knew, on some level, that voldy wasn't as repelled by the spell as he should've been.
This honestly deserves so much more recognition than it's gotten. I absolutely love the effort and length to put into this video. The history, information, and depth to the subject is amazing and I need more videos like this
True. But it could have been even better if he took only one percent of the effort put into this video to maybe at least trying to pronounce the scientific names properly. I studied biology and listening to this video, the idea of having the Latin names is cool, because English is not my Native language (thus not knowing a lot of the tree's names) and so I should be easily able to understand which plant he is talking about. Sadly, in most cases it's absolutely impossible because he butchers the names so badly.
Not to "hate" on the video - it is a really cool idea, but... why putting the Latin names in it in the first place when you have no interest in them being understood? Only to seem smart? It's a shame because done right this would have been so great! I mean the whole idea of Latin names is that they could be understood internationally. This really buggers me.
A snakewood wand with a Basilisk core sounds so sick!
Funny i just found your comment, i actually have a snakewood wand with saharan horned snake horns being installed as "cores" (its the only thing that i could find that would be the equivalent to basilisk horns) being commissioned.

I always thought it would be cool if there was a fan fiction about sourcing the baselisk horn's post chamber of secrets in order to fashion an immensely powerful wand.

@Mason Devereux-Smith that would be the more logical option to try, however the venom could cause some issues potentially.
Also, a Basalisk (atleast the one we saw) does have 3 horn looking objects that lay sort of flat on the back of it's head. Olivander could try both a fang and 'horn' to see what works best or if either work at all... if they work he could make a lot of fang wand cores, the fang that got harry wasn't in the front, so it kind of implies every tooth Is actually a fang capable of injecting venom. Especially since snakes eat their prey whole, they dont need actual teeth. If that's the case, that's a whole lot of venom lmao. Could he make multiple wands out of one fang? I'm assuming so since they're so big, there would be a lot of "brothers" floating around with a 'connection' similar to how both Harry's and voldemorts Phoenix tail feather wand cores reacted to fighting one another.
Salazar Slytherin's wand was made from the horn of a basilisk. It was an incredibly powerful wand. Eventually it was buried and a tree was grown from it, that produced some of the most powerful healing ingredients.
When I was younger, I used to role-play with my friends. it was a weird, Harry Potter-Percy Jackson crossover world, so we invented a whole lot of new wand materials: Dementor shroud strand (or bone fiber, sometimes), a drop of a God's ichor (their golden, divine blood), Basilisk scale, Acromantula hair, Pegasus feather...
I thought of a fanfic character who would use around 2 or 3 wands. They'd have the same core, to the point of being "twins". That is coming from the exact same source, but the wands themselves would all be made from varying woods. They're all attuned to the witch/wizard, but are best used in different situations.
As Harry himself proves, children often produced wandless magic in times of stress. Good vid buddy, really enjoyed.

You are, of course, correct in your description of Native American and First Nations magic. As discussed in a previous video commentary, Native practitioners, usually graduates of the Canadian-American institute called Anweledig, use chanting, song, and dance to cast their spells. The intensely elegant, graceful body movement looks very similar to the martial arts of Tai-Chi (太極拳 depicted in movies such as 尚氣 “Shang-Qi,” 臥虎藏龍 “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” or 霹靂 “Pili Fantasty: War of Dragons”), suggesting a heretofore unexplored, supernatural connection between East and West.
This kind of Indigenous Wandless Magic (IWM) naturally has advantages and disadvantages. In a duel, practitioners are not reliant on wands and therefore cannot be disarmed; however, IWM Practitioners can be easily defeated with a well-placed Body-Binding or Silencio Charm. As such, IWM is most powerful and works best when performing complicated tasks such as Healing, Divination, Climatomancy, Ceremony, Love Medicine, and casting Protection Spells.
I think Kelpie hair is even better than other cores.

