I have been a big cycling fan since the early 1980's and I am a massive CAV fan. I truly hope he gets the chance again to get that 35th TDF stage win! Making that documentary and really opening up about mental health was such a brave thing for an elite professional athlete to do. I have suffered with Complex PTSD for 35 years so I can empathise with what he has gone through. It is because of people like CAV speaking out it is a lot less likely mental health sufferers are seen as weak! Until you go through it yourself you could never understand the strength of character it takes! I am proud of you CAV for all you have achieved and for being so brave opening up! Great film!

As a fellow cyclist I have to say, thank you for doing this podcast with Mark!! His so relatable and yet so individually out of reach as an athlete it’s incredible. His story, his legacy… his given us more than we can wish for as cycling fanatics! Having that one additional win will only add to the legacy his already created, i trust he will get it! I trust the pack will be there when he needs them to make it happen 🫶🏽 cant wait to see it!

Let's be honest without the physical and mental health issues and some terrible crashes, CAV would have taken that TDF stage win record beyond 40 proven by the fact he was written off and years later when given the chance won 4 more stages! I have every confidence if he is in another TDF squad he will get his 35th stage!

@@merckxy54 surely I thought gcn should have discussed to debate this top at some stage in the past, me myself I think cav is probably a better sprinter than merkxx could have been as back then I reckon he would have been in front on breakaways and hadn't a need to sprint, plus the bikes back then wouldn't have been as dynamic.

What a great interview. It's clear that Mark is able to be very introspective and honest with himself, which is something we're not all capable of being. He shouldn't have regrets about being, as he says, "a dick" when he was younger. We were all naive and somewhat thoughtless in our youth, and we weren't even superstar athletes. But the fact that his head is on straight now and he's able to see things from other perspectives will make him a happier person, a better person, and a better father. I really hope to see him win #35 this year, it's well deserved and I can only hope when he does it, the sprinter from Deceuninck comes in second. I have a grudge against that team since they left him off the Tour team last year, and they used to be my favorite team with Alaphilippe and Cav and the best lead out train in the business.

00:25 🚴 Mark Cavendish won an impressive 34 stages of the Tour de France, attributing success to learning from both positives and negatives in racing and in life.
02:32 🎥 The Netflix documentary on Cavendish's mental health journey received overwhelmingly positive feedback, prompting him to expose his true self despite feeling vulnerable.
04:52 🧠 Cavendish's perspective on mental health shifted from dismissing it as an excuse to deeply understanding its impact, realizing the importance of taking it seriously.
06:32 🗣 Cavendish moved away from exploiting competitors' weaknesses, choosing positivity over negativity and refraining from smack talk, emphasizing personal growth and kindness.
09:02 🕊 He discovered that letting go of negativity, though a reliable fuel, lightened the load, focusing more on joy in every aspect of his cycling career.
10:39 🚴 Cavendish's return to cycling wasn't just about achieving records; rediscovering joy and love for the sport became his primary driving force.
14:31 💡 His perspective on winning shifted; it's now a bonus rather than an identity, emphasizing that a career shouldn't hinge on victories to define success.
18:19 ⚖ Cavendish believes handling pressure distinguishes good from great athletes, noting his change from dwelling on pressure to moving on swiftly from outcomes.
19:37 🤝 Cavendish's mental health journey, aided by David Spindler, helped him rediscover the joy in cycling, emphasizing the importance of addressing mental health challenges.
20:48 🚴‍♂ Rediscovering the essence of why he rides a bike became crucial in Cavendish's journey of rebuilding and finding purpose beyond simply winning races.
22:56 🚴 Identity and struggle: Mark Cavendish felt a lack of identity due to constant cycling, yet supportive people helped him through it.
23:59 🗣 Straight communication: Appreciating honesty without unnecessary negativity, focusing on solutions rather than just criticism.
24:54 🏋‍♂ Training structure: Cavendish adapted to structured training despite preferring a less regimented approach.
26:01 📊 Cycling evolution: The sport's shift towards data-driven training and the rise of strong, technology-savvy cyclists.
27:38 🚴‍♂ Experience over data: Instinct and experience play pivotal roles, complementing data-driven training in cycling.
28:37 🎉 Emotional victory: Winning a crucial race allowed Cavendish to release pressure, boosting confidence for the rest of the tour.
30:11 🚴 Team commitment: The significance of committed teammates over individual strength in cycling performances.
32:26 💼 Loneliness in cycling: Despite camaraderie, the sport involves a considerable amount of solitary, mental endurance.
37:37 🏋‍♂ Minimalistic approach: Elite athletes often focus on essentials like training, family, and rest rather than gadgets or supplements.
38:58 🚵 Career uncertainty: Cavendish remains unsure about retirement, contemplating staying in the sport post-racing.
41:56 🏡 Traumatic experience: Cavendish recounts a harrowing home invasion, impacting his perspective on trust and vulnerability.
45:42 🎥 Vulnerability on film: Despite discomfort, Cavendish appreciates the documentary's honesty in portraying his flaws and struggles.
46:34 🚴‍♂ Overcoming mental health struggles in elite athletics is often misunderstood; speaking out helps other athletes cope.
47:30 🛡 Athletes often fear being vulnerable; admitting struggles can be seen as career-damaging or weak.
48:51 🤔 Misunderstandings about mental health create unnecessary obstacles; understanding doesn't mean pity, just removing barriers.
50:52 🚵‍♂ Athletes facing retirement can find it challenging to redefine their identity and purpose post-career.
53:41 🚴‍♂ Cycling offers a sense of freedom and diversity, adaptable to various levels and social aspects.
59:49 📰 Public perception can misconstrue personalities; being a public figure requires managing this responsibly.
01:05:22 🌟 Turning negatives into positives by seeking solutions can uplift mental well-being and outlook on life.

I am sorry, but a sprinter can never be the best cyclist in the world. The best one was probably Eddy Merckx. The best one at this moment is probably Tadej Pogacar or Wout van Aert. Don't get me wrong Mark was one of the biggest stars in pro cycling! Big respect for what he achieved.

Most elite athletes nowadays are so simple minded. To be on top you have to work 247. Dont get me wrong they're are very high achievers... just saying many of them lack personality depth.
