I graduated HS that year and wish i could go back every day
Me too Jason. Great times!
1989 was my favorite year
I was a freshman, in '88-'89.
I guess we're relaxed now lol
Amen!
During the Loma Prieta earth quake I was a 43 year old police officer working in Marin County, Calif. (the north end of the Golden Gate bridge is anchored in Marin County) I had just called out for dinner at a restaurant while on my shift. A few minutes later the lights went out and the glass lights hanging overhead about 4 ft. a part started swinging and bashing into each other. A minute later I ran back to my car and started checking buildings in my area for gas leaks, injuries etc. The shift would last 24 hours before I got relieved to go to my home in Sonoma, County 30 miles north. I remember looking to the east and seeing fires burning in Oakland and Richmond, Calif across the bay. In the rear view mirror I could see fires burning in San Francisco and directly ahead to the north in the direction of my home town near Santa Rosa, Calif. fires were burning as well. I'm a retired two tour Vietnam combat Marine. I was used to see such scenes but not in our own neighborhoods.
I finished a 30 year career there in 2003. I moved to Phoenix, AZ. in 2007.
I visited San Francisco and Oakland about 6 months after the earth quake, I was amazed at how quickly they were able to clear-up the cities after such devastation. If I hadn't witnessed all the news coverage on TV, I would have never known there was a massive quake shortly beforehand. The only remaining evidence was the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was still closed. So much gratitude goes out to all you First Responders, both past and present...Thank You All!
Glad to hear you made it out. (Vietnam and commiefornia)
Semper Fi.
One of my best friends from high school was an engineer at Hyde Street Studios in '89. Being from Wisconsin, that was his first earthquake. Shook him up pretty good, no pun intended.
Thank you for your military service. It's because of God and Vietnam Vets like yourself that I'm alive and here in this great country. God bless you.
I remember that earth quake. That's all we talked about for about 5mos. straight in school and twice a week we had the school counselor come into our class to talk about the effects and trauma it had on people there and also how it spread to people who weren't there...all when we were in 5th grade!!
Oh, and uh .. I'm in AZ too, so hello fellow northern neighbor.
I was sitting at the kitchen table watching the World Series on a 13" black & white TV.
I was born in1989 and graduated from high school in 2008. Both of those years had an Indiana Jones movie and a Batman movie. And both Batman movies featured the Joker.
I was 32 years old, and it was my 4th year working at Kmart. Back, when Kmart was owned by Kmart Corporation. I miss Kmart and Sear's. But, I still remember the Blue Light Specials at Kmart.
I remember the new TV 📺Shows and Sitcoms that came on in 1989.
I will be turning 65 years old. How Time ⏲️Flies By.
P.S.,
I still remember all the Talk Shows that also came on TV 📺.
The blue light specials were so much fun. My mom would take all the kids and have us running all over the store. Do you remember those cookies that were like fig newtons, only they were iced and fruit flavors like apple, blueberry and strawberry?? Only Kmart sold them. If they were on a blue light special, we would get a whole bunch.
As another former KMart worker, I miss KMart, For a retail store It was a fun place to work (except for certain customers, LOL). It was a vastly different shopping experience Than "Wally World" Wally's just makes you want to leave as fast as possible. KMart WANTED you to linger (Hence the K-Cafés and the Blue Light Specials...) F**k Eddie Lampert for screwing up BOTH KMart AND Sears! I hate Wally World, So switched over to Target.
@@jamesslick4790
Yes he pretty much pillaged Sears. And wiped hisass with Kmart.
@@monkeywkeys3916 👍👍
@@jamesslick4790 The Kmart Store located on 50 N.Groesbeck Hwy and Cass in Mt. Clemens, Michigan closed permanently in 1996. I took 1 month of unemployment, and I got another job with Meijer, Meijer is a Superstore chain based in Grand Rapids, Michigan and a Kmart competition. I retired from Meijer in 2012.
I bought a 1987 IROC in 1989. So much fun that year living in Pensacola.
The 80s were definitely the best decade.
2000's was
1st year for Jr High for me. 12 years old back then. ❤
1989 was my most cherished year -- After knowing and dating my best friend for a few years, we married. Mot precious gift ever --- loving and being loved by an incredible, wonderful, kind, intelligent man.
Though we had 30 odd years together - the time was too short. Still, 1989 remains such a wonderful year --- It always will be.
Met my wife in '89 myself. Was a significant year for a lot of Gen Xers in one way or another.
I was only 7 in '89. Life was a whole lot more simpler. ❤
The year that I fell in love for the first time…the memories are bitter/sweet
Just turned 21 and, did my last deployment(Westpac)and got out of the Navy(Honorable conditions). Back then, you had to serve 4yrs to get and honorable discharge and i signed up for 3. But i finally got my honorable discharge while i was in the Navy Reserve.
1989 I was 14 years of age.
We saw;
Bat Man
Indiana Jones and the last Crusade.
Tango and Cash.
Road House and im sure other movies
that same year.
What an amazing time that will never be repeated.
I was 30 yrs old that year. What a wonderful time it was but those days are gone. Thanks for sharing this with us that watch your channel. Outstanding job sir. Thanks.
I'm half your age , I was 15 that year
19 in 89
32 in 89.What a year !
@@martinlynch6764 so much to do and things were cheap and made well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I was born in 1989
I remember watching with tears (literally) of joy watching The Wall fall. Something I had never thought I would ever see in my life time and Eastern Europe eventually being freed.
I miss the 80's I found my true love ...lost her 4 years ago to cancer
I think I lost my true love in 1989. Her mother blew it. Then I blew it. Then on 10 July 1989, Healdsburg, CA, my best friend was gone. She was only 19.
Im so sorry...
I only have vague memories of 1989. I was delving deep into recreational pharmaceuticals at the time. Not my most shining moment. They say you live and you learn. I say I survived and smartened up.
Methaqualone?
@@monkeywkeys3916 It was mostly cocaine, some mescaline and a little LSD.
Don't forget MDMA. It was actually MDMA.
This was the year I graduated. I remember a lot of what happened this year. So cool. Thank you, Recollection Road, for doing these videos. So great to remember the things that happened while I was growing up in the 80's.
Yes! I also graduated in May of 1989.
What an amazing time to be an 18 yr old kid!
89 the number, another summer (Get down)

