    Great video ! I actually really appreciate the " point blank " simple way of explaining that you do therefore i honestly have learned something . Thanks man.

    Hey Boedy… thanks for the info…
    Building PP295 that was found on the roadside. Decided to do a mild port job on it for the practice. Your measurements are good confirmation of my initial numbers… cool…

    Tim Baier did my muffler mod for my new Echo Timberwolf when I bought it. Did a excellent job, very professional person to do business with and highly suggest.

    For a clamshell saw, that already needs a thorough cleaning anyway, your vise method seems like a great way to set your numbers quickly👍🏻

    I %100 agree with you on not opening the intake up too wide and not adding too much extra volume to the transfers. I have found that keeping velocity up is important in those cylinders, and I love the little dips on the transfers, they make sense to me. That's going to run like a burning witch!!!

    • @lassila3
      @lassila3 Před rokem

      Velocity is damn underrated.

    I love that you're simplifying your approach and showing the how and why for others. The basic concepts of porting are just that- the basics. Are there some tricks that get you additional power? Sure. But I think Joe said it best that 80% of the gains come with the first 20% of the work. It's a lot of extra effort to get the rest. Good, standard stuff is the best place to start.

    • @novicelumberjack
      @novicelumberjack  Před rokem

      Yeah, a basic port job is pretty easy. It's trying to get that extra 20% of power that really becomes tedious.

  • @kraftzion
    @kraftzion Před rokem +2

    Somebody I watched said that when the intake closes and before the transfers open that you are compressing the charge in the crankcase so the transfers are at a higher pressure when they do open. That would be the difference between a high wide intake and a low narrow one. He had a name for it that escapes me but he seemed to think highly of high and wide:)

    • @novicelumberjack
      @novicelumberjack  Před rokem

      Yeah, I get that. But it's a balance. If you bring in too much fuel and air, it spits back. Plain and simple. You can do this by widening the intake too far also. It's always a balance.

    3.5hp with a .325 narrow kerf bar and chain would cut like a champ.
    A stock 501p/4910 has about 3.5hp. In use (also a light saw) it feels nice. Plus the poulan, like the echos, has a broad usable power curve. Not screaming demons but certainly great work saws.
    I kinda miss my 4620. I had a neighborhood young guy help me run a mile or two of fence. He kept talking about how much he liked that muffler modded poulan. So when we got done I sent it home with him.

      @@novicelumberjack right on brother… and that’s why I’m the way I am and think like I think…I got really interested in porting saw’s after my tree crush accident thinking that if I was fixing the equipment I would still kinda be around the guy’s and still apart of that tree cutting/removal type game and thank God my idea of just start a little landscaping and tree business and do all the physical work you can do to rehab your body has been a blessing and I got most of my ability back… but I made a couple porting videos…it was the third or fourth 391 Stihl that I had fixed and help to not be a total dog and I was trying to share and help other guy’s and I have nerve damage so I’ve got shakey hands on days that nerve in my neck is getting pinched and a guy said geshs-o-man just go get a drink already… like I’m some alcoholic and I just stopped making videos because of those nasty type comments but working past my limitations like using my little magnetic extension pins and whatnot is a fantastic thing and I’m going to start making some videos again to show other guy’s who can’t always hold onto a screw that you just need to continue to adapt and overcome! This down and dirty technique on the clamshell engine and really any other saw engine of setting it up and marking your exhaust and intake port heights before you completely disassemble them is fantastic… you aren’t running the engine with metal shavings your simply making it a very fast process… you pop them apart and grind them…clean them out and slap them back together! It’s not a lunar landing module…it’s a freakin chainsaw engine! You came from the motorcycle world too so your thinking is kinda similar with mine…and those other guys who don’t have a 20 year history with saw’s have other life’s experience that can be a huge bonus because they have their own unique twist on problem solving skills and finding those little shortcuts and different technique’s that definitely can make the entire saw building community better! I’ve got a couple of saw’s that I’m going to be trying out this technique on and seeing just how much faster and work saver’s it is… and I know it will be… it removes the need to reassemble your engine…at least twice for me… from what I’m thinking… I still use the large Cotter pin hammered flat for my $1 dollar mandrel and a green scotch brite pad and the WD40 on the exhaust port to glass shine them because they won’t carbon up down the road… and it’s 5 more minutes to look sexy… I’ve got 5 minutes… 😂👍