I think part of Olivander’s success is/was producing high quality, reliable wands. Almost standardising the process, imo.
Also, it’s fun to consider, dragon cores are also considered “unreliable”, right? and easily turned to dark magic.
Do we think that “unreliable” in this case refers to an inclination to dark magic or the likelihood of a magical misfire?
I recall coming along a wiki that explains that there "were" more wood and core types...but they were later deemed to dangerous or unstable to be used. But a few of these "Forbidden" wands are still around.
One of which is a wand made of Petrified Wood with a Kraken tentacle core and a Philosopher's stone made into it's helt.

Good point at the end. We learn from Hogwarts Legacy that Natty Unai did not use a wand at Uagadou school, nor did the other witches and wizards there. She only first used a wand when she transferred to Hogwarts.
We've learnt that way before when a maps of the wizarding & witchcraft school was released

It's interesting that Harry Potter lore is almost designed to make fan fiction. If you were making a character for the HP world you could start by designing a wand, selecting a patronus (even if they can't actually summon it), selecting an animagus form (again, even if they aren't an animagus), and selecting a house. Once you've done that, you have a blueprint for who the character is.

This was an absolutely fascinating video, thank you. I love how wand law is based heavily on Celtic tree law. It is very fascinating when you look at the Celtic ogham and read up about the folklore of the individual trees, it is really interesting how much crossover there is between that and what you learn in Harry Potter. I love it.

Rowan wood with a dragon core 11 ¾" and slightly springy flexibility. I always was a more defensive/supportive type in life but also tended to pick characters in games that fulfill such a role so I can see that fitting.

Can you do a video on what would happen if Remus had taken his potion the night of the Shrieking Shack incident? How would Fudge have reacted? How would Fudge have handled it? Would Peter have been able to escape (either due to the Ministry’s incompetence or Fudge trying to cover up a major mishap that could spell disaster for the Ministry) and still bring back Voldemort? If not, how would that change the timeline and the Second Wizarding War? If Peter hadn’t escaped, how would that impact the Trio in Malfoy Manor?
I love the way you build up and portrayed this documentary; clear introduction, followed by examples of materials made and the known characters who used them. There's so much to say and no wonder this video was almost 50 minutes long, though it felt much shorter.

I saw a fan site that boasted other wand cores, one of my favorites was cherub feather. The idea is one of my favorites, I loved this video and I wished we could have gotten more from wand lore, but I do love the the expanse of it all. This is one of my all time personal favorites from you thank you.
My wand is Ash and Unicorn Hair, and at first I was upset because two other characters (Cedric Diggory and Charlie Weasley) both had the same type. But after during a little research into Ash Wood/Tree lore I realized it was the perfect wood for me. I would suggest any one that was unhappy with their Pottermore/Wizarding World wand spend some time with it and do a little research :)
Same, I ended up with a rather long 14.5 dogwood, with unicorn hair wand that is quite flexible. Which doesn't outwardly match me, though, due to the lore on dogwood. I am actually quite suited for dogwood. All of which tend to lean towards my more selfless nature and happy-go-lucky demeanor over the standard description. More suitable for flashy defensive magic and uplifting enchantments, with a loyal core that will never falter under my good hearted personality.
Mine is Beechwood with a dragon heartstring core 12. 5 inches and unbending flexibility. Dragon heartstring was always my favorite of those 3 wand cores and the unbending flexibility makes it also that it won't switch owners. Making it great for dueling :)

Always wondered if there were some wizards who used a staff instead of a wand. Or even a rod, the difference between a rod and a wand being that rods are generally bigger and not exclusively made from wood. I also wonder if wands, or magical focus implements in general really have to be made from wood exclusively. You'd think that something like dragon bone would make a powerful implement, especially when paired with a dragon heart core.
that's quite an intriguing idea.
My impression was that Merlin had a staff, not a wand, but I could be wrong.

I imagine not everyon has encyclopedic knowledge of wand lore
when he's knocked out on hagrids bike aswell, the wand defends harry from an attack from Voldermort. at least in the movies, I am not sure if this scene is the same in the books.
Wands are like any other tool. You can perform without them, but the task is so much easier with the right tool.