I joined the USAF in 1989. I was in Basic Training when Hugo hit SC. My flight never heard a word of that hurricane until graduation day. I was in Tech School at Lowry AFB when the San Fran quake hit. I had a girl in my class who was from San Francisco. It took her over a month to get a hold of her family via telephone. 1989 is a year I will always remember mostly because of my senior training instructor at basic training. He was a little Hitler and made that summer something I will never forget.
@ C M, I joined the Air Force in 1989 also, but went to Lackland for basic in February of 90, I also was at Lowry for supply logistic training. I think I know who your TI was because one of my friends had him, they also called him little Hitler because of his mustache. Sounds like we may have even crossed paths then who knows
Did you miss Panama ?
The year I graduated from high school. Great memories.
Also in 1989…
Generations premiered on NBC.
Now You See It returns to CBS with new host, Chuck Henry.
“Tango & Cash” starring Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell was released.
The Mickey Mouse Club returns and aired on The Disney Channel. Their version was videotaped at Disney-MGM Studios in Florida, now Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Teen Win, Lose or Draw hosted by Marc Price premiered on The Disney Channel.
Actress Rebecca Schaeffer of “My Sister Sam” murdered at her apartment building in Los Angeles by Robert John Bardo. She was 21 years old.
Cosby show was the highest ranked series in 1989 followed by Roseanne.
To think, Cosby & Quaaludes were still ongoing.
I lived in San Jose California when the earthquake hit. My son was born in January of 1989.
I remember seeing batman the night before it came out at a prescreening. The theater was so packed we got the last seats all the way down in front and to the side. Spent the night at my friends house that night. The next day went to Great America with my friends and mooned people on the ride there and back.
I was born this year. I'm 33 today and to think I was brought into this world and existed during some of these historic moments blows my little mind. I was born on January 2nd a day after this year started. The world would never be the same once I came of age, my looks were so dashing and my intelligence unheard of. People started imitating my style and I started a revolution that changed humankind forever. I am the definition of sexy, I am the pinnacle of intelligence.
Wow i am also turning 33 1989 was a good year for us also are you a fan of anime and superhero"s like me
same here. 3rd May 1989..i got nostalgic thats why i watched this video.
I graduated in 89. Good times!
I was a Navy Commander on the USS Wainwright when Hugo slammed into Charleston SC. My wife and kids spent the night under a table as our Navy house blew apart. We were forced to take the ship out to sea before it hit. Charleston Port Authority wouldn't let us back in after Hugo move on due to the extensive damage to the port. We anchored out watching the extraordinary and very visible storm damage before going to Jacksonville, Fl to pick up relief supplies. It was a heck of an experience.
How are you sir...i was on the West coast stationed on the Belleau Wood finishing out my 2nd(and last cruise). I was stationed on her from 2 Jan 87 until 9 Jul 1989. Got out of the Navy on terminal leave 26 Jun 89.
Was a great year, most of it at least
the end of the 80s and it wouldn't be the same ever again. the music ; the TV shows . life wasn't the same.
one of my favorite Don Bluth movies came out in 1989 (All Dogs Go to Heaven), the only problem was I was just one year old when it did. I don't remember the 80s but I do remember the 90s. I miss the 90s so much. It is sad that Judith Barsy did not get to see it. So I just have to say rest in peace Judith Barsy and thank you Don Bluth for making my favorite animated movie of 1989 and my 90s childhood. :)
The marketing for the Batman movie was simple but brilliant: BAT SYMBOL
Great memory & perspective
Next week we start the 1990's with 1990 Flashback.
The earthquake disturbing the 1989 World Series was bad. At the end, the A's win in a clean sweep against the Giants.
Also in 1989…

