I have the DDJ-1000. If you are considering buying the 800, I'd strongly recommend saving up the difference and buying the 1000. Quality is worthwhile investment. 1000 is SOLID

Unless you want to hookup two turntables to a DDJ-1000 and play analog vinyl. You are then really in for a bad time experience, because the DDJ-1000 has ultra low quality preamps built-in.

I got my 1000 with a hard flight case and 3 year accidental protection warranty for 1300 total on black friday. May be worth waiting if you don't need it asap. The only issue i had with Rekordbox was the music analysis for hip-hop/pop/r&b. I almost thought about taking it back the difference was so frustrating. But I've tweaked some settings and got rekord buddy (just so that I can analyze in serato). I don't really need to analyze on serato now and starting to like rekordbox. I got the 1000 so I could get familiar with club settings so it's worth it for me, but the serato switchover is not for the faint of heart. Love the jog wheels, the mixer sounds GREAT. I'm still getting used to rekordbox but the jog wheels, effects, mixer are a good enough value for 1200 there's nothing else even comparable.

Are the phono preamps same as in the DDJ-1000?
Those in DDJ-1000 are REALLY bad for playing analog vinyl.
Official statement from the official Pioneer mod in the pioneer forum about the issue:
"To be perfectly honest, they [the phone preamps] are not intended for vinyl playback. The phono inputs are primarily for DVS timecode input. I know you're thinking "but what's the difference?" and the answer to that is the quality doesn't need to be as high if it's just for DVS input. ... It's not a DJM-quality mixer -- a single 4-channel DJM is more than the cost of the entire DDJ-1000, so obviously there will be places that don't shine as brightly, and in this case, it's the phono inputs.
My recommendation would be to source an external RIAA phono pre-amp and place that between your turntable and the line input."
    Pioneer are you kidding us?
This is a controller for 1000 Euro. How are even cheap Xone:23 or Nuo 2.0 for around 250 € absolutely fine with playing analog vinyl?
    This is ridicuolious.
P.S. You are suggesting buying two external RIAA preamps for the turntables..yeah..right..
How is a controller like NI Z2 able to have decent phono preamps for analog vinyl? It costs about 450-500 €.

@@jayritter604 it's been admitted by pioneer that the DDJ-1000 isn't meant to be used for vinyl, only DVS. Yes, audio comes through with vinyl, but that's not the issue. The issue is the quality. Have you compared vs mixers with proper preamps? It's obvious that it sounds bad.

Great review. It seems like for bigger clubs/events you might want to stick to the DDJ 1000, because of the jog wheels, 4 channels instead of 2, can be played without the laptop and you can use the effects with a mic unlike the DDJ 800.
Well honestly for me I wanted to upgrade from 400 to 1000 anyways so I was looking out for this review.
And if the pricing differences is not that much between the two I would differently go for DDJ 1000.
But is the DDJ 800 better than the DDJ 400? Now that's a different story.
800 has more advantage over the 400 that's for sure but the point of using the effects without a mic kinda ruins the experience so that's a disadvantage for me.

Worth noting that the phono preamps on the DDJ1000 and presumably the 800 are not actually fit for analogue turntables and only suitable for DVS. They sound terrible and that’s been confirmed by Pioneer but not mentioned in ANY official documentation. It’s fine as you can use an external preamp but it’s a bit cheeky to claim it can be used as a standalone mixer when it’s not really fit for purpose as a standalone.

When he got to the points of the crossfader being different, the jog wheels being smaller and capacitive, that was it. Wouldn't get the 800 based on those two things alone. I've been using the Traktor Kontrol S4 for the last 8 or so years and have loved it but think its time for a change. As I play a lot of house and techno, I often use the Delay T3 effect, you could say made famous by Richie Hawtin. Does anyone know if something is similar on DDJ800 or 1000 and in Rekordbox? On the effects channels on the Kontrol S4, you have 3 seperate knobs which can manipulate one effect. So you can increase the delay, then increase the rate also. is this possible on these controllers? Thanks

My take away, even though it's early days: Good move by PioneerDJ, like the more compact 2-Channel option (I'm not a big fan of 4-Channel Mixers), disappointed on the size and tech of the Jog wheels, would have hoped they would carry on the tech going forward, but it's not a deal breaker. So far so good, will wait for a more in-depth review but so far I like it! On a side note though, I think if Pioneer want more people to switch to Rekordbox (Which they are inadvertently doing by releasing Rekordbox-only hardware), they should really consider making the transition a bit easier for guys moving over from Serato. Forcing guys to either buy additional software or manually reorganize their libraries is a fail in my opinion.
Otherwise good review, and good all around device from Pioneer

Seeing Pioneer decided to produce a DDJ-1000SRT for Serato why do they not produce a DDJ-800 for Serato, I have nothing against the Rekordbox software but having used Serato for some time and being comfortable with it, a Serato DDJ-800 would be a sharp move for Pioneer as it would increase the sales of the 800 dramatically for those Serato users that, like me do not need the 4 channels on the 1000SRT, I would by a DDJ-800SRT tomorrow.
