As a father, I admire Darius' father when says he wants to take care of himself so he can take care of Darius as long as possible. That is real love.

YES!! THIS!!! I am focusing on my health this year because my Autisitc son is EXTREMELY active and as his mom, I know he will always have speed over me [as he likes to elope...not as much] so I need to be fit [not for IG but for him]. I loved his hmming; my son loves music, humming and singing etc.
We don't want to leave them behind. Who will love them like we do. His father is a wonderful example.

I can relate, i am 44 and my son is 5, non verbal and the sweetest personality. He will likely need a lot of support his whole life and it terrifies me to think about who will take care of him when I and his mother are gone.
As a musician and teacher I am so interested in the way Darius stims with his voice and the harmonica. He is in fact making the same and similar sounds with both. I have a theory about what he's doing musically - the distance between the two tones he uses is about a half step, mimicking the sound of a leading tone to tonic resolution. Basically, it's the very pleasing sound of a musical phrase strongly ending. If that's the case I'm sure he also is hearing it as a I-V-I (tonic-dominant-tonic) resolution on the harmonica because it plays the other notes that fill out the chords. He has good ears! I would love to give him voice lessons - I think he would enjoy it and it would be good for him too. Music is truly a universal way of communicating.

He's definitely got a great musicality. As soon as he hears Chris humming his note he just picks it up immediately... And that slow vibrato he does. The first thing I thought when I heard him hum a just a few times was that he can sing... That he definitely was blessed with a voice.
I nanny a 6yo who is soooo similar to Darius and sometimes hums as a form of stimming. Hers is such a groan and not nearly as melodic compared to his. Hers really comes on most often when she is irritated. I wonder, as someone with a child dev/psychology/education background and also musical w/ an incredibly gifted musician for a husband... I'd be willing to bet that if there was a way to really figure it out, that his humming is a happy, positive, excited stim because of his natural ability.. Like when he hums he can hear how he connects to someone or into the world like a puzzle peice and it makes sense to him. Even if he doesn't "understand" persay... Sounds that are pleasing make people happy. When she is upset she grinds her teeth in the absolute harshest, squeakiest way ever. Is that grating sound a reflection of the anxiety.
Sorry this became a response that is more just me thinking out loud than anything else.

@@creamfiend84I feel he is stimulating his vagus nerve to calm his nervous system.
I intuitively started doing the mmmmm part of OM when I had a migraine(I get cluster migraines) I then came across information re stimulating the vagus nerve for pain relief. I do this all the time when I get a migraine now or experience pain (it works during fevers as well)
There is much information about heavy metals linked to autism, heavy metals cause inflammation and stimulating the vagus nerve reduces inflammation. I have found detoxing with zeolite to be very helpful and has reduced my systemic inflammation, chemical and light sensitivity. My cousins 3 yo who could only speak one word sentences, with his own rolling sounds language wrapped around single words. Within 2 weeks of using TRS (which is based on zeolite) he was speaking full sentences. She got onto TRS through a friend that had a similar experience with her child.
So many people have had massive improvements using TRS or zeolite to detox from heavy metals.

I saw a documentary on a severely autistic man like Darius one time. It says that God says “where others see a flaw, I see eternal innocence.” That’s what I see with Darius. He seems so happy. Lots of laughs and smiles and physical affection. He’s also so lucky to have the right kind of parents who are patient and have a great attitude ❤️

I love this interview. I think this is a great example of how autism doesn’t necessarily upset the person on the spectrum, it’s the world around us not understanding or making a place for us. Darius seems healthy and happy. Other people may have a problem with it, but Darius is enjoying himself. I’m glad he has a family that loves him and doesn’t try to force him to be someone he isn’t.

Hi I am autistic and so is my wife. We sometimes co-stim with each other just like Chris and Darius are doing (for us it looks like making ‘nnnn’ or ‘meep’ noises together, rocking together, or making repetitive hand movements) and it’s one of the most soothing thing when the other one joins in. I love it when someone joins in one of my stims as long as it is done genuinely and respectfully and not mockingly. Chris did that just right.