I started high school in 1989. Seems like a simple time compared to today.
The year i came into the world July 20 1989..I'm blessed to be an 80s baby
The last good decade.
I was right in the middle of the Loma Prieta quake. I had just left work and was on Army St in S.F. Fun times!
The Scorpions “Winds of Change “ comes to mind.
‘89 wasn’t a bad year for me.
Good interest rates at the bank, and jobs were easier to find and there was something called discretionary income, lower healthcare costs, food was cheap, etc.
The day Gameboy was released in North America was the day the legendary "Death of a Goldfish" episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood from 1970 aired on PBS for the final time.
Also in 1989…
“Prancer” starring Sam Elliott, Cloris Leachman, Michael Constantine and Rebecca Harrell was released.

Card Sharks, hosted by Bob Eubanks on CBS.
The New Hollywood Squares, hosted by John Davidson in Syndication.

I lived through Hugo in Charlotte NC, hurricane force winds 200 miles from the coast dropped hundreds if not 1000s of trees in the area. I was without power for 10 days in a new Condo. It truly was survival mode for the city the first week, finding food and groceries at anywhere with power.
I was living in Raleigh at the time and remember it well. I later moved to Charlotte in 1991. You remember Hugo's diner on South Blvd?
I too live in Charlotte now as i did when Hugo hit ,What a night of howling winds and trees cracking !!!
My grandparents lost some big trees in their yard in Charlotte from Hugo.
I graduated high school that year. 🎓
This is to year I graduated high school... I wore a pink long sleeve polo shirt with a narrow blue tie and a pair of 501 jeans with white sneakers. California
Hugo came all the way inland to Charlotte NC, some 200 hundred miles. Some folks did not have power for a couple months.
LOL I was 26 or so, in Mayport Florida, between deployments, so I was partying too much to remember a lot of these events! ;)
Gosh, 1988 and 1989 were probably the best years of my young life. I was on top of the world, and anything seemed possible. Awesome decade, awesome memories.

The 89 world series was unfair because the earthquake gap allow Oaklands top pitchers Dave Stewart and Mike Moore to dominate and each pitch 2 games with plenty of rest.
Even though the first short appearance was mentioned in the '87 Flashback, on DECEMBER 17TH the Fox broadcast network debuted the first full episode of The Simpsons, which on February, 2022 is still running after 717 episodes. Believe it is at least the 2nd longest running (# of episodes) animated show worldwide after the Dragon Ball franchise (there maybe someone else, but I can't remember).
"Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" (a.k.a. "The Simpsons Christmas Special") was the first full episode that aired on Fox (Sunday, December 17, 1989). "The Simpsons" would become a regularly-scheduled series four weeks later.

The peaceful transfer of power in the United States of America from Ronald Reagan (40) to George H. W. Bush (41) on a very cold and clear day, if I recall correctly.
A far more significant event missing: the murderous Tiananmen Square massacre. No mention of the invasion of Panama or Joe Montana's Super Bowl win, either.

1989 was the year my sister graduated High School as she graduated from Nottingham (Hamilton North) High School in Hamilton Township, NJ. Would go on a cruise for the first time when our family did the DISNEY/PREMIER CRUISE week where we went to WALT DISNEY WORLD for four nights with a three night PREMIER CRUISE to The Bahamas. Can't believe you left out Tiananmen Square.
Because he's only focusing on events that happened in America. The tagline in his videos is always "Life in America".
True mate, but this is all about America, and no mention of the Hillsborough Disaster either???
Hurricane Hugo was also filmed on a whole episode of Rescue 911 back in 1991.
Thank you for your thoughtful videos. I'm curious as to why the historic Tiananmen Square was left out of this video?
Your work is appreciated
Seriously. Lots of sports references but nothing about a revolution leading to a massacre.
He's only focusing on events in America, not world-wide. Every video has the subtitle "Life in America", so events in other countries have pretty much been left out.
Agreed. It's events in America, but that was so huge...

