You really can take on the general contractor role and save big on your building and remodeling projects. In this video, we share with you how we installed a three piece crown molding with indirect lighting behind it. It's an inexpensive project that can totally change the look of any room. - Jak na to + styl
I did this in my living room 16 years ago. It looked great and was a real feature when I sold the house. Indirect lighting is awesome.
+peggyt1243 Do you like the low voltage strip light? waterproof one. maybe you can look here:
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Z5OYSQ8?m=A373EGBA5EEVS4&qid=1456988723&ref_=sr_1_1&s=merchant-items&sr=1-1
How did you clean the lighting strip?
Great video, I have used a Trim-Tex 5" Glue On Crown Molding (with light channel) it basically is all three pieces you showed with a built in channel for 1/2" rope light.
Very nice! I had always wanted to know how to do this. My grandmother had this in her kitchen and I always thought it was very relaxing.
my first impression was woow I know how to do that .... that's the beauty about trim finish carpentry is that it has no limits ... love the video
..keep it up
Thank you
The lighting gives the crown molding a very dramatic look, very nice!
This turned out awesome. Now it’s my favorite room in the house! Thanks!
Nice classes,Beautiful work! I like all of the work job's well done,it's great to see that is nothing turn in to something
I wish I saw this video before I installed crown molding in my living room. I love the lighting option.
Didn’t think about painting the inside of the trim. Great advice! Thanks.
I'm remodeling a house that will be available for rent soon. ...I can't wait to do this on the master bedroom. ...my tenants are gonna luv it ;-) thanks for the video. ..great job. ..
This video is so underrated! I'm planning on doing something similar since I bought a house and realized I didn't have any recessed lighting in my living room / no attic space since there is a room sitting on the top.
Thanks for the nice comment.
Better late than never! Just found this june 2016. what a great idea!
I found it in 2020..
4/2021!
8/2021
I like the accent lighting. Makes the interior of the home look more expensive, high end. I found that after about 2-1/2 years, incandescent rope lights will show signs of overheating and blackening if left on for long periods of time such as a night light. It was mounted in a similar fashion as this video shows. So, don't use it as a night light. I wouldn't leave them on for more than about 2-3 hrs at a time. I would go with LEDs from my experience.
wow great job
I like using christmas lights, those 50/100 lights on a string. I just set them up in the crevice and, after 3 years, they still work. But then again I don't keep them on night & day. Just a few hours a night
How bad is the dust collecting?
@@daug1783 Probably rough but I wonder if you could put some kind of clear cover over top
Hi, great video! Could you tell me the space between the top of the crown and the ceiling?
Nice job, I think the build up looked pretty good even before you put the crown up.
this is so awesome and creates a cool effect to house for a low budget thanks a lot for sharing
My only complaint about this video is that I didn't see it before remodeling my house. The concept is fantastic which makes me even more depressed I've already completed crown molding throughout the house. Great video!
I had this put in my bathroom, it looks amazing! I love to keep it on the lowest & use it as a night light. I love how the light, lights up the bathroom so evenly.. And just love the look of how you can get a different feel with it being bright or dim..
+Denise Long Shiflett the moisture is gonna screw them up overtime..
+DS channel You shouldn't have a problem if you prime any bare wood (including back side) and seal any cut edges...this will keep the moisture from being absorbed by the wood.
+Armchair Builder yes we did do that :)
+DS channel I don't think it will, the guy who did it, builds houses & has this in his bathroom for 9 yrs. no problems :)
OMG I would love to see that I bet it's so pretty.
Love this idea. Exactly what I was looking for.
One word, actually two words: that's beautiful!
all i can say is wonderful, i will try this. thank you Brian
I had this in mind but with leds, their brighter and are only 12 volts, and their pretty nice too
Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you! Great video!
If I am using a one piece crown molding (5 1/4 inches), what is the best way to fasten this to the wall. Not sure nails at the bottom only will be enough.
You could actually have it setup with Alexa, if you used the Phillips Hue light strips with extensions along with the Phillips hub. You’d of course need a Echo Dot to operate via voice, but that’s how I have my smart home setup and I love it.
Excellent indirect lighting. Excellent project. Watching here with full support from Canada 🇨🇦.
looks awesome. I may have to do this. thanks for sharing
Love it! Great job and wonderful idea!