    105/125-80, Home made pop-up piston( not perfect tig work) on The husky 142, exhaust mod and the thing cuts just right. Used your transfer "notch" on the wemar, and on the 142 and I think its a cool trick... Clamshells have their place, especially when they're free or damn near it.

    • @novicelumberjack

      You got that right! This one was given to me because it was found sitting out for the garbage man to pick up.

  • @DaveyBlue32
    @DaveyBlue32 Před rokem

    Your going to take it apart to clean it out anyway… so your going to clean that crap out obviously!!! Geaso-man… nobody would be dumb enough to not disassemble that engine and clean out the crap… he just sped up the process and now has his marks… it’s a fast way to find your numbers!!! I love it… it’s down and dirty… easy is good! I like your theory about those transfers!!! You don’t want to kill the volocity… I use oil and tape and measure the volume like I’m making a vehicle head intake and exhaust ports even… LMFFAO that’s what I did in my first ones… I would measure the volume of everything and then I know what each stroke equals… I like where your thinking has gone….. ! Your fast blast of new fuel start’s pushing your spent fuel out your exhaust!

    • @novicelumberjack
      @novicelumberjack  Před rokem +2

      I actually did for this build. I recorded it and mentioned you, but the bore is so small on this saw, I was afraid that I was gonna pop the ring, so I chicken'd out! On the bigger bores, it will come in handy, especially when there are two rings.

    I also have a 46cc ryobi, anyone know who's design it what was modeled after? , or if they are worth taking interest in ?

    • @novicelumberjack
      @novicelumberjack  Před rokem +1

      Don't know much about the Ryobi saws. But my guess would be that they are terrible.

    • @DaveyBlue32
      @DaveyBlue32 Před rokem

      I have a 4818 Ryobi with two 1/4” holes through the muffler face as a truck saw…that dang things like a timex watch…take’s a lickin and keeps on rippin’… Ryobi is just like the Poulan design or very similar… they are all a hodgepodge of the husky/Poulan years of Electrolux design… they are all very similar to the 36/42 136/242/142 type Husqvarna/Poulan 2050 type saw’s… they work… the newer $100 dollar Poulan’s that people all talk crap about have super inexpensive fuel lines so they can decay so you’ll be buying another one in a few years… after fixing more than a dozen of them I’ve not needed more than a piece of echo or Tygon fuel line and a primer bulb… maybe a carburetor kit… they cut wood for less than $5 bucks worth of parts… I fix them to give away instead of loaning out my saw’s anymore as people kill good saw’s…give them a little beater to practice with… 👍😁. A new homeowner is happy to get one free… 😂😂👍

      @wnessnol Před rokem

      I know the 37cc Ryobi saws from a few years ago 3714 i believe were a decent quality Zenoah/Redmax clones. I still have one lightly worked over to 105/125/75 that i use all the time. Very strong and lightweight. IIRC the semi recent 46cc were Homelite

      @@novicelumberjack Wuz🆙BigGuy, I picked up one of these at a scrap yard the other day. It's a Poulan 2775, decent shape needs a bath and some love. From what I've gathered, the type 1,2 cylinders are the chrome bore, 3,4 bare bore. Seems more craftsman had the 3&4. Some have a number separated by a - before or after model/serial# indicating cylinder type 1,2,3 or 4, mine has a 1. Do you know what mm the piston is?👍🆙BigGuy

    Aiming for 104 and accidentally hitting a 102 is my game plan and I’ll sometimes shape it harder with my paper on my roof… tape your shopvac on your intake side if your grinding with your engine together… your grinding a death metal fine inside your engine… need to flush that crap out of that engine or she’ll die quickly????
