Engineers have certain parameters they have to meet in order to control sounds, vibration, smog etc. Modding just removes those restrictions, if the engineers could make it however they want, they would have 0 restrictions on them as well.
That thing is a beast! I didn't realize that thing was stock. It certainly sounds healthy with the modded exhaust. I used to get the engineers did it best from the factory thing back in my scooter tuning days. These 2 stroke machines are designed to meet the EPA regs of thier day and just work... We know that our mods work, the proof is in the results. The factory can only do so much for the price we pay for them. I'm impressed with that saw in it's current state, I can't wait to see you port it, I think it will be very powerful. I really believe that porting makes these saws way more useful. I would run a 20" bar on that thing all day long after it was ported. It will have no trouble
I like this series of saw too. I have the 40,46, and 49cc versions. They are aren’t overly heavy and are fairly easy to work on. They definitely need an appropriate size bar and chain for sure. Check your carb Venturi size. These came with a couple different sizes over the years. You probably want the 13.49mm for when you port it.
Great video! You and the engineers have 2 different objectives. There’s are EPA requirements and ours is MORE POWER!! I have one of these saw and I’m looking to do the same.
You are on point a team of engineering wizards sometimes has various impairments regulations from the government and that is what that stock muffler reflects.Alsois shown in the auto industry.Keep up the good work.
These 4620 poulans impress me every time I see them run. They seem to truly have 50cc class torque and still rev well. I'd like to see you get your hands on a 5020 that replaced it. Be a cool side by side comparison. Old vs new in the new generations of poulan where they don't make true pro-construction saws.
I have 6 Stihls ms 250 to a 661. I also run my Poulan pro 4620 with 20” bar and full comp chain in oak and ash. But I never, ever run a dull chain. When I get real tired at the end of the day, I put down my Stihls and pickup the little light Poulans to finish my firewood load.
Engineers have to work within a budget, EPA regs, mass production ease, durability so the saws don't grenade before the warranty expires and time concerns regarding development. They could make saws that are as good as the master porters turn out, but any one of the reasons I mentioned might not make it possible to sell or make on a mass scale.
Your tuning ability has probably gotten better in the last 6 months which helps you get the most out of the muffler mod. I love my Poulan 2900 which is basically the same saw, muffler mods bring them alive.
I've owned and muffler modded 2 of these saws. Somebody stole 1 so I am down to 1. I can definitely say the muffler mod makes a difference. The 20" bar on the unmodded saw was laughable. With the mod it pulls a 20" no problem. The one I still have I've owned for 15? Years now, starts right up, runs great. Obviously had to replace fuel lines, general maintenence. Neither one would put out enough bar oil to suite me. Swapped to 30w problem solved. 1 had the tooless chain adjuster, it was junk. Contacted the company they sent me the old style cover free of charge.
I made my own exhaust instead of modifying the stock one and it runs way better now not just sound but the power feels better it doesnt seem to drop down as much when your steadily cutting but I also did an airbox mod because you can do what you want to the exhaust but if it's not getting more air in then it's not gonna push out anymore air. But then it needs tuned and the spark plug needs gapped to 35 or 40
Great testing my friend. R&D is what keeps us rolling, build and test and build better. 👍 YES we can make it better than engineers because we don’t have comply with all the epa regulation who hah. They did all the hard work designing it wishing they could go wild and that’s where we slip in and take over.
Poulans have their place in this world but to say a Poulan pro is better than a stihl ms170/180 idk I currently own both that's debatable have you ran a modded 180?

I use flat black VHT on my mufflers, so far it’s held up surprisingly well.

Nice gain. I might have to dig out the little pp260 and do some tinkering.

Yes sir! We don't have any of their boundaries!
In the wood, you could sure here the difference in the RPM that made the modded saw cut faster thanks to that muffler mod.

Excellent point. I'm definitely much better than I was at that time. Tuning in the wood really helps.
I put a Husky 136, clutch on mine, .325 pitch, running a 15” bar. Good little saw considering I paid $20 CAD for it.
The engineers weren’t trying to get performance they were trying to make EPA requisite emission tyranny numbers.
I agree 100% the Stihl Ms 170 isn't the best saw but it certainly is very good for it's purpose
Make it red, and guess what. It's a Jonsered. I used to like to mix the plastic up on them. My boss HATED it.
An engine is just an air pump. The faster you can get air/fuel in, burn it and get the exhaust out, the more power you make.
I have the Crapsman version of this saw, decently little runner for what it is..bit heavy
The ol' 46 is sta'n alive....sta'n alive!
I love that little saw.
I would like you to make a video of the Husqvarna 41 because the truth is one of the best that the line of chainsaws has released..

I have a question the clutch cover assembly should I get after market or buy oem cause of different fitment type

You got that right!
have cut cupel 15 inch trees so far with my new pro 4218 with a 8ten 24 inch bar no problems
Poulans have their place in this world but to say a Poulan pro is better than a stihl ms170/180 idk I currently own both that's debatable have you ran a modded 180?
what happened to the red paint on the muffler?
Burnt off after a few uses.
You ARE a singer. A bad one. Don't be hurt, I'm a bad singer too. I like to tell people I like to sing bad, it's the only way I know how.
No 20 inch bar
No beach volleyball. Make sense? No? Neither does your statement man. Gotta give me some context as to what you are talking about.
You would kill that pullin if you cut some season locust!
It has cut plenty of red oak. I'm sure it would be fine I locust. No the chain...that might suffer.
Do you feel? Like we do🎵🔈🎸
I wanna thank you...

These old partner, pouland and mac saws are so damn ugly i cant stand to see them
I really like them. And clearly...they can perform very well in the right hands:
