  • During their walk down memory lane, the group touches on the back story behind the famous ‘The Look’ on Alpe d’Huez at the 2001 Tour de France, the 2003 Tour de France when Jan put 1’36 into Lance in the first individual time trial, and Lance cracked on the Tourmalet, before coming back with an amazing ride on Luz Ardiden after his crash, where Jan made the decision to wait for Lance and allowed him to catch up, the different media pressure each superstar received in their respective home countries and how the intense glare in Germany has affected Jan. Before they go, they revisit Jan’s appearance, and speech at the Discovery Team’s 2005 Tour de France Celebration Dinner.

Met Jan in 2022 on my way back home from the final stage of the Tour de France in Paris. When I first passed and recognised him, I was so shocked, I couldn't believe my childhood hero was just sitting there. I was unsure whether or not I should bother him, or rather let him live his life in peace. When I got off the train, I decided to at least ask him for a picture and we had a short conversation. He is such a modest, down to earth guy, he remains a hero for me.

God, as a teen, watching these Tours each holiday after school in Germany, i HATED Lance so much, cheering each and every year for Jan sitting in front of the TV. Now i absolutely LOVE to see this friendship. Truly inspiring. Willkommen zurück im Leben, Jan - you're a true fighter and a legend. Thanks a lot to Lance, George, Johan, JB and the whole WEDU Team

Back in those years, I had the idea of turning the TdF into a scripted reality show, "Big Time Cycling" 😂 They would produce a European version of the TdF in which Jan would best the then much reviled Lance in much of Europe. And, concurrently air a North American version in which Jan was cast as the "evil German" and Lance would heroically prevail 🇺🇸💪🏻

I was also a teen but watching from US. I never even rode bikes but was absolutely gripped by the drama this rivalry generated. I’m German and my first Tour was 1997 and have been hooked on Jan ever since. The rivalry was quite a bitter one from our perspective but it was still captivating. And 2003 felt like the culmination of all cycling gods coming together for Jan, and then that tragic rainy day.
Then we had the tough times of cycling and all the revelations. But Lance always had that aura around him. I’d rather not be his enemy but you have to respect his belief and passion for the sport. And the friendship between him and Jan is just amazing. I think thanks to Lance, Jan Ullrich has an image in the US that we Germans could not possibly imagine. Here, the people love him, but the press does not. I am glad he found this connection. And let’s not forget the passion from Johan and George either.
    Thanks guys!!!

As a huge cycling fan who has suffered tremendously myself with mental health and addiction problems, I can say that more sports heroes need to have the courage to let their fans know what s going on. You were an inspiration to me more than you could ever know. The rivalry between you and Lance piqued my fascination with the idea of pushing my body to the extreme limit that has culminated in a very beautiful and rewarding life hiking and climbing in the mountains. You may have saved my life by being so awesome. You're a great man and you taught me how to suffer like a man through my TV set. Keep riding and keep yourself in this happy state, man. The fish always starts stinking from the head and people like you, lifting theses cheaters on a throne today, are still a problem. They were simply cheaters and cheated over the riders how did not do any kind of doping and played fair. I was one of them riding in continental teams for more then 6 years, also competed against Jan and many other in german championship races and never ever had a chance to step up into low/mid pro level. And the reason is simply cause the majority was using drugs, as it is evident, that EPO gives you at minimum a 10 to 15% boost in performance, which would have brought me from an average german semi pro, to a mid level pro rider. You are simply a shame for our sport, preferring the spectacal over fair sport. It's like celebrating Trump for being a criminal or Bush or Putin for starting an unnecessary war. Shame!

Lance's lack of fear of anything has always amazed me. He fears nothing but maybe himself. He seemingly has no fear of any man or woman, disease, God, obstacle or situation. He's always been the center of his universe and little else matters. EPO or not, his rides in TDF were, by far, the most entertaining of any tours.

Wow, this episode brought back so many childhood memories. As a young boy, I saw Jan the Kaiser for the first time, in 1998.. I really thought or believed he was not human but a German robot. Got my first bike and started riding back in a small Caribbean island when nobody was even riding. I use to ride by myself all the time as a young kid. But the rivalry was real to me. When Jan fell off the bike in the last stage time trial I started crying, a grown ass man .. LOL that’s how good cycling was back in the day. People can say all they want about Lance but his present actions speak louder than anything else. Good to see everyone together enjoying life and healthy. I know everyone probably remembers classic Jan Telekom colors T-mobile pink. But he looked better than ever ..fit as FK in the bianchi celeste suit. Fantastico el episode!

As a french, I'm so ashamed that our sport "authorities" did smear such champions. I am instead so proud, that those guys, who won EVERYTHING, who know better than anybody what pain, effort, perseverance, rivalry, and so much more, means, are so moved by the Tour. Thank you gentlemen for sharing these incomparable moments with us ❤

2001 and 2003 Tours were two of the best that I remember. Lance dropped Jan multiple times in 2001, Jan went off the side of the mountain of the downhill and Lance waited, only to drop him later. Then 2003, Jan almost had him but crashed on the slick roads in the final ITT, sliding into the protective bails. Some epic battles those years.

That Podcast bought back wonderful memories of those tours. I was a triathlete learning how to ride and here were my heroes racing at their absolute best. i love that George can give other insights that just expand the story. I'd love to ride the Georges event just to be on the road with the 3 of you. Time to get fit and work out how to get there from Australia.
