  • This Science Garage hits the road to talk with Formula Drift driver, Odi Bakchis. Odi runs his own suspension company, and makes coilovers for all the sick cars that need them. He runs us through the ins and outs and ups and downs for performance suspension and coilovers. We talk about what makes one coilover better than another, and how to know you’re getting a suspension upgrade that does more than just look good!

I like how Bart is speaking quietly. He’s being taught something and it shows that he is taking all of the information in. He’s truly paying attention. Despite teaching us about cars a lot, he’s not ashamed to be the student here and there. You never stop learning. Even if he already knew every single thing, he still stayed humble.

I was thinking that throughout the whole video. not only am I a beginner at learning mechanics but english isn't even my first language. so basically the good old "draw it for me as you would for a little kid works better" XD couldn't really keep up with all the info so a visual representation is a lot more useful to me and other beginners. still I learned so much from science garage the past year :D this added to the mechanics in the driver's manual necessary for driving school and what I learned from experimenting with the tuning in Forza Horizon ( lmao I know ) are really starting to pay off. Something I've always pondered about - magnetic damping. I've seen videos of a neodymium magnet dropped through a copper tube, it goes very slowly because of eddy current resistance - a form of damping, with force proportional to speed. Could someone build a shock using this principle? Would be extremely simple, and no fluid to leak. Could get more adjustability by using an electromagnet so force can be adjusted very quickly, still very simple and with very cheap components. No sliding seals, just linear bearings (which would be fairly simple to replace) so it ought to last forever. Would want to put fins on the outside for cooling, but internal components would not get hot as the heat is generated by eddy currents in the outer tube.

Essentially the fluid inside has metal shavings or a metallic flavor to it. When a magnetic field is applied to the fluid its viscosity changes and "clogs" the orifaces so it gives you different rebound and dampening settings "on the fly" by different electronic signals.
Kinda old tech from GM in the late 90s. The whole story is its British made by GM money that was sold off to Chinesw investors.
But the damper changes for each corner of a track by gps is kinda new. Also F1 started to play with programmable suspension in the 90s (I think) until it was banned because it worked so well.

Love the new format, [new show?] but please don’t abandon the classic Science Garage format!
You know, Bart yelling a lot!

I love Feal suspension, and this is in no way a dig at Odi, the dude knows suspension, but I went with Fortune Auto for one reason: The warranty. Fortune offers a 5 year warranty, Feal, 1. They’re of similar price point and quality but that warranty simply can’t be beat.

I wish Odi and FEAL would bring back their rally suspension...I know he isn't in that scene anymore but their system was a great system for the money.
