  • [IRFCA] On March 9, 2010, thanks to the efforts of Syed Samar Hussein of Lucknow, I had the privilege of reliving the pleasure of seeing a Metre Gauge Steam Engine steam up and actually move on its own power.

    The magic and romance of steam locomotives is legendary. Nothing that modern technology delivers can match the nostalgia of getting bits of ash in your eye during the journey. I recently travelled on Spain's fastest train....you might as well have been sitting in an aircraft. Please save old WP 7656 located at Jhansi Senior Railway Institute. She is rusting away silently and is unprotected from the weather.

    Dear Ramu Naidu I was so happy to read your comment about you seeing these beautiful steam locos when you were studying in MCC in TBM . I was born in TBM where my father was a electric train driver on the TBM to Madras Beach line . Am also an old boy of MCC whe the great Mr Chandran Devanesan was princey . I used to stand and admire these steam locos when going to school every morning in TBM and count how many were in the loco shed .TBM was a beautiful place in the 60 s so peaceful and clean I now live in Melbourne Australia from 1984 but I still love my TBM and miss it a lot . Keep in touch and all the very best to you from an old MCCian

    Steam locos had a beauty and majesty of their own! Each engine had a distinct personality!
    We so loved them! On every Railway, they should run steam locos at least for a 100 km on one route, as a living historical reminder.

    During our childhood in Belgaum we had really enjoyed seeing steam engines in station.It was wonderful to see that locomotive drivers wearing khaki shorts with dark coloured t-shirt with bidi on one corner of his mouth .sweat on the face and before starting the train he used to give sweet vistle of the engine.SOME DRIVERS USED TO TAKE A PEG ALSI.

    I have observed that almost all steam engines in India were having a set of two or three drive wheels .Whereas in Western countries steam engines are with the set of three to five drive
    wheels.Speed and power of steam engines depends on the the diameter and numbers of drive wheels . Mewari Queen is maintained nicely. Very nice video. Thanks.

    YG's were used mostly as goods(cargo) trains or passenger trains. YP's were the ones used for express trains.
    where can one find nice photos of these Indian steam trains.

    I hear the whine of a turbine. Does it use a small steam turbine for generating electric power or is that sound something else?

    I had been to the Rewari shed last month....there are about 4 YP / YGs in total, and they are confined to 2 sidings with no mainline connections as metre gauge no longer exists. They just move in and out of the shed, with nowhere to go. Really wonder why these cannot be refitted for broad gauge.

    • @qpr543
      @qpr543 Před 2 lety

      Some of them can be moved to heritage meter gauge lines. e.g. Ooty, Junagadh ...

      All Indian Locomotives have the RDSO Standard of 'Air Brake Enabled' before they can operate, so that's a small compressor powered by a diesel generator to raise pressure in brake pipes. All the brake pipes are also retrofitted after RDSO Standards
