Candela Obscura is an ongoing monthly horror drama that follows an esoteric order of investigators as they use centuries of knowledge to fight back against a mysterious source of corruption and bleed. Leveraging gaming as a story mechanic, the series features the Candela Obscura tabletop roleplaying game from Darrington Press, which is built on the Illuminated Worlds system.

I wish we could get 4-Sided Dives for Candela or something similar. Session Zeros are great, but I also need a "what the hell were you thinking?" at the end of it all.
Oh gods, yes! Some kind of deep dive into Candela would be marvelous!
I think what would be a great call would be to release these Char creation videos ahead of the campaign as promotion and then do Candela Dives afterwards the campaign.

Yeah, you can definitely see why a lot of VAs mentioned having really enjoyed having him as a director, even before CR was a thing.
He also utilizes one of my favorite GM tactics (one that my husband, also a GM, often uses), which is that the more horrifying or tense a situation is, the quieter he speaks, so your players are leaning in more and more even as they're mentally recoiling, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Loved the character Katy created. It's unfortunate she had a scheduling conflict. Would have loved to have seen her character interact with the others. If there is any way to bring Katy back that would be awesome. Despite that, I loved the Crimson Mirror chapter. Each new chapter gets more intriguing. Love, love, love Candela Obscura!
I think I detected a bit of what Grimoria eventually became in Katy's character, though - that talk of experiencing past lives made me think of the old priest who Grimoria channeled in the first episode, for example.

Hearing about Katy's character concept makes me *so sad* that she wasn't able to play in this Circle! I truly hope she's able to come back and be in another one some time soon!
Easily my favorite Chapter and Circle, by FAR. (And sad we missed having Katy at the table, but hopefully in the near future!) And Liam's love for Candela just SHINES through in this -- he was not kidding about how he'd steeped himself in the lore and worldbuilding and all of it, and then having Taliesin at his table gave it even more depth. Loved it.
The same here. I hadn't thought anyone could beat Matt as a GM, but Liam did, by a far margin. I had no idea he could do the creepy so well!

We almost had Katy... I met her at dragoncon and she's so nice. It would've been so cool to see her on CR. Hoping for another chance to see her play
Liam’s ability to break hearts as a player and as a gm is uncanny 😭
I like that early groundwork he set of stating that there will be jokes/levity as an emotional pressure valve, but to keep in mind that this is something of a horror game, and both players and characters are encouraged to lean into that. It's not a "no fun zone", but the tone of the setting would make a comedic/joke character disruptive to the vibe being aimed for.
He totally stole that from Aabria 😂

I recommend this video for anyone who wants to learn the world of Candela Obscura. Liam was very didactic describing various events, places and situations in this world. Fascinating to see the creation of the Crimson Mirror Circle. This video is a guide. It's a shame that Katy ended up not participating in the story, her character seemed interesting.
Love Imari knowing so much about the worldbuilding and pitching in ideas
I cannot be the only who enjoys these session 0 moments more than the game itself. 🤗 That said, this was hands down my fave Circle to date.

If you're familiar with Alexander's work at all, you'd know that's actually his field of expertise 😂 especially his character Jasper in Vampire The Masquerade: L.A. By Night, so to see Edgar get the same treatment here, was a welcomed return to pain character creation 😂
Hopefully we get to see Liam GM more Candela in the future :3

I was excitingly waiting for this since episode one of Crimson Mirror! This is my favorite group and Liam as the DM was very good!
I look forward to seeing how Liam rises to this challenge. I expect unique, neat, competent, and story-forward.

This is always my absolute favorite, I love that this part gets posted. For this group I'm super confused why Malcom's actor seemed so put out during gameplay when he was out of a scene after getting a scar, Liam did such a fantastic job explaining that mechanic to them.
Was that the moment in the last session? If so, I sympathise with him, I think that one was unearned and maybe Liam's only mistake as GM. Seemed very forced.
@@ilmari1452 It was, idk I definitely felt like he wasn't being the most gracious scene partner or listening to the rest of the cast, I was getting frustrated for them bc he interrupted several scenes & tried to override Liam more than once. Basically the metagaming got in the way of storytelling and I was glad when the other cast members finally shushed him for interrupting Grimoria's big moment.
@@breawilldraw I get what you mean. I think he felt Liam's ruling was a bit unfair (that almost off-hand brain mark that just happened to take him down, leading to his death). In his defence, that was an extreme result (2 marks) from a single mixed success rolled by Alex in a PVP moment... that was triggered by Mal trying to help him. It *was* very cruel, and Liam could certainly have just given him the body mark and then let him knock Dr Lisaght out or something.
BUT I agree that at the end of the day, GM's decision is law, and he could have been more gracious.
To be fair Liam didn‘t give Imari a storytelling opportunity, he took his character away from him which led to Malcolm‘s death. I think I would have been a bit pissed at that as well.
I really wish Liam would have taken a page out of Aabria‘s and Spenser‘s book and given Imari and Alex a bit more of a heads-up „if you you do not roll a full success on this, you will get a brain and your character will become an NPC for the rest of the game“ or something like that. Just a bit more than what Imari got.
But I also agree that towards the end both him and Aimee tended to interrupt scenes a lot and that also got very… distracting.

I saw it more as he’d had his turn and didn’t read the room to see that not only did his party NOT want to set the thing on fire, but Edgar was having a pivotal character moment where it wasn’t appropriate for Malcom to step in and take the weapon away from him. I’m on Liam’s side only bc Malcom’s actor kept making side comments overriding other character decisions in that whole scene plus the way he was mad when Liam wouldn’t let him do multiple actions on his turn, it seems like his impatience to be the hero of the story got in the way and I was honestly glad that he had to share the spotlight for the last act

That would be good but it might cause an uproar. People get mad when another dm replace's Matt for an episode. But people might riot if its for a whole campaign. But it would be cool to see Liam do a full hundred episode campaign.
Nah, we don't want episodes to last 5-6 hours on average, even if Liam is a good DM

Can someone please clarify what Liam and the group were talking about @ time stamp: 1:33:00, when he mentions 'pyre agents' and staged murders to gain land? I assumed this was an anecdote of the world they were creating. Everyone in the group seemed to understand what he was talking about but i got confused and lost the thread. So i started searching Google for what i then thought was another famous event in history, like the 'Beast of Gevaudan' but found nothing 😅lol. Thank you ✌️❤

Ho lord! I thought Alex said "the next b*tch" when he said "the next page" and my brain went into some kind of error.
Kind of shook only one person in the comments has mentioned how awkward and weird Imari's "crush" and "soulmate" labeling of Grimoria and Synamynt was. Maybe it was just my own discomfort coloring things, but folks at the table seemed pretty uncomfortable too. I hope everyone had fun and had a good time and that any weirdness was handled off camera, since Malcom having any sort of "attraction" to Grimoria didn't really show up in the game itself.

the guy ding the handless artist could do a side bit where he is teaching his other hand to do his art work but hasnt gotten very good yet with it ... or at least says that .... and then you can bring in some type of auto drawing where his lost hand controls his good hand to draw some foreshadowing event ... or a premonition ... etc

I want to say in the topic of kids talking to ghosts. As kids, we dont have a barrier against that, as we are not taught to think or fear the dead or ghosts. My family has told a similar story to what Liam said about the kid in the car, who talked to the granddad. I fully believe in ghosts and have from time to time seen them in my teen and adult years, but my spiritual connection has not been the best