It sounds like Darius is meditating. I'm Autistic and I don't think I stim so maybe I'm wrong but I feel like Darius is on a different plane, so to speak, when he's doing that stim. Does stimming feel meditative? Do you realize what you're doing when you stim? Is it self-soothing?
I cannot help but recognize how musical Darius is. From the pitch perfect hum and rhythm he has when he is stimming and the rhythm and technique he uses to play the harmonica.. this guy is musically talented ! I love Darius and he brings me so much joy

darius is so similar to my younger brother (who's 16 atm) its almost eerie, his mannerisms, his laugh, the way he speaks, the way he contorts his fingers, even his obsession with rice lol, it really felt like i was watching another version of my brother, and seeing chris connect with him by joining in on the stimming was so heartwarming, it inspires me to be a better brother, having an autistic sibling can be difficult but one thing i've always appreciated about my brother is that he hasn't been corrupted by the world and seeing him just enjoy the wonders of life can be so therapeutic, and darius strikes me the same way, he's just being his own unique self and bringing light to the world in his own way, wishing him and his beautiful family all the best

Please, ANYONE with a child with Autism, make sure you have a Will done ASAP with at least a primary and secondary person who you trust will provide care for your child in case something happens which includes detailed instructions on money usage, medical care and your wishes. PLEASE also make sure they ALL have a copy or video of the Will. More than one person so it can not be disputed. You are not invincible and will not live forever. Make arrangements! There are too many who end up in mental homes, foster homes, homeless or with the wrong family member.
I love Darius's dad. He's not over the top or crazily positive about everything. He's realistic. That's something you don't see often, he's awesome.

I don't know why it impressed me so much. I guess I have just seen so much bad communication or lack of communication that it is surprising now to see anyone do it right.

We are here to usher in a more empathetic and understanding planet. We are highly intelligent and intuitive people and we have so much to teach others 🌈💜
My 18 year old daughter was diagnosed with Autism this past summer,she also has a learning disability,she is very bright and will be attending college in the fall as she wants to be a history teacher,she can tell you everything about History and is also a science nerd,she holds a job and lives life to the best of her ability😊

We all need certain kinds of stimulation to help us regulate ourselves in the world and establish appropriate social behavior. Whatever that is? I loved when his mom said Darius likes to grab and get more. I love you, Darius, and your family. I, too, want to grab and get more. I love you and your family and the heart you share.
His dads comment about trying to "stick around" really hits home for me.being a mom of a 32 yr old with cerebral palsy and a spinal chord injury as well....I want to be there for her as long as I can because the future terrifies me.

Love to you and your daughter. My only advice to you is to plan now. Talk to adult service providers and find out what skills she will need to have for the most decent programs, and get on it. This is not your fault or doing. It's not your daughter's fault or doing. You can't die or be unwell until you take care of her future. Plan now. Her transitions must be seamless. They will be horrific enough without her mom and best friend. Kove you.

The way she looks at him, with so much love. Is heartwarming
I was non-verbal as a child. When I stimm, I listen to the rhythms of my body and 'tune' them to be like nature. If it is a tapping, I tap to my heartbeat or the waves of an ocean. If It is rocking, I rock like a tree branch. Supermarkets and pointy things hurt my head and ears and eyes, so I tap with two fingers on my wrist, to send a calmness from there, up my arm. I often think that autism must be a little similar to what neurotypicals feel on acid. Some people pretend to be autistic for attention, but I can always spot people who have the rhythm of our language. I can talk to non-verbal autistic people still, even though I was told I was too good at socialising to be autistic when I sought diagnosis (I came from a cult, so my non-verbal history was chalked up to abuse and stimming to trauma behaviour)
As an autistic person who does acid, its not similar at all lol. You feel a little tingly all over, thoughts are mostly coherent but forming sentences is hard (which I guess is the only parallel but it doesn't feel the same), and you see different colours overlayed on everything, as well as the outlines of objects and things like text and images moving. Sometimes people's imagination runs away with them which is when you get intense trips where they invent worlds and scenarios, but I've never had that, maybe bc of my autism as I don't have much imagination at all
In fact I've done quite a few drugs and all of them tend to make my traits easier to deal with. Sometimes the traits are actually slightly lessened, but like 95% of the time it's a lot more like it's easier for me to cope with stuff than the thing not being difficult to begin with
Anyway so yeah it doesn't exacerbate my traits and I've never heard of someone tripping and finding things too loud or being unable to be social (in fact, if I'm with a few specific friends, acid tends to make me ramble on about like anything and everything, makes me super chatty but all my speech is slurred haha. And it's not like I'm thinking about the words at that point they just kinda happen). It's when I'm with anyone else that I end up just talking to them in my head cos the thoughts are there but the words just can't come out properly, if I try in that scenario I just end up making incoherent sounds
That father really is a smart cookie! That concern for longevity and the destiny of his son after his passing is a huge responsibility and very incredibly important to plan for. You go dad.
I had a son who was greatly disabled ...it wasn't autism. But any parent who has a child who will always need assistance in life, worries about who will take care of them if & when they're not here. Just a fact.