That's a fantastic setup, thanks for sharing it
Hi, that is very impressive. But can you tell me how far down from the ceiling to the edge of the first layer,(not the crown) please?
excellent work.. nice detail and perfect finish..
Amazing works. It looks simple for DIY
Hi Jc. The bottom edge of the lowest piece of molding is about 7.5 inches from the ceiling
Great video, exactly what I’m looking to do myself. May I ask what the spacing is between the top of the crown and the ceiling?
2-3/4" from the ceiling to the top edge of the crown.
Are there written dimensions or directions for this project??
very classy 3 layer design!
Any ideas for a return to go back to the crown at the wall/ceiling? I can't seem to wrap my head around it!
I did this exact same process after I watched this video and mine still looks and works great no sagging no swelling I've repainted it once in 4 years just because I have OCD but great video and thanks for sharing...
I made a mistake for the dislike! SORRY!
Amazing!!!! Thx for the demo. I'm all in!
What a great idea! Thanks so much for sharing!
wow that looks amazing!
Hi. Excellent posting. I am right in the middle trying to figure out the lighting arrangements in my basement. I have a question - how do you manage potential excess lighting tube once reaching back to the end of the room?
Many thanks
Jonas
Cool idea, doing this project this weekend. Thanks!
mounted my 4.5'' crown about a half inch from the ceiling and used incandescent (the cheap ones) christmas lights on a remote control dimmer switch. I didnt install an outlet. my closet doors use to go to the ceiling so when i framed them down i left the backside open and poked a hole in the drywall to fish the wires through to where the outlet was installed in the closet. i bet your outlet idea is more up to code than mine.
this is amazing!!!!! thank you so much for sharing.
this is awesome ! great idea, many possibilities!
Excellent job... I love it .
You may want to include the materials list in the description.
Eventually i would like to do that to my entire first floor lol I already have the outlet added within my tray ceiling in my foyer when i built my house. But i did not think about doing it to the whole first floor. It's gonna look amazing, i cant wait lol It's all about the resale value at the end of the day lol I also have a tv about the tub in my master bathroom.
Looks great. great explanation on installing....will try
Awesome! Thinking of doing this except to hide speaker and data cables instead of lighting. Might just throw in some LED strips while I’m at it too. Might as well. Right?
Thank you for the great info!
Thankyou so much! This is helps me a lot ^^
Very impressive work.
muy bonito y facil y economico trabajo thanks bro
Fantastic video. After all is said and done, about how tall is the gap between the ceiling and the top of the crown molding?
Great instruction and tutorial....
Awesome. How did you attach the moulding to the back peice? The contact area is very small, so was a nail enough?
I love what you are doing
Definitely cool. I need to do this!!!
good job, very impressive!
that is AWESOME! Great Share!
HOLA, ERA LO QUE ESTABA BUSCANDO,HABIA VISTO OTROS MAS COMPLICADOS Y ESTE SE ME HACE MUY FACIL, LE DIRE A MI HIJO, PUES ES MUY BUENO PARA HACER TRABAJOS DE RENOVACION, GRACIAS.
So cool! I am going to do this to my house.
Love it! I will have to add this somewhere in my house lol
I like this video and glad I watched now to know better about the rope lights :)
excellent video..thank you.
excellent instructional video.
Great design vid
Bingo! Really cool would you advise neon or RGBW and led strip or rope ?
How far down should the recessed outlet be installed?
Nice video! Thank you.
Do you still 45 the crown molding for the inside & outside joint?
Great job! Just want to ask the ideal distance between the tip of the crown molding and the ceiling? Thank you.
Conrado Pioquinto Hi Conrado. I personally think 3-4" down from the ceiling is perfect. This allows the light from behind the crown to cascade up the wall and onto the ceiling. Of course this is all about personal opinion...so go with what works for you.
Hi Ian. The light came from Lowes...but I know HD has a similar product.
Hey Mr.builder what is the exact name for this light at lowes? thanks
Bri Cole rope light

Buy wentop RGB5050 from Amazon. I prefer the weather proof version. It's not actually weather proof but more durable. Wentop customer service is also great. I own two 8ft strips and 1 16ft strip
Hi
Where did you purchase the light?
What is the clearance from the top of the crown to the ceiling?