One year later, in October of 1990, at 27, I got the worst, most unexpected news of my life - I somehow "tested positive for the AIDS virus" as my doctor informed me. It's been quite a "life", certainly not what I expected, but I am grateful every day God gives me. Be good to people - too much darkness in the world these days and do the best you can, believe in "goodness" and be happy.
Unlike many others, you survived. Just like Magic Johnson.
I remember too well that the AIDS crisis had a profound effect on young adults’ sex lives, and I was so nervous that I went to the county health department to get an HIV test. The 2 week wait to return for the results was nerve wracking. Fortunately, I was negative, and the counselor gave great explicit advice on how to play it safer.
Nowadays, the tests can be found in drugstores.
@@diatribe5 Yup, Dia Tribe (great name....), those two weeks were AWFUL. Even worse was when I didn't hear back from my doctor, then she didn't return my phone messages. Then I received a letter in the mail asking me to come to her office to discuss my test results. I'm intelligent - I had to confront the truly unbelievable thought that maybe.....OMG, Dia, I truly went into a state of shock and my senses became "protected" for the couple of days until my appointment, the "positve" result and downfall. I truly was numb with shock for a couple of weeks, then massively depressed. I had jus lost my Mom in January, terribly sad for me, and had begun my "new LIFE" by getting a job at NYUCD, and planned to get my Masters degree. That life never happened.....if it wasn't for NYUCD- the people I worked with, the students - I would not have survived. God bless them all......Dia, thanks. Be good to all people and enjoy life. And over in England this year we had the terrible Hillsborough Football stadium disaster in which nearly 100 people were crushed to death and the 33rd anniversary of this awful day was yesterday (15th April), the Kegworth aircraft accident where the pilot narrowly missed crashing onto a Motorway, Arsenal sensationally became League Champions with the last kick of the season, Liverpool won an emotional F.A. Cup final, Nottingham Forest won the League Cup.

1989 was a great year. I got married and moved to then West Germany with my wife. I was in the USAF living in a small village. We traveled Western Europe and enjoyed seeing many landmarks. No mention of the Tiananmen Square massacre? Does China's malevolent influence extend to Recollection Road?
When I saw “1989” that was the 1st thing that came to mind. Hmmmm
For what it's worth....
From Bamberg, W. Germany...
1/54th Inf., 1st Armored Division...
We were well aware of what all was transpiring during this time. It had been going on for weeks by this time, and finally it got the whole world's attention.
Us guys at Warner Barracks were tuned into this day after day... after day...after day...
As American soldiers we knew that we would never intervene in such internal affairs with a vast country such as China. Long before the Berlin Wall fell, we were hoping, and expecting the Wall of China to go down...
It never happened. But that lone guy who stood in front of that column of tanks was never forgotten. Never...
Tiananmen Square
@@maxmulsanne7054 He is a true international hero and symbol of the man's desire for liberty. It was a beautiful moment in Chinese history -- so, naturally, the Chines Communist Party crushed it.
As European communism died in 1989, Chinese communism grew stronger.

There were other news events in 1989, but as you indicated earlier I don't see how Recollection Road forgot about this unless he was not around then:
Berlin Wall coming down, yes.
Operation Just Cause, yes.
But to not remember this event is a bit unexpected.
Tiananmen Square revolt was THE NEWS of the summer of 1989.
I was one of the few guys in the barracks that bought a German TV to watch movies and such. And when this was happening myself and some of the guys would watch this during lunch and nightly news to keep updated on it, because we had Never seen anything like this before happen in China of all places.
When _'Tank Man'_ appeared on the news, we all got silent and of course our jaws justed dropped with how brave he was and insane that situation was transpiring.
Pardon my lack of the proper use of the King's English but one of the guys who saw that said _"That guy has some of the biggest balls I've seen."_ The rest of us chimed in _"Fuckin' A right man! This is some crazy sh*t!"_ We really couldn't believe what we were watching.
We were young and naive then. Thinking and hoping for China that democracy would prevail. Needless to say, on June 4th that all changed and we were quiet about it afterwards. Just being thankful that we didn't live under a regime like China's government.

Also in 1989, Sports Illustrated for Kids, a Sports Illustrated spinoff was launched. The first cover of the magazine was Basketball hall of famer, Michael Jordan. They have sports cards and posters. Other athletes were on the cover before including Barry Sanders, Jerry Rice, Kevin Johnson, Grant Hill, Wayne Grazety, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, Nolan Ryan, Steve Yzerman, Dominick Hasek, Patrick Roy, Brett Hull, Derek Jeter, Iaish Thomas, and more. 2 of my cousins love to read Sports Illustrated for Kids as well as me in the early years.