Not to mention that it's a heavily compassionate thing to do. I find caring for oneself is a huge effort, and to do such a thing for someone else requires great compassion. :)
@@leslieh761 i knew a few personally who took things day by day. In a bad scanario I don’t know what would happen plus they didn’t save any money.
Also, It’s surprising how few sbsk videos even mention post parental care plans.

One of my twin daughters has autism, Emily is 25 years old and has severe autism like Darious and displays very similar behaviours. I totally agree with his parents,they are a blessing and they literally make you stop and smell the flowers,I also share the same concerns wishing I could live forever to look after Emily. God bless this family and I am very happy meeting them.

Stimming, as defined by Wikipedia is: "Self-stimulatory behavior, also known as "stimming" and self-stimulation, is the repetition of physical movements, sounds, words, moving objects, or other repetitive behaviors. Such behaviors (also scientifically known as 'stereotypies') are found to some degree in all people, especially those with developmental disabilities, and are also frequent in people on the autism spectrum." I would love to hear some thoughts on stimming from people who do it often! Edit: I wanted to add that in my opinion stimming with Darius is a way for me to communicate, "I care about you enough to learn about something that is important to you." It's as if someone that I am friends with wanted to learn about volleyball or Bob Dylan, two things I enjoy. Although it may look a bit different, the emotions behind it are the same.
I don't have autism but I do have ADHD and have taken up stimming as a way to manage my day to day anxiety and stress. It's helped immensely. As a child I masked my symptoms too much to allow myself to stim, but making autistic friends and learning more about the autism spectrum has helped me in big ways to manage my own disability.

I don’t stim much but when I do it feels like a build up of energy and I feel kinda breathless until I like make a noise or shake it out - it’s really strange lol
I never knew what it was before but have found it helpful in relieving asthma attacks.
Never quite considered it a stim but I am a habitual nail picker ... and sometimes a finger-twiddler where I'd think of a phrase and tap it out from thumb to pinky until it ended on the pinky ...' yeah that's pretty specific and odd, LOL, and something similar with my shoulders I quickly got out of the habbit because it was too noticeable. Not autistic, not ADHD (that I know of), but it's funny what little body movements and things people might do
That humming must be so comforting. Try it yourself, you can see how it feels like you're vibrating from the inside. Close your eyes when you do it too, it feels really nice.
My 3 year old is getting a further diagnosis in October. This really touches my heart. Their bond is so beautiful

As the mother of a non-verbal, young adult autistic son, this warmed my heart. Also, rice is a daily meal in our house! 😂😂 I also stim with my son daily, and he gives me the BIGGEST hugs afterward. We call it our meditation time. ❤️❤️

I'm sorry for your loss. This comment hit me differently. At times, it can feel like a burden. But the truth is we couldn't be without the ones we love, and caring for someone with autism somehow becomes our calling and our blessing. We feel glued to the process, and we want the best for the ones we love.

He seems to have quite good pitch! When he stims he continuously matches the same pitch over and over
Reminds me of Kodi Lee from the tv show AGT so he may do well singing or even playing an instrument ( like his harmonica if he took lessons). When they do something musically, they seem to be the happy.