I just adore this type of videos. I badly needed this decade and some ago when I was doing message board based role play games. I always took deep research for my characters and what woods went best with which cores or tried entirely rare combinations when I couldn’t find exact details on the web.
This video made my head full of so many characters I no longer can really create. Such a greatness of nostalgia and historical knowledge. Makes me still wish for this entire universe to be my actual current one

There’s a lot of wand woods that have “no known canon owners.” I find this surprising, considering how many wizards there must be in all of Harry Potter, and in the story’s history. 27:01 and 27:46 for example.
It's almost like it was made for fan fiction.
That's a fun video idea though. Assigning wizards whose wands are unknown to these woods.
Actually wizarding world is a very small community and saw drastical decline during the three wizarding wars and many fleeing to less volatiles places, places with it's own wand makers.
I was a bit bemused by pottermore giving me a pine wand, but after your video it makes sense.
You could say carriers of this type of wand is always _pining_ for something

I am surprised that none of the wizards carried a staff. Most fantasy lore associates a wizard with a staff
Moody did in the movie 🎥 but I don't know if that counts. Luscious Malfoy also kept his wand in a cane again only in the movie and detached it when he went to use it. I agree though staves should be used in HP . For heavy and potent spellwork. But slower to wield. Also some wizards should specialise in two wands. Rarer because of the clashing nature of wands. Brother wands I'd imagine would arguably be either suited or Ill suited depending on the source .
I think bristlecone pine wood would make an excellent wand, since it is known for endurance in harsh conditions, longevity, and seems almost magical.
Probably a stubborn and independent wand.

I always thought my wand was sort of interesting. Ebony wood, 11 inches, Phoenix core. But of course, that was the result of the quiz I took on Pottermore ages ago.
And I had thought before about what profession I would really enjoy as a witch in the world of Harry Potter, and I’d always thought wand-making would be what I’d like the best. This was a super cool video, thank you.

When I did the test I got a 14 1/2" Pine wand with Phoenix core and supple flexibility.
Mine is Cedar, phoenix core, 12 1/4, surprisingly swishy flexibility ☺️
I'd want to try something hybrid.
Take a hair from the mane of a Sphinx and a hair from a Thestral and then braid them through a Phoenix tail feather or a ThunderBird tail feather. Maybe try Bamboo.

Based on the data you present here, my wand would likely be of pine wood with a phoenix core. It will probably be a long and quite flexible wand.

me too! i love Ilvermorny! and since wands are given at school here, i wonder about ollivanders view. if allegiance of a wand can b earned with use or as ollivander says if won in a duel. i think more will come out in America. Im hoping so, maybe we will have to write a fan fiction on the subject.

I always felt that werewolf hair could be used as a core especially for those who are werewolves using their own hair would probably create an unparalleled connection between wand and wizard
a werewolf isn't a magical animal. it's a cursed human.

I mean it's possible for unusual magical cores. The elder wand had a Thestral Tail Hair core, which is tricky to master, and only those who accept death can truly be the master of such a core.

Nice! I just took the test yesterday and got a wand of Ebony with a dragon heartstring core, 14.25" and unyielding.
Mine is dogwood with a veela hair core, 13.2" and springy flexibility.

I would be interested to try a Whomping Willow wand (or American equivalent; likely the Strangle Willow of Southern ghost stories) with no core just the magic wood; that would be really cool to me.
Its Chestnut or Hawthorn otherwise with Rougarou, Thestral, or Dittany as the core.

According to Pottermore, the wand that I am suited for is a 13 3/4" Ash wand w/ dragon heartstring core but I do not remember the flexibility. I'd be curious to hear your opinion about the wand & core type.
I doubt it'd be very flexible. Ash is a type of hardwood, and I believe a particular hard variant at that.

Severus Snape's wand chose him in his first year before he went to Hogwarts. Crafted from ebony from the Connemara mountains and a hardly-ever seen triple core: a phoenix tailfeather and the heartstrings of a Romanian ridgeback and a kelpie, it was an extremely powerful combination, temperamental with any other wizard who might have tried it, even Tom Riddle himself.
His wand was found under a stack of wands in a dusty white box with Ogham runes on the top.