Very nice work
I love the idea, I have a little confuse with the measures can you explained in inches, sorry I’m not a carpenter
Need some help with trying to do this. From the top of my window moulding to my ceiling I only have about 3 1/2 inches and in another room I have 5 inches. Second issue is that I have parts of the ceiling that meet up to sloped walls (just one part of the bedroom). Obviously don't want to put the moulding down the slope but could end at top of slope (which is a roof line seeing as I have a dormer added on to house) and just cut a piece to put on end? May need some in depth help with it. Thanks!
I think it's going to be tough to fit the crown into a space that is only 3-5" from ceiling to top of window. And yes, one way to handle a wall that slopes is to end the crown and return it to the wall with a small piece. That's if you don't want it to be installed on an angle (which can be done...but honestly, I'm not crazy about it). You could then restart the crown at the next level. You will most likely need several wall outlets to connect the switch to so that each section of lighting comes on at the same time. Hope this helps.
5:06 Any reason you don't cope your moldings? Will it affect light dispersion?
We did cope some of them...depending on the wall angles. No, it didn't affect the light.
Really nice!
great video...thanks
Rope light? Multi-colored LED rope tape lights are the new rave. Brighter, too!
+VanHustler Tape lights are nice...but they are typically much more expensive.
Got a nice 15 ft roll off ebay for only $13. It includes the adapter kit & remote changer with free shipping. Not the cheap chinese stuff either.
+VanHustler It sounds like you got a great deal. I will have to look for our next project. Thanks
No doubt. with the selectable multicolor LEDs, you would be set up for any occasion.
Be careful from Ebay. All my LED's for car, house, etc, are going bad in only 6 months. Now probably going to buy from Home Depot.
these lights are $15 for 20' at Big Lots closeout stores. it is an item they always carry.
what are the measurements/ sizes of the pieces wood used as a guide
Hello, Thanks for the video. What's the voltage/wattage of the lights you used and are they the waterproof kinds or no? Thanks again!
Hi Tiffany. The lights plug into a standard wall outlet (120v, 60 Hz). Each light is 4 watts. And yes, these are the indoor/outdoor lights.
Hi there, I love how you did this. But I was wondering if you can tell me where I could find these indirect lights please
Dardan Beqiri home depot or Lowe's
Great idea! I'd love to do this in my kitchen and dinning area, but I wouldn't want it in the hall. How would you suggest transitioning from crown moulding against the ceiling in the halls to the crown moulding with the space between the crown and the ceiling?
Great Job! I want to do similar for a Theater Room I am building. One question: Did you include any support for the top half of the crown or is is only supported by the nails in the trim piece. I am just wondering about so much upper crown being unsupported. Should I install some backing block every so often? Thanks again.
+rebadaddy We didn't use any support for the top half of the crown...although it's not a bad idea. If you do, make sure you keep it out of the way of the lighting, you don't want to cause the light to be of differing intensities along the length of the molding. If you nail and glue the bottom half of the crown, you should be OK.
Does it stay on all the time?
Really nice
Well done. Thanks.
You can buy 20foot led for $12 on wish. Just buy a month ahead of time and you'll be fine. Slow ship times are worth the savings. I've done my entire 5000sqft house for under $200
Buy from aliexpress not wish
@@twiggyleaff could you sent the direct link for this product there ? skype:jose.rumbaut
@birnzy yeah
@birnzy you can buy 18ft on amazon for 18 and they arrive next day. Wish is gonna take over a month
@birnzy best of luck
How many hours did it take u to compete. And how many liniar sq ft was thus job
Nice ..I like that. Thank you.
awesome job, super nice.
'
My problem is that the lengths never add up the same with the rope light. I either need a few feet more or less. I’ve used LED because it can be cut to the length needed, but have had trouble with some of the LEDs going bad over time.
Michael, Nice video! Could I suggest using Creative Crown moldings that are one piece. They are made for indirect lighting with our flat back design. Great info on the wiring. Thats very helpful.
Interesting product Glenn. What is the price per lineal foot for say 5 inch material?
Armchair Builder Michael, It cost in the low $2.00 per foot. It saves a bundle on labor. Install it on drywall, brick, stucco metal and more. It installs with painters caulk. No nailing.
This is so awesome and creates a cool effect to house for a low budget thanks a lot for sharing.
What is a distance would you recommend to keep between ceiling and grown molding...ceiling and receptacle?
+mvit2000 The distance between the ceiling and the top of the crown depends on the height of the ceiling. If the ceiling is a standard 8', 3-4" should work.
+Armchair Builder I have 9'