It was quite fascinating watching Darius and Chris stim together. Once Darius realised Chis was willing to communicate with him his way you could definitely tell there was an intention and rhythm to the process. Chris also allowed enough silence and space for Darius to lead the interaction.
So often people with autism are expected to conform to society without society making an attempt to meet halfway. The parents are beautiful people who radiate genuine love, acceptance and positivity. Thanks for allowing us to meet Darius.
I love what his father said “I don’t view him as different, I just recognize his limitations.” I watch Darius and his mom on IG. I had a cousin that was autistic, that i was raised with. He was like my sibling. In our family house, my grandfathers motto was the same as Darius’ father. I miss my cousin every day💯. Darius reminds me so much of him. I’m so thankful that his parents decided to share him with rest of the world❤️

Fr. Lotta people just associate autism with the kids and forget that autistic kids grow up to be autistic adults who might not be able to live like a normal adult and might need extra help. That’s not always the case though.
Autistic adults get erased way way too often unless we are fictional supergeniuses or billionaires.

How is he super smart? Where's the expression of his super smartness? Where does it manifests?
I know perfectly well that autistic individuals can be very smart, and it manifests; in paintings for example, or being very good at learning specific type of subjects.
But, this Darius don't seem especially smart, it seems the autism messed with his intellect; he acts like a small child.
I very bad for him and his parents. But to a degree also envious of him because he can completely ignore the pain of existence.

Me too. I have two kids with non-verbal autism. It terrifies me. Too many bad people in this world.. gives me a panic attack. Just take care of yourself. Walk a lot out in nature, eat lots of plant based food, drink only water and tea, limit stress, no smoking/drinking. You want to make sure you live as long as possible for your little boy. God Bless the both of you and I pray he is capable of becoming independent one day. Look into prebiotics, probiotics, juiced cilantro, wheatgrass, mushroom powder, charcoal, etc. Find ways to detox. It's hard when they are picky (like mine). Good luck.

Me too, my son is 10 and non verbal and he owns my heart. I'm terrified what will happen to him when my husband and me pass away.

I love that Darius’s mom says “ I don’t know” when asked what she think he is thinking while humming. Lots of parents of non verbal kids ( and adults for that matter) tells what their children thinks or feels, which I think are very patronising because unless someone in any way has communicated what they feel or think about anything other people actually don’t know.
I'm sure they don't mean to be patronizing. It's normal, as a parent, to attempt to understand what your child is thinking. But it's also fine to admit you don't know.

Imagine a world where everyone would hum, twirl, bounce, rock, flap, and chew whenever it felt good.. Where we could all unapologetically enjoy the perfect sounds and smells and textures, and where we can just disengage when it doesn't feel right.
Even though it is more vital for us autistics to be able to do this, I deeply wish that everyone could experience the joy and relief of this.

His mom is so loving, supportive, and amazing at communicating with him. You can tell how absolutely loved he is by the way that he smiles and interacts with people.
When you're stimming with him you're speaking his language.
So often we're trying to make them change to fit our world, and I can only imagine how incredibly difficult and exhausting that might be, so I think it's beautiful when we join them in their world and speak their language for a change...💕

music is a universal language! as an autistic person myself with a special interest in music, i adore how no matter where someone may be on the spectrum, if you love music, you make it your life! i absolutely love the way darius incorporates music and sound into his everyday life, and uses it as a way to communicate, stim, and express himself. what a beautiful family, with beautiful souls.

You connect with them on a deep level and know them as people and not a disability. My family has been following this beautiful journey for years. A few of these strong families have lost their angels, and we always send out love. I'm a caregiver to people with extra support requirements, and I love that Chris and his dedicated team are spreading understanding and helpful information.

Try it yourself!! The deep humming vibrates throughout, and stimulates the vagus nerve which is responsible for turning on your Parasympathetic Nervous System. So it’s like Darius is intuitively smart in knowing what calms him down.
I totally understand I have a 16 yr old with autism and nonverbal son. It is hard but we’ve gotta keep pushing.

I am blind, and I have a friend at school who is nonverbal and on the spectrum of autism. At the school he is very very very overstimulated and I try to help as much as possible. My friend inspired me to work with children with autism and other disabilities, such as being blind, and having down syndrome. One day I’m hoping to be a teacher for those who do have different disabilities than me, and I will continue to teach those children and make sure they get to their full potential. Thank you for making these videos and I’m happy to learn about different disabilities that I haven’t seen before. You are truly an amazing person and I hope you go really really far.
